Raid ... Exactly what can the RAID do with the TD230

Hi,
Have a bunch of TD23013U's and the newer TD23019U's. They both come with RAID, Intel onboard and a LSI9240-8i.
Q: Out of the box, can the onboard Intel RAID do RAID 5 or is a separate key required for it (part no please and FRU number?).....I take it it can do RAID 0,1 out of the box. Is the key not supposed to come with the unit?
The LSI RAID card, can it do 0, 1, 5 without any additional key purchase? If it cannot do a raid 5, is it not supposed to part and parcel of a shipped unit?
Thnx
Solved!

Hello Hitesh,
The TD230 has the following RAID Setup...
- SATA RAID 0, 1, 10 (Chipset)
- SATA RAID 5 Key Needed (Chipset Optional)
- SATA / SAS 0, 1, 10, 5 (HW)

  • Exactly what can you manage centrally with the Management Appliance?

So, we're thinking of getting a pair of M1070 Management Appliances to work with our cluster of C360 mail appliances (AsyncOS 7.6).
It is not completely clear (a) which things can be centrally handled, and (b) which things can be handled in a redundant manner.  It is also not clear how the redundancy works - are things copied to both all the time?  If the primary management appliance goes down for a while, are the missed logs copied over from the secondary when it comes back?  When the primary is down, does the secondary take over a virtual IP so that users will still go to the same URL for quarantines?
Logging, reporting, and message tracking all seem to be easily done centrally, and are duplicated to the redundant.
As far as I can tell, the spam quarantine can be centralised, and it seems that it is replicated to the secondary if you have AsyncOS>7.2.  I can't tell if the safelist/blocklist is replicted between the two, though, and what happens in a failover situation, although it seems it is held centrally.  I've seen conflicting information about this, one saying that secondaryconfig can duplicate spam quarantines, the other saying you need to do some sleight-of-hand with content filters to duplicate messages to both management quarantines.
Is there a way to make other quarantines on the management servers?  We'd like to have our policy quarantine held centrally, and redundant, so that if we lose a datacentre we can still release policy-quarantined messages.  I can't tell how you can set thisup.
Finally, we currently route our emails via the cluster of C360 mail appliances.  Would we continue to do this (and they send logs, quarantines etc to the management appliances), or would we have to instead route our emails via the new managment appliances, which then forward them on to the C360s?
If anyone there has successfully set up a redundant management appliance setup I'd be keen to hear the details.

I haven't set up redundant SMA's so I can't help much there... I'm reasonably sure that one acts as a backup destination for the other, but I may have that all wrong.
As far as what can be centralized, as of ESA 8.0.0 and SMA 8.1 (might still be FCS, you can request it from TAC), you can centralize Policy, Virus and Outbreak quarentines, along with the already available spam quarentine and message tracking... Set up the policies and quarentines on the ESAs, point the SMA at the two ESAs, and tell it to import the quarentines, and will bring over the data that's there and reconfig the ESA's to send the policy quarentined mail over, just like it does for the spam quarentine.
You would continue to route mail through the C360s.  The M boxes don't do mail flow, other than centralizing the quarentines, and dealing with quarentine releases...

  • What can I actually do with the Apple TV2 in the UK?

Sounds like a silly question, but im quite serious!
I know that the services differ from country to country, but im just wondering what the apple TV can do by its self.
I'm guessing that we CANT watch NetFlix as they havent launched in the UK?
We CAN watch Youtube and Vimo?
Can we stream content directly from Apples servers (ie, if I rent a movie, do I have to download it onto my mac first?)
    what about TV shows?
Again, sorry for sounding a little silly, but I just want to know
    Thanks for all your help
    N

    Hi Neil.
Winston, Chenks and I are all from UK and have used AppleTVs for many years - I always found it strange that UK posters were more prolific than US posters here, but I think that may have been down to better availability of streaming services in US generally until recently compared to UK and AppleTv may have had a niche market here - may be wrong.
AppleTv1 was originally an 'iTunes extender' for compatible media (see specs).
You could sync media from iTunes to it to play with computer off or stream additional media from itunes when computer was on.
Later SD/HD Rentals and TV/Movie/Music/Music Video purchases came to AppleTV1, syncing back to iTunes.
It allowed access to mobileMe, Flickr, youtube media, podcasts and internet radio.
AppleTV 1 had some benefits over 2 but was also underpowered hardware wise compared to the newer unit (which some would argue is still the case due to lack of 1080p support).
AppleTV2 has been repositioned less as a vehicle to play itunes content, but more of an online rental device, with some internet services supported and in my view a strong emphasis as an accessory for iPhones/iPad/iPod tocuhes using Airplay.
You can still play compatible content from iTunes (again see specs on Apple's pages).
Netflix not available in UK but apparently Netflix coming in next 12 months - no idea if AppleTV will support.
There are some premium subscription  US sports intrenet feeds - personally I have no interest, some are US only, some are worldwide with a valid subscription.
YouTube still available, Vimeo, Flickr and MobileMe remain as do Apple's Radio Stations and Podcasts.
US had Movie and Tv Rentals we only had Movie rentals.  US dropped the TV Rentals.
US it seems can purchase content not just rent.  We can't currently in UK outside of iTunes.
Airplay from an iDevice (newer models on the whole) will allow apps enabled for Airplay to stream the display to AppleTV.  iPad2 and iPhone 4S also support video mirroring on TV.  Macs currently don't support mirroring but do support iTunes Airplay.
    So Netflix - not currently.
    YouTube/Vimeo - yes.
Stream content from Apple - yes - if you have a slow (<6 Mbps) connection HD wil have to prebuffer for minutes to hours depending on speed of connection (4 Mbps takes 30-40 mins for movie to prebuffer).  If you have a slow connection you can rent in SD near instantly if you have 2.5 Mbps or so.  You can also rent in iTunes and play on AppleTV but choice is different (less HD).
TV Shows - no rentals anymore anywhere but purchased shows in itunes can be streamed over LAN.
Also iCloud support will emerge eg Photostream and who knows what else in the future (US ahead of us with streaming content from Apple's servers of purchases previously made and 'available').

  • My MacBook Retina has been shutting off multiple times per day. It is beginning to happen more frequently. What can I do to locate the exact issue? My warranty has expired so I would like to get to the bottom of it without taking it in to an apple store.

It is beginning to shutdown with no warning more frequently. What can I do to locate the exact issue? My warranty has expired so I would like to get to the bottom of it without taking it in to an apple store.
I am currently learning how to do diagnostics on mac hardware but I am not a native mac user. It is unlikely that this is a software issue. Please, any input will be helpful.

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).

  • My MacBook Air can't get past the gray screen with the apple logo. What's the fix?

My MacBook Air can't get past the gray screen with the Apple logo, so I can't login. Does anyone know the fix for this?

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a boot failure is to secure your data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since your last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    a. Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in the support article linked below, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
How to back up and restore your files
    b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode by holding down the key combination command-T at the startup chime. Connect the two Macs with a FireWire or Thunderbolt cable. The internal drive of the machine running in target mode will mount as an external drive on the other machine. Copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode
    c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to boot, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can boot now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
Before reconnecting an external storage device, make sure that your internal boot volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
    Step 3
Boot in safe mode.* The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Post for further instructions.
When you boot in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, your boot volume is damaged and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to step 5.
If you can boot and log in now, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.) If the boot process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 4
Sometimes a boot failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 5
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see above for instructions.) Select your startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it produces. Look for the line "Permissions repaired successfully" at the end of the output. Then reboot as usual.
    Step 6
Boot into Recovery again. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the OS. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.
    Step 7
Repeat step 6, but this time erase the boot volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer your data from a backup.
    Step 8
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.

    Hi Brian,
Thanks restoring and restarting didn't fix my problem - i have started it fresh and still it doesn't work. Basically I press ONCE on the remote, after the machine has not had any commands for 10 minutes, and the cursor skips from one end of the menu to the other - so I can't choose network or update software etc - I sometimes manage to stop it randomly in the middle of the menu if I press on a command in the middle of the cursor skipping all the menu steps...not sure what the problem is but I have basically not used my brand new apple tv since I bought it for that reason! I should call Apple support I suppose! grrrr hate wasting time with stuff like this!
    Thanks for your help though!

Same as you would if you bought a pc; copy everything from your old computer to your new one.  Then you can just sync everything from the new computer, as you did with the old one.

It sounds like your phone is in recovery mode, which means it needs to be restored through iTunes on your computer in order to get out of it.

If you have a external USB enclosure - trying installing your hard drive in that enclosure and connect it to your usb port - restart your macbook while holding down the options key.  If you Macbook boots to your desktop then you have a faulty cable.  If you get the same error, then your hard drive just died on you.
    good luck.

Sounds like you may have a harddrive issue.  You are probably going to need to get that changed out and then install the OS X again to get it going.

If you want to sync it to the iPad from that Mac, you need to upgrade it to at least 10.5.8.
If you want to copy the music to another Mac, you don't. Move the iTunes folder of the item in the Finder's sidebar over as you would any other folder. If you put it somewhere other than the Music folder, launch iTunes with the Option key held down and point it to that location.
