Raid utility - hardrive icon greyed out although drives are ok?

Hello,
I've been trying to create a Raid set (raid 0), and later  are going to create a second raid set (raid zero) to mirror it so  Raid 0+1. We installed a raid card last week In Raid utility the hardrive icon is greyed out. The battery conditioned, apaprently successfully, but has started conditioning again. We  sucessfully created a raid zero set in disk utility  from the two drives, but Raid Utility doesn't recognise them. I haven't done this before so apologies if i misunderstand or explain anything badly. Help greatfully received  : )
Mac Pro 10.6.6

Dedicating four drives to hold data that could be serviced by one will not get you performance or data security. If you seek performance, use a pair of drives to create a Striped RAID, and plan on rolling the files off to another medium at the end of the day or every few days.
Mirrored RAID is NOT Backup. It extends the time-to-repair after a drive failure, and is useful for mission-critical and near-non-stop services. You still need a backup scheme. If you have to do backups anyway, why bother with Mirrored RAID unless you have data that meets the description above?
We  sucessfully created a raid zero set in disk utility  from the two drives, but Raid Utility doesn't recognise them.
You choose one or the other. Either you are using RAID Utility and the RAID card, OR
... you are NOT using the RAID card and using Disk Utility.
The RAID card is useful for RAID schemes where checksums must be computed and checked on-the-fly, such as RAID 5.

When you go to System Preferences > Sound what does it say for Output? Have you had headphones plugged in? Sometimes the headphone jack gets stuck thinking it has something plugged in when there isn't anaything there. SMC also has something to do with Sound:
SMC RESET

Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
Wait 15 seconds.
Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
The 5 second timing is important to a successful reset.

I am not sure but unless the item is not phrased as a question, or does not have question in the Content it doesn not become active. I have seen this several times.  And its always appeared for me when the person was just declaring a statement. and not asking anything.

Please follow the mentioned steps:
1.  Navigate to Library/Application Support/Adobe/OOBE and rename it to OOBE.old

• Facetime icon greyed out in contact list

I am runing 10.10.1 for my iMac and have the latest software on my Iphone 6.  The contact I would like to use FaceTime is in China and uses a iPhone 5.  My computer contact list shows the Facetime icon greyed out.  The same contact in my iphone has no indication of a Facetime option.  I have checked my settings for both messages and FaceTime.  I have used messages to communicate with this person.
Why can I not use FaceTime?
Thanks,
Brad

I would guess that something on your contact's end is the issue - can this person make Facetime calls to anyone?

• How do i find out what drives are present in a particular system

Hi,
How do i find out what drives are available in a particular system either by giving the systems ipaddress or the systems name...

You can't do that. That would be a real security risc.

• Start-up HD icon greyed out then gone!

Hello Fellow Macaholics,
I have this problem on a PowerMac G5 2x2 (OSX 10.4.8) that is been in use about 2 years now... last night I just did the iTunes and Quicktime update.
Today: First the HD icon was greyed out and could not be selected, then it disapeared about 15 minutes later.
Yes I have checked finder preferences over and over. My 2nd hard drive (5 partitions) will mount to the desktop and/or the Finder Sidebar, but not my start-up drive!!!
I have run utilities, and more utilities, and restarted and shut-down and waited and started and = still no HD icon. (I have also started from a back up HD and TechTool eDisk to do this). I ran Disk Utility. I ran Onyx. I ran MacJanitor. No problems were found. I unmounted in Disk Utility and remounted the start-up HD. No change = still missing icon.
Everything seems to operate normally when running from the main start-up HD and I can get to the start-up HD folders (Library, etc) by going to my Home Directory->Users->Macintosh_HD (going up in the finder). One more up and I am at the Apple Computer and thats where the start-up HD does not show, just the 2nd Hard Drive (5) partitions.
Please advise!

Thank You Francine Schwieder (and other responders),
I will save you instuctions should this happen again.
The events I saw were somewhat different in that my start-up HD was greyed-out (or dimmed) and could not be selected before the icon disapeared from the finder (sidebar and desktop).
Francine Schwieder: I have not tried your method yet in that I was off line working on the Hard Drive. Before I did an erase and reinstall, I backed up the current start-up HD (March 7th) via Super Duper to a Firewire Drive partition and low and behold, that partition did not show up in the finder after a restart. It could be selected in the Disk Utility and Startup Disk in System Preferences... and it tested fine and it would start up the PowerMac G5 and all functions seemed OK.
I ended up erasing the start-up HD and reinstalling via Super Duper and a back-up Firewire Drive partition from March 5th (lucky me!). I only needed to bring over a few files and emails from the March 7th back-up partion (Firewire Drive)... yes its icon is still invisable.
What a day or should I say what a night = so shut down computer... sleep (me) and today... drum roll ...,...,...,... all is well (March 8th).
OK, One Exception: I use Overflow app in the Dock and it had some bizare icons which would link to strange system files (both apps and docs) that I never use; so this is a little bit of clean up to do here.
I still have 2 application updates from DVD to install (FM8 and Absyth 4) and 3 updates from Native Instuments (FM8 and Absyth 4 and Kontakt 2) to download and install. Very, Very carefully. Then there are those two Apple Updates that I suspect... errrrr!
Stay tuned...

• Can't partition with disk utility. Options greyed out

Hi,
Bought a used 4 TB Seagate drive, formatted it , checked the speed 150 MB/s read/write and made a partition. Apparently it worked perfect.
However after this first partition the drive is behaving erratically. I can not modify partitions anymore nor delete them. Repair disk is not finding any problem either from the system or from the recovery partition.
I am starting to believe the disk is damaged. Beside the partition problem the disk is behaving fine. Anyone please?

Thanks. I already did. The disk whose partitions I can not modify is blank. It is the 3rd disk in the Mac pro. I formatted and created 2 partitions. But then I can not create more partitions nor delete them. I tried from the Recovery volume with the same result. Partition options remain greyed out.
Beside that, if you look at the pictures, CCC 4TB and CCC 4TB2 are the same physical drive but seem to be different in disk utility. Is this disk damaged?

• Disk Utility - Verify button greyed out.

I'm running 10.4.9 & have everything updated except for the recent Pro App. I wanted to verify my disk before installing this when I noticed that the button was greyed out! I click on my hard drive, I click on my disk & it's still greyed out!
Any ideas?
Thanks!

I never use the Verify Disk feature from my boot volume which can report a problem that doesn't exist when later running Repair Disk via Disk Utility when booted from your install disc.
If a problem is reported when selecting Verify Disk via Disk Utility from your boot volume, you will need to do the repair when booted from your Tiger install disc anyway so best all around to go ahead and do this from the outset, select your language and at the Installer menu bar, navigate to Disk Utility. Select your boot volume in the drives and volumes window which is usually Macintosh HD and under the First Aid tab, select Repair Disk.
Selecting Repair Disk does a Verify first anyway and if a problem is discovered attempts to make the repair so running Verify Disk first or instead of Repair Disk only each time does not gain anything.

• Re: Network icon greyed out in taskbar

For some reason, when if I right-click on the taskbar and select properties - turn system icons on and off -, the network icon is greyed out..
How can I enable it?
What I've tried so far:
- Local Group Policy Editor
- Modify reg file
Details of what I tried:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/19085-system-icons-enable-disable.html

Thank you for these suggestions, JoeLouis.
Before I go any further I would like to mention a few details:
(1) the same issue affects the "notification" icon. It is also greyed out.
(2) Even when I click on "always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar", the network and notification icons do not show up.
(3) I bought the laptop 2 weeks ago and I set the OS back to before the very first software I installed. No difference.
(4) I reinstalled the LAN driver yesterday. No difference
Under "notification area icons" if I "hide icons and notifications" for the network, and then reselect "show icon and notifications" I see the following message: This notification icon is not currently active. It will be shown the next time it become active. Not sure if this is a generic windows message or if it is specific to my problem.
If I apply Microsoft Fix it for system icons (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/945011/en-us) the network and notification icons completely disappear from the "notification area icons" list. This may indicate a registry issue.
Thank you.

• Power Map icon greyed out

I am running Excel 2013 Professional Plus 32 bit on windows 7.
I have installed the add-in for Power Map and it is enabled from the com-add in. My graphics driver is version 10.
I can see and use the Power View icon but Power Map is greyed out.
I checked the registry edit in the Word document intsall instructions but the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\Excel\Addins\ExcelPlugInShell.Connect
ExcelPlugInShell.Connect is not listed in the registry.
I uninstalled the add-in and did an office repair and then re-installed the add-in.
Is there anything else I can do to enable the Power Map add-in?

Is this still an issue?

• "Motion 4" icon greyed out after upgrading to Yosemite - Did Yosemite break "Motion 4" in Final Cut Studio?

Against my better judgement (now that Apple has turned into Microsoft 10 years ago, breaking apps with every OS update, followed by radio silence from Apple, pretending like they didn't do anything), I just upgraded from Mountain Lion to Yosemite and noticed that my Motion 4 icon is now greyed out. Thanks Apple.
I still do the majority of my work in Final Cut Pro 7, with many, many, Motion 4 projects embedded in the timeline (so that I can change them in Motion and have them seamlessly updated in my Final Cut Pro project), including an unfinished feature length documentary on gay and lesbian history from 2000 BC until 1900 AD. Should I just throw the entire film into the rubbish bin? I would presume that Motion 5.1.2 is incompatible with Final Cut 7? So what am I supposed to do now?
1 - Downgrade to Mountain Lion (or heck, why not Snow Leopard?)?
2 - Switch to Adobe Premiere?
3 - All of the above?
Thanks (for nothing, Apple).

After some peacefull time my system crashed completely on Friday!
I installed all from Scratch to make sure its not some old stuff that I carried on during migration.
It's not a problem with the motion files as I deleted all of them and XML export is still crashing!
The situation is, that after installing it all I got the same quicktime translation error again and I am quite angry about how Apple handles clients who are working on projects with the recent FCP story.
Unfortunately due to the problems in exporting XML I am not even able to switch to Adobe Premier as this is the only way to import there.
After a lot of testing I am quite sure, that this issue has to do something with an Apple Update release between June 2011 and now.
Conclusion: Final Cut Studio II is not working correctly anymore as it did before June 2011!!! Apple, Please fix this issue asap.!!!!

• In "Messages", I can no longer use voice commands to enter the message. Mic icon greyed out.

I use the voice recognition (press the mic icon) capability for text messages regularly.  After the last iOS update, it's greyed out and doesn't allow me to use it anymore.
Is there a work around for this?

To use "dictation" as it is called, there are two requirements:
1.  Siri must be turned on (Settings > General > Siri)
2.  You must be connected to the internet.

• Sound Icon Greyed Out - Midi AutoAggDevice auto-created

Whenever I restart my computer or log out/back in, the sound icon in the menu bar is greyed out. When I check the sound preferences in system preferences, it says that the output is: "AutoAggDevice". I gain back control after selecting "Internal Speakers". I have tried setting them as my default, but it always defaults to "AutoAggDevice".
I have gone into the MIDI preferences (Audio Midi Setup) and there are many extra devices, but when I try and remove them, they come right back after a restart. I wouldn't mind if it wasn't affecting my default output, but it is getting really frustrating.
I have also run a repair disk permissions to no avail.
Does anyone know how to permanently delete these auto-created midi devices or at least get the default audio setting to stay as internal speakers?
Thanks.
