RAID Slice Failed on my 2tb Lacie Little Big Drive

I was working in FCPX 10.8 on my Macbook Air using my 2tb Lacie Little Big Drive with thunderbolt connection when I got an improper disk removal message pop up. I hadn't removed the cable and the power had been on all of the time. From then on I couldn't get my drive to mount. I was working from this drive that is RAID 0. I have also tried the drive on my imac but no joy either.
I have used disk utility to verify and it says that all seems ok. But when you look at one of the RAID Slices it says Failed.
See attachment:
I have also tried Disk Warrior but it only sees the drive in the hardware section and again says that the drive appears to be functioning normally.
Is there any way of fixing this or will I need to re format. I will lose a fairly important project if this is the case.
Many thanks
Sam

Your LaCie Little Big Drive contains two 1 TB hard drives configured as a Raid 0 striped volume. I believe Raid 0 is the “as shipped” setup. It improves disk performance by splitting the data stream such that each drive only has to process half of the data.
The downside of a Raid 0 setup is that all data will be lost if either of the drives fail. Unfortunately, that appears to be your situation as the Disk Utility screen shot shows that hard drive disk 1s2 has failed. You haven’t found any obvious problems in the troubleshooting you’ve done, so your best bet would probably be to contact LaCie and ask for their help before attempting to reformat the drive. As you know, reformatting will eliminate any possibilty of recovering your important project.
I use a similar LaCie Thunderbolt drive configured as Raid 0 on my iMac. FCPX performance, especially playback, is far superior to my USB 2.0 external drives and somewhat better than my FW800 drive. I copy clips I’m using to the LaCie drive and keep the originals on a separate external drive. I believe this is now referred to as a “managed” library in FCPX 10.1 which, in my opinion, greatly simplifies backup and protection of one’s work.
Good luck and please let us know if you are able to find a solution.

  • Where to buy???  Looking to purchase a LaCie Little Big Drive

    Hey guys,
I recently have concluded I would like to purchase a LaCie Little Big Drive 320G drive to replace the EZQ drive that I bought and now is DOA. My question is however where one can find one of these drives without paying an insane amount. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

I would recommend buying it either on the apple store or directly from LaCie. If you want to save some money, you could try your chances on eBay but it could be risky.

  • Disk Warrior and a Lacie little big drive

    Hi
I have a 5 month old Lacie little big drive which I use for back ups etc. Yesterday I plugged it in and got the message ' The disk you inserted is not readable by this computer'
I have tried to see what the problem is through Disk Warrior. DW takes a couple of hours rebuilding the directory structure and mounts the drive.
The problem I have I cannot do anything with the data/drive as it is locked. I have followed the advice in the DW manual and cannot find how to unlock the drive through DU? HELP!

At the end of the DW process, does DW permit you to review the rebuilt directory structure before committing? If so, DW will mount the disk for you to review. At that point, you should have read access to the disk as if it was a regular local volume.
If you cannot figure out how to fix the problem, you can use that feature to copy off your data. If you have enough room on another disk, you can even make a disk image of the "for review" disk using Disk Utility. After making sure the disk image mounts, you can reformat the drive and restore from the disk image.
I did that once when directory damage was too severe for DW to fix completely. However, it let me use that review feature to get most of my data back.

    Before you have another accident:
Buy a UPS of good quality and sufficient to your needs.
I would have to assume that the drives were connected to a PCI PATA card, hopefully. Otherwise, well RAID and having drives on the same bus (master and slave).
And no backup, none at all...
Get your hands on a G4.
Data Rescue 3 from Prosoft maybe.
If they were SATA and running on PCI SATA controller, very popular and common really in G4s, more options would be open.

  • There is no display on Apple Thunderbolt display, when Daisy chain connect with six LaCie Little Big Disks.

    Hi, Everyone,
I have aquestion with Thunderbolt daisy chan.
I have six LaCie Little Big Disks and Apple Thunderbolt Display to make daisy chan and I got a problem.
I place the Apple Thunderbolt Display at the end of the chain, and six LaCie Little Big Disks infront, and Apple Thunderbolt Display does not show anything.
If I plac the dell u2711 (DP1.1) Display at the end of the chain, and six LaCie Little Big Disks infront , dell u2711(DP1.1) displays.
If I place the Apple Thunderbolt Display at the end of  the chain, and five LaCie Little Big Disks infront. Apple Thunderbolt Displays well.
Is it because the hardware limitation that Thunderbolt daisy chan can only have maximum 6 Thunderbolt deivce?
Apple Thunderbolt Display Should be DP1.2, why it doesn’t display?
My workstation running Windows 7x64 or Windows8.1x64
    Thanks ,Myron

if you reduce the number of disks to 5 and the display works, I think we'll have your answer.

  • Izzy Tutorials Downloads -- Download to my Computer 256 SSD "Internal Drive" on my Mac Mini or to my Lacie Little Big Thunderbolt 512 SSD Dual Raid "External Drive"

I'm starting with a blank slate and zero knowledge.
Both my computer and external hard drive are brand new refurbs.
I bought FCP X from the App  Store and put it on my  internal drive along with Motion and Compressor..
I'm getting the $37 Izzy Tutorials Training Course and probably some others later on.
Should I put them on my Internal or External Drive.
My External has (two) 256 SSD drives built in for 512 total.
    Raid 0 Raid 1
My Internal is 256 SSD Apple
    Thunderbolt connection.
I know my media goes there.
What about this Izzy Series of Download Training Stuff.
    Thanks

    Ok, Thanks
I just clicked the "Download" and it jumped to my Downloads thing at the bottom of my computer screen.
I hooked a Cat 6 Cable from my router to my computer for better service rather than Wifi.
I'm hoping that after it downloads it will give me the choice to "Save" and I can then get it to go to my Lacie.
Hoping it gives me choices as to which of the two 256 drives it has also.
This is all new to me, Thanks

  • LaCie 1TB "Big Drive" vs AEBS USB Port

I just picked up a new LaCie 1 TB "Big Disk" to use as backup storage for my media library. Speed is not a gigantic issue for me as I plan to do the backups unattended at night. The LaCie has a "triple interface" and I have it plugged into my AEBS (firmware 7.1.1) USB 2.0 port. None of my computers on my network, wired or wireless, can "see" the LaCie. The Airport Disk Utility doesn't "see" the disk either. The Airport Extreme utility doesn't "see" the disk but I have disk sharing turned on and have enabled everything that "should" allow the disk to be visible. I've checked the disk out by plugging it into my MacPro using both FW800 and USB2 interfaces. The disk is preformatted with HFS+ and it is immediately recognized. Moreover, disk utility reports it in perfect condition.
I'm stumped. Anything obvious I might be missing. The disk seems fine and I've had no difficulty with my AEBS after initially setting it up. I'm open to other suggestions.

I am afraid it's not due to the USB cable.
I bought a Lacie 2TB BIGGER DISK and had the same problem.
Then I formatted again the disk with 4 partitions in a way to have 4 disks each under 500GB and now it works great!
Obviously I have 4 icons to mount and 4 icons on the desktop, but all of them follow the same settings (i.e. I cannot block the access to just one of them by password).
    Does this help?

  • Fusion Drive vs. Little Big Disc for LR 4

Help me understand which would be better for my workflow, just sticking with the Fusion Drive, or employing the LaCie Little Big Disk.
I shoot around 40 weddings a year, each wedding is around 30GB.
I keep one wedding on my Mac at a time, via LR4. That wedding will stay there until it's finished. But on Saturdays, when I shoot a new wedding, that new wedding temporarily comes into LR for culling and a sneak peek. When I finish the sneak peek for my bride, I save the XMP files and then remove the new wedding from Lightroom.
My plan is to keep my main wedding on the Fusion Drive in Lightroom, and at 30GB, I assume the whole experience will be blazing fast, since the Fusion Drive is offering 400MB/S +
But my question is this : should I keep my other unedited weddings on a LaCie Little Big Disk? Or on the 5400RPM HDD inside the iMac? The LaCie offers read/write times around 200MB/S via Thunderbolt. But apparently that's only true for sequential transfers. Random access is more like 1.5MB/S. From what I understand, this is true of all HDD Raids. If you want fast random reads you simply cannot use an HDD.

I currently have a 27" iMac with 16GB RAM and that is plenty for the work I do. I edit short films (any where between 5 and 45 minutes, music videos, and documentaries (~5-60 minutes). Most of the media is 1080p.
You will be fine for the work you are doing. Just make sure you have at least a 7200 RPM external drive to store your media then some where to back up your media/project. (do not edit with out backups!!)

  • W540 - Lacie Thunderbolt Hard Drive

I have recently purchased a Lenovo W540 which has a thunderbolt port and operating Windows 8.1 Pro. I have plugged in my Lacie – Little Big Disk which I previously purchased and used with my Mac Book Pro with no issue but upon connection I'm getting a "certified error". I am hoping if you can confirm if I can overcome this issue so I can use my thunderbolt drive on my new laptop. I have already tried downloading the driver from the Lacie support website but no luck? Any help or confirmation would be appreciated.

hmm. perhaps the drive was designed to work only on MacOS machines? Seems stupid to limit that, but it doesn't seem like a Lenovo limitation.
Hmm. seems to be a windows/device/BIOS thing.
EDIT: seems that there should be a setting somewhere to change the Thunderbolt firmware permissivity

  • My Lacie 2big 6TB Raid just failed. Help!

    Hi
My Lacie 2Tb Raid just failed and I am looking for any advice on fixing it.
When I turned on my computer, I noticed that my raid didnt pop up. When I opened Disk Utility, it shows that one of the drives have failed. The image is below.
Is there any possible way to fix or recover that drive?
The HD was backed up a week ago, but I am not 100% sure what was added since then.
    Thanks

Call Lacie. If it's not under warranty, do yourself a favor and go buy something else.
I work in IT at a non-profit. We had 4 Lacie 2big units all fail within 12 months, all just out of warranty. They are pure junk. I won't touch them, ever again. One failure is one thing. drives fail. Everything fails eventually. But having 4 of them fail within that short a period of time is just inexcusable.

  • RAID slice or spare?

I'm have a mirrored RAID set. Both drives are setup as a RAID slice. My RAID is working great. Now I would like to add a drive to the RAID that I could take off site. I would like to plug in the 3 drive and have it update. Then when it's done take it off site for a week then bring it back and have it update again. So I've added the 3rd drive to the set. I just don't know if I should make the 3rd drive a RAID slice or a spare. I also already have "RAID mirror autoRebuild" on. Which one will let me eject one of the drive and have the RAID continue with the other 2 drives?
Thanks for any help on this.

If no one knows the answer mybe a good web site that I might find the info.

  • Raid spare or Raid Slice

I have a four disks Sonnet set to configure in RAID 1.
When configuring it, Disk Utility gives me the option
of "Raid spare" or "Raid slice" for each disk.
What is the best option ? Slide or Spare ?

PS : I suppose I'll just have to type RAID 1+0 in the field "RAID Set name".
You can type whatever you want. It's just a label.
why the application RAID utility is unavailable in my iMac ? When I click on the icon, it says "RAID utility is not suppported on this computer".
RAID Utility is for controlling the hardware RAID card in an XServe (or MacPro). Your machine does not have a RAID card, therefore it is not needed.
Everything described here is software-RAID and can be done via Disk Utility (although I'm not sure how you're getting 4 drives in an iMac...

  • Mirrorred RAID Rebuild Failing

    Hello,
I had a mirrored raid setup on 10.6.7, everything was working great for the last month, then today I went into disk utility and it said one drive failed. After checking the drive, there didn't seem to be any problem with its operation, so I can only assume it was a software/communication failure.
Clicking the rebuild button resulted in this error:
Rebuilding RAID set failed with the error:
POSIX reports: The operation couldn't be completed. Operation not permitted.
So I tried removing a disk, that also failed with the same error.
I then erased the failed drive which automatically removes it from the RAID configuration. Now when I try to add it back to the configuration I get the exact same error.
Has any experienced this issue and have any suggestions on how to get RAID back online?
    Thanks in advance!
    Michael

    Thanks for your reply.
Yes, I am sure that the drives are working. I do not know what caused one of the drives to 'fail' as far as disk utility was concerned - but it was online when I checked it again.
I had issues while originally creating the RAID configuration, similar POSIX issues.
I have managed to get the configuration back online using the SoftRAID, but I am unable to create any new RAID configurations or modify existing ones using Disk Utility. Is it possible its an issue with POSIX and the drive USB drivers? Though I have tried with 3 or 4 different brand drives.
SoftRAID allows the drive set to be converted to a Disk Utility set after creating/repairing it - so thats what I have done for now.
I will try to setup/repair this all again once I have Lion installed and see if they fixed it in that version.
Any suggestions on how to get Disk Utility's RAID configuration on a Intel Core 2 Duo Mac Mini would be appreciated. I have filed a bug report with Apple as well. SoftRAID was a suggested alternative to a few other posts on the discussions for similar issues.

  • Failure to access iPhoto after back up / LaCie Little Disk / Error : 10657

    Hello,
I recently bought a 320GB LaCie Little Disk external HD. After backing up via TM I try and access iPhoto via HD and get the message "Error code: 10657. The operation couldn't be completed".
    Can anyone pls help me?

    Hi there,
No, what I mean is when I connect up my external HD back up to MacBook, I cannot access any of my photos and none of my "applications".
again, how are you accessing them? you are NOT supposed to access TM backups in ANY way directly. if you want to use something from a backup you need to restore it using TM interface to your main drive. then use the restored item on the main drive. to restore something from backup you click on TM in the dock, scroll back in time, select what you want to restore and hit "restore".
I'm not sure how you are supposed to view one's backed up photos on external HD, but I've tried via:
    Latest backup/ applications/iPhoto
    and
Latest backup / Library (and iPhoto doesn't even come up in Library)
you are doing it wrong which is why you are getting the error.
I've called Apple technical support but unfort they can't help as I bought MacBook over 90 days ago!
Sorry to be a nuisance - do you think it could be something to do with the security settings?
    Thank you, GF
I also suggest you take a look at Pondini's FAQs at the top of TM forum http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1964018 and at TM 101 http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
