Raid Drives: Hitachi 7k3000 Deskstar vs Seagate Barracuda XT

Hi Guys
Thought I'd start a new post for this. Have got all my components sorted for my new pc and that is being built, but I needed to source my raid controller and drives from a different source. So here's the dilema.
Im going to be using an ARC-1880i SAS/SATA 6gbit 8-Port Card and was going to get 3 x Hitachi 7k3000, but they're not in stock and the guy had recommended the Seagate Barracuda XT  SATA 300
Just before I take the plunge are there any advantages to using the Hitachis that I'm unaware of , or is the Seagate OK.
On the Raid side of things, still a bit unsure as to whether to use Raid 3 or Raid 5 . Am I right in thinking most people use raid 5? Just wondering.
Thanks
Nick
P.S Just found out that the Hitachi are very hard to find because of  manufacturing after the Eartquake in Japan.

Unless I'm missing something, current Barracuda XTs are SATA600, not 300. Or did you mean the non-XT Barracudas?
http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/products/internal-storage/
Price wise, the smallest XT is 2TB, and prices at $140
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148506
Same sized Hitachi's are $120
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145473
But if you are going for speed more the capacity, I'd go with the Hitachi's 1.5TG at $65 each
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145520
You'll get a much less expensive solution, especially in the long run when you'll add more drives to your RAID. At $65, you'll be able to have more disks, and be a lot faster.
If total capacity is not as critical as speed, ask them if they can get the 1.5TB Hitachi model instead of the 2TB.
PS: The Hitachi's have been tested on the Areca.
Most people use RAID5 because most RAID controlers out there are RAID5s. Only Areca makes RAID3 cards. Loosely explained, the advantage of RAID3 over RAID5 is the efficiency at reading and writing large files (video files) in a single user environment. Perfect for video editors. Also, if a drive fails, the RAID3 performance is not deteriorated. RAID 3 sucks in a multi user file server environment. Multiple access from different tasks bogs down the troughput drasitically. RAID5 on the other hand is way more efficient at reading multiple small files at the "same" time (documents, database access, etc). There is a good performance drop iwhen a drive fails, but it's still able to respond adequatly in a file server environment.
Many say RAID3 is an old inneficient technology and that it's dead. And RAID5 has evolved and is better at everything.  Truth is, there is no one solution that does everything well.  In reality, each has their place, and it depends largely on your workflow. So I suggest that, when your system is ready, if you have the time, try testing your RAID in both levels, and benchmark it yourself.

  • Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 or ES.2 for RAID 5

    Hello all.
I've searched through past topics to avoid repetition, and my knowledge of RAID is somewhat limited. Nonetheless.....
I've purchased a Mac Pro 2x Quad Core for the audio company that I work for, and plan to fill up the hard drives with an extensive audio library which will be accessed via Logic Studio.
We are planning on purchasing a RAID card, using RAID 5 in order to stripe and mirror the drives.
The hard drives we are looking at are Seagate Barracuda 1TB drives, and I am struggling to determine which will be most appropriate.
Having researched around, it was suggested to me that the Seagate Barracuda ES.2 drives are more appropriate for using with a RAID card, although considering the increased cost compared to the 7200.11 drives [an extra £180), I'd like to find out is this is really necessary.
If any of you have any advice, suggestions, etc., I would be most grateful.
    Louise.

If you are in an enterprise in which these drives will be in relatively continuous use, then it would be wise to purchase the ES enterprise models because they are intended for heavy enterprise usage. If all you do is an occasional backup to the RAID and the usage is light and the drives are not running 24/7, then you may do fine with the less expensive versions.

    Hardware or Software RAID?
RAID Hardware Vs RAID Software - What is your best option?
RAID is a method of combining multiple disk drives into a single entity in order to improve the overall performance and reliability of your system. The different options for combining the disks are referred to as RAID levels. There are several different levels of RAID available depending on the needs of your system. One of the options available to you is whether you should use a Hardware RAID solution or a Software RAID solution.
RAID Hardware is always a disk controller to which you can cable up the disk drives. RAID Software is a set of kernel modules coupled together with management utilities that implement RAID in Software and require no additional hardware.
    Pros and cons
Software RAID is more flexible than Hardware RAID. Software RAID is also considerably less expensive. On the other hand, a Software RAID system requires more CPU cycles and power to run well than a comparable Hardware RAID System. Also, because Software RAID operates on a partition by partition basis where a number of individual disk partitions are grouped together as opposed to Hardware RAID systems which generally group together entire disk drives, Software RAID tends be slightly more complicated to run. This is because it has more available configurations and options. An added benefit to the slightly more expensive Hardware RAID solution is that many Hardware RAID systems incorporate features that are specialized for optimizing the performance of your system.

  • How to Install Hitachi SATA Deskstar Internal Hard Drive?

I just purchased HITACHI SATA Deskstar 3/5" 500GB/16MB Cache/72RPM Internal Hard Drive, which said it was compatible with my Mac. I have a iMac mid 2007 2.4 GHz Intel Core Duo2 running OSx10.6.4. Is this a simple install or do you recommend I take it into repair? Any suggestions would be welcome, I am a bit of a novice.

Thanks for the feedback. BTW, you might want to roll your own ext HD. I did this one in April when I got the 27":

Search around Amazon and you'll probably come up with larger HDs to put into it.

  • Raid drive (seagates) ejects on macbook retina sleep, Raid drive ejects on macbook retina sleep

Whoever can help me with this you would be my hero.  This problem plagues me.
So I have four hard drives hooked up to my macbook retina all USB 3.0.  All connected through 2 USB Hubs.
All drives work fine except I have severe issue with the raid drive.  It has two new seagate baraccuda 7200 @ 3 TB, for a total of 3 TB in RAID 1 mode (data reducndancy).
The problem is no matter whether I set the energy saver setting to put the drives to sleep when possible or not and leave them always running as soon as my MAC sleeps and I wake it up it says "please unmount or eject drive before unplugging" or something to that effect and then I have to reboot to access the drive.
I have had this probelm with two different enclosures and even went so far as to use a app called "jetison" which is supposed to eject your Hard drives before letting the computer sleep.  Nothing helps.
Is it the drives themselves?  Is it RAID 1 confguration on mac?  I even tried changing enclosures and still have the same probelm.. but could it nonetheless be the enclosure???

I should point out I have tried the drive with different cords, on different hubs, and directly into the computer.  Nothing helps.

My IMac 21.5 mid 2010's HD is going bad on it, after upgrading to mavericks it slowed way down and after it shut off and now won't come back on, I call apple support and they told me to bring it in but the nearest store is about two hours away. They said I need it to erase my hard drive but I have too many family pics on it.
would Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB Serial ATA Hard Drive - 7200RPM, 64MB, SATA 6Gb/s worked on it? I could replace the internal and get an enclosure for the original until I get the pics out of it?
Please advise, it's like five years of family pics I don't wanna loose them and I am worried.
    Thanks
    Al Florez

    A Brody,
I really apprecate your very quick respond, Its too late to back up as of now, my hard drive wont load at all so I cannot follow your instruction to back it up. Learn a hard lesson but I will from now on following your link.
Also my hard drive it is not available to do the free exchange program.
I read the OWC instruction on how to replace the drive I was just wondering if the 2TB would work on it instead of the 1 TB they offer, I specifically asked for the Seage Barracuda because I had great experiences with it on PCs.
    Again, Thank you

  • Adding seagate barracuda drive confused about cables

I have a seagate barracuda 7200.10 Ultra ata 160GB HD
    I'm installing it on a G5 tower.
I'm following the apple guide for this: http://www.info.apple.com/usen/cip/pdf/g5/073-0806.pdf
The black cables on the G5 are smaller and much different looking than the back of the Seagate. The picture of the replacement/second drive in the apple pdf has the same HD pins as mine (a long data cable pins and a four prong power pins)
How do I mount this drive?

Hi Joseph, ATA/IDE/PATA drives won't work in a G5, you need a SATA drive, though there are ATA to SATA adapters, they may not fit in the regulsr installation place.

  • READ THIS | If your model 7200.11 Seagate Barracuda drive ST3500620AS has stopped working.

HP has finally released a firmware update for the 7200.11 Seagate Barracuda drive (affected model ST3500620AS).
If your computer has been freezing, or if your hard drive has all of a sudden stopped showing up in BIOS (BIOSHD-2 error), this firmware update might unbrick your drive and give you access to your data again.
    Find it here: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=US&swItem=vc-681...
I am going to try it on my bricked drive tonight and will let you know how it goes.

    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

So, after much heartache, many trials and moments of desperation I have succeeded in doing what every HP support person told me was impossible:
I have unbricked my drive AND have recovered ALL of my data!!!
How did I do it, you might ask? First let me tell you what happened before my joyous moment:
I have been researching the Seagate firmware issue since Decemeber and read a lot about the issues people were having and the causes for these problems. Seems like what this firmware bug does is cause one of two problems: either the drive shows up in BIOS but shows 0 capacity, or it doesn't show up in BIOS at all. It seems that the OEM drives we all have in our TouchSmarts were affeced by the latter issue (hard drive no longer showing up).  This is due to the drive getting stuck in a mode (google BSY error and you'll find the issue) which does not allow it to respond back; it is, in effect, eternally busy.
As a result of this BSY error, I could not run the newly posted HP firmware update for our Seagate drives. This is when the heartache began. After countless hours of research and digging, I came across the following forum which became my El Dorado.
    http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=128807
If the link above gets scrubbed, simply search for the title of the posting: "The Solution for Seagate 7200.11 HDDs"
This fine gentleman from Chile, South America worked it all out. I bought the parts he suggested, read the post to see if any modifications were made and decided to try what he suggested in a last ditch effort to save my data. The revised post is here:
Read this one for the step by step solution: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=128807&st=100
Basically, the tutorial walks you through the steps needed to "hack" into your hard drive's board and "talk to it directly" via Hyper Terminal (I ended up using a USB data cable for my old Siemens mobile phone, though). It took me two goes at it and a lot of patience and careful reading, but my drive came back to life!
So again, here are my details and issues for you in summary:
    Hardware:
    - HP TouchSmart IQ506
    - Seagate Barracuda drive: 500GB, ST3500620AS, model series 7200.11, HP firmware version HP24
    Problem Description:
    - The drive just stopped working
    - Booted my PC and the drive was no longer showing up in BIOS
    - Hard drive light was continuously lit
    - Hard drive made no funny clicking noises
    - The drive was not responsive to the new firmware fix (HP13 Rev. A from 6 Feb 2009)
I hope this helps someone out there. If you need any help, please contact me and I will try my best to help!
    Best Regards,
    Doon
EDIT: Of course, after I had access to the drive, I ran the new firmware update. You can get that here:

  • Seagate Barracuda 1.5 Gbit/s drive possible in a Mac Pro?

Hi - I have a Seagate Barracuda 1.5 Gbit/s drive model ST3250823AS in my old G5 and want to transfer it to my new Mac Pro. Firstly is this drive model compatible being 1.5 Gbit/s (I don't know whether it is SATA II or not).
And also is it possible to transfer the drive, with all its data still inside into the new Mac or do I need to initialise it in some way when in the new Mac thus wiping all the data on it?
    Thanks - Phil

Hi - That's great info regarding the drive thanks!
Hatter - the drive doesn't really have apps on it (music samples and photos) but I'm curious as to your advice - you're saying don't port any applications across using Setup Assistant? I have heard that this works, or no? I have a lot of apps to be installed on the new Mac Pro and one reason for using the Setup Assistant would be to get round the hassle of putting in all the registration codes again - which I thought would all work if using Setup Assistant?
    Thanks - Phil

  • Mac Pro (First Generation) problem with 1TB Seagate Barracuda

    Hi Macianer,
I have a first generation Mac Pro which was sold with max. 750GB Hard drives for each bay. At this time I am grabbing for straws and maybe someone has any info on this problem.
I purchased 4 x 1TB Seagate Barracuda hard drives ( Model: ST31000340AS / Firmware: SD15 ), did a regular format after I purchased them ( GUID Partition Table, Journaled HFS+ File System). I am using 2 of them internally (they get quite hot and i didn't want to put all 4 of them in there) and two of them externally (backup purposes). The other two internal bays are covered by 2x 500GB Barracuda drives.
I put all four 1 TB hard drived through a 1 week stress test to make sure I am not dealing with bad apples. So far this practice served me well.
Now 2 weeks later one completely crashed (internal boot drive). It sounded to spin up alright but was not accessible at all. I went to BestBuy and GeekSquad said this drive is crashed and I returned it.
Since I had a backup I didn't worry too much. I put the back up hard drive in as the new boot drive (since it was a SuperDuper duplicat) it worked like a charm. Now the second hard drive starts temporarily freezing the system for 2-4 minutes and seems to get stuck showing the great colored ball of doom. After the freeze it continues to operate normal again and I am able to continue my work.
I ran the Disk Utility and I got the following message:
    INVALID KEY LENGTH
    VOLUME CHECK FAILED.
ERROR: FILESYSTEM VERIFY OR REPAIR FAILED.
It just seems weird, I never had problems with hard drives and now I get these problems with 3-4 week old hard drives.
I was in a chat with seagate support. First question to trouble shoot: Do you have access to a PC. My answer was no since Microsoft Vista I donated all of them to the Salvation Army. He asked if I formatted the hard drives low level and MBR with HFS+. I said since I do not have access to PC nor do I plan on using my hard drives for PC I formatted it regular with GUID and HFS+. I asked if there is any history of these drives that would help explain my experience. I was hoping for a recall or something of that sort or something that a firmware upgrade would remedy.
I guess my question is, is the first generation Mac Pro, even though it seems to format and run them fine, not able to handle 1TB hard drives on a daily basis. Or am I dealing with hard drive problems? The Seagate guy didn't seem to be of any help.
Any help is appreciated or even pointers that would help me in finding the problem.
    Cheers,

Excellent questions, I too am looking at SSD.
Some things I know about SSD:
    1. Intel recently released new firmware for their SSD drives to improve long term performance including Trim/Garbage collection.
    2. SSD drives can be setup as SLC or MLC - SLC is faster read 2X, write 4X over MLC, however SLC is smaller capacity. SLC also has a longer life span.
    3. Intel plans to have an 320GB X25-M (MLC) and a 128GB X25-E (SLC) out soon.
OSX does not fully support Trim and I'm not aware of any 3rd party software for OSX that helps in the garbage collection area. Diskeeper 2010 for Windows 7 provides full support for all variants of SSD, but nothing on the Mac side.
I'm probably going to wait for 2010 to see what comes out, SSD appears to be good news, but it still also seems to have issues. Given the cost of these drivers and the frequent firmware updates, a wait and see is my choice.
I've thought about going with a SAS RAID controller and 15K RAID drivers, but the cost/performance ratio comes out about the same and the 15K drives are noisey and power hungry but they're a "known" entity.

  • Seagate Barracuda ES ST3750640NS 750 GB - slow random access in MacPro

I installed four Seagate Barracuda ES ST3750640NS 750 GB disks in my MacPro (5GB RAM). They are mounted as two RAID-1 arrays (mirrored, no speed up).
It seems that also those (not just the non-ES, …AS version) suffers from slow speeds (<1MB) in random access with small blocks. How much this is representative of typical access with Mac OS X I cannot tell, but still this looks like some kind of incompatibility of the drives' firmware with a MacPro.
Does anyone have experience on how to correct that?
    Xbench 1.3 results:
    Disk Test 35.16
    Sequential 93.74
    Uncached Write 83.37 51.19 MB/sec [4K blocks]

All of the Seagate 7200.10 model hard drives have slow Random Read performance. None of the different model numbers change this fact. There is no fix for this and you will probably only notice this issue when opening a large library with Aperture or some other application that depends on a large number of small files to read.
The Randowm write performance of the Seagate 7200.10 models is actually very good. In addition, the large block copy capabilities of the 7200.10 models is exceptional.
Xbench tests make the Seagate 7200.10 model performance look much worse than it actually is.

  • Western Digital or Seagate Barracuda?!

    Hi,
I would like to purchase an additional 250gb ATA drive for my 1.25ghz G4 MDD. I previously posted on here regarding the better of the two between the Seagate or Hitach drives, but I have now ruled out the Hitachi. However, I am now divided between the Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 and the Western Digital Caviar SE. I would like to know peoples recommendations/experiences with these drives. It really is important that the drive is reliable, fast and also very quiet (all of which these drives claim to be). I did read a review that the Barracuda 7200.10 drive made a pecking noise when being accessed and therefore I would like to know if anyone else has noticed this.
All feedback would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi-
The 7200.10 series has been plagued by firmware problems that can cause slow read or write speeds in a Power Mac (or Mac Pro for that matter). Though most reports concern the SATA version, I am concerned with the 7200.10 and the native controller of a Mac. If the drive were the 7200.9, then I give it 5 thumbs up...
I have a WD Caviar in a QS G4. Very nice, very quiet (virtually silent). Makes a small "click" (very small) when sleeping or shutting down, but this is due to the the automatic head park mechanism doing what it was designed to do (nice feature). I really like the drive. • Need SATA RAID driver for RS480M2-IL(ms-7093) to install XP

    Greetings,
I have lost my floppy to install the driver for my SATA RAID and can't seem to find the right one anywhere on the web.
It's an ATI SB400 chipset that has a SIL 3112a RAID controller.
The driver doesn't appear to be on the support page: http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=proddesc&maincat_no=1&prod_no=214
If anyone can point me in the right direction, you'd be my hero.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jeff

Well, I found the correct driver, I think. It was in the ATI System driver package, on this page: http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=driverfile&dno=2427&i=1
However, I still can't get XP to recognize my drive by pressing F6 at install. Perhaps I'm not using the right files from this package (287MB!). I found what I thought might be the correct drivers in the following folder: ATIDrv/SBDrv/RAID4xx and copied all the files to a floppy. Windows sees this driver and loads it, but when it gets to the point of formatting a drive (or whatever the next step is after you hit F^ and load the driver), it says no HD found, hit F3 to restart (sure would be nice to have other options here, like load another driver).
So, here's more info about my system (read the posting guidelines since last time
    mobo: RS480M2-IL BIOS 7093v39
    PS:Thermaltake TR2-430NP
    RAM: G.Skill PC3200 1GBx2
    HD1:Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 160GB
    HD2:Maxtor Diamondmax20 160GB
Problem started when co-worker shut the machine off hard. On reboot, Invalid System Disk error and looking at RAID Bios shows drives in SYNC state. Removed the drives and attached to another machine, one looks fine so I clone it for good measure. The other is corrupted, XP wants to format as soon as it's mounted. Checking it with Filescavenger3 shows the files are still there,  but I just reformat it since I have the good image of the other disk. Now I'm trying to fix the other drive, since it still comes up as Invalid System Disk, so I want to try either using the Recovery Console to FixMBR, or do a repair install of XP. I can't find the right driver to make this happen. I do have a disk with LastXPv2.11 that will recognize the drive, but it doesn't allow me to get into the recovery console or offer to repair xp. If you know how to extract the drivers from a slipstreamed disc, that might work too. Finally, I don't know if I've update the RAID bios, or if that happens when you update the mobo bios. I did update that to v39 and the RAID BIOS shows 4.2.50.
Sorry this is so long, any ideas to help get me going here would be fantastic
    Cheers,
    Jeff
