Raid fault??
I have a 7835HP with a mirrored array. I noticed a blinking red light(trash can with X) on the drive. I checked the hp array tool and there are no errors with the array or the drive. I then hot swapped a new drive in the array to replace the suspect bad drive, the array mirrored the drived but then the same light is now flashing on the new drive. anyone seen this before, is this an indication of a controller going bad? did a search on cisco and cant seen to find documentation for the hard drive lights.
Nick
Nick,
Did you check for any over heating issues? How long has this been in operation, if you can afford to power down let it cool off, clean any dust, tighten all connections and re start.
This is usually power, controller or environment issue.
Good luck,
Baseer.

Hello all,
I am using an XServe Raid in my Netware environment. I have two Novell 5.1 servers, one is plugged in one half and the other is plugged into the other half of the XServe. It has been working good so far.
My question is, that I just thought of is if I have problems with it both server may be affected. How can I accomplish fault tolerance with the XServe? is there an easy way to put another Xserve on my network and have it copy the other one on a regular basis?
Thanks,
JaySure, you can mirror the halves of the Xserve RAID, or do a scheduled replication. The first will give you availability, the second will be a backup.

RAID not fault tolerant on K7N2 Delta 2 Platinum?
Hi all,
I'd really appreciate your help with this puzzle.....
Got a new mobo & 3k Barton chip.... Installed 'em into rig described in my sig below.
Minimum hardware was installed for this operation:
new mobo & chip
1 gig mem card
CDRW
Floppy drive
SATA drives x2 each on separate SATA port
video card
Entered Bios on 1st boot:
Set SATA to enabled in IDE RAID window
Boot priority to CD Rom for install
Hard disk boot priority to SATA Mirror
F10'ed into NVRAID BIOS:
Set up the RAID as a mirror (RAID 1) with optimal stripe size
cleared & reformatted both discs
Mirror is recognised as healthy on reboot.
Booted into WIN XP SP2 slipstreamed install (this disc has been used successfully before on my previous mobo so I know it works)
Pressed F6 & loaded NV RAID class driver & NV nForce Storage Controller successfully
Did the Windows install routine & this is where it starts to deviate from what is written in the manual....
the request to install the RAID driver during the GUI part of the install never appeared (but this is described as a "might be prompted" in the manual so I wasn't too bothered by its non-appearance) and the driver floppy did spin up at one point so I assumed it had installed each drive automatically
Went into WinXP and finished the install...
Surprisingly, both RAID drives are now visible individually in the systray as removable drives under the SAFELY REMOVE HARDWARE icon.
Went into Disk Management expecting the Initialize & Convert Disk Wizard to appear but no sign of it: RAID drives are visible as ONE drive (as you would expect) but are NOT fault tolerant.
Things I've done differently each time I installed:
Tried to convert the mirror to a dynamic disc but this also failed every time.
Installed nForce2 system drivers before & after going into Disk Management on different installs
Installed NVRAIDMAN.exe and this reports the mirror as functional & healthy.
Left the floppy in the drive during the GUI part of WIN XP installing itself and removed it on other install
I've read the nvRAID FAQ & this isn't covered by it.
Can't find any reference to the Initialize & Convert Disk Wizard in Microsoft Help & Support, except in a Windows Server 2003 KB article, which I can't find again....
I've repeated the whole process several times to ensure I haven't missed anything, but the end result is always the same.
So I now have a weird mirror array that is not fault tolerant in Windoze Disk Management - is it doing what it's supposed to?
Any ideas??As it seems you are doing extensive tests, i would suggest a simple one:
install as you have (where the RAID manager tells you it is setup correctly and redundant and windows does not see it as redundant), power off and take one drive off. Reboot and see the result. (it should still work and the controller should tell you that redundancy is not valid anymore)
After that, power off, replug the drive and see if it will reconstruct the array.
Try for the 2nd drive.
Then, you will be sure that redundancy is present...
It seems that with SATA, you can even hotswap the drives (hence the appearance of the drives in the SAFELY remove box). -
After creating RAID 5 for hard disks, CIMC shows Modrate fault
Dear all,
There are two UCS servers which the model is C240 M3
When I created RAID 5 for hard disks, CIMC shows Modrate fault.
The warring message is
storage virtual drive 0 degraded: please check the storage controller, or reseat the storage drive ucs
anybody has idea for this case? Thank you!Is it an solution? Thank you!
The warning message appears if you do not have a Battery BAckup Unit Instllated on the server. I just worked with Cisco TAC and following is the solution.:
1. Launch KVM Console of the server
2. Power Cycle the Server
3. When LSI RAID configuration window displays, press CTRL+H and start the RAID Configuration Utility.
4. Click on Virtual Drive. Example Virtual Drive 0.
5. Change Default Write Mode to "Write Through" and click "Change"
6. Press "Yes" to take the effect.
7. Exit from RAID Configuration Utility nad restart the server.

I recently had a drive fail on me. It took down the RAID, and our web site that was served off that drive. I thought I had the Raid setup right, but I guess I was wrong.
I have a slot loading G4 xServe. It's connected with both fiber channels to the xServe RAID. I had 2 drives on the left side, and 2 on the right. Both drives were set as Raid 1. I then used the Server to Raid 0 the drives.
Well, this didn't work. Can someone help me to set the server so that I won't lose the web site if another drive fails? If I didn't make sense, please ask.
Thanks!
Pismo G3 / Ti G4 1k / 2 xServe G5 / 2 xServe G4/RAID Mac OS X (10.4.3)The only way you should have lost any data was if you
lost two disks on either side, in which case
you would lose the array.
You can also lose data if the software striping breaks irreparably, which has happened several times to me. I wouldn't ever use Apple's software striping on a mission critical RAID.
If it were my box, I'd only use the hardware RAID (mirroring) - leave the software level 0 out. Or get a 3rd drive for each side and use RAID 5 instead. Both these options, of course, force you to use two volumes instead or RAID'ing them into one, but it's much more stable that way.

MSI 6380 (KT3 Ultra Raid) Audio fault in XP
Hi.
Has anyboys got any ideas as to why my Realtek ac'97 onboard audio doesnt work in Windows XP?
The Board is a MSI KT3 Ultra. MSI site says it an XP driver, but when i install XP, in my system devices i get the yellow "!" mark and the message "device drivers not installed"
If i through 2k on the go in first time, every time.
I've always hated XP, and was finally getting over it untill this !!!!
Does anyone have an ideas?
Cheers,
DanI looked at the drivers for your m/b and I can say I'm not comfortable with the fact that the driver for the RealTek is for all win O/S's. If you recently upgraded from win2k to XP, something is still amiss. I agree with the last reply, which was try drivers from RealTek site. You might want to try uninstalling the drivers you have for the device and reinstalling the new ones. Might want to try and update everything while your at it (Bios & 4 in 1 chipset drivers). Leaving nothing else to chance.

Hello (hopefully someone can shed some light on my issue)
I own as above a MAC PRO (Early 2008) this has a RAID card installed along with two 15k.7 cheetah hdd (320gb) and a spare drive, (which i made a regular drive)
a while ago i had to replace the RAID card battery, so i did this, over a year later the same thing happened again, but as previous just left it and the system seemed fine for ages, until last night i was working in PHOTOSHOP and everything just froze and the screen kind of appeared GREEN, could not do a single thing. So restarted the mac, this time grey screen for ages and a message appeared, (macs version of blue screen) (see attached).
I restarted the machine and this time a flashing question mark folder!
could not do a thing.
so i found my copy of snow leopard and got the computer to run this and at least launch the DISK UTILITY and (Interestingly in the drop down menu RAID UTILITY was also in the menu) but it did not matter which utility i used the (RAID or DISK) neither could see any of drives, just the dvd drive.
so looked around on you tube and various forums and discovered if i take out the RAID CARD and re-plug the main lead from the RAID card back in to the LOGIC BOARD I would be reverting the MAC to a normal regular non-RAID computer.
After performing this HARDWARE task and inserting all three HDD, and running the DISK utility from the drop down menu via the SNOW LEOPARD disc.
(interestingly since the RAID card had been removed the RAID UTILITY from the drop down menu no longer appeared). running disk utility I can now only see the regular (spare) hdd and DVD Drive, but the two RAID HDD , again, still do not show up DISK UTILITY?
O.K. so i could chuck out the RAID card (AND RAID HDD) and just go with a regular set-up, and run a back restore from Time Machine on a NEW hdd purchased.
but what is wrong with the RAID, is the card at fault or are both HDD used for the RAID knackered? can i perform any tests, to see whats what?
thanks for your help in advanced.hello people, the issue was in fact the GRAPHICS card nothing to do with the HDD or RAID system ( although this did cause issues with the RAID system it basically lost its way) below is my replay to another similar problem some one else had!
working in photoshop and then everything stopped working and the lot froze! only option was to force shutdown (via button).
and try to restart, hoping all was fine, this was not the case :-(
I had the added issue of the RAID card system, that i have, this was confused to say the lease and would not behave or work, causing the start up to hang.
so i thought the HDD must be bust and the root cause. ( but soon learnt it was not the cause )
...bought a new HDD removed the RAID card and replugged the cable from RAID card into LOGIC board, ( making the computer act like any normal non-RAID system). I managed to install the OSX, using the snow leopard disk way. once the mac was running, i started to notice the screen would flicker and started to see 'artefacts'. so i started to reveal my symptoms to the web and forums and soon discovered that my graphics card could be the issue all along?.
(nvidia geforce 8800gt 2x dvi).
I read up on that a fix, could be either A. reply the thermal paste, as the card could be over heating or B. stick the card in the oven trick.
Tried option A. first and nothing still issues, so last night took the plunge carried out option B. and ta da it worked! i even managed to run
from my new HDD my lasted install OS X, absolutely fine. I then thought, maybe i could repair my RAID so replugged all the HARDWARD back in and
carried out a disk repair and disk permissions on drives( took a small amount of time), via the SNOW LEOPARD disc - (Disk utilities) and this worked and now have my system working as it was just over 6 days ago.
what was the cost to get this? bought a new hdd so 40.00gbp and thermal paste and cleaner kit ( your still need to do this ) search video card trick on you tube.
and renew thermal paste, approx 15.00gbp, technically i don't need the new HDD, but it was all part of the trial and error way i went. ( i do have extra storage as a result!)" -
Can i convert an ix-2 to raid 0
In the provided documents it says the operating system for the ix-2 is on the hard drives.
So if i convert from raid 1 to raid 0 will it erase the operating system?
ThanksHello jimbarnes
I fully agree with wolliballa, changing from RAID 1 to RAID 0 will in normally cause a data erase on the drives and a backup before any RAID change is made needs to be done.
If you do end up running the RAID 0 it would leave you with zero fault taulerance, however if you are needing the capacity and have backup proceedures in place it should work fine. I recommend using a cloud service for remote/off-site backups and for more of a local backup, use a usb hard drive connected directly to the unit. If cloud backups do not work for the configuration you are using it in, having a usb drive stored remotely and periodically updated locally from the unit would be the next best solution to protect your data.

MSI 865 PE NEO 2 (MS-6728 v.1) raid problems
Hello guys, hope somebody can help before i throw everything out of the window.
Hi had this mobo since 2003.
p4 2.66 800 fsb
memory pc 2700 333mhz
Ati radeon 256 mb
2 ide hds 120gb each on onboard promise as raid optimized for performance (raid0)
Everything start about a month ago.
suddenly Pc dont boot from array.( i think was a power cut)
after playing a bit around I went to fast build (ctrl -f ) delete the array and with option 1 auto detect the array again.
Pc booted and everything was fine, then messages like " windows no disk error" start to pop up everytime i boot up again.
I taught about malaware of some kind and even try to reassign a letter for hds that always appeared as "C".
then very frustrated I had the "brilliant" idea of using window restore point to restore windows some time before I had this problem.
Then no more boot guys the man lost control of the machine.
i tried to use recovery consolle, when i go "chkdsk" says: disk appear to have 1 or more unrecoverable errrors.
MAP do not shows the disks (maybe `cause raid?).
the funny thing is that on fastbuild (ctrl-f) a bootable array is present and "Functional",but when i do option 1 (array autoset up) says "no available disks".
I have tried to reinstall Promise pdc20378 driver(cannot find original floppy anymore so i have download driver) to reinstall windows XP(SP2),pressed F6 and then s messages says unexpected error on line bla bla bla.
It does not allow me to install a fresh copy of xp.
Do you think is the promise raid controller fault?
do I need to change/reinstall the driver(maybe i have downloaded the wrong 1).
There is not very important stuff on hds, just years of downloaded movies and songs, which i would like to keep if poss.
Any suggestions before I throw this superb mobo of the 2003 and get the new p35 chipset?
Is the machine finally beat the man?
I thank you all in advance
A sleepless manThanks HenryW,
I have create the dikette and done the test.
It did not recognize the disks on the onboard promise ata raid.....so i plug them on the normal ide
I ve done quick scan first and 1 of the disk came up with error 0x73 (defective device ..excessive shock),
then i ve performed advanced scan on the same disk and gave me a different error code 0x72 defective device ..S.M.A.R.T failure.
I guess 1 of the disk has gone, unless i can repair it somehow with this utilities,or disks have to be read 2gether on the raid controller..
Well i ll try to see on hitachi website, any more suggestions please let me know.
I thank you for the great help you are giving -
While transferring several files to the G-Raid, the G-Raid device locks up with the following warnings: "The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in (whatever file) can't be read or written (Error code - 36).” NOt sure this is a G-Raid problem, can anyone help?
This is likely a problem with the drive itself. This error indicates unspecified I/O errors with the drive, which can be from a hardware fault, or a formatting issue. If the drive has valuable data on it, then try connecting it to another PC to get the data off, and then try fully partitioning and formatting the drive with Disk Utility. If this corrects the error then you should be able to use the drive again as it was likely a formatting issue, but if the problem continues then it is likely a hardware fault and the best solution is to be safe and replace the drive.

Lag/Pause believed to be caused by RAID [SOLVED]
I have installed arch about 4 months back and ever since been experience and Lag/Freezing issue which occurs anywhere from 1-30 seconds at a time. I have been looking for solutions and fixing issues I have found with my system in order to find a solution. It does not seem to be any issue with the hardware, everything is new. I have even gone so far as to swapping out certain parts such as the memory and have even updated the bios firmware.
I believe this is an issue with the way the raid is setup, as harddrive I/O will cease when this happens. If there is something else that may be causeing this issue then I am unsure what it could be.
I have posted my dmesg, mdstat and mdadm.conf files below. Also my system is still experience two bugs. The first one is the RAID initalization failed message durring systm initialization even though the raid array was assembled fine by the kernel. And the other on is the error message from LVM2 durring initalization "File-based locking initialisation failed". That error has supposively been fixed from an update though I am still getting it.

Also I am not sure about the "unknown partition table" messages in the dmesg output. I am not sure if they are somthing I should be concerned about or could be a contributing factor.
If you need more information about my problem just ask an I will post it.
Last edited by KrimReaper (2010-08-05 18:44:01)I have been doing some searching around and have found some new information.
https://raid.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Performance
I found there were some fixes for the "apparent pauses in the stream of IO" that I believed I was experiencing as well. I had in the meantime changed my raid array to raid 5 to increase the read performance which had helped with my lag issue but it was still apparent. So I did two of the optimizations listed on the page. But before I did I ran a benchamark on my current raid 5 array.

After changing the stripe cache size it looks like there has been a massive improvement in output speeds. Though I have not used the desktop environment of the computer yet nor have I been watching movies/downloading or doing anything I/O heavy yet of this change. I think this may have been the root of my problem. When I have used the computer for a few more weeks I will report here again whether or not lag/pause problem has been solved. -
I have read through a lot of information on disk usage, storage rules for an editing rig, users inquiries/member responses in this forum and I thank each and every one of you – especially Harm.
In building my new workstation, I purchased five (5) WD 1T, 7k, 64M SATAIII hard drives and an Areca RAID card, ARC-1880ix-16-4G, which I plan to use primarily as my media/data disk array. The workstation will use a 128GB SATAIII SSD as the OS/program drive and I will transfer two (2) WD Raptor/10k SATA 70GB drives from my current system for pagefile/scratch/render use. I tentatively plan on using a mobo SATAIII port for the SSD and mobo SATA ports with a software RAID (level 0) for the 10k Raptors.
In reading the Areca Instruction manual, I am now considering exactly how I should configure the 5 physical 1TB drives in terms of RAID Level(s), Volume Sets, and RAID Sets. I must admit that I like the opportunity of allowing for a Dedicated Hot Spare as I am generally distrustful of the MTBF data that drive vendors tout and have the bad experience in the past of losing data from a mal-configured RAID array and a single drive hardware failure (admittedly, my fault!).
In line with the logic that one doesn’t want to perform disk reading while trying to write at the same time (or vice-versa), I am thinking the approach above should work OK in using the mobo disk interface and both software and external hardware RAID controllers without having to create separate RAID level configurations within a Volume Set or further dividing up the physical drives into separate RAID sets. I know in forum messages that Harm noted that he had 17 drives and I could envision a benefit to having separate RAID sets in that situation, but I am not at that point yet.
To some degree I think it might be best to just create one RAID Level on one Volume Set on one RAID Set, but want to solicit thoughts from veteran controller users on their workflows/thoughts in these regards.
Anyone care to share thoughts/perspectives? Thanks
BillThanks for the speedy feedback Harm - I appreciate it.
I was thinking RAID level 3 as well.
Of course, it's always something! I purchased the Caviar Blacks by mistake - which are non-TLER. I will work with EggHead to return the ones I purchased and replace them with RE4 versions as I'm not thrilled about the possibility of the controller declaring the volume/disks degraded unnecessarily and although I have the DOS utility WDTLER where one is supposed to be able to enable/disable TLER on WD drives - I suspect WD is way beyond that now anyway with current builds.
I agree with you about just testing the performance of the options for the raptors - on the mobo and then on the controller. When I benchmark them I'll post the results in case others are curious.
Thanks again....off to EggHead! -
Hi,
I've a problem arising from the replacement of a drive in a Proliant ML370 G3 RAID 5 array.
What happened is one disc in the array failed. I replaced it and selected the "F1" rebuild option. The system then appeared to start the rebuild, both the green arrow and the green HD icon on the replaced disc flashing. However, when I returned to the server, over a week later, I found that the HD light had gone out but the green arrow continued to flash on occasion. I had expected the HD icon to remain illuminated and the arrow to flash every so often. When I checked in Disc Manager (Windows 2003 Server) this reported that although both partitions allocated to the array were healthy, there was no fault tolerance. I have since rebooted the server which then responded that the same disc had failed and presented me with a rebuild option.
I've now tried to rebuild this array three times without success, the result being the same each time I try. What am I missing?
I'd appreciate any suggestions
PhilYou gave a very nicely detailed list of datum ... thanks, that's rare!
Now ... one other bit ... you mention media being on the Thunderbolt RAID5 ... is everything there, including cache/database/previews/project-file, or just the media? I know that if say everything else was on the system drive, this would probably happen ... the media is the 'easiest' part of the disc-in/out chain as it's mostly "simple" reading of files, those other things are heavy read/write items. I'm assuming you've probably put most of it on that RAID, as the folks on the Tweaker's Page would oft posit.

My hardware RAID 1 only showing up in disk utility and not finder.
Last week I finally was able to take my early 2011 iMac in to have my Seagate 1TB hard drive replaced for the recall.
Late 2010 model iMac
OS X 10.6.8
OWC Mercury Elite Pro 4TB x 4TB Hardware RAID
When I took it in the RAID 1 was working just fine. When I finally got the iMac back and booted everything up the RAID 1 was getting the dialog box that read "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer."
I have tried going into disk utility to see if I can verify the disk and then saw it is coming up as two different volumes... Along with those two different volumes, I can not go to click verify as it is greyed out.
I contacted OWC and they said they have never heard of this and had two solutions, to try a software like diskwarrior, or if that didnt work I can take the drives out and try another external dock to see if it is the RAID hardware.
If anyone has any ideas as to what could help with this situation that would be great as I was under the impression (and told by a number of other people) that having a RAID 1 as my backup was good and should not need anything else. I just want to be able to get all the data off then I will rebuild it or send it into OWC.
Thanks!!!!So a fault in the Hardware Raid controller could make it not read properly? I am planning on having a good backup set up after this!
As for the screenshot, the original was not set up with the SoftRaid. When I got the computer back I installed that to see if that may pick it up and make it at least readable to save the data on it. The two in question are the highlighted 4TB drives, which befor also read as one drive as it was set up in the OWC enclosure as a hardware raid.
