RAID for speed....for use with home recording

Hi all, I want to get my G5 dual 2.0 faster for home recording with logic 8 using another hard drive. I was told RAID is the way to go? I am NOT familiar with RAID at all or how to do this but I am very good at picking this stuff up. Unfortunately this G5 only has 4 slots for RAM so I can only max out at 4GB. Can anyone tell me how to make this machine fastest I can make it? Thank you. BTW I have 160GB hard drive now running Leopard, which is the highest I can go.

Xserve RAID is a Fibre Channel Storage Area Network (FC SAN) storage hardware product, and it has been discontinued. The replacement product is the Promise SAN storage controller series, and that is probably out of your price range.
As for RAID...
RAID-0 is also known as striping. Clumps of data are written to each disk, so you end up with the aggregate speed of two disks. But if one disk fails, you're rolling in your backups.
RAID-1 is also known as mirroring or shadowing, and you can survive the loss of one disk. Read performance is decent, write performance is slower as you have to write to both disks.
RAID-5 is a format best avoided; it's an old scheme from when disks were dinky and expensive. This format engenders massive I/O recovery loads on failures (approximately 80% of your total I/O bandwidth into the array is consumed for hours, and potentially as long as overnight for a bigger array), and the load increases as disk capacity increases, and (surprisingly) prone to blowing a second disk during recovery due to the I/O load, and leaving you with a catastrophic array failure. The bigger your disks (or the more unstable your disks), the more likely a second error will arise during recovery, meaning that RAID-5 is a format best avoided. It's comparatively slow. The Apple hardware RAID-5 controller performance isn't comparable with mid- or upper-end SAN-based controller RAID performance, in my experience with both. (Various of those SAN controllers have fully virtualized storage, so the whole concept of RAID is, well, rather different.)
RAID-6 (various names) is a variant of RAID-5, with additional replicated data. If you want RAID-5, then RAID-6 is usually a better choice as it's less prone to blowing a disk during recovery.
RAID-10 is a combination of RAID-0 and RAID-1, where you have striping across a mirror. It's a decent-performing RAID controller, and it doesn't have the massive recovery load.
RAID-50 is a combination of RAID-0 and RAID-5.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAID
RAID is not an archival strategy. If your data is important, you need a copy not on your RAID array.
Best bang for your money is probably a used Intel-based server of some ilk; the QPI-based Xeon boxes are screaming-fast boxes. A box swap for whatever G5 box this is. Spending a whole lot on a G5-class box isn't going to be particularly effective.
Best "cheap" bang for your money is probably a SSD; your existing capacity is in the same range as the entry-level SSD drives. A disk upgrade. Below that, you're left with either an internal upgrade, or (depending on which G5 box you have) a PCI-X-based, or a FireWire-based or USB-based external storage, in decreasing relative order of performance.
As for home recording, if you're running a G5-class box, then pretty much anything out there will work; performance will probably be adequate. Once you figure out what your I/O load and your CPU load might be, you'll probably either be happy with a minimal (disk) upgrade, or you'll be looking for a new box. You'll inevitably be looking at a box upgrade over time as the PPC gear falls off the supported list for the products you're using, however.

  • Which iMac for use with Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom

Any opinions on which iMac is best for use with Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom. Not sure if the 2.7 i5 with 512 graphics card is Plenty of power or if upgrading to the 3.1 i5 or 3.4 i7 is a wiser choice given the price differences. Appreciate the help

So I was reading over your post, and even though this is older and has to do with CS5, I have some information for CS6 that will be relevant to your question now that it is time to upgade the software. In general Photoshop has always been more about RAM than Processing power, though that is important too. Until CS5 it could never quite take advantage of what multi-core processors really had to offer, and even the graphics card didn't really effect much of it outside of certain features and the 3D optio
Now that is no longer true and Adobe can effeciently use all aspects of the computer to give you much better performance.
So much so that I was able to buy a brand New ASUS with the following specs:
    Dual Core 2.2GHz Processors
8GB of RAM (4GB original to the machine)
Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit OS
    320GB HDD w/ 5400RPM
This machine not only runs photoshop CS6 and Launches in less than 5 Seconds... it can run Premier and After Effects as well, and this Laptop cost me less than $400 (on sale at Best Buy 2 Weeks Ago. You don't have to buy something this cheap, but isn't it great that you can and still run Master Collection effectively?

  • What harddrives are approved for use with ix4-200d?

    Hi,
I found an article on the Lenovo site for the process of swapping out all 4 hard drives in an ix4-200d, but what I can't find is an article showing the list of approved/recommended hard drives for use with the ix4-200d.  Can anyone point me to such an article?
My ix4-200d has a 4x500GB configuration (Seagate ST3500412AS drives).  I'd like to swap them for either 2TB or 3TB drives, so I can have one place to store all my raw video, which right now is spread out over three different devices.  Also, if you have any advice or gotchas to look out for when I swap out the drives, I'd love to hear you on that matter.
    Thanks,
    William

    Hello vitorpereira
In regards to the ix4-200d and ix4-200d CE, Iomega/LenovoEMC never created an approved list of drives.  When a disk failure occured the disk should be replacing with a matching drive if at all possible.
When it is not possible to use a matching disk model, a similar disk should be used.  This would be a disk with the same manufacturer, capacity and rotation speed.
For the ix4-200d specifically, the units shipped with either a 500GB, 1TB, or 2TB Seagate Barracuda LP (5900rpm) Hepburn disks.  ST3500412AS, ST31000520AS, ST32000542AS
That is what the ix4-200d units were qualified to use.  Outside of those three specific drive models you will be dealing with hypothetically compatible disk options.
The recommendations that Wesley made previously are correct.  You should go though the ix4-300d list find a model that is similar to the stock drive or at least within the capacity limits of the device model.  (ix4--200d is 2TB disks, ix4-200dce is 3TB disks)
If a different disk models are used in either version of the ix4-200d, it is highly recommended that all disks be eventually replaced with the new model of disk for RAID stability.  to do this, the Capacity Upgrade Guide should be followed.

  • V-41 tcode error :Table 304 is not defined for use with condition type PR00

    Hi All,
I am trying to create a BDC using the transaction V-41.
    The first screen has fields:
ConditionType and Table, where I have to fill values ZPM1 and 800 respectively.
But as soon as I enter the tcode v-41 and say enter, the above mentioned fields are already having the  values 'PR00' and ' 304'. Normally if you take an example fo t-code VA02, all fields are blank.
Then an error message  is displayed:
Table 304 is not defined for use with condition type PR00
This behaviour is not allowing me to use the BDC feature.
Please advise me on why this is happening. What are the possible solutions I can use to clear these values programmatically?
Can anything be done via customizing?
    Regards,
    Namita.

    Dear ILHAN ,
Well the problem you are facing is having the following solution:
Table 304 is not defined for use with condition type PR00
    Message no. VK024
    Diagnosis
The selected condition type does not fit in the condition table, that is the basis for the condition record. Alternatively the selected condition type is not included in the condition types that were selected on the selection screen or that are defined in the variant of the standard selection report.
    Procedure
Úse F4 help to choose a valid condition type.
If this does not give you the required condition type, check in Customizing for condition types and the related access sequences.
In the condition maintenance also check Customizing for the selection report (pricing report), that you have selected in the navigation tree, using the standard condition table as a reference.
    I hope this helps.
    It has worked for me.
I gave it a try and what I am getting using the transaction V-41 is create Price condition (PR00) : Fast Entry.
Please award points if you find it useful.
    Regards,
    Rakesh

  • I downloaded Motion 5 onto my laptop for working while on the road. I want to put it my desktop for use at home how do I transfer the software to the desktop?

    Super new to Motion 5
First..the easy ?,  I want to transfer the software from laptoip to desktop for use at home.
Second, I bought this to try to animate a steam engine and the various implements that it can power. I started with a jpeg and then wanted to make a flickering fire in the cumbustor, show the heat rising up through the boiler, piston moving etc.. does that need to be done in separate layers like in photoshop elements and then attach the behavior or separate groups?
    Thanks!!

Reply to "First ... the easy?" Hopefully it is easy. If the desktop has the same log-in to the App Store as the laptop then all you have to do is:
    1. boot up the desktop and log in.
    2. go to the App Store and check for software updates (click on the apple in the upper left corner - it's a Mac, isn't it? - and select "Software updates ...")
2a. If it isn't a Mac, then go to the App Store and log in with the same name and password as what the application was bought with,
    3. With a Mac, the App Store will check the computer for for updates, discover Motion 5 isn't there, and let you download it.
Unless there is something unusual, that should about do it. Hopefully I haven't muddled a step, but if so, hopefully you can work your way through.
As for the Part B of the post, the flickering flame, that's going to take more work. Sounds like an interesting project, though.

  • Does an upgrade to ilife 11 contain idvd for use with mountain lion (10.8.5)?

Does an upgrade to ilife 11 contain iDVD for use with mountain lion (10.8.5)?  I received an advertisement about upgrading to iLife 11 and it discusses sharing via iDVD, which was disabled when I upgraded to Mountain Lion OS 10.8.5.  Would purchasing the iLife 11 download restore the functionality of iDVD, or is this just another way to get the sheep to upgrade iMovie with no way to export to iDVD or equivalent.  Why is there no Apple warning that Mountain Lion disables and does not support iDVD?  I used to think Microsoft was a trickster, but I'm of the opinion that Apple meets or exceeds their slippery machinations.  Am I just stuck with purchasing a 3rd party software to replace iDVD?

If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailier like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Software or eBay.com.  Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.
Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar.  Select Size = Medium or Large.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Laptop options for use with PrE 11 (£500 ish)

    Hello,
I'm currently looking to buy a laptop that will allow me to edit various video projects on the move using Premiere Elements 11 (may upgrade at some point). This will serve as my main editing device until I upgrade my desktop, then serve as a portable editing station as I will be at uni next year as well as traveling a lot this year. I do a mix of animation and live action short film work using 1080p footage from my Canon 600D. I am currently looking at the £500 mark, I know it's tough to get a good editing laptop at that price, but I'd rather not spend much more. Currently I have found 3 options, and was wondering if anyone had any advice. The aspects of each laptop I am concerned about are highlighted in red

  • Best wireless router for use with Powerbook 15"

Not everyone uses the Apple Airport, and some who do have mixed feelings about the various models.
What is the best wireless router, from any manufacturer, for use with an AlBook? What has the least problems, most reliable, strongest signal, fewest drops, best range, etc in your experience.

    Joeski,
I'll have to get back to you on what card my wifes laptop is using. I think it's a 802.11a/g, but I will confirm. My Powerbook 1.67 has the built in wireless card and to be honest, I have never looked to see what it uses.
We have our D-Link router set up for WPA2.
Neither her or I have had any issues when we have had to connect anywhere to any other wireless network and when I come home, I can connect back to my router automatically since my network is set up on my Powerbook as my 1st network of choice in connecting.
As far as replacing the antenna, I really dont know. It's has 3 antennas on it and I get a great signal, so I never thought about replacing it.
Hope this information is helpful to you!

You can't write to it because it's formatted as NTFS which OS X will read but not write to. If you want to continue using the drive with both a PC and OS X you will need to download and install NTFS-3G so you can then write to it from your Mac. You can get NTFS-3G at:
