Raid unmounts on G5 maybe 10.4.3 update problem

So here is the background :
my g5 runs off a striped raid which has run flawlessly for 2 Months
A week after installing 10.4.3 I had a lock up on the computer
Restart, no joy
Start using OSx disk: raid offline, disks are irrepairable in disk utitlity
Rebuild raid, erase and zero drive, clone my OS back from a copy
System freezes after reboot
Reboot from firewire disk
Rebuild raid
Try to copy across but raid unmounts and goes offline
start from scratch
zap the pram 10 times (to be sure)
set up raid
install 10.4
copy across docs, tunes etc
restart locks up knackered!
So my question is, how do I re set the damage and install a lovely new copy of osx 10.4?
is it 10.4.3 firmware problems even though I have tried to roll back to 10.4?
Any help would be great, I will never upgrade like this again, very bad apple!

Which is why most don't raid, and if they do, it is mirror and they also keep regular backups. Two months and going belly up is rather common. maybe a bad block isn't being mapped out "on the fly" or occurred in the RAID tables.
Have you zeroed the drive or done a 7-way erase? I would start there.
A RAID can help, but so too can having a fast boot drive for OS/Apps and a separate drive for media. A mirror offers stripped reads but writes to both drives - doesn't protect from file corruption, but does protect from a single drive failure.
I would use SoftRAID 3.3 instead, costs $149. Break the RAID and do a 7-way erase. Check the SMART status (10.4.3 now seems to check status on restarts).
Most desktop drives, including SATA, don't get the testing and burn-in needed. You have to do that yourself - or the attention that SCSI gets. I've had few problems in years with SCSI, but regular problems with desktop drives that have half the MTBF.

  • G-raid Unmounts Itself

We are using G-raid drives for our projects. When it comes to the end of the day we shut down the systems using normal finder menu.
When we boot up next the g-raid can't be found - should we unmount before closing down?
Also we are using a Sony J30 connected through firewire and when we unplug this, the g-raid unmounts itself and we can't get it to reappear with out rebooting etc..
The J30 is connected through FW400 and the G-raid connected through FW400 - would it be better to connect the deck through the back of the G-raid drive, at the moment they are both connected direct to the PC. Also is there away of unmounting the J30 without just yanking the lead..
    Thanks in advance
    Cheers
    Rob

Well I am no nearer.. it doesn't make sense..
When I turn I unmount the G-raid properly be ejecting it stops the drive. If I then turn the drive off and on it doesn't remount itself and won't do until I reboot.. And it is doing this on two seperate drives... perhaps these are faulty drives but this is weird

  • X-Serve RAID unmounts on large file copy

    Hi
We are running an X-Serve RAID in a video production environment. The RAID is striped RAID 5 with 1 hot spare on either side and concatenated with Apple Disk Utility as RAID 0 on our G5, to appear as one logical volume.
I have noticed, lately, that large file copies from the RAID will cause it to unmount and the copy to fail.
    In the console, we see:

Following such an ungainly dismount, the only way to get the RAID back online is to reboot the G5 - attempting to mount the volume via Disk Utility doesn't work.
This looks similar to another 'RAID volume unmounts' thread I found elsewhere in the forum - it appeared to have no solution apart from contacting Apple.
    Is this the only recourse?
    G5 2.7 6.5Gb + X-RAID 3.5Tb   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   Decklink Extreme / HD

There should be no need to restart the controllers to get additional reporting -- updating the firmware restarts them.
If blocks are found to be bad during reconditioning, then the data in the blocks should be relocated, and the "bad" blocks mapped out as bad. The Xserve RAID has no idea whatsoever what constitutes a "file," given it doesn't know anything about the OS (you can format the volumes as HFS+, Xsan, ZFS, ext3, ReiserFS, whatever... this is done from the host and the Xserve RAID is completely unaware of this). So if the blocks can be successfully relocated (shouldn't be too hard, given the data can be generated from parity), then you're good to go. If somehow you have bad blocks in multiple locations on multiple spindles that overlap, then that would of course be bad. I'd expect that to be fairly rare though.
One thing I should note is that drives don't last forever. As the RAID ages, the chances of drive failure increase. Typically drive lifespan follows a "bathtub curve," if you imagined looking a a cross-section of a crow's foot tub. Failures will be very high early (due to manufacturing defects -- something testing as "burn in" should catch -- and I believe Apple does this for you), then very low for a while, and then will rise markedly as drives get "old." Where this is would be a subject for debate, but typical data center folks start proactively replacing entire storage systems at some point to avoid the chance of multiple drive failure. The Xserve RAIDs have only been out for 4 years, so I wouldn't anticipate this yet -- but if it were me I'd probably start thinking about doing this after 4 or 5 years. Few experienced IT data center folks would feel comfortable letting spindles run 24x7x365 for 6 years... even if 95% of the time it would be okay.

  • Xserve Raid Unmounts During Playback

We are using our RAID with Final Cut Pro 5. We are trying to layback a 1080i 10bit 23.98 show with 4 audio channels but during playback the Raid often unmounts itself, causing Final Cut to freak out. Normally at this point we have to restart the G5 in order to get the RAID to mount normally again. Sometimes this happens after 20 minutes of playback, sometimes after 40, and last night it was happening after a mere minute or two of playback. Some RAID info: We have about 2.5 TB available which is split between 14 drives (7 on each controller). We are using RAID 5 and there is currently 500 GB of free space. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. If you need more info, let me know what/where to get it and I will post it here. Thanks in advance!

  • External SATA RAID no longer works after 10.5.5 update

After updating to 10.5.5, my external RAID (Sbox) (RAID 10) is no longer recognized – The SATA card is functioning correctly – I can attach a single external SATA drive without problem – all ROM has been updated (working with Sonnet) and we confirmed the proper operation of the card. When the system is attached to the external RAID (with port replicator in enclosure) the card reports an error (both green and amber steady lights) and no activity on the transfer lights. Worked great under 10.5.4 on PowerMac. Any ideas??

It seems as though the problems are multiplying. Other programs are acting funny now - I had to force quit iTunes yesterday and then the Finder froze. Keyboard response was nil, so I couldn't Force quit the Finder, so I had to resort to more drastic measures. It took two reboots to get things running again. I'm going to review some other threads to see if there are any clues there, then probably wipe the hard drive and do a clean install if nothing else seems to address the issue.

  • Some form of virus maybe, that came with update

I am not the most technology savvy person as it is, however, i received a message regarding an available update for my BB Tour. I accepted it, and everything seemed to be fine, until about an hour ago. After every SMS, MMS, and phone call, a seemingly jazz styled singer sings "i ain't gonna___unknown__somebody now" and repeats it twice. I searched my phone thinking maybe a friend was playing a joke, but there is no file containing this song in anything. Someone please help if possible.

  • Long bios load time with gtx970 - maybe need gpu bios update?

I just installed my gtx 970 and it all runs fine.  However I get a very long bios load time on boot up.  Normally it only takes a second or two with a single beep.  With the 970 though I get the single beep and the bios load screen, but it sits at that screen for a long time, then another beep, waiting, eventually another beep, and after some more waiting windows will start to load.
My problem is that now I can also no longer get in to the bios. I have tried even plugging in a ps/2 keyboard to see if maybe that could get me in.  The farthest I get after hitting delete to enter is I just end up at a black screen. My mobo has no onboard gpu output, so its not like its trying to go to a monitor I cant see.
So would any gpu bios updates fix this? I am currently at the latest bios for my board which updated it to a uefi bios.
cpu: i7-2600k (yes Im aware I will only have pcie2)
    mobo: gigabyte z68 d3-b3

Under bios features, is there a option called boot mode select?
Try to switch to "legacy only", save and reboot.
Are you using HDMI connector? Try to use DVI.
    Sorry for my english!
I dont remember seeing any boot mode select.  As far as connections I am using all DVI for my monitors. I have also tried only having a single one connected in case there were issues with multiple monitors

with those old boards, you need ME8 to works with modern cards
    ask gigabyte support about it
Thanks Ill try emailing them.  Is ME8 some other bios? Just never heard of it before
    -edit
After reading up it looks like it was just a revision to allow ivy bridge devices, which happened a long long time ago on a bios update:
Support Intel 3rd generation 22nm E1 stepping CPU (Ivy bridge)
    Improve power on issue
    Update ME / CPU code
Unless theres something else Im missing about ME8

  • Firmware update problem with raid mirrored drives and solution

Note this - the firmware update will not install from a software mirrored boot drive. It will install just fine from a non-mirrored clone. So, make a clone, set it as your boot drive from system preferences, and all is good.

Well this is a pain, this is what I figured I would have to do but c'mon apple, I am sure people are not going want to hassle with making a clone, finding or buying a single drive to install the OS to, boot that drive, install the firmware patch, reboot, make sure it took, tear down the system, swap the soft-RAID set of drives back in etc. etc. etc.
This is another reason why Apple need to take note from the PC world, I know they like to "Think Different" when it comes to things like this but they really need to give access to and write a driver for the supported on-chip hardware RAID controller located in the Motherboards Southbridge chip of THIS motherboard, just like all other woodcrest Xeon based systems running the same intel motherboard chipset!
I am sure this post will get me a long list of flames from the Apple fanboys explaining how what Apple is doing is really better, or telling me that if I want hardware RAID 5 to just go and buy $6000 xServe RAID setup.
Well I better quit typing so I can tear apart my system, find a hard drive to install OSX on.....See you guys in a few hours

  • Trouble loading pages in Safari 1.3.2 (maybe due to a javascript problem?)

    Hi!
I'm wondering if anyone could offer advice on how to fix a problem I'm having with my web browsers. I can't seem to load certain pages (e.g., Amazon.com). The browser loads most of the page, but then gets stuck on the last item and never finishes loading (so the whole page stays blank). I'm having the same problem in Safari, Firefox, and Internet Explorer. I think it may be a javascript problem. When I turn the javascript option off in Safari, I have no trouble loading the pages. Also, when I look at the safari activity monitor while opening those trouble pages, the .js files are the ones that don't load.
Things I've tried include emptying the browser cache, resetting cookies, emptying my java cache in the utilities section, and making sure all of my software is up to date.
Any help or suggestions you could give me would be fantastic. Thank you so much!

  • Why can't touch and drag icons on flash websites? Maybe a possible future update?

Hello, I use Firefox 23 with Adobe Flash Player 11.1 plug in. One of my favorite flash sites to visit is the pokemon and the pokemon global link website. I can't touch and drag in this browser utilizing flash. The icons respond to me selecting them, but I am unable to drag them. It makes it very difficult to utilize these sites. I have no problem doing this in my dolphin browser. I'm a HUGE Firefox fan and I would like to get rid of dolphin browser completely. Is there a way to touch and drag on flash sites? Could this be applied to a future update possibly?

Hi barb, well for one thing the vs of Flash Player is the old one. You need to update to the latest version which is 10.0.42.34.
The first link should be http://www.gourdlamps.com/presentations; that one and the other one work fine for me.
It could be that those two websites have updated to 10.0.42.34.
Here is the Adobe Uninstaller that you download and put on your Desktop http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html
This is the Installer link for IE and you will SAVE this to your Desktop
    http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player_ax.exe
Then go to this thread and follow my instructions, except use the links I gave you. The procedures are the same.
Before you do any of this, take a look at the Uninstall article and the last two NOTES. They are very important when uninstalling IE. The last NOTE: Use the "See Details" If you see the old version of 10.0.32.18 still there, follow those instructions in that NOTE.
Thread: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/561702?tstart=0  (If you have a problem with the link, look for the thread
"NPSWF32.dll error...." on the first page of the Flash forum.)
Also one other difference is after Adobe confirms you have the 10.0.42.34 installed, you would go to the manage add ons
and look for Shockwave Flash Object.....ActiveX Control......Flash10d.ocx ...... make sure that is listed and it is Enabled.
Java: If you have any old Java entries in your Add/Remove, Remove them via the Add/Remove process, wait until the entry no longer appears and when you are finished, Reboot. You can do this and install the Java before Uninstalling & Installing. Link to Java JRE 6 update 18 : http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
If you have any questions, just post back.
    Thanks,

  • Dead 2008 Mac Pro with Soft Raid - Diagnostic Ideas?

I'm starting to run out of ideas how to diagnose and fix my 2008 (March) Mac Pro:  Dual quad-core Xeon, 2.8GHz with a 2TB four-HD soft RAID.
I think it died of a bad or partial or otherwise failed update of Mavericks.  Since Mountain Lion, I think it was, soft RAIDs no longer support Recovery Disk partitions, but I have a Recovery Disk on a USB thumb drive, created on my MacBook Pro running Mavericks.  The MacBook Pro can boot from it, so I'm confident that it was created successfully, but no luck booting from it on the Mac Pro.
Below is what I've tried along with the results I got, pretty much in chronological order.  Any of you have any other ideas?

There's frame-buffer-memory garbage (largely quasi-random noise) at the top of the screen.  The grey Apple logo came up offset to the right of the screen, with the spinning thingie below it.  That spinning thingie (I forget what it's officially called) spins for about the right amount of time where it would start drawing the desktop, but instead it freezes up, and then I start seeing flashing orange stripes on the screen.  The disk keeps cranking for a while.
Powering up in target-disk mode, over Firewire
Works normally, and I in fact successfully backed up the RAID that way to a 2TB USB drive, using the MacBook Pro.
Zapped the PRAM, then normal boot from RAID
The only change was that there is less frame-buffer-memory garbage at the top of the screen, and the Apple logo and spinning thingie is now centered again.  Other than that, the failure to boot happens identically.
Boot with option key down and Recover Disk USB thumb drive in the front USB (on the Mac Pro itself;  no USB hubs intervening).
It boots up showing icons for each of the four disks of the RAID, but does not show the recovery disk.  (Doing the same on the MacBook Pro does show the recovery disk, and I am able to boot from it on the MacBook Pro.)
Booting with C, since I gather that that could also tell it to boot from a USB drive.
It did not boot from the USB drive.
Booting with D, to try to get it to run hardware tests.
No effect;  still fails to boot in the usual way.
While connected to the MacBook Pro in Target-disk mode, running Disk Utility looking for disk problems.
No problems found.  I have a Mavericks version of DiskWarrior on order.  Should be here in a day or two.
I haven't tried any network boots, since I don't know of any network drives to boot from, and I'm not sure if it would do any good anyway.
I really doubt if this would work, but one ... conceptual ... way to replace the OS on the RAID might be to connect the RAID, via target-disk mode, and buy (again) Mavericks (or Yosemite?) from the App Store, and then tell it to install it on the RAID rather than the MacBook Pro itself.  The problem with that, I imagine, would be that after loading it onto the RAID, it would presumably perform an installation appropriate to the MacBook Pro rather than appropriate to the Mac Pro.  So, I'm not desperate enough to try that yet...

Just how did you create the recovery disk on the thumb drive? Maybe it is unique to the laptop.
"but I have a Recovery Disk on a USB thumb drive, created on my MacBook Pro running Mavericks."
If y can download the Mavericks installer on your laptop y can make a Mavericks bootable installer with
