Raid performance. What do you get?

Hi All,
I'm setting up an XSan using 4 14*500Gigs XRaids + 1 XRaid for the metadata. Before installing XSan I'm testing the speed of the system when it's striped as a raid 0. We're using atto dual 4Gigabyte cards in the computers, together with a QLogic switch. Using 4 Raid5 slices, and striping them togethere as raid 0, I get speeds of about 250 Mbyte/s read, 300 Mbyte/s write using Decklinks speeddisk utility. What speeds do you get?
I've also posted this in the XSan forum, I guess it belongs in both.

Hi Wout,
I have a 180x14 xserve raid with 512mb of cache. I have a PCI-X card and I seem to max out at 185mb/s write and around 235mb's read. This is on a Dual 2ghz G5. BTW performance seems pretty flat going from PCI to PCI-X and upgrading the caches from 128mb. Seems like the speed of the disks and controllers is the determining factor.
I'm experimenting with a 2nd xserve raid and I'll report the performance soon.
Cheers,
Sam

  • If you traded in your mac mini for a windows pc, what would you get?

I have a late 2009 Mac Mini and am just chafing to upgrade. It's slow as molasses.  But at the same time, I'm not willing to pay full price for 2012 model, and Apple is way behind in releasing an update. In fact I'm hearing speculation that Apple may be just discontinuing the Mac Mini.
I don't know... But I'm getting tired of waiting. And getting a different model of Mac doens't work for me, because I want to use my own screens. (I'm running two large screens in "portrait" mode.)
Also, I have a Windows 7 PC at work, and I've come to realize that I don't mind Windows 7 and don't see it as intrinsically better than the Apple OS. In fact Windows & has generally been mariginally more stable, and a lot faster then the OS on my Mac. In fact I got both systems around the same time and the Windows 7 system did better with less RAM and is "aging" better.
HOWEVER, what I really love about the Mac Mini is how QUIET it is. I have it in my bedroom, next to my bed, and it's noise is barely noticeable. So I guess I should look into seeing if there area any desktop PC's that are as quiet.
Have you considered switching back to a PC, and if you did what would you get?

I moved away from Apple in 2007 and have never looked back !
    I use the ASRock Vision X 420D  http://www.asrock.com/nettop/Intel/VisionX%20Series%20(Haswell)/
Its the same size as the current Mini but a bit taller - BUT it is FULLY user upgradeable and about the same price once you make a mini upto the same spec.
I run Windows 8.1 on it and love it - yes there are lots of people bleating on about the 'metro' style of Win 8 but if you configure it (which has been a feature from launch, not a 3rd party hack) you never have to see the metro interface and you have a standard desktop.
As to woodmeister50 comment of : Also, with Win8, many third party add on companies have dropped support etc. is that not the same for Mavericks ?!

  • FCP Crossgrade: just what do you get?

    Hello,
I've got a copy of DVD Studio Pro 4, so I plan to crossgrade to Studio Universal. My question is, EXACTLY what do you get?
Do you get a shrinkwrapped box containing disks and manuals? Do you get a new serial number, or do you use the one that you had with your pre-crossgrade application? Is the new software somehow pre-registered to you (presumably with the information you provide when you send in the crossgrade)? Or is it simply unregistered?
    Thanks!

    Hello,
Actually, I have done several searches, and there's virtually no way any answer from the past few weeks could have answered my question, since the crossgrades only started shipping about a week ago.
I've understood for some time what I needed to send, and what I qualify for, etc. (the leading topics for the past couple of months). What hasn't been clear is just what comes when you get the crossgrade. A poster in this thread has kindly answered one of my question: no hard manuals. If you have any answers regarding the other questions, I'd appreciate them. And, yes, I'll keep searching.
    Thanks.

  • SFML? What do you get when you divide screen width or height by sprite width or height?

I am new to game programming and I am constantly seeing people divide the screens width or height by an in game objects width or height. My question is what does the number that they receive stand for. What exactly do you get when you divide the screens
dimensions by a in game objects dimensions?

You can calculate how small your object have to be drawn from the original , if you zoom your camera (screen) out and vice versa in 2D.  In 3D you will require  to use matrix transformation instead.
    See this example:
    1) Your original designed dimensions
           Screen_width_old  ,  Screen Height_old  ,    Sprite_width_old   ,  Sprite_height_old
    2) After window resizing:
          Screen_width_new  ,  Screen_height_new      (new values)
        Then,  Sprite_height_new=Sprite_height_old * (Screen_height_new / Screen_height_old) ;
       also
        Then,  Sprite_width_new=Sprite_width_old * (Screen_width_new / Screen_width_old) ;

  • Backup of ACS SE 4.2 - what do you get?

If I use the GUI interface to FTP a backup of an ACS SE appliance, what do I get in the backup file? Just the config? Certificates? User database(s)?

Actually the backup should have the certificate too. According to the documentation :
    Components Backed Up
The ACS System Backup feature backs up the ACS user database that is relevant to ACS. The user database backup includes all user information, such as username, password, and other authentication information, including server certificates and the certificate trust list.
If your ACS for Windows logs information to a remote ACS server, both ACS versions must have identical release, build, and patch numbers; or the logging might fail.

  • Mac Mini Performance - What do you do with your Mini?

I have to upgrade to an Intel machine, no two ways about it. My G5 and my PowerBook 17" are both great, but I can't run some software these days.
My finances are limited, but maybe a Mac Mini will hold me over for a year or so. Problem is, how much can I expect from a Mini in terms of performance?
I do mostly graphic design and digital imaging but I also do motion graphics with app's like After Effects and video editing in FCP. I also like to record audio in Logic or Ableton Live.
How does a Mac Mini perform with apps like this? Does anyone use a Mini for motion graphics, video editing or audio recording?
Is a Mac Mini limited to just office applications, email and surfing the web?
I'd like to hear what others are using their machines for, and what kind of performance they are getting.
    Thanks!

I'm in a similar situation, deciding if Mac Mini is enough power.
Current Mac Mini is about the same performance as a low-end MacBook or MacBook Pro from less than a year ago, before they put in the i3 processor chip and faster graphics chip. So it should be quite powerful, although not as fast as the new MacBook or iMac, good for lots of work, if not as speedy.
Here's a benchmark set (MacWorld SpeedMark) that compares various Macs, what's clear is the base iMac is very fast in comparison.
    http://www.macworld.com/article/154660/2010/10/speedmark65results.html
To save cash I'm considering the base Mini, I already have a 22" monitor plus good Logitech mouse. However, if I get seduced by the very sexy Apple wireless mouse and keyboard, plus RAM upgrade to 4 GB, the extra cost makes the base iMac 21.5" look to be a better buy.

  • Internet Content -- what do you get?

I want to buy a Smart TV that I can connect to my home network via LAN, then watch HULU, YouTube, and whatever other content is available. I like the Panasonic Viera X series.
It appears, however, that a lot of internet content is blocked for Smart TV's.
Question:  Am I limited to whatever apps are mentioned on a given TV?  Do I have to buy another device in order to watch more content?  Do I have to pay for additional services?  If the TV doesn't say that it get Hulu Plus, then can I watch Hulu at all?
    Thanks.

Yes. you are limited to whatever content apps are on the TV.
Yes, you can purchase other devices (Roku, Logitech Revue, etc), to get additional content.
Please be aware that licensing for such things is renegotiated at intervals, and may or may not be available in six months.
Yes, you have to pay for additional hardware, and many of the services are also paid services.  The free ones are good for viewing older material; newer programming and movies will only be available on the paid subscription services.
If the TV does not support a service, then you cannot use the TV to view that service, period. You would need a device that does support it.

  • What do you get on the free maps software

when you first buy a nokia n95 8GB which i may do i need to know what you can do with the free gps not the premium. can you locate your possition and track your self to a destination of your choice, is there a postecode search and does it show your possition on a map in real time whilst on the move?

Maps is little more than a digital atlas that will also find you GPS position and a place or point of interest. Any notion of planning a route to that place and navigating that route needs the licence.

  • What do you get in glxgears?

I just installed and overclocked a GeForce FX 5700LE and wanted to compare glxgears numbers to other peoples. I realize that glxgears is far from a great benchmark but it at least lets you know if you have issues with your setup.

And what does the resolution of X has to do with anything? You're supposed to run glxgears at the default screen size (the size it starts with, showing the window completely, i.e. no other windows on top of it).
You will gain more FPS, I would guess the refresh rate and things have something to do with this, much like a game. A lot of things will effect glxgears WM/DM, resolution, refresh rates(??), cpu, depth.

  • ERM SP13: What do you get by doing this?

    Hi all,
We do have SP13 since two weks ago now and we have found the following behaviour in ERM:
If you create a new role in SP13 and once created you search for it, select it (by flagging the checkbox) and click on modify a new screen with the methodoly appears but without showing any data for the role selected. Furthermore, an error message is shown saysn "Action Failed".
If you do the following (search, select it and click on modify) but for a role defined in a previous SP (SP12 in our case), the information is properly shown on screen for the role selected.
I just wanted to share with you this behaviour and see if anyone is "suffering" the same.
Many thanks in advance. Kind regards,
      Imanol

    Imanol,
Please make sure that you have taken care of all the post-installation steps for the upgrade. Most importantly, upload the initial data xml files for SP13.

any got some info on some good earbuds that will sound alot better than the original ones?

trent razor...I just recently bought the best pair of ear buds! Now I don't think they are made specifically for iPod...HOWEVER, they are called McGriffin ear jams (about $20 bucks at best buy) and they fit right over the ear buds that your iPod came with...you should really check them out! It comes with a neat litte carrying case for the 3 different sizes of ear jams..they're some sort of rubber and sticks out so it fits directly into your ear and they are most comfortable...not to mention a lotta bass! te he. hope I helped!
