  • ITunes Causing Vista BSOD with RAID Errors

This thread is here to collate as much information and posts on the problem regarding BSODs occuring in Windows Vista and causing RAID errors to occur.
What Happens: Start iTunes and start performing a hard drive intensive task (Importing, converting etc). iTunes will seem to 'freeze', in some cases up to five minutes, but will regardless cause Windows Vista to BSOD. On restart the RAID array will complain of errors. Most cases are that restarting again and clearing the error will be fine, though there are some reports that people have had to rebuild their array.
Common Elements: Windows Vista, iTunes, Intel RAID Chipsets (ICH6R, ICH7R and ICH8R chipsets reported so far.

Custom Intel based Generic PC   Windows XP Pro   750GB NAS Storage, DVDRW DL, 5th Gen 80GB iPod, 2nd Gen 8GB Nano (Both Black)
I'm running a dual boot with WinXP Pro SP2 as the primary OS, Vista RC1 on separate partition. I had Vista Ultimate (RC1) Release Candidate 1, a pre-release version of Vista up and running with iTunes version 7.1.1. Updating My Library, when system crashed and trashed my array.
I was running 2 400GB WD's when my RAID 1 erred. The array corrupted and after limping through several array rebuilds and Windows repairs, Win XP finally died and was unrecoverable.
I originally suspected an issue with Vista & iTunes, especially since I was running a pre-release version of Vista then I remembered reading a recent WD Support issue about some newer WD SATA Gen 2 drives failing in RAID arrays.
To make a long story short, thank God for my back-up NAS Drives, I lost my array. Traced the problem to a Raid compatibility issue with the WD drives running in full SATA ATA Gen 2 transfer rate mode and the Intel ICHR8 SATA RAID Controller. They don't play nice together when stressed with large file transfers. Replaced WD's with two Seagate 750's in RAID 1, running full SATA Gen 2 mode and have had no problems since.
Check out WD's Support forums, if you have newer WD's I'll bet it's a SATA RAID / Drive issue more than iTunes and Vista.

  • Intel RAID error in Device Manager after updating Intel Matrix Storage Console

The latest in my catalogue of problems arose after updating Intel Matrix Storage Console (IMSC) ...
Lost my RAID volume, but both drives were OK. However, IMSC seemed to be freezing, so I thought I'd install the latest version from Intel. Once installed, it gave me errors saying a plug in was not found, followed by messages saying that the SATA and RAID drivers were not installed. Device Manager thinks the drivers are OK, but the yellow triangle with the ! is shown against the Intel RAID driver. Tried un-installing and re-installing the controller, updating the drivers, different versions of IMSC and still get the yellow triangle with the !
I have been having trouble with the RAID0 set up for weeks so wonder if it has finally died? I'm out of ideas. Can anyone help?

Why don't you want to follow up with your previous thread?
It'll be confusing when you started multiple threads linking to the issue.
Sorry, I haven't posted here much so I'm not familiar with the protocols. I just thought it would be less confusing to make this a separate issue. I linked them to avoid duplicating info on my config & h/w

  • Promise Pegasus J4 striped raid - error-36

    Hi
I have a new macpro running mavericks
I have a promise pegasus j4 that I'm trying to set up as a striped raid..via thunderbolt
    I have 4x crucial m500's in it.
Using disk utility I can see the individual drives.
on each I erase date and format as mac os extended journaled
I've individually deleted the partitions on them
I've then selected the 4 drives and created a striped raid set (mac os extended journaled
Untitled striped raid set icon appears on my desktop.
Any data I write to it stops after about 2gb. error -36
I've written 100gb of data to each of the drives individually - all fine.
I've tried using softraid - same issue.
Drive Genius says i/o on disk
Crucial say it's a problem with the Promise Pegasus.
Promise say I'm creating the RAID wrong.
"Current Response : No this is not right. you need to delete the partition then create the RAID and then create the partition and formatting.
but once the Untitled striped raid set icon appears on my desktop there's no way to then create the partion and format - the options aren't there in disk utility - and now their tech support have gone silent.
    Advice appreciated
    Kindest'
    Jon

I encountered this error too, and it does indeed appear to be a weak power supply in the Pegasus J4. I am currently using the device with a sort of hackish work around...
SSDs use maximum current when writing; reading and idling draw far less power. So instead of defining one big RAID set, which causes all 4 drives to be writing nearly simultaneously on large transfers, I set the unit up as two independent RAID volumes, each comprised of two disks. This configuration works well for me since I do not do large writes to both volumes at the same time... this restriction may not be acceptable for everyone. As long as I don't write large amounts of data (over about 2 gigabytes) to both volumes at the same time, everything works reliably. This would tend to support the theory that the power supply just is not up to the task of keeping 4 M500s writing simultaneously for long periods of time...
Hope this helps someone (actually I really hope Promise improves the power supply - this unit is not exactly cheap and a wimpy power supply is pretty inexcusable).
BTW - does anyone know where you can download the Pegasus J4 FW updater software? I cannot find my original CD...

  • Raid errors *solved*

Which is more likely, that two drives in a 4 disk raid 5 configuration fail simultaneously or that the ICH10R controller is the issue instead?
When I ran the raid 5 array, everything ran much slower than it does now that the disks are not connected. Ive had one drive which at first lit up as rebuilding, then as failed a few days later, then failed to respond at all..
I unplugged power to the drives and pc runs exceptionally fast now the raid array is not online... but to test what drive was failing I plugged power back in again a week later when I had time... and all drives lit up green and working
I got the new drivers from intel, and started to rebuild the disks - it went VERY slow.. was looking at 40 hours to rebuid the volume. Except that after about 5 hours the pc BSOD.
On examining the logs, either one or two disks regularly fail and cause the pc to BSOD. I cant tell which disks are failing.
With all the other issues Ive had with this board, I am wondering if it is more likely that my board is at fault here rather than the disks. I think its unlikely to have two disks fail simultaneously like this... (assuming the logs read correctly and its not one disk...) and whatever the cause, how do I find what disk is failing?
I will also note that I have had a continuous yet intermittent problem with my Blueray drive (sata2 on the ich10r controller as well) 'disappearing' or turning off or being unresponsive or not being recognised on the controller at times. Usually it means if I want to use the drive I have to open the machine and disconnect the cable, reconnect the cable and the restart the machine for it to start recognising the drive again. I figure this may indicate a controller issue too....
My specs are all down in my signature.

    Hi,
Throw your motherboard away is my advice.  I've been experienceing exactly the same problem, and MSI support have been totally useless.  It *is* definitely your motherboard.  I've swapped disks (from Samsung to WD and Seagate), swapped power leads and SATA leads, and it is mainly happenning on port 0, and a few times on port 2, and yesterday it happenned for the first time on port4.  The only common fixture is the motherboard.
As far as I can tell, there is an inherent problem with the CIH10 controller, or the motherboard connectors.  I first thought it was the hard drives, but after having 3 out of 4 drives "fail" in just 6 weeks, I started thinking it was not the drives.  I have 3 x mirror sets.  I started off with trying RAID5, but it took so long to format the 4 drives I gave up.. I've updated the Intel drivers and the motherboard BIOS, but this has only made things WORSE.  I have a disk constantly being "disconnected", the whole PC hangs for one or two minutes, then I get a string of errors about degraded RAID sets.  I'm sick of it.  MSI support have no idea what the problem is, but suggest I return my motherboard for a swap out.  Like I'm going to do that on my main computer?  and wait 6 weeks for them to send me a motherboard with the same fault in it?  Quite frankly, I'm ditching MSI completely as their UK support team have not called me back after several days.
On a separate note, RAID5 can be as fast as RAID0, but only if you have a fast enough RAID controller that can process the data coming off the disks.  The RAID controller has to disassemble (write) or reassemble (read) the data and parity data blocks.  Typically on a home PC you will get about 3/4 of the speed of RAID0 from a RAID5 array.  On a commercial server, RAID5 and RAID0 will be about the same.

  • Is this how I stop getting a RAID error message on startup?

I have been looking around trying to find out how to resolve an error message I get - just looking to see if you can help me by letting me know if I have this correct...
I (not mine actually, but have use this Mac Pro while I work on a project) have an Apple RAID card, and on startup get this message..
"The Apple Raid Card installed on your system required your attention"
And usually within a few minutes the black curtain comes down and I need to restart.
If I simply clear the error events log in the RAID utility, will I no longer get this message?
And secondly - in the RAID utility, the bottom left corner has an almost empty battery and a yellow light - am i supposed to wait till this goes green (charged) before I ever restart or shut down the Mac?
As you can probably tell I have little Raid knowledge...
    Cheers
    Hugh

If the battery status on Raid Utility is showing yellow or not completely charged then you should definitely leave the computer on til it's completely charged and showing green. I have the Apple Raid Card in my 2008 Mac Pro 2.8 8 core. The FAQ's say that the battery reconditions itself every 3 months or so. Mine seems to do it more often. Probably cause I don't leave it on 24/7 and don't use my Mac Pro every day.
Try leaving the computer on overnight. It shouldn't take that long to charge. After it's done charging and shows green for the status, clear the message status and you should be good to go.

  • Can't read RAID Error

I have tried to pause while I am booting up but I can't seem to at teh RAID load scree and it goes away really fast so I can't read teh message I get.
Something about invoking and verdor ID?????
Is there a log or a way to get it to stop so I can ready the error?

Usually "hit pause" is pretty good advice to halt post action so you can read the error messages that flash past.  However, on the 925xNeo, that doesn't work for the ICH6R setupscreen.
    I've got to say that  I like the board, but not so well that I'd buy anything MSI again, given the zero level of customer support.  Got me once, next time, I'll give Intel a shot, because at least the error messages don't read;
"Warning: Have option ROM can not invoke (Vendor ID 8086h) (Device ID 1064H)"
Which is what that warning in ICH6R POST setup says.  Now we know what it says, does anybody KNOW what it means?  It's been suiggested in another fourm that it's the Intel chip complaining that there is a broadcom lan in residence, but I've yet to verify that.  It took me several hours to piece the error message together.

  • "Could not find RAID" error in Disk Utility

    Hello,
I could really use some help as this problem is causing me lots of headaches. I have two 500GB MyBook hard-drives connected to my MacBook Pro via two USB's. I had them setup as a mirrored RAID, and they were working properly for quite sometime. However over the past few weeks I noticed they were always in a degraded state, and Disk Utility would always rebuild them. However after the rebuild they would still have the status of "Degraded" and the next time Disk Utility opened it would start the rebuilding process yet again.
So I moved all the data on the drives to a backup, and I stopped the mirrored RAID. After erasing the data on the drives individually I attempted to setup the mirror again. However after the mirror had just about finished, and it was to the point of "bringing the RAID online" I always get an error that states "Creating RAID set failed", "Creating RAID set failed with the error: Could not find RAID.".
I'm hoping someone smarter than myself in this area can lend me some time and assistance to solving this issue.
    Thanks,
    Paul

Well. No one really came to my rescue with this question. Turned out to be a Finder issue. After reinstalling the operating system everything started working again with Disk Utility.
    Later,
    Paul

  • Xserve RAID error -36 copy or move files fail

Heres an interesting one - Xserve G4 on 10.4.11, Xserve RAID with two RAIDs is on 1.5.0 firmware.
Clean new OS, RAID unchanged - clients or local admin have same problem - copy file from one RAID bank to another results in error -36, copy fails. Duplicate a file on same RAID volume same error, copy fails but original file also disappears after error. Copies from RAID to Xserve (or to users desktop) OK, copies back seem OK. no errors recorded on server logs, no events recorded in RAID logs - all green lights but we can't get work done... RAID has write cache turned off.

    Hey Kel,
I've only seen a error -36 on a raid volume twice.. both times were days before a controller failed. I'd try swapping controllers and see if the problem follows the controller...

  • XP Install with Raid Error

    We've got:
    845E Max2 (MS-6398e) running 2x 60GB drives striped.
When we try to install XP Pro, (pressing F6 & selecting the correct driver) we eventually get :

It seems to be on the final reboot???
There is a CDRW & DVD on the standard IDE...
    Any ideas???

Grimster i agree totaly with jeanguy, you need around 25-30amps min on these boards, so try a mates psu.
Do I really need more than 18a with my system? How much money (ballpark) in US dollars do you think a adequate PSU for my rig would cost???
I am really thinking of just takeing it back and getting it replaced with the same mobo and see if that works.

  • RAID 0 Roaming Disk Problem -  Way To Recover?

I have the problem generally described in this archieved thread [RAID 0|discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2041271&tstart=-3] and will describe it below, the thread is more for point of reference.
A few days ago the RAID went down (RAID 0)along the same lines described in this thread [RAID Error|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2141573&tstart=0]
which in a nutshell, threw this error
Drive 3:5000cca349e4743d missing - Replace immediately or acknowledge loss of RAID set RS1 and associated volumes.
I immediatelly pulled out all the hard drives and cloned them in external hardware enclosures. At that point none of the drives had a fail message. During putting the drives back in I noticed that a drive sled looked slightly warped and would not fit back in properly. When the sled was in the drive would not show up, although two of the drives appeared as "roaming."
Got new sleds, and put the drives in. Could not get it the machine to boot in Safe Mode or properly from an external drive which was hooked up via Firewire (This was the system drive at the time of the freeze. It showed up as bootable when holding down the option key) or the clone of that system when placed in the machine. (I was on the phone for awhile with Apple Tach Support, and by the end it seemed it was a RAID card issue.) So I made an appointment for the Apple Genius Bar. I pulled out the old system drive with data, images and the rest and did a bare bones install of 10.5.1 (which came with the machine) and rebooted before bringing it into the Store, and the computer booted fine.
The "problem" RAID set was paritioned into two volumes. On my reboot after the install of the OS (and without using the RAID Utility to change anything, the RAID drives were simply in their bays), the two volumes are still there, sort of, as R2V1 and R2V2. Additionally all the drives SMART Status and RAID status are fine. One of the three drives is roaming however,
was and is being reported as RS1. Additionally, each of the drives in the RAID reports SMART status as fine, and each of the three drives report a RAID status of good. Additionally the RAID 0 had two volumes and both are reported currently as R2V1 and R2V2 and as being "good" and one of the drives has status of roaming. This is the furthest I have gotten trying to save this. I did not want to shut down the machine on the off chance that there is something else I can do right now before bringing the machine into the store.
The following pictures may make it easier to follow
    !http://www.dvdstepbystep.com/Raid2.jpg!
The tower is an Early 2008 tower and I upgraded the firmware on the RAID card with the newest firmware, which required 10.5.8. The base install is back to 10.5.1 on the reboot after reinstall. I am also waiting to hear back from tech support.
Didn't realize the Apple RAID Card had a bad rep until this happened. Sheesh. Missed that one
But if there is anything to try right now, it would be great.

    Thanks
I know that I have been pretty happy, and when I did lose one drive, it did what it was supposed to do.
I did have it RAID 5 at one point, but set it up for internal RAID 0 for the renders, and it has been fine for a long time. Urgh.
Early on, there were battery warnings all the time, and the battery did not charge unless the Mac was ON, which was totally stupid.
Hmmm, sounds alot like mine there.
I found that out two Christmas vacations ago when we do our two-week shutdown.
Came back in, and could not use the Mac for two days while it charged.
They've since changed it, and thankfully, it's been good since.
Good luck, let us know how the new card works out.
    SB
Thanks again and will do. Bought a bunch more hard drives and if it comes back, the first thing I do is back up the 2+ Terrabytes plus of renders (all ongoing projects), slap new drives into the tower, make it RAID 5 and to heck with the hit on speed. Have enough externals to reconfigure things, now just keeping fingers crossed

  • RAID arrays and Windows

Not sure where to post this one.  You have been very helpful before so I’ll try again.
The machine is the Media Centre in my signature.
Installed two new Maxtor SATA drives, set up as RAID 0, clean install of XP MCE. Boots on the RAID array.  Not a single problem. Installed MSI drivers, XFS video card drivers and KCorp PCI network adaptor for wireless link.  Download and install all Windows updates. All OK.
On a later start up it spends long time trying to detect RAID array, then RAID error. Automatically reboots and detects a healthy raid array. Tries to open Windows but screen goes almost black but faint Windows loading page with the short activity bar showing no activity.  If left it eventually springs to life. Tried starting in safe mode, no problem.  Restore to an earlier restore point, no better.
The RAID problem is intermittent. The Windows problem looks as if it stalls for a variable length of time before it gets going.
Don’t know where to go next.  Any suggestions?

fafner: I wanted a large disk to hold recorded TV progs, videos, CDs etc and 160GB is the max for this mainboard.  I went for 2x160GB Maxtor drives.  As I was using two drives I reasoned I might as well use RAID 0 to get a single volume and a faster machine.  In particular I read somewhere that RAID 0 halved, or nearly so, the start up time.  Who wants to wait a couple of minutes for the TV to fire up?
Fredrik:  The XFX video card drivers are in fact nVidia drivers which are the latest.
Doctor Stu:  I have subsequently installed XP on both drives individually.  On one it worked well, on the other same old problem: either the drive not found in the BIOS after the heading ‘Detect IDE drives’ or the screen fades as Windows starts up.  Checked both drives with Maxtor’s Powermax disk checking utility.  Provided the drive was connected to the SATA1 socket and the other drive not connected both passed the Full Test.  I could not get Powermax to recognise SATA2 even though both were detected correctly in the BIOS.  My conclusion is that the problem was a dodgy connection which I hope has been rectified with all the swapping around.
Is there disk testing utility that puts the disc under load similar to Mem86 for memory?
Will I try RAID again?  I doubt it even though it did start up in far less time.
    My thanks to all.

  • Where can I find Event Log ID's, produced by Intel ICH9R RAID controller on Windows Server 2003?

I need to monitor RAID errors and events by parsing Event Log, but I need a list of possible errors that I can find in event log. I'm using Intel ICH9R RAID controller. Server manufacturer (SuperMicro) said, that errors, produced by controller, are interpreted
by Winows and than are put to Event Log, so I need to find this info somewhere else.

    Hi,
As far as I know, there isn’t such as list present those Event Log ID’s for Intel ICH9R RAID controller, you may contact Intel to perform
the further research, you may also wait for other customer's experience sharing on this.
By the way, based on my experience, most of the IT guys will use the monitor application/toolkit comes with the RAID controller, so you may contact Intel
also to get more information. Thanks for your understanding.
    Best Regards,
    Vincent Hu
