RAID config in W530

Q1: Can I put two SATAIII(6Gbps) SSDs in internal and Optical Bays and Configure them with RAID 0 or 1.
Q2: Is the mSATA moudle compatible with availabe standard SATA3 SSDs in the market?
Thanks

I'm also wondering if you can set up a raid after the fact and not choose "raid configured" from ordering through lenovo.

  • P965 Platinum and Vista x64 RAID config?

Ok, I have looked all over this forum for Vista x64 issues. Nothing even comes close to my problem. When I load Windows Vista Ultimate x64 Edition onto a clean SATAII drive (single non-RAID drive) I have no problems what-so-ever.
Now here is when it really gets weird. When I run install on a RAID array (2 SATAII Seagate 160GB drives) I see issues in the install. First thing I see is it corrupts the data on the first drive. This causes a blue screen at restart. When I go into the RAID config (ctrl+I) I see the first drive has errors. The only thing I can do is delete the RAID and start over.
When I reinstall Win XP Pro X64 I have no problems at all. I have downloaded the latest drivers from the downloads section and I have tried the newer Intel drivers. Non work!
    Computer info:
    CPU: Intel 3.4GHz Pentium D x64
    MB: MSI P965 Platinum
    Storage: 2x Seagate 160GB SATAII
RAID: Intel ICH7R/ICH8R SATA RAID driver 2006-08-29 (and have tried the newer driver from Intel)
If you need more just ask!
Oh yeah, I looked at the specs sheet for the P965. They need to remove the NEC 3550 from the "OK" list since it does not Wright period or READ at install. I went through a big deal with MSI about this and they still have not removed it.

Well sh**! I borrowed a friends Vista x86 and found it to also have the same issue. Would not even load the "Choose Drive" screen or allow me to even install the RAID drivers.
Man when a board gets Vista approved is must not take much. I have had compatibility issues with this board since day one. I think maybe it is time to through it away. What a shame since it is only a few months old.

  • Removing RAID config

I purchased a used external LaCie drive that had RAID configured. when I connect I see two drives of equal size in disk utility. I would like to remove the RAID config and have it be one disk. Can someone tell me how? sorry if this is a redundant question (pardon the pun) but I searched thru help and this forum and cant find anything.
    thanks in advance, Mike
    Dual 1.8GHz or PBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Open Disk Utility, select the RAID set from the left side list (the one with the RAID size) then click on the RAID tab in the DU main window. Select the main entry in the list view with the RAID Set label (it will also have the word "Online" in green), then click on the Delete button.
All data will likely be lost so if you have anything on the drive you want saved be sure to backup first.

  • P7N Diamond, unable to access RAID Config during Boot

I've got a P7N Diamond motherboard, with 6 disks attached, one SSD (boot) and I recently installed 5 1.5TB disks as well. These I would like to run in RAID 5 mode.  I've enabled RAID for those channels in the BIOS, but I am unable to access the RAID config that's supposed to be available during bootup.  The system also has an ADAPTEC RAID 1430SA ROHS SINGLE PCI-E LP 4-PORT controller with two disks attached, could this be messing things up?  (I DO get an option to access this RAID config, but it fails claiming too little free memory (!) (It's a system with 4GB installed))   In Windows 7, the 5 disks shows up in the NV Raid as "Free disks", but I'm not able to do anything with them except setting SMART info.  In the Windows Disk management they don't show up at all.
So, anyone got any ideas on how to access the raid config (F10) during boot?
    All suggestions appreciated
    Thanks,
      Zem

The error regarding "too little free memory" isn't related to system RAM but to bios ROM address space.  As already stated, the Adaptec card is causing the conflict with the NV RAID controller bios.  This is actually a very common issue when trying to run multiple disk controllers in a single system and isn't any fault of the mobo.  There's only so much addressable space for BIOS to reside in.
You may be able to free up some address space by disabling the LAN Option (boot) ROM in CMOS and setting the JMicron controller to IDE instead of RAID.  Even better would be to disable the JMicron controller entirely.
If, after doing so, the Adaptec controller is still not able to work with the NV controller in RAID mode, then I'm afraid you're out of luck.

  • Help please - failed RAID config

    Hi,
I have a large problem with my external drives.
I had 2 existing Lacie firewire drives mirrored with all photos and music on it and just added two new drives (which I was going to setup as a backup pair).
Unfortunately one of the drives on the existing RAID config had a logical fail (I have a screen print). However the logical drive was still mounted and data was accessible. Before I issued a rebuild I was investigating a possible naming issue and now both disks are showing a failed status. This may have been caused by powering off drives before an unmount.
Anyway, I am sure the data is still on both drives. How can I recover the data from either disk.

    OUCH!
First try Disk Utility to just Check the RAID Volume... see what it says.
If it looks like a no-go, then perhaps...

  • How to back up raid drv that's in non-raid config?

I had planned to use one sata drive as my main drive, the second sata drive for video streaming, and my pata drive on IDE3 to store backup images  of my main sata drv as well as bkup images of other computers on my network. But after reading some of the posts here it looks like none of the imaging programs will work even if I'm not using a stripe or a mirror config. (I have drive Image 2002, DI 7, and ghost 2003)
I'm not crazy about mirroring the 2 sata drvs because a mirror will duplicate a messed up hd (due to a misbehaving installed game, spyware, etc.) just as quickly as a perfectly fuctioning drv. I would like to be able to create a reliable restorable image of my main drv when it is the way I want it.  Then when my main drv does get messed up (which has happened to me before) I can restore my good bkup and go from there.
I also like the performance advantage of a striped array, but once again how do I make a resorable backup?
Does anyone have any ideas or at least a comprise that will let me use my 3 raid connections and be able to back up. I only have one IDE connection left (besides the IDE3 that I'd like to use).

  • K9A2 Platinum Memory/RAID config Prob.

I have an MSI K9A2 Plat mobo and a phenom 9500 processor. I bought Mushkin 8500 DDR2 memory. In Bios it sets it at 800 mhz. What do I need to do to get it to run at the advertised speed? This is my first MSI mobo. What are the optimal settings for this set up in bios? HT speed? its at auto but im sure its not at the clocking it should be. Also the memory has a timing of 5-5-4-12 at 2.2-2.35v. When i go into the bios and try to select timing it has about 15 different fields to input. Thats the first problem....
The second issue is that I have 2 raptor HDD's. I initially set them up in a RAID 0 configuration. when the computer restarted after the config it gets to the screen where it detects the two hard drives in raid 0 and says FUNCTIONAL... Thats were it freezes..... I have to do ctrl+alt+del to restart and go back in the BIOS and select IDE under the sata menu. I can format both hard drives and both are working correctly. I was going to try and set up the raid again by hitting ctrl+f but I cannot access the SB600 RAID bios on the board anymore, It just sticks at FUNCTIONAL. Any Ideas? BTW i have bios vers 1.1 850w coolermaster ps and 2 radeon 3870s.

I connected both raptors to the PROMISE controller and I get the same thing FUNCTIONAL, then it stops!
Also whats the best HT speed and how can I get my memory to run dual channel?
everytime I boot up it says single channel.

"and how can I get my memory to run dual channel?
everytime I boot up it says single channel."
Its already in dual CH(since you have placed memory sticks in correct slots DIMM1 & DIMM2):
AMD's OverDrive Utility, note that it reads the memory controller as single channel because Phenom actually has two independent 64-bit memory controllers instead of a single 128-bit one. Current BIOSes and the AMD utility incorrectly report this as being single-channel.
        * A single-channel mode, when only one of the 64-bit controllers is active (occupied with memory modules)
        * Dual-channel ganged mode, the integrated memory controller is detected by a processor as a single 128-bit controller
        * Dual-channel unganged mode, the integrated memory controller is detected by a processor as two independent 64-bit controllers.
    Read this one as well:

Regarding the dual channel thing, I found the following on the OCZ memory forums:
Just some info for you guys.
ganged mode is 1x128bit dual channel
unganged is 2x64 bit dual channel
Some motherboards are reporting unganged as single channel at boot, this is not true, if you see anyone saying they have defective memory please point them to this post.
Ganged will give higher sandra bandwidth at this time than unganged, this is because sandra does not fully support phenom and is working in 1 thread mode. Once sandra supports Phenom unganged 2x64bit will take the lead
If you are running multi threaded benchmarks you need to be in unganged mode, this is the fastest way of running the system.
CPUID also reports my 9500 as single channel.
You can change it from "advanced dram configuration" locate "Unganged Mode".
Do a memcheck with Memtest86 as well.
Another note about RAID problems, according to promise SS above, you have running BIOS 1.1 or 113, in 1.0,112,P0C Promise version is different(2.8.10.30.0012) you may try to flash back to one of those.
But since problem persist when you connect them to SB600 RAID, probably problem is not there...
Can you retry with different brand HDD's(not Raptors, but with hitachi or seagate for example)?

  • Raid config g-speed

    Hi
Earlier this year I bought a G-Speed Q Raid that causes me some problems know.  The disk itselves have in somewhay been corrupted and need to be formattet to work 100%.  When I checked the support pages at Q-Technology web site I became aware that the Raid Controller for this external disk cabinet only support OS X.6 or EARLIER versions. In other words neither LION or MOUNTAIN LION is supported for this disk set??????
Does anyone have any idea on how to solve this issue?  I really need to reconfigure the disk with a RAID 5 setup.

You can use the G-Speed Q configurator that is listed on the G-Tech support page. It works fine with 10.7 and 10.8. (website description is dated) Remember that you must use USB 2.0 connection to config.

  • 845PE max2 fisr( Raid config)

Hi there, i'm new to this forum and have a few Q's
Just bought 845PE Max2 mobo so far no prob's.
Pc is to replace the ageing PIII 866 i815EP in my studio.
    Spec of new machine is:
    845PE max 2 fisr
    PIV 2.4/533
    1024  PC2700 ddr
    nVidia geForce Ti 4200
    Creamware PulsarII DSP sound.
    2 x Seagate Barracuda ATA 100/7200 h/d
Here is the question, How do I set up the hard disks to work in  RAID 0 config?
Both disks are parallel ATA 100, and mobo only has one parallel RAID socket. can I use the second drive on the IDE bus alongside the one on the RAID bus and configure them to stripe data when writing multi-track audio files, or do I have to get a serial ATA drive?
And why are there only three RAID connectors when raid works in multiples of 2 disks?
The throughput of striped data transfers will increase my studios output but I have a limited knowledge of RAID.
Would I be better getting a seperate boot disk for O/S and programs and using the said H/D's for audio data?
I would appreciate any help with this. Am I just stupid or is the mobo manual a little vague on the subject
    Cheers ! L8ers.

You need either 1xS.ATA+1xP.ATA or 2xS.ATA.
It is possible to find S.ATA converters for the drives, but they aren't very cheap.
Since you intend to use the RAID for more than just braging about your PC Mark scors I think you might want to consider a real PCI RAID controller with 128/256MB PC133 SDRAM onboard cache.
They cost around 100-150$ and give a much higher real life throughput.

  • S20 *new* RAID config for retail Windows 7 install...questions

I’ve recently ordered a S20 and I have a few questions about my situation/configuration, if anyone has the knowledge and time, I'd really appreciate it.
I’ve configured the workstation to be shipped without an installed OS, a single SATA hard drive, and no optical drive.  I have a new retail copy of Windows 7 Professional that I will install, two Seagate 1TB SATA hard drives that I will install in RAID1 configuration, and a new DVD multi-recorder ready to install.  The drive that comes with the workstation will be used as well, but not as the boot drive.  I wish to boot off of a partition on the RAID1 set.
I’ve looked into the hardware/user guides for as much information as I could find, but I’m not clear, and thus concerned, as to what I will need to do to get RAID setup with a boot partition and install Windows.
I see that there are three SATA ports for hard drives on the main board.
    1)  Can RAID be configured using ANY combination of these ports, and is the unused port still available for normal SATA drive hosting?
For instance, can I configure two 1TB hard drives on the first two ports and configure a third non-RAID drive on the third port?
I am now familiar with the BIOS RAID configuration utility from reading the guides.
    2)  How do I install an OS (Windows 7 32 or 64) on a new RAID partition, once it is configured, if my retail version of Windows doesn't have the driver?
For instance, can I provide the driver during installation via the Windows 7 setup?
I understand that there are also two SATA ports for optical drives on a separate controller (for five SATA ports total).
    3)  If I attach my DVD drive to one of the SATA ports intended for optical devices, will the system see it as a bootable device?
I need to make my DVD drive a boot device in order to install windows, so I'm hoping that the system will see it that way.  I also hope that the SATA ports are labeled on the main board!  (Optical 0, 1 / Disk 0, 1, 2)  ???
If anyone has the time to help me with these three questions I think I will be more at ease.  I worry about going off the path and ordering a blank machine, but I am adamant about a non-OEM OS.
BTW, I am moving to the S20 from a five year old IntelliStation M Pro which is the best machine I've owned so far.  I also keep a ThinkPad X61 at my side.  Really looking forward to the new workstation!
    Cheers!

    erik, thank you so much.
I was thrown off by the Marvell driver in the S20 download page, I think.  Now I'm ready to go.

  • Two proposed RAID configs on P965 - Which is better and why?

    Hello again,
I've upgraded my signature to indicate my current status - case and power supply due in today.
I'm considering getting a 3ware, Promise or Adaptec, dedicated RAID controller card and have a few questions.
         1. Am I correct in assuming that I will not have problems installing Mobo RAID after installing the system(WinXP Pro), as long as the system is on another non-RAID drive? (Raptor on SATA #1 - see signature)
         2. How much of a performance hit will I take by using the Mobo RAID instead of a dedicated controller card?
         3. SATA2 dedicated controller cards come in either a PCI or PCIe. The theoretical total transfer rate of the PCIe would be much higher than the older PCI: 133 vs 66 (I think). Am I correct about this and what is the real world experience on the subject?
Thanks to everyone for their knowledge - you've really helped out.
    Bruce McFarland

    1) That would be a correct assumption. However, you will have to follow a certain procedure to switch to AHCI or RAID mode and to install the Intel Matrix Storage driver. Find the procedure here, worked for me on multiple occasions.
    2) Difficult to say, what type of RAID are we talking about? The ICH8R is pretty decent for an onboard solution, but a dedicated controller card will always be faster as it has it's own processor. Depending on the type of RAID, there can be a performance difference (for example RAID 3 or 5).
    3) Bandwidth is probably not your biggest concern. Main difference between PCI and PCI-E is that multiple components share a PCI bus, a PCI-E connection is point-to-point (a dedicated PCI-E lane). PCI-E should be faster than PCI, but again the difference depends on the type of RAID and your drive usage.

  • HW RAID Config for Oracle DB on Windows

We are currently running Oracle 8.0.5 on Windows 2000 Advanced Server. This is a DELL PowerEdge 6600 server with 8 73GB Ultra SCSI Hard Drives. We will be upgrading to Oracle 9i in the future. Question: What would be the recommended Hardware RAID Configuration? We've heard that RAID 10 would be a good configuration to implement. What would be the best way for us to configure our server? We would like a high fault tolerance, good performance system. Our database isn't very large in size (10GB). By the way, switching to a different operating system is not an option for us.

    Hi
In we use 9i on Win 2k3 with RAID5, it is fault tolerance and i think RAID5 is the best configuration for performance and security and fault tolerance. but keep in mind that RAID has the small write penalty.
And it is suggested by many consultants that if you're using RAID you should put the control files and the redo logs on disks outside the RAID array, but this configuration is for very large DBs.
RAID5 is working perfect with me, i have dual XEON 2.4 4 x 15000 x 34 GB SCSI HDD and 4 GB Ram ofcourse our DB is almost 30 GB.

  • Making RAID config of existing installed OSX server

    Hi,
the situation for the moment is:
XServe with 1x60Gb disk and OSX Server with communigate, and a data disk 1x120Gb as backup drive.
Can I make a mirror of 2x 120Gb without reinstallation of the server?
    eg:
    - Make an image of the 60Gb harddisk
    - Remove 60Gb disk and insert 2 x 120Gb disks
    - make a RAID volume
    - XServe in FW mode and put the image back on a 120Gb disk.
    Will this work?
    Thanks,
    Bart

For a start, which version of Mac OS X Server.
If you have two 120GB disks my recommendation would be to set them up as a mirror, then use asr to replicate the OS partition onto the mirror. Then you can simply reboot off the mirror and you're done.

  • K8TNeo Raid config - where is it stored, MB or Hard drive?

I have a MSI K8T Neo with the VT8377 SATA Controlller set up for Raid 1 (Mirror) using the VIA Raid tool, on which are two identical disks partioned into C and D; the C drive being the XP system disk. I am using (the excellent) Drive Snapshot tool to take a disk image of C drive as backup onto a external USB drive. To restore I boot from ftoppy or BartPE XP CDRom boot (f6 during this latter will allow me to load external disk driver in nomrla way for XP dyring setup) and then do a restore wiht Snapshot of C image to C. I have not tried this yet
My question is the two discs are configured as Raid 1 mirror via the VIA VT8377 controller and only appear as one drive (with 2 partitions C and D) ; is this configuration held on the motherboard, if so when I do a restore it will effectively mirror the restore or is it on the C Drive in which case I have a problem?
    many thanks

  • NTFS/RAID Config Dilemma

    Background:
I have an Xserve Raid (contaning all 500GB drive modules) connected to a Windows 2003 Server via FC HBA. I've configured drive modules 1-6 at RAID 5 with a total capacity of 2.27TB, setting my 7th drive module as a hotswap. -Same goes for drive modules 8-14. Then come to find out that NTFS does not support over 2TB. In Windows 2003 Server Disk Management it's only viewing ~2048GB of manageable partition and the rest of ~280MB unmanageable.
    Questions:
    1. How can I have maximize my RAID array capacity without loosing space?
    2. I thought about splitting the fist RAID array in half (1-3 & 4-6 drive running RAID5), but what about the 7th drive? Other than the 7th drive, I'd still loose running RAID 5 with those sets.
    3. Is this just an NTFS issue? Does HFS or HFS+ support over 2TB? -If so, can clients running Windows file share, using HFS or HFS+? (Oh... And of course maintaining Windows sharing file permissions?)
Can anyone relate and offer any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    Hey Homie,
If you haven't already formatted the drives and put data on them in NTFS, you can use the slicing functionality of the Xserve RAID to cause the 6-disk RAID 5 to appear as a pair of 1.13 TB volumes. Then you can upgrade them to dynamic disks and stripe them in a RAID 0... I actually think it will then support a volume of 2.27 TB (I think it's an issue with the LUN size and not the volume size).
I bet 64-bit Windows would have no problems with the LUN size over 2 TB.
And yes, HFS+ does support volumes over 2 TB. I forget the limit, but it's "very, very large." So you could share the volume via SMB from an Xserve and have clients use it... and HFS+ does support ACLs for file permissions as of 10.4. I'm not going to say it's as easy for a Windows admin to manage permissions, however -- if they're used to using MMC and AD tools to manage their share permissions (or logging in as a client workstation and trying to set permissions via Windows Explorer)... they'll have to become familiar with the OS X Admin tools... and they have to be willing to learn them.
