Raid- Understanding "Hot Spare" and Windows reinstall - Final Steps

Hello all,
If you follow couple of my other recent threads here you will see I have a warning of a failing drive in my 4 tb raid (4 x 1TB raid set.)
Also for an unrelated reason I am also needing to reinstall Windows 7.  (and of course my Adobe Master collection CS5)
I ordered a 5th drive to serve as "Hot Spare" and it will be arriving sometime today from Amazon.
I want to make sure I do the above "final steps" properly, in the correct order.
I am basing my "final steps" based on Harm's advice on another thread:
>>>
You can never be too safe with data, but if you follow the hot-spare,  extend raid set and rebuild sequence, it is not necessary. Your data  will be reconsructed automatically. That is the reason you use a  raid3/5.
Your log file is a definite show of a serious  disk problem. Replace it, create a hot-spare, extend your raid set and  rebuild (it should be done automatically) and you are ready to roll
>>>>
(As a precaution I have done a backup of my raid, to an external drive)
So once my new hard drive arrives today from Amazon, I will, in the following order:
1)  Replace failing hard drive.  (Do I need to power down the computer to remove the failing hard drive and replace it with the hot spare?  Or can I leave the computer powered on so that the raid software can continue its CONSISTANCY CHECK while II do all of the steps to rebuild the raid  --- see note at bottom of this post...)
2)  Create hot-spare
3)  Use the Raid controller software (Areca) to EXTEND HOT SPARE
4)  Rebuild raid (it should be done automatically)
THEN, after I confirm that the raid is working okay, I will
5)  Reinstall Windows 7.
THe below step is what I am not entirely clear on:
6)  I assume since the raid has already been rebuilt {before I did the windows 7 reinstall) I can do a very straightforward "reconnect" to the already working raid.  In other words, I would reinstall the Areca raid software (using the Areca cd) and identify the raid and windows 7 will recognize the 4 tb raid as my raid drive.
I am tracking the delivery of my new hard drive and it is at least 5 or 6 hours away from arriving from Amazon.
****  CONSISTANCY NOTE: I the meantime I am having the Areca web based controller software do a CONSISTANCY check of the raid.
It is half way through the check and has found 144 errors so far.   The consistancy check is rather vague about what it is doing.  But can I assume that it is finding the errors and will automatically fix them.
Or do I have to do something to fix the errors once the consistancy check is finished (This is one reason why I would like to avoid powering down during the rebuilding of the raid.)  Or will creating the hot spare, etc interrupt the consistancy check, meaning I must finish the consistancy check completley before rebuilding the raid.
Or should I abort the consistancy check and do that after I reinstall windows.  (If possible I would like to do that so I can get on with the editing of my current project!!)
WHEW!

6.6.5 Check Volume Set
To check a volume set from a RAID set:
(1). Click on the “Check Volume Set” link.
(2). Click on the volume set from the list that you wish to check.
Tick on “Confirm The Operation” and click on the “Submit” button.
Use this option to verify the correctness of the redundant data in
a volume set. For example, in a system with dedicated parity, volume
set check means computing the parity of the data disk drives
and comparing the results to the contents of the dedicated parity
disk drive. The checking percentage can also be viewed by clicking
on “RAID Set Hierarchy” in the main menu.
Directly from the Areca 1600 series Manual. I would let that finish.

  • Hot spare and identifying volumes to drives.

I have a fully populated Xserve RAID with 500GB drives. I set each side up to use 6 of the drives in RAID5. I left one drive to be used as a hot spare for each side. Now, how does that work if a drive from a RAID goes south? Will the controllor automaticly start rebuilding the data on that drive? How does the controller know to use the drive? I haven't touched the drive in the RAID admin at all.
Second question. I have a second Xserve RAID with two 250GB drives on each controller. Not thinking I set up the two drives one each side as RAID0 at the same time. Of course I need to be able to identify which volumes belong to which set of disks. Is there a way to do this with disk utility? I really don't want to have to reformat these things just to identify which is which. Thanks.

    David,
Hot spare use is automatic. Any drive not part of a RAID set is automatially used as a hot spare. So if a drive fails, the RAID set will start being built on the hot spare immediately.
On the second question... how about just disconnecting one of the fibre cables, then you'll know with 100% certainty which one you're formatting. Once you've done that, you can reconnect the second side and format it. Simple, but it will work

  • Can you run RAID 5 + Hot Spare on ix4-200d, or just RAID 5?

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hello trevorsem
The ix4-200d would only be able to do RAID 5.  Hot spare would not be an option.  You could technically use only 3 disks in the RAID 5, but it would not be using the unit to it's best ability.
PX class devices can use hot spares with RAID 1, 5, 6, and 10

  • How could I restore everything in Firefox having new hdd replaced and Windows reinstalled?

Due to some reasons (possibly boot sector problems/virus infection) my laptop (running Windows XP Pro) failed to boot up last week. I've replaced a new hdd and just have Windows reinstalled.
The old hdd is in place and data on it is still accessible.
Version of Firefox was 3.6.4 (continuously upgraded from 3.0 beta 2), with all defaults installed on the old hdd.
Is it possible to restore everything (bookmarks, addons, history, preferences etc) in Firefox on the new hdd by copying files/folders from the old one? And what files/folders in specific?
Thank you so much for help in advance.

I was using another PC to post the question, please disregard the firefox version and plugins information above.

  • Photoshop Windows ... Can't access after crash and Windows reinstall

Well, it was the Great Crash of 2008. I reinstalled Windows, the Wizard disk failed entirely, and Windows created a new "Owner" user profile to replace the one I'd had previously.
I have every shred of my Photoshop 7.0 still on my computer, but I cannot access it at all.
Can anybody help me with this?

    Hi,
For this problem, would you please provide the screenshot for this phenomenon?
To find the reason of this problem, it would be better to use Process Monitor to caputer the process of open the program. When this problem occures, stop monitor, then find the access deny message in Process Monitor. If there is any updates, please let us
    know.

  • Question Regarding Hot Spares and Submirrors

I'm currently running a V210 with mirroring implemented on two disks. Is it possible for a submirror to also be a hot spare? In other words if I have a mirror (d0), can d1 or d2 (each being a submirror of d0) be configured as a hot spare?
    Thanks.

Should you attempt to do that, I'm certain you will find your answer being no.

  • Firefox unstable with Hot Mail and Windows Live Forum pages

In URL (1) below, which is the Windows Live Help Forum, the page loads initially but does not complete loading. The tab heading (above the URL), keeps flickering and the page does not finish loading. Impossible to do any editing or making entries because even scrolling is not possible. The scroll bar cannot be controlled. Either, it cannot be moved or when moved it jumps back to where it was.
In URL (2) below, which is my Hot Mail Inbox, the problem is similar but on a lesser scale. The tab heading (above the URL), is flickering very often which is distracting when typing an email etc. but the page is reasonably stable although it looks like the page is never completely loaded. There are times that the the page stabilizes after a while.
Other internet web pages does not cause any problems.

    Nice link and suggestion Smirnoff.
I assume that toolbar sits in the BTYahoo browser, (don't use it here) which is being phased out I think, so it's unlikely BT tech guys will do anything.
Even if the toolbar is uninstalled the registry remains the same and auto log in to WLM does not work  so "Make Messenger Remember Me" could be a useful tool for those still irritated by this who turn to another browser.

  • Xserve RAID with fibre switch and windows

I have a customer who potentially is looking at an Xserve and RAID using a fibre switch with a couple of G5s with fibre cards for speed. They also have a Windows machine that they need to access files, but speed is not an issue. Will the Windows machine be able to see the RAID if it is shared by OS X Server via ethernet or does it need a fibre card? Thanks in advance for assistance!
      Mac OS X (10.4.3)

You can turn on Windows (SMB) sharing, or you can connect it directly via fibre channel. Note, if you connect it to the fibre, you can't have it access the SAME volume at the SAME time as the Macs are accessing (heck, you can't have the Macs access the SAME volume at the SAME time without software either), without Xsan and the StorNext file system.

  • NB 100 and Windows 7 - Searching step by step guide and drivers

    Hello everybody,
im thinking about to install Windows7 on my nb 100. But I have some question.
    1. How can I install the dvd version of windows 7 on my nb 100. Is this tool from Microsoft the right one?
    http://store.microsoft.com/Help/ISO-Tool
    2. Will the Recovery Cd of Windows will work, after I format the nb 100?
    3. Where can I download the NB100 Windows 7 drivers ?
    4. Is there maybe a step & step guide how to install windows 7 on nb 100?
I would be grateful if you could help me
    Marco

    Hi
    1) You can install Win 7 using an Win 7 DVD or you can purchase an ISO file (image) and could create an bootable DVD or bootable USB flash drive.
The NB100 does not use an internal DVD drive. So if you would like to install Win 7 from DVD then you need to purchase an external USB CD/DVD drive. But you could also create an bootable USB flash drive and could install Win 7 from such external USB flash drive.
    2) Yes, it will function. The recovery disk should set the notebook back to the same state like at the first day of purchase.
    3) I think NB100 has not been created for Win 7 because this is a netbook.
Win 7 would not run fast enough of course you could install it but the Win 7 needs a lot of hardware power and recourses like Vista and I assume NB100 does not supports such devices powerful CPU or GPU.
    4) I doubt such instruction exists. I mean the Win 7 drivers are not available for NB100. So how to make a installation guide without any Win 7 drivers??? But as mentioned above; you can install it using external drive. The Win 7 drivers have to be collected at your own hand.

  • HT201210 im trying to restore my i phone 4s and on the final step it says 'the "iphone" could not be restored. an unknown error occurred (9). ' ANY HELP would be very welcome !

can anyone help me with this restoring problem ?

    Configure your security software
Related errors: 2, 4, 6, 9, 1000, 1611, 9006, 9807, or 9844. Sometimes as a result of this issue, a device might stop responding during the restore process.
Check your security software and settings, which can block ports and prevent connection to Apple servers during update and restore.

  • HT4527 I completed all of the steps to transfer my library from one computer to another through home sharing, but the "Import" button is faded like I cannot use it and it won't let me import and complete the final step. How do I fix this?

    Its in the title.

Nothing in the instructions about transferring via "HomeSharing" states to use the Import button.
Have you actually read the instructions?
What specific step are you having an issue with?
The article from which your question was posted provides details on how to transfer the iTunes library multiple ways, did you try one of the other methods?

  • Improvements in AD and Windows Infrastructure:

    Hello Everyone,
I have taken up a new assignment with a team to manage the entire AD and Wintel operations for the client. Though they have an already existing setup. I have been asked to spend some time and research on the existing network and make it to some standards. I
mean without client saying, to improve the services/infrastructure to a better standards so that it becomes easy to manage and maintain. Easy to identity the issue related to incidents when it occurs.
We have Both Windows 2000, 2003 and 2008 R2 servers and Domain Controllers. DNS is integrated with AD. We have DHCP, Exchange and Office communicator implemented.
I was handling a different technology, though i have good understanding of AD and Windows i would like to get your help as in what are the things i should start focusing on.
What improvements should i go ahead with. Is there a any bench mark or a predefined standard already which should be implemented in a Datacenter?
Request you all to pour in your suggestions/advices.
    Thanks

What you need to implement depends of your requirements.
Simply identify your requirements and then you can identify what to do.
What is sure is that some of your OSs are out of MS support (Windows Server 2000) and you need to upgrade to a higher OS. You need also to be aware about the LifeCycle of your products so you will always be under the support: https://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/search/?wa=wsignin1.0

  • Mirrors & Hot Spares

    Relativley new to Solaris 10.
I have 5 identical disks (75GB) on my system and I have the following setup:
    disk1: /
    disk2: /data
disk1 is mirrored to disk3, disk2 is mirrored to disk4. I managed to get the mirroring done first time, however what I would like to do is have some sort of automated process to have the 5th disk (disk5) substitute in for any other disk that fails.
I guess it is something to do with Hot Spare Pools but I am not sure where to start with it.
I did all the mirroring with command line tools (metainit, metattach, etc...).
If anyone can please point me in the right direction that would be appreciated.

This may seem a silly question but have you checked the Sun online docs at:
    <http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/816-4520/6manpielm?a=view>
which seem to pretty good at describing how to set up the hot spares and then associate them with slices.
    cheers
