RAIDCTL in solaris 10

i've got a X4200 server with 2 x hdd installed. Solaris 10 has been installed and hardware raid 1 has been configured. Is there auto hot syncing of hdds if the secondary hdd fails and being replaced by a new hdd or renewed hdd? I've tried monitoring, it seems there no auto syncing. Is there any tool to help provide such function, eg hot replacement and syncing of hdd??
Leonard

I"m using raidctl for a large (non-boot) disk. Solaris 8. If you rebuild the disks on the fly, do you have to use a command (ie) cfgadm or devfsadm command to unconfigure the devices first? Then do you just pull the device and replace it and the resync starts? Or do you have to break the mirror first?
What happens if updates to files come in while the system is resyncing? I noticed that during reboots the drives resync. Are the updates buffered or lost or overlaid by resync data?
thanks so much

This statement is self explanatory, the firmware patches have an upgrade cycle.
3 Can you explain more about your issues? There are steps to be taken after initially creating a volume with raidctl so Solaris can use them, it is covered in a system Spectrum InfoDoc, did you login to Sunsolve?

• Raidctl - Sun T5240 Solaris 10 Problem

I tried using raidctl earlier today to use my 2 disks in a RAID1 setup and I totally destroyed my OS install. I'm sure I did something funky and it freaked out. No big deal...right?
This is what I was seeing after a reboot.
Quote:
WARNING: /pci@0/pci@0/pci@2/scsi@0/sd@0,0 (sd0):
Corrupt label - bad geometry
Label says 286718976 blocks; Drive says 286607360 blocks
I decided to just reinstall the OS. It let me go through all of the setup stuff and when it wanted to start installing the OS files I got this message.
Quote:
One or more disks are found, but one of the
following problems exists:
Hardware failure
Unformatted disk.
The server then dropped me to a # command line. I ran format command and saw only one disk showing as a volume, which I believe is what I needed to do for RAID1 setup anyway (create a volume). So I ran format selected the volume and format again to wipe the drive and its been formatting for over 4 hours and all i keep seeing is an incrementing number that started at 0/0/0 but it has taken 4 hours to get from 0/0/0 to 23,000ish/0/0. Is this normal? Have I totally destroyed the disks? Should I be doing something else? I have read a ton of posts and I'm pretty lost at this point. I'm going to let the drive format overnight but I'm scared it will still be doing this in the morning or something crazy.
Any help would be great...

Well I think I got it working now, so I will just post what I had to do for anyone else who needs it.
I came in this morning and the server was still scrolling the numbers like I posted above about my format command. It got to like 47000/12/112 and I decided to just power down the server and take my chances. I've never seen those numbers scroll like that on a Solaris format before. I have no clue what the heck that was, but it obviously wasn't formatting since I let it do it's thing for about 18 hours.
Power cycled and it brought me back to -> prompt (which was odd)
start SYS
start /SP/consoleat ok prompt
boot cdrom -sOnce I got to single user mode I checked to see if my drives still said formatted and they did which was good. I then deleted my raid volume.
raidctl -d c1t0d0It said successfully deleted but when I did a format I was expecting to see both disk show up as they normally would but it still said it was in a raid volume (i have on idea why). I just decided to try and create the raid over again...
raidctl -c -r 1 c1t0d0 c1t1d0It said successfully created and when I went in to format it... it was there as it was before. But this time it let me format>type>0 and it also then me format>label>yes before I deleted the raid it wouldn't let me label the drive saying the VTOC was all messed up.
format>type>0
format>label>yesI forgot to check the raid and make sure it said RAID1 and it was sync'd but I got kind of excited it let me label the volume and just rebooted like an moron. I would def check the raid before continuing to make sure its setup the way you want it.
raidctl -l
raidctl -SI then rebooted and started boot cdrom - nowin
rebootat -> prompt
start /SP/consoleat ok
boot cdrom - nowinI went through the entire disk install and it's now installing the files, so I'm assuming it is now working fine if it doesn't I will post what I see.

thank u in advance

Hmm, the V440 is a quite old box as well, so it should work with Solaris 8 7/03 or older.
There are three alternatives as far as i can see:
1: What version of Solaris 8 are you using? If you are using 7/03 or later it should be sufficent if you booted the V440 into singleuser mode (from cd/dvd or network) mounted the disk and ran devfsadm -R on it.
2: If the Solaris 8 would be older than 7/03, you should, as far as i can see, be able to install the flar archives from your jumpstart, and then boot of a Solaris 8 7/03 (or later) cd and run an upgrade from it.
3: Apply the following patches, either to your 880 before you create the image, or to your V440 after installing the flar (you would have to apply the patches from single-user as mentioned inn step 1, it should be possible to add the patches from a jumpstart image using the patchadd -R command).

• Solaris 10 X86 - Hardware RAID - SMC/SVM question...

I have gotten back into Sun Solaris System Administration after a five year hiatus... My skills are a little rusty and some of the tools have changed, so here is are my questions...
I have installed Solaris 10 release 1/06 on a Dell 1850 with an attached PowrVault 220v connected to a Perc 4 Di controller. The RAID is configured via BIOS interface to my liking, Solaris is installed and see's all my partitions which I created during install.
For testing purposes, the servers internal disk is used for the OS, the PowerVault is split into 2 RAID's - one is a mirror, one is a stripe...
The question is; do I manage the RAID using Sun Management Console and the tools OR do I use SMC?
When I launch SMC and go into Enhanced Storage... I do not see any RAID's... If I select "Disks" I do see them, but when I select them, it wants to run "FDISK" on them... now this is OK since they are blank but I want to ensure I am not doing sometinhg I should not be concerned with...
If the PERC controller is controlling the RAID, what do I need SMC for?

You can use SMC for other purposes but it won't help your with RAID.
Sol 10 1/06 has raidctl which handles LSI1030 and LSI1064 RAIDenabled controllers (from raidctl(1M)).
Some of the PERCs (most?) are LSI but I don't know if they are chipsets used by your PoweEdge (I doubt it).
Generally you can break it down like this for x86:
If you are using hardware RAID with Solaris 10 x86 you have to use pre-Solaris (i.e. on the RAID controller) managment or hope that the manufacturer of the device has a Solaris managment agent/interface (good luck).
The only exception to this that I know of is the RAID that comes with V20z, V40z, X4100, X4200.
Otherwise you will want to go with SVM or VxVM and manage RAID within Solaris (software RAID).
SMC etc are only going to show you stuff if SVM is involved and VxVM has its own interface, otherwise the disks are controlled by PERC and just hanging out as far as Solaris is concerned.
Hope this helps.

• Solaris 8 on a v440 where do I get drivers for older solaris version?

I have a db cluster of v880s on Solaris 8. I need to temporarily move the database to a v440. I created a flash archive on the v880s and, of course, it didn't work after installing (got tod error and couldn't boot). I know this is because it is too old a version of Solaris. My question is, can I apply the new drivers to the v880 and then create a new flar image? If so, where do I get the drivers? Also, is there any way to apply the drivers to a system that has been imaged already with a flar from a v880? Can I apply them as a post-install script under jumpstart? Can I somehow boot from cdrom and then apply them? Any information would be greatly appreciated. This is a fairly urgent matter as we have a firm date with movers that can't be changed.

• Installation of solaris 10 on 2 similar sparcs

Hi.
I have 2 t5120 sun enterprise systems. One is complete installed and RAID -1 was configured using hardware raid- raidctl on both systems.
I wanted to know if there is an easy way I can just take out the second disk (disk in right side slot when I am in front of front panel) from installed and running machine and insert into another t5120 in left slot ( I assume that it is going to be primary) and I will get a running OS on second machine without having to install OS again.
Is this doable ?I may be missing some steps , if so please correct me because last time I tried I got following errors :
Quote:

OK, so what are the options if we run the HCL check and come up with some incompatibilities??
I have Solaris 11/06 (from DVD media) installed on a brand new Dell Inspiron 530 (dual boot with XP). After the grub menu appears, and selecting 'Solaris', it takes about 3 minutes to get to a command line. I get a few errors at that time, such as:
file in / differ from the boot archive: /etc/path_to_inst
cannot find /etc/devices/mdi_ib_cache: no such file
I tried running 'svcadm clear system/boot-archive' and it seems to attempt to boot into a graphical CDE, but I just end up with an unintelligible multi-colored display, and need to power off.
I've checked the HCL and found some incompatibilities, but I don't know how to work-around these?
Running the Hardware compatibility test came up with the following:
No Solaris Driver
No Solaris Driver
Communication
Conexant
HSF 56k Data/Fax Modem
No Solaris Driver
No Solaris Driver
Network
Intel Corporation
*82562V-2 10/100 Network Connection*
No Solaris Driver
No Solaris Driver
Multimedia
Intel Corporation
HD Audio Controller
Can I simply disable the Modem and the HD audio in windows XP device manager, then reboot to Solaris, to get around these two (I tried this already)??
For the network card driver incompatibility, there is a Sun doc that says the workaround is to run: update_drv -a -i '"pci8086,1064"' iprb, but when I run this command at the initial Solaris command line, or try to edit any file for that matter, I get the error "read-only file system" Seems I have my hands tied in maintenance mode.
Thanks.

• Solaris 10 and multi-installs of SPS 5.1

Is there a way to install 2 SPS 5.1 Master Servers on the same Solaris 10 global zone?
We tried to use the pkgroot workaround that Sun Professional Services provided for Solaris 8, but Solaris 10 ignored the ksh commands. So, we created a full root zone and installed the 2nd SPS 5.1 Master Server there successfully.
Now, we want to test SPS 6.0, but must first prove it performs at least as well if not better than SPS 5.1. To do that, we must provide monitoring data from the full root zone during checkins and deploys. However, we have just learned that our OVO does not support monitoring Solaris 10 zones.
So, we are back to square one. How to install SPS 5.1 2x on the same Solaris 10 global zone.
Thanks,
Mike

IGNORE ABOVEIt has been fixed, so I do run Hardware RAID-1 with Solaris 10.
But I wonder if there is any way to see disk health from Solaris ? Without entering BIOS each time.
Today when pull a disk out, Solaris does not say anything. This is dangerous. What happen if one disk fails and Solaris does not tell ???
raidctl does not say anything, I dont think it works for my controller (http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/hcl/data/sol/systems/details/806.html)
dmesg and var/adm/messages does not show anything either.
Thank you!

• Solaris possibly preventing RAID BIOS launch

Hello

The initial loading menu quickly switches to the multi-boot menu where you select to boot into Solaris or another OS. I am supposed to press Ctrl-Z, but it just switches to the boot menu without bringing up RAID BIOS. Please let me know if this would be to do with the installed Solaris and its uninstallation would solve it.

• Hardware RAID on V440 - RAIDCTL reports strange size.

Got 4 disks in my system. Solaris installed on disk2. Others not used.
So, did :- raidctl -c c1t2d0 c1t3d0
Now it looks like t3 has disappeared now when I do format (as expected). Output of raidctl is-
bash-3.00# raidctl
Controller: 1
Volume:c1t2d0
Disk: 0.0.0
Disk: 0.1.0
Disk: 0.2.0
Disk: 0.3.0
Controller: 2
However, the strange thing is if I do raidctl -l c1t2do its reporting the volume size as 744Mb
raidctl -l c1t2d0
Volume Size Stripe Status Cache RAID
Sub Size Level
Disk
c1t2d0 744.9M N/A SYNC OFF RAID1
0.2.0 744.9M GOOD
0.3.0 744.9M GOOD
Since both disk are 146Gb I assume the volume size would 146Gb?
Also, since these two disks are now mirrored (or will be when the sync completes), if I get a disk failure what happens?
At the moment boot-disk is set to disk2. Will this still work if say physical disk2 fails but the mirror disk3 is still up? Or would I then need to boot from disk3?
Alternatively, could I remove a faulty disk2, replace disk3 int disk2 slot and still boot disk2?

Hi,
Weather the server is up and running now .
If it is up and running then just change the parameters of boot-disk to disk3.
Why because if suppose the server reboots it will not come up . So do this first .
Before doing this just check weather you have a bootblk in the both disks.
if not just install it
* installboot /usr/platform/`uname -i`/lib/fs/ufs/bootblk <path of the disk3>*
If this has not installed the server will try to come up but will still staying at OK prompt.

• Monitoring RAID with Solaris 10 x86 and Dell PowerEdge 2650 PERC 3/Di

Hello,
I have a PowerEdge 2650 with the PERC 3/Di RAID controller.
The OS installed is Solaris 10 8/07 U4.
Currently RAID is configured through the BIOS and it works fine, but I have no way to monitor the status of the drives.
Is there a command to show me the status of the drives? Drivers I need to install?
TIA,
Chris

I'm just now starting to delve into the X86 servers, and I am not a fan of hardware RAID in general, but on the SPARC side, you would use 'raidctl' to interact with hardware RAID environments.

• Solaris Mgmt Console Can't See Disks

Hi,
I recently installed Sparc Solaris 10 6/06 on a Sun Fire v440. I configured a hardware raid mirror on the built in controller card using raidctl. The two root disks are correctly mirrored and report "OK" when raidctl is issued for a status.
I have two additional disks that I wanted to mirror using SVM.
When I start the Solaris Management Console, I initially get no errors. When I navigate to the Disks section, I get a pop up error window stating:
"Attempt to get a list of all Disks failed with unexpected error: null"
If I click on the OK button on the error dialog, the management console is available but no disks are shown in the usual window.
I googled here and there for an explanation but found nothing.
Does anyone have an idea?

• Solaris 10 colormap hardware support question

Hi -
[Reposting an article that disappeared...]
I am porting an X application from Solaris2.6/Sparc to Solaris 10/x86. The display application requires multiple (hardware) colormaps to correctly display images without "flashing".
Does anyone have a Solaris 10 x86 installation with a PCI (or PMC) graphics card interface that supports more than 1 hardware colormap? The command:
xdpyinfo | grep colormaps
will show you how many maps your hardware supports. I would be grateful to learn of any Solaris 10 x86 PCI (or PMC) graphics hardware that supports at least 2 maps.
Thd following gets a bit more away from a platform question, and into an X question, but:
How does the Xserver determine how many hardware colormaps are available? My X server says that my ATI Radeon 7000 hardware only supports 1 hardware colormap - could it be mistaken/"fibbing" about this capability? Perhaps just 1 colormap is a fallback default and can be changed?
