RAID set and JBOD on same controller card?

I'm planning to update my RAID from the current 4-disc software 0 in my MacPro to a RAID 5 with dedicated controller (for now) and here's what I'm planning (tentatively)
• RAID 5 consisting of 8 discs, 4 inside 5.1 MacPro with MaxUpgrade's kit in use for SAS connectivity , and 4 more discs in a 1U rackmount SAS chassis, possibly OWC's new 'trayless' unit, or another similar chassis.
• Areca RAID controller ARC-1880ix-12 is what I'm leaning towards at this time.
I don't have the cash or demand (yet) for a system in a huge expansion chassis and 24 drives, but my the main thing I want to know, (since I've never had this many discs to play around with before) is when I create an 8 disc RAID 5 Array for storage, can I also connect another external chassis to the controller as a JBOD unit and have those drives therein function independently, with swap capability of single volumes? This would be very handy for individual cleint-drive backups and would free up my eSATA interface for file ingest and more flexibility.
I do know I would have to get an adapter to run more than one external SAS connection cause the Card only has one External SAS port as is. I may go with a different card with more channels for more future expansion, but it will more than likely have more internal ports than external.

your system is on that RAID0?
do you regularly clone your system, for when, (not in case), the RAID0 fails?
Yes, when working I backup the data ideally after every time I add footage to the RAID, if not at least once daily.
have you considered the added security of RAID6 (if your going to have that many drives . . .)
I have, and it will probably be the next step if I go to a RAID larger than 8 discs. IF I do start getting the need for 16+ I may go to a RAID 10.
when you mean storage, do you mean like archival, past projects type storage, or current working projects drive space?
Working projects. Also will look into LTO for archival in the future if the demand necessitates it.
can I also connect another external chassis to the controller as a JBOD unit and have those drives therein function independently, with swap capability of single volumes?
yes
Thank you, this is the main question I had, do you have a specific experience such as this you would share?

you're describing SAS expander. You can easily have more than 200 drives connected.
No I'm describing a PCI plate SFF-8087 to SFF-8088 Adapter, like this one:
http://www.pc-pitstop.com/sascablesadapters/AD8788-4.asp
Like I said, most of the cards I'm looking at have more internal 8087 ports than the external 8088 ports.
what kind of work are you doing? Vidéo, audio? One project at a time, or parallel projects? Alone or with others (colleagues, employees)? The Caldigit system looks nice for large teams of people.
This would be a mobile installation, with me as a single operator handling digital video footage, so this would be direct attached storage, no network interface necessary. Usually one project at a time, but if I get busier hopefully more than one.

  • How do I remove one failing hard drive from raid set and replace with new one

Last Friday apparently one of my raid drives started failing.
As I mentioned on this forum I started getting continous beeping.
I was finally able to get the raid working at a degraded level.  I ordered a replacement hard drive which is arriving today.
(In the meantime I made twice daily backups of my work.....)
Below was the message I got from the browser based raid software:

(See this earlier thread if you wish!)

At one point when I did the checked the browser interface I saw the message Failed and Degraded
As I said, I was able to work over the weekend on the degraded system.
This morning I got the beeping again and did the rescue and now I am running a "full raid" without the notice that one raid was "Free".
In any case, the new hard drive is arriving today.
What steps should I take to incorporate the new drive into the raid system.
    I have one OS drive
and 4 tb raid drives.   One needs to be replaced with the new one that I am getting today.

    Harm,
    Regarding your comment:
Re: How do I remove one failing hard drive from raid set and replace with new one
Please tell me how to read the serial number from an individual drive rather easily, without un-installing them:
If you select the proper drive to change out, you only need to remove one drive and look at its serial number...
Step 1: Identify bad drive serial number using Areca's tools
Step 2: Turn off the computer
Step 3: Remove what you think is the bad drive based on following your numbered cable method, marked hot-swap bays, whatever
Step 4: Verify that the serial number matches the "bad drive" serial number from step 1; if it does great, proceed; if it does not match, go back to step 3
Step 5: Change out the CORRECT drive - that's the bottom line for this whole procedure
    Cheers,
    Jim

  • RAID sets and volumes

I am trying to set up a RAID5 but am having trouble with the volumes.  My RAID set is 5.23TB but my Volume is only 2TB.  I am creating a second volume of 3.23TB. Is there a way to combine the two volumes into one volume of 5.23TB to match the RAID set?

    Use this guide:
    RAID Utility - User Guide
To delete a RAID set or a volume:
1 Open RAID Utility and choose the volume or RAID set in the left column.
2 Click Delete Volume or Delete RAID Set.

  • Why a Apple RAID controller card cannot delete a RAID set?

    Hi,
I just have a problem with my RAID set created with RAID Utility.  My configuration is as follows:
         Mac Pro (early 2009 model) 2 x 2.66GHx Quad-Core, 16GB DDR3 1066Mhz Memory
Apple RAID Card (HW Ver 2.00 and FW Ver E-1.3.20)
1 x 1TB HD (Apple original) in Bay 1 as boot disk configured as Enhanced JBOD
3 x 2TB HD (WD black series RE) in Bay 2 to Bay 4 configured as RAID 5
         Mac OS 10.7.4
The RAID Utility showed the following messages:
Degraded RAID set RS2 - No spare available for rebuild
Degraded RAID set RS2 - No spare available for rebuild
    Degraded RAID set RS2
Drive 3:50014ee20352f5e8 missing - Previous drive status was inuse
Drive 3:50014ee20352f5e8 failure detected - Primary disk port unusable, previous drive status was inuse
    Furthermore, RAID Utility shows:
    1)  Bay 1 (RS1 boot drive):  Assigned, verified, Status good. viable (good)
    2)  Bay 2 (RS2 RAID 5):  Assigned, verified, Status good, viable (degraded)
    3)  Bay 3 (RS2 RAID 5):  Roaming, verified, Status good
    4)  Bay 4 (RS2 RAID 5):  Assigned, verified, Status good, viable (degraded)
It also showed "Severe Events" message:  "Degraded RAID set RS2 - No spare available for rebuild."
I tried to delete the RAID set using Apple RAID Utility but nothing happened.  Can anyone help as I have to rebuild the RAID set from scratch?  Thanks.

    flognoth wrote:
I have swapped the drives in bays and it is always bay 2. I'm coming to the conclusion that either the RAID card is failing in bay 2 or there is a Lion / Mountain Lion issue with the RAID card.
I would say this is not "a Lion / Mountain Lion issue with the RAID card", as I have an "Early 2009 Mac Pro" that is running Snow Leopard (10.6.8), fully patched, that is exhibiting a similar issue, after about 4 years of no such problems.
My RAID configuration is just like yours: 4x 2TB drives, with Bays 1 & 2 as RAID 1 and Bays 3 & 4 also as RAID 1.  I keep losing either Bay 1 or Bay 2 disk, and after reboot typically see it as a good disk, in the green, but now unassigned to a RAID set, and marked as "Roaming".  When I assign it as a spare, so far the RS1 RAID Set begins to rebuild, and things are okay for a short while.
Initially this happened about once a month, starting about 3 months ago, now it is a weekly or several times weekly event.
I've put in new disks (several), restored from a Time Machine backup, and just came in today to find the Bay 2 disk "Roaming".....
I'm going to try a new Mac Pro RAID card, as I have a spare - just looking for information about whether the replacement RAID card will pick up the RAID sets from info cached on the disks (I hope!), or whether I have to newly create the RAID Sets & Volumes, and then re-populate from Time Machine / the old disks.
I will say that I've been running 8  "Early 2008 Mac Pro" computers with RAID cards, each configured as above, and 4 "Early 2009 Mac Pro" computers similarly configured. These were all deployed between late 2008 and the beginning of 2010.  I've had little difficulty with them, and they've been wonderful when an actual disk failure has occurred.  I've had about 6 actual disk failures among all these setups.
    cheers!

  • Boot from Raid-hdd with a controller card installed?

    Hi,
I have a problem. I've just intalled a Windows 2000 my HDD3 (IDE-raid) and everthing went well. I've put the 1st boot option to SCSI and it boots normal. But when I add a hdd to my controller card (Promise Ultra100) it doesn't boot the raid, instead, it tries to boot from the hdd on the controller-card. I've just got this card, and had a KT3-Ultra ARU before. There I could change between "Ultra-0, Ultra-1, Raid-0 and Raid-1 etc. etc." in the bios, where Ultra stands is the Controller card and Raid in the onboard raid. So, why can't I do this on this, newer card? Any1 know how to work around it or how to fix it?
    This is what I have:
    IDE1:
            Master:  Western 180GB
            Slaev:    Maxtor  250GB
    IDE2:
            Master: NEC 1300A
            Slave:  Lite-on-it 40125W
    IDE3 (Raid):
            Master: Maxtor 80GB
            Slave:   Maxtor 80GB
    Controller card IDE4:
            Master: Western 250GB
            Slave:   Western 250GB
    Controller card IDE5:
            Master: Western 200GB
            Slave:   Seagate 30Gb
    Controller card = Promise Ultra100
And yes, I have the modded version of the bios couse I wanted to have a real raid on my IDE-drives. How can it even be raid if it's only one drive? But that doesn't really matter, couse the boot-options are the same as before.

Hi, I did as u said and bought a new controller card (Titan Electronics Inc. Ultra ATA/133 IDE). But it didn't help, it's the same as with the older Promise card.
    This is what happenes:
When I add a hdd to the controller card it finds the hdd and such. Everything works normal untill the os-boot-process begins. Because there is only one alternative called "SCSI" in the bios, where u chose where to boot from it thinks it should boot from the controller card (cause it is a kind of SCSI-card). But I want it to boot from the raided-drivers on the onboard raid (whitch also is a kind of SCSI-card). The thing is that it mixes them up, and only tries to boot from the controller card i've installed, and ignores the raided-drivers. When I had my Kt3 Ultra-aru I could chose between booting from:
    IDE0
    IDE1
    IDE2
    IDE3
    CDRom
    Raid0
    Raid1
(this options only showed up when I had my Promise ULTRA controller installed on it)
    ULTRA0
    ULTRA1
    ULTRA2
    ULTRA3
But with this, newer and more expensive card, I can only chose SCSI in the boot sequnce.
Any idea how to fix that? Maybe to mail to the MSI so they fast can added that choice to the BIOS in an update?
Would be thankfull for any help possible

I have multiple Apple IDs. Is there a way for me to merge them into a single Apple ID?
Apple IDs cannot be merged. You should use your preferred Apple ID from now on, but you can still access your purchased items such as music, movies, or software using your other Apple IDs.

When I was looking through raid utility it says they are all good and viable disks in roaming but no raid sets or volumes are there anymore. • Mac Pro 2009 Raid Set Lost after Hard Reboot

We have a newer Nehalem based Mac Pro with a 2009 Black Apple Hardware Raid card.  The Hard Drive Configuration is: 4 x 2TB Western Digital drives setup as a Raid 1+0 array providing 4TB of space with what we believed to be optimal performance and redundancy.  We had two volumes / partitions configured on the array, one 120GB for the OS and the remaining 3.8TB for data.
Everything was working fine when the server froze up.  ON the Screen an error message said there is a problem with your Raid controller, Please open Apple Raid Utility.. Unfortunatly when we tried to do that we just got a spining beachball. We tried to open finder and it beachballed.  We tried to force quit and nothing working. Finally we were left with no choice but to do a hard restart of the server and turn the machine off and then back on.
When the server came back on it would not boot up.  We were greeting with the Folder with a Queston Mark.  We booted from the Mac 10.6 Snow leopard Server Disk and opened up Apples Raid utility software.  Much to our shock the Raid Set and the two Volumes were not shown in the Utility.  However all 4 of the drives were listed and all being shown as Green light good status, but listed as "Roaming".  We weren't sure what to do, the volumes weren't accesible since they didn't exist, the Raid set wasn't there, there was no way to run something like Data Rescue Recovery software.  We tried calling Apple and have to wait until they open this morning.  After looking online at various forums we came accross this problem with no solutions.  Most of the people with the problems had the older 2006 Blue Raid card, and this appeared to be a common issue amoung others with the older card.  I decided to try and re-create the Raid 1+0 set.  However as soon as I did that I was prompted by Raid Utility that the drives I was selecting to use for the Raid set were already a part of another raid set and using them would delete the data on the set.  I obviously canceled the process. Crazy enough the system knows the drives belong to a Raid set but doesn't realize it should know what the raid set information is.
We were using Mac OS 10.6.7 Snow Leopard Server, and I even tried installing and updating an external drive with 10.6.7 Server and booted from the drive from the machine and try to run Raid Utility.  That did not work either.  Any advice from anyone would be awesome.  I'm worried what Apple is going to say when I do get a hold of them, the system is under Apple Care warranty.  Thanks in advance for anyone's time.

I haven't lost data, but in my 2010 Mac Pro with 2009-vintage Apple RAID card, it has this Really Annoying Habit of constantly losing Disk 3 (the spare) in my 4x2 TB internal RAID5 array whenever I have to do a hard reboot.
I keep having to re-mark the now-"Roaming" drive as a Spare and then wait 8+ hours for it to rebuild the array ... grrr.
I saw an Apple KB article that suggests removing the Roaming disk and re-inserting it.  Duh.  Fat lot of good that did.  Really wish there was some answer to this issue ... hard reboots should NOT cause array disks to go from "Assigned"/good to "Roaming"!

  • Can you move RAID sets around in Xsan?

    Hi All,
My apologies if this is a dumb question--I haven't been able to find this anywhere.
Given a SAN, if I shut it down, physically swap two RAID sets, and fire it back up, will Xsan still see everything just fine, or will I have just ruined my SAN?
Yes, there is a reason we would want to do this.
    Thanks!
    -Josh

    Hi Josh,
There are no dumb questions. I assume you mean you want to (for example) pull all 7 drives from half of 1 XServe-RAID and install them in exactly the same order in another XSR that is connected to the same FC switch? This shouldn't confuse XSAN- all the vital data is stored on the drives and not associated with a particular RAID controller. You cannot, however, remove a RAID set (LUN) from your volume.

  • C200 M2 forgets SW RAID Setting

    Hello Folks,
I'm using the SW Raid feature of an C200 M2 Server. It works well, but if the server is disconnected from power for some hours it "forgets" the SW RAID Setting and boot order in the BIOS, defaults back to Enhanced mode. BIOS and CIMC Firmware are in actual SW state (updated with the
ucs-c200-huu-1.4.2.iso ) Is there any solution for this problem?
    Thanks
    Bernhard Dick

    Hello Padma,
there is no additional controller card, I'm only using the integrated Software RAID, the boot configuration consists only of the Raid volume. And it matches the shown configuration within the CIMC.
I could reproduce it the last three times I had disconnected power for about 10 hours, last switch on after ~6 hours w/o power everything went fine. During the week the system sits in a production environment, I'll go and check if I can reproduce it again with >= 10 hours without power next weekend.
I did the update all selection in the Host Upgrade Utility.
    Regards
    Bernhard
