RAID isn't a good backup?

Hey everyone,
I keep reading online that RAID is not a good backup solution, but the Pegasus PROMISE is touted as being a great backup system. What gives?

When people say that RAID is not designed as a good backup they are referring to just having Mirrored RAID array inside of your Mac.  If your files get corrupted, they get corrupted on both drives. Since one drive Mirrors the other.
With that said using an external RAID for backups is different. Since you are not relying on the main RAID array that you are working on for backup.

In a roaming network, your "main" router is the device that would require port mapping/forwarding to be configured in order to access the IP camera from the Internet. This router is also the one that would be provide the private IP address for the camera which you will want to be a static one.
So as you described your network, the IP cameras should be getting an IP address or you assigned it a static one and this is the address that you would enter in the Private IP address (or equivalent depending on the router used) field when setting up port mapping.
If you are not able to access this camera from the local network, then this should be troubleshot first.

  • How to restore database if customer has no good backups?

Customer lost database recently and no good backups. Is there a possible way to restore and recover database in this scenario?
    Thanks
    B. Scott

If you have some full database exports, you can reimport it.
If you have an old full backup and all archived redo logs from this full backup, it's possible to restore everything.
Otherwise, I really don't know. But you should give us more info:
do you have partial backup ? which files do you have ? which files are missing ?

  • Good backup strategy for a mailserver?

    Hi,
What would be a good backup strategy for a mailserver and what software would you use. I've got Retrospect right now ...
    Thanks a lot.
    Jerome

Yeah, ptero, I know. I'm using mailbfr and it seems to work quite fine.
I didn't express myself clearly in this thread, I was in fact looking for the best way to backup a whole MacOS X Server whose primary function is being a mailserver.
I'm backing up the mailbfr via Retrospect on another server, and I'm using Carbon Copy Cloner from time to time to make an image of the whole server. But is that a good idea? I've got a neat program on my Windows servers which makes 'continuous' incremental images of the whole disk while the servers are being used. Is there anything like that for Mac? Or how do you back up the system configuration of your Mac servers?
But perhaps this is the wrong subforum to ask questions like this?
    Thanks alot anyway!

For DVD you can't use H.264.  You need MPEG2-DVD.

  • PC crashed b4 good backup of iTunes - how 2 get ipod music back on PC?

Before we could get a good backup of all my son's iTunes music, the hard drive crashed on the PC. The bad sectors are where his music was so we have no way of recovering from the PC. Is there a way to get the music from his iPod color (30gb) from the iPod to iTunes on the rebuilt PC?

Or you can go in (letter of the driver):\iPod_Control\Music. To see the iPod_Control folder, You must have the hidden folders option off. If it is near of what i'm trying to explain, you should see 50 folders From F00 to F49. Copy and paste them in your computer. I did this(using Windows) And it took me about an hour for 2 000 or so songs. Hope it'll help you!

  • Purchase 2013 iMac, choose Flash or Fusion, have a good backup routine.

I'm debating replacing a 2011 iMac with a BTO 2013 iMac, primarily to get the speed of Flash.
My 2011 does not have SSD and I'm not enthusiastic about the various external Thunderbolt SSD devices available.
I don't process video files and I don't play games. The iMac is used for moderate stuff such as Filemaker, EazyDraw, Safari, Word, Excel, iPhoto, iTunes and Amadeus.
I have a good backup routine: Filemaker, SuperDuper and Time Machine all scheduled to three different external drives.
I currently use about 90 gigs (home folder) out of 1TB on the internal drive and 180 gig of photos and music on an external drive.
I figure I can afford either the 3TB fusion drive or 510meg of SSD.
Thus if price doesn't matter and I have a good backup routine, my choice is probably about device long term reliability.
I have a fair understanding how the Fusion works.
Given the above, which would you choose, 3TB fusion or 512GB Flash ?

A bit more to this. In Energy Saver Settings I've unticked the option "Put hard disks to sleep where possible"
This has stopped the problem, but I am surprised that a system setting that was apparently on by default manage to shutdown my iMac so completely it needed an SMC reset every time.

  • Any ideas for a good backup workflow?

Simple question, but I've read a lot of different ideas. I simply want to backup my photos and want to know what the experts are doing.
What's the safest/easiest way to back up photo library? I use Aperture to create a Library vault on a separate external hard drive which is always hooked up to my system. But if my house were to burn down I'd lose everything. So, should I simply set up two vaults on two separate hard drive and rotate them once a month keeping one of them offsite, or should I make a duplicate of the original library and rotate that monthly with an offsite hard drive? What are the experts doing?
    Thanks,
    Brian

One of the nice things about a Mac is that backup is really easy. I'm paranoid, so I:
-- Run Time Machine on a RAID, and,
-- Use SuperDuper! to clone my drives every morning at 0300, and
-- Use CrashPlan to do off site backups of my most essential data.
(When I lived overseas, I cloned everything every month or so and rotated the hard drive out of country.)
I have a managed library, so I do make a vault of that on another drive, but there really isn't much point. It is much better to have a comprehensive, automatic backup of your whole system than to spend time worrying about just your images.

  • Is this a good backup strategy for a drive with Logic projects on it ?

Let's say you build on a LP9 project, that could be editing regions on the arrange window, adding/ deleting plugins, and saving the project under the same name. Those edits are stored in the project file and now the session is different than the one on the backup disk. Is it a good idea to have Carbon Copy Cloner archive the older project into a seperate folder and copy the newly edited version into the same project folder replacing the older version ? Or re-save the edited project (which I do by habit) on the work disk as a new name to reflect that it is a new version and now this new version will be cloned to the backup. But what if you delete digital audio off the work disk either on purpose or accidental, should the backup task also delete that audio from the backup drive or just move it to an archive folder for just in case down the road ? I am trying to design a new scheme where every day when I leave my studio a Macbook pro and my logic work disk goes with me leaving behind the daily incremental backup. Two events are my concern, the first is while away from studio I might edit or add to a logic project and want that work to be automatically backed up when I get back to studio and dock the laptop. Second if the studio burns down while I'm gone, I will have lost no data because the work drive is in my possesion. I think CCC is a good choice to manage my new back up scheme. Anybody have comments or suggestions ? Thanks much appreciated.

One way of making it more robust would be make a copy on DVD or BluRay, as I have read that several professionals do, for long term archiving, but this might be seen as too much of a *** for a small/non-professional catalogue.
Is one of the hard drives in a RAID setup? This would increase the safety factor and mean that it would take a three fold failure for pictures to be lost. Additionally, the use of professional quality hard drives built for a hard life in NASs etc, like the WD Red Pro, would give a meaningful increase in life expectancy over consumer level disks.

  • Software RAID (level 0) with Timemachine Backup

    Hi
I am in the process of ordering a Mac Pro (two 2.26GHz Quad Core, 12GB) and will be using four 1.5TB Seagate Barracuda hard drives. I have read many posts on these discussion pages relating to RAID, etc but can't seem to find an answer to my query.
Is it possible and effective to stripe two drives together and use that as my boot/files and then stripe the other two and use that as a timemachine backup.
Also is Apple's in-built software RAID able to do this and without much strain on the CPU?? The £560 RAID card is not looking to pleasing to my wallet!
Many thanks in advance and apologies if this has been covered elsewhere.

Time Machine does not benefit from anything other than mirror perhaps, and even then, I prefer to have two backups sets as a priority, and only then go with mirror.
I can think of better uses for internal drives than to have two devoted just to TimeMachine.
And "0+1" was 'briefly' tried by many and given up, and not supported post-Tiger, that does have too much overhead and problems - and slow.
Fast boot drive, dedicated scratch, and 3rd drive for media files and data, would be a good start. SSD or 10K VelociRaptor boot drive perhaps.

  • Pegasus RAID Storage with Thunderbolt opinions / backup solutions?

I'm trying to get some opinions about the Pegasus RAID Storage with Thunderbolt
    http://www.promise.com/storage/raid_series.aspx?m=192&region=en-global&rsn1=40&r sn3=47
since I've been researching some info for a friend who is looking for extremely reilable local storage solution for his record label.
Does anyone here use this? If so, do you use it with Time Machine? And also what type of RAID setup did you use?
I was thinking of a RAID 5 setup, since I feel that would be best in the long run should any drives fail, the backed up data would still be available on the other drives even if the performane is a bit slower until the failed drive is replaced. I would like to hear about people's experience with these drives and RAID setups. Also if anyone might want to suggest other disk options, please feel free to mention them here.
This would mostly be for "Setup 1" which is mostly audio production dedicated.
There is also a need for a "Setup 2" which would be mostly business/document dedicated.
Would it be better to get another smaller local back up solution for Setup 2?
We're not too keen on using Time Capsule for Setup 2 as their long term performance does have a great track record.
We're also going to be using Carbonite to have an offsite/remote backup of everything we have locally, but I'm not too familar with their services as well and if anyone here can comment on that I would apprecaite it. I've read up a bit on them and I would think to probably use their Business level service.
Any help, advice, opinions are welcome and appreacaited!
    Thanks!

You can (re-)install to the Pegasus raid and boot from it.
However, you'll actually get a faster system if you use an SSD for the system drive and then just use the Pegasus for data files (and Time Machine backups of the SSD ...).
    In any case:
Be sure to use the Promise Utility (download it from their site) to configure the RAID level etc if you don't want the default RAID 5 configuration.  (For me I prefer RAID 6 if there are more than 4 drives, RAID 1 for 2 drives and RAID 10 for 4 drives – RAID 5 is just too risky; even configured with a spare).
If you use the Pegasus as your system drive, consider using RAID 10 on it.  You'll "only" get 6 TB storage; but it'll be fast and quite safe (much safer than RAID 5).

  • Xserve raid shows power state UPS backup

How do I change the power state from UPS backup to on like the rest of the xserve raids we have? None of the xserve raids we have ever used a UPS so I do not know why this one is showing power state UPS Backup under the information tab of the GUI.
This is annoying since it's causing the circle to be yellow instead of green. Any ideas or suggestions?

Never seen this. Does it help if you temporally disconnect the power cable?

  • Will RAID do me any good?

I'm curious about giving software RAID a try (after learning about RAID in my Operating Systems course),  but I know that the performance increase depends largely on how your hardware is set up.  I have two harddrives.  One is IDE, the other is SATA, which is on a PCI controller card.  I have plenty of space, so I was planning to just use RAID 1 for my root and swap partitions.
Would software RAID give me better performance?

    http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/perf/rai … single.htm
copied from the above page for Raid 0
Random Read Performance: Very good; better if using larger stripe sizes if the controller supports independent reads to different disks in the array.
Random Write Performance: Very good; again, best if using a larger stripe size and a controller supporting independent writes.
Sequential Read Performance: Very good to excellent.
    Sequential Write Performance: Very good.
Recommended Uses: Non-critical data (or data that changes infrequently and is backed up regularly) requiring high speed, particularly write speed, and low cost of implementation. Audio and video streaming and editing; web servers; graphic design; high-end gaming or hobbyist systems; temporary or "scratch" disks on larger machines.

  • Can good backups really 'Unsink the Titanic'?

I have plenty of backups. Time Machine and SuperDuper bootable clones, three of each on three separate external FireWire drives. One drive is connected all the time for Time Machine to Do Its Thing, very clever it is too, haven't had any trouble with it. The other backups are brought up to date once a week. This takes half an hour.
In case of trouble, let's say installation of MacKeeper or similar leaving 'bits' all over the place, will a restore from a backup put things back exactly as they were before? Any disadvantages? Just wondered.
No, nothing awful has happened at the moment.
These Discussions tell me the biggest single mistake people make is unsatisfactory or insufficient or NO backups.

Perhaps obviously, but you can't recover from a backup anything that isn't there - so anything new or changed since your last backup (Time Machine on whatever interval) is not recoverable. Other than that, yes. On the Titanic, we go back in time 20 minutes, we know there is an iceberg, so we alter course.
Hard disk crash? Boot from a clone, then restore from Time Machine and work on the clone 'til you get a new internal, or take a clone out of its carriage and swap it into the internal slot.
Woopsie? (eg MacKeeper) - restore from TM.
Just realised that you wanted those files you just deleted and emptied trash? You're covered.

I want to make one full backup every week
i don't know what files i need to backup. Let take the situation that my machine is down and i need to make a server one more time - install system (win 2003) and oracle 10.2g -
    What next ?
How should I recover now my database?

This question should be posted on the database forums. This is for Oracle Secure Backup product specific questions.
