Rain splashed on back of MBP

I know there are several water damage topics, and I've read a lot of them, but none of them seemed to get at the issue I have.
I have a 15" MBP I purchased in NY in 2011 with the 3-year warranty. About 2 months ago, I moved to India for a 1-year research position and have been using my MBP religiously. Upon arrival, the screen was adjusting its brightness on its own, even after I turned off the auotmatic brightness function. Eventually it would just flash on then off when booting up. There is one Apple certified service center in my town that eventually replaced my screen for free under the warranty.
Last night was the worst rainstorm of the monsoon season. My MBP was facing away from a window that was about 10 feet away and it was about 3 feet off the ground. It was sleeping and the display was about 1/3 the way open. The rain was coming through the window screen so hard that it was spraying water into my home. It was basically raining horizontally because this window has a 5 foot awning over it to prevent rain from entering the house. When I reached my MBP, the back looked liked someone had used a spray bottle as there were beads of water on the back. There were no obvious places where the beads had come together and formed small streams down the back. There did not appear to be water any where else. I immediately got a towel and dried the back and the exhaust opening (there did not appear to be any water in the exhaust). I touched a key on the keyboard and the screen flashed on then immediately off (this was characteristic of how the screen behaved before I needed to replace it). I did a manual shut down and set it up like an inverted V.
I woke up in the morning and turned it on (and according to the previous topics, this was much too early). The screen again flashed on and then off, but the Apple chime came on, and the computer appeared to boot normally: the keyboard lit up, the volume keys were working, the caps lock light could be turned on and off. I did another manual shut down and left it in the sun from the now closed window.
I am now at work frantically trying to figure out ways I can get my MBP back; I need this machine to do my work here. I do not have any tools to open the back to remove the battery or any other parts. I wouldn't trust myself to do it anyway as I have never tinkered with computers before. I have everything backed up on an external hard drive (except for the last 10 days), but my hard drive is formated only for Macs so I can't even access anything on the PCs at my office.
Are my only options to wait a few more days before attempting to restart? Then if that doesn't work, to take it to the service center? Is my prognosis at least opitmistic if the Apple chime came on and the keyboard seemed functional? I have no idea what the repairs would be here in India, but I really can't afford to purchase another $2000 machine!
Thank you in advance!

you said this was BEFORE the rain-----"Upon arrival, the screen was adjusting its brightness on its own"
Now......"when I open the screen, it flashes on then dims down to zero."
Bad GPU on logic board, ....likely failing.

  • How to turn LV "# days-remaining" splash screen back ON?

    Hi all-
This is probably an easy one but I was wondering if anyone knew how to turn that list of available toolkits and associated "# of days remaining" splash screen back ON?  I checked the "do not display at startup" box once but now would like to have that back.  We use a lot of lab laptops with disconnected license files and its helpful to see when I need to request a refreshed file from our licensing admin (she makes them expire yearly).
    Thanks!
      -Ken

    Hi kenbroc,
You can find when your licenses will expire by going to the NI License Manager (Start->All Programs->National Instruments -> License Manager). Once there expand local licenses, expand the version of LabVIEW you are interested in, expand development system, and then select your development system. On the right hand side will be the information pertaining to that install including License File Expiration. This is the recommended way to lookup license information, but if you still want the splash screen I can look more into if it is possible to get that back for you.

  • Any ideas on a 3rd party software to transfer music from ipod back to MBP?

Hi guys, while trying to transfer my music from an extrnal hard drive on to MBP I deleted them all. very silly but hey!
I heard that it is possible to transfer music back from your ipod to Itunes.. These are my own music files and not infringing any copyright issues..Thanks in advance for your help...

For years now I've been using iPod.iTunes available here:
    http://www.crispsofties.com/
It's not the cheapest nor the easiest to use sometimes but does things most others do not, including preserving your ratings, last played, etc. when transfering, doing a good if not perfect job of not duplicating songs already in your library, transfering playlists and smart playlists, and especially working in both directions.
The developer stands behind the program and is very responsive to requests for help or added features. It works with videos and Podcasts, too.

  • Question about backing up MBP

I purchased my MBP back in August of 2009 and it has been virtually flawless since I have bought it. However I have downloaded all kinds of stuff to it and added all kinds of different things to it, I have a pretty large music library and what I would like to do is just back up everything to my external hard drive and wipe the computer clean and start over from scratch.
This is my first Mac and I was curious what the best way to do this would be?  Also is it like Windows where it will take hours upon hours to reformat the hard drive etc... Anyone who could suggest how to do this or provide a link with step by step instructions I would greatly appreciate anyone who could help me out with this!!!!

You should go out and get a new, now very inexpensive, external hard drive. Preferrably Firewire, but USB2 is ok if you need to save some money.
Use OS X built in TimeMachine. If you choose to go this route, here is Apple's instructions for setting up the new TimeMachine disk, backing up, restoring, etc:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
Also, I would highly suggest in addition to Time Machine that you also backup your Home (user) folder to the external disk you already have. This will help save you in case your new drive has any problem at least your data will be safe.

  • Best way to back up MBP to move to Lion?

I have a 13" MBP, low end HDD, purchased in June 2011 and still running Snow Leopard.  I'm going back to school in August and want to upgrade to Lion now so I can upgrade again to Mountain Lion when it comes out.  I have about 8.8 GB of photos in iPhoto and 20 GB of music in iTunes that I'm concerned about.  I remember using Windows PCs and every time I upgraded all my stuff got nuked.  I want to make sure I have backups of my stuff.  It's just the pictures and the music, all my documents are in Google Docs and all programs I've installed were through the Mac App Store so I can redownload if necessary.
I like the idea of the Time Capsule but it's very pricey and I hear it doesn't work right with Verixon FiOS internet which I have at home.
Should I just buy a cheaper portable drive?  Is there a web solution that could work?  I really just want to make a copy of my stuff for now in case the upgrade goes badly.  Down the road I will certainly consider the Time Capsule for auto backups but it's just too pricey right now.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
BTW I am totally in love with Macs and will NEVER go back to PC again.  I don't know what the **** I was thinking all those years.  I am super excited about all the new features coming in Mountain Lion!

You can use Time Machine or a bootable Clone. I suggest a bootable Clone if you're only gonna have one backup device. You can use SuperDuper(costs money) or Carbon Copy Cloner(free). Get yourself a drive equal or larger in size than your current drive. Put it in a powered external enclosure. Prices/instructions here:
    http://www.macsales.com/
If you decide to use Time Machine, the external drive needs to be twice the size of your current drive. Either method will backup your data, the advantage to a clone is that if something happens to your current drive, you pop it in & your back in business in minutes. Ideally, you should do both: Time Machine & Clone.

  • HT3205 Hi, 2011 MBP went on sleep mode and won't turn back on, charger and indicator shows green light, led in front on Trackpad lights on for 2 seconds then back off, MBP won't turn back on, what happened???.

MBP went off and won't turn on again. Charger shows full battery ( green indicator) although I know I was close to low batt befor going off. What happened???

Thank you for your detailed troubleshooting attempts.  Very helpful.  Sorry, I cannot read "logs."  My eyes just glass over on those things.  Hopefully, a knowledgeable user will come along shortly to decipher for you.
I noticed from the pics that your location setting is "untitled."  Have you tried the "Automatic" setting?  Run the diagnostic test?  Results?
    Try the basics first:
Change your router channel number.  Most times this works & is all you have to do.
Disconnect & reconnect your modem.  unplug it for about 10 seconds.  Plug it back in.  Do the same for Apple’s routers.  Wait for everything to reboot.
    System Preferences>Network
    Click the Assist Me button.
In the next window that pops up, click the Diagnostic button & do the necessary.

  • Can't back-up MBP hard drive to external, getting errors

I am trying to back up my hard drive to an external (WD My Passport Essential SE) in Disk Utilities (after booting failed). Was getting error-61 until I changed the external format to Mac OS X compatible. But now I am getting an input/output error.
I'm probably going to need to erase my HD and reinstall Lion, so I HAVE to back-up. I really could use some guidance.

Well, FYI: turns out that it was all due to a bad hard drive (wouldn't mount?). So the HD was replaced, and a valuable lesson was learned: Back-Up before you have a problem! Thanks for your input.

Or use FW drives while you still can. MUCH better performance and since the FW bus has 1.5A available for the peripheral, vs the USB's 0.5A, can handle a wider range of buspowered drives, especially the terabyte monsters.

  • MBP 2011 GPU failure or software problem?

    Hello there,
since Januari 1, 2015 my Macbook Pro 15" (purchased in 2011) is having major problems! How things started:
I was just watching a movie on Netflix, pauzed it, went to the toilet and when I came back my MBP had a black screen. I could hear the fans working (when I pressed my head against the keyboard) but it did not respond to anything. All I could do was a hard reboot.
After reboot I got the Apple logo, but the screen looked not as smooth as before. When I looked closer I saw very thin, horizontal lines (color pink/brown?) across the entire screen. These lines were not perfect. They had a small break in the middle. After the Apple screen I got different results:
    - White/Grey or maybe very pale blue-ish screen -> Does nothing behind this
-----> This is also the most frequent result of a boot
    - Normal blue screen -> Checkered screen -> Back to the blue screen to end with a Kernel Panic screen
Since a few days I can "normally" boot again but it crashes after a while. I don't know what the trigger is. It may be coincidence but it always crashed when I tried to go on the internet or used an application wich used the airport (also used a cable). Maybe important to mention is that this "normal" boot happens after the "checkered" screen mentioned above.
-----> The "crash" in this normal boot happens like this:
    - Total freeze of the MBP
    - Crashes on a black screen (like I had before)
    - Crashes on a dark blue/purple(?) screen -> This is also the most frequent crash after a "normal" boot and happens faster and faster.
Safe boot: Sometimes a normal screen but most of the time a screen with pink, very low resolution bands (vertical) across the screen.
When I tried searching for solutions on the internet I immediately came across this:
    http://www.mbp2011.com/
The screens show exactly what I'm experiencing. The culprit in this case: GPU failure.
BUT, isn't it strange I don't have any glitching (apart from the boot in safe mode, the Apple Logo and the checkered screen) or distortion on my screen, that it sometimes has a clear screen, like nothing is wrong? Unlike many of the people with the GPU failure, I CAN boot the MBP with a normal screen, only it isn't very stable and it is only occasionally.
    Things I've done so far:
    1. Reinstall OS X (10.6.7) from the original installation disc.
    2. I have tried NVRAM and PRAM (cmd+option+P+R), no change.
    3. Verbose-mode (cmd+V). (the last thing I could see was something about the Airport) I did this 2 times. First time it crashed on a black screen after the Verbose-mode. Second time it got stuck on the grey screen.
    4. Single-user Mode (cmd+S). Everything looked fine, no errors on hard disk.
    5. Start in Safe Mode. (Shift). The bar doesn't load until the end but it boots in safe mode, but with the pink bars on the screen
    6. Re-apply of thermal paste on GPU
The programmer at our work has over 30 years of experience with Apple and has never seen something like this. He also doesn't understand why it would be a hardware failure, because the glitches are "symmetrical", it can boot "normally" and he can't find anything wrong with it. He is now looking for something in the software wich may cause the MBP to crash. Could it just be a software problem? As I said before: It could be a coincidence but the crashes (after a "normal" boot) always appeared after trying to connect to the internet, using the internet or using an application that uses the internet (like the App Store -> I was trying to download Yosemite, it crashed around 70% of the download). And in Verbose mode the last line said something about the Airport and then it crashed.
My MBP is a Macbook Pro 15" (bought in July 2011), 2 GHz Intel Core i7, 4 GB 1333 MHz DD3
AMD Radeon HD 6490M, Part nr. MC721FN/A.
I am running Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.8
I spent the last two weeks on the internet to understand that if it is indeed the GPU that is failing, the replacement of the entire Logic Board is necessary, wich is VERY expensive... This cost would be more or less ok for me, but I read about failing after replacement, a LOT. Why would I pay so much money for a repair that only lasts just over 90 days? That is ridiculous!
Sorry for spelling/grammar mistakes, English isn't my first language and really thank you in advance. This MBP is impossible to replace (no money...) so I hope someone can help me.
Ask away if I did not provide any information that is necessary for troubleshooting.

    Anyone?

  • Back up in target mode on time capsule

This may be something that's been answered before, but here goes:
I have this macbook pro from work that has become unstable. It crashes constantly, but I can reach it in target mode using my own old macbook.
I've got a 2tb time capsule in service as wireless router.
There's a cat 6 network cable in the house.
What I want to do is make a backup of as much as possible onto the time capsule and then do a reinstall of snow leopard and lion on the macbook.
Depending on the outcome I want to restore as much as possible to the revived macbook or have my macbook replaced and do the same.
What would be the best way to do this? Is it just a question of 'plug in and follow the wizard' or is there more to it?
    Thanks for taking the time.

    koebeen wrote:

Do you know why?  If the HD is failing, or the file system on it is compromised, you may not be able to do much with it.
If it's not a hardware problem, your best bet will be to try to fix it, rather than take the "nuclear" option first.
What I want to do is make a backup of as much as possible onto the time capsule
I take it you've not been backing the MBP up to the TC?   Do you have any other backups of it?  If so, what?
That can be done, but it's a bit tricky, and Time Machine may not be your best bet.
Since Target disk mode makes the MBP look like an external HD to your MacBook, you should be able to use CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper (or the Restore tab of Disk Utility) to make a "bootable clone" of the "external HD" to an actual external HD.
(In theory, and depending on what version of OSX both Macs are running, you could use Migration Assistant to transfer 3rd-party apps, user accounts and data directly to the MacBook, but since there's some sort of trouble, you'd probably be safer trying to do a one-shot copy to a known good drive.)
then do a reinstall of snow leopard and lion on the macbook.  Depending on the outcome I want to restore as much as possible to the revived macbook
Do you want the MacBook set up exactly like the old MBP?  If so, and if the MBP was running Snow Leopard or earlier, start the MacBook up from the Snow Leoaprd disc, erase the MacBook's internal HD, install Snow Leopard, then use Setup Assistant when it starts up to transfer everything from the external (see Using Setup Assistant on Snow Leopard or Leopard for details).
Make sure everything's there and working right, and backed-up, before upgrading to Lion.
Once this is all done, you can use the Time Capsule for Time Machine backups, and the external HD for "secondary" backups with CCC or SD.
If you really want to use Time Machine, or if the MBP is running Lion, post back.  That will be a bit more complicated.  Incude the version of OSX each Mac is running, too.

  • Is it ok if I charge MBP even battery is 90% ?

I always use ac power when using my MBP late 2011. then if wanna sleep, i will sleep my MBP and disconnect the ac power. when i open back, the battery is below 100% and then i connect back my MBP to continue my work. is it okay for my battery?
sometimes i used until 75% or 45% if i need to go study somewhere. then i connect the ac power when at home to use ac power. its normal right?

it shouldnt cause damage, the below 100% could be from a multitude off problems if the computer is in sleep and not shut-off it is probably proccecess that run regardless of you not using it. ie operating systems procceces that turn it on when you move your mouse. its nothing to be worried about. you cannot overcharge like our friend said before me aswell. most computers have a regulator in them if not in the powercord that keep the currant at a certain voltage. for example a car runs on around 12.5-7 volts depending on the model and is drained at 12.1 or lower you add a current to it at 12.6 and it will recharge but not overcharge. so dont worry about it.

  • TM backup of MBP - can I Restore to Mini?

My MBP has gone for repair. "Everything" was backed up via Time Machine on external HD.
Can I attach that ext. HD to a different computer (MacMini) and access/restore the data on MBP which has gone for repair?

you can use Migration assistant to import all of the user data and apps from the TM backup to the mini. you can also restore individual files/folders. control-clock on TM in the dock and choose "browse other TM disks". this will let you restore individual items. what you shouldn't do as baltwo mentioned is do a full system restore from TM which would wipe your mini and restore the copy of the backed up MBP system onto it. that's bound to give you trouble.

  • MBP 8,1 (10.9.5) freezes approx. 20 minutes after booting.

If I remove one of the two RAM-modules and the MBP runs with only 2GB of RAM, it seems to work, although all processes are much slower. TC backup is not working and when trying to download Mavericks again, the computer freezes again. The freeze-problem does not occur under 10.6, here the MBP works fine. Any suggestions? Am I facing a RAM-module or HDD-problem here? Or something completely different?

Just to clarify the problem: the system only freezes when both 2GB-RAM-modules are installed. If I run the MBP on only 2GBs (no matter, which one), the system does not freeze.

  • How Disable Network Magic Splash Screen?

Can someone please walk me through the steps to disable the Network Magic startup splash screen? I purchased the software a few years back and saw a message how to do it. I did it, and it worked a treat...until a recent glitch on my computer forced a major restore, which brought the splash screen back. Now I (of course) forget how I disabled it in the registry. I know this question is small potatoes compared to the major probs others here are having, but I'm hoping someone'll still give me a bit of help.
    Solved!

Oops, I apologize! You're right...you shouldn't have to repeat yourself.
I'm running Network Magic Version 4.9.8225.0-Pure0 on the Windows XP Home Version SP3.
    Sorry. Hope you can help.

    Hi Chris,
I am responding from Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3 w/ Internet Explorer 7 installed on FAT32 File System.
I just uninstalled and reinstalled Network Magic Version 4.9.8225.0-Pure0
Unfortunately, while this installation is still unactivated, having just reinstalled it, I have not experienced the Network Magic Splash Screen.
My copy is set up for Network Reports as well as starting up at bootup. It has FullAccess going through my McAfee Personal Firewall.
I have seen the Splash Screen you are referring to. It was seen when the Network Magic License Servers were down or Network Magic  was not set up, right after it was installed. You need to set up Network Magic right after you install it, before you reboot. You don't need to activate it right away.
Uninstall Network Magic. Reboot. Reinstall Network Magic while it is connected to the Router and configured it, then reboot.

  • What happened to OpenOffice splash image ?

I've created an OpenOffice splash image and it was elected to be the distro splash... As far as I can see, Arch is using the default OpenOffice splash image.. Is there a reason for this change ?

MartinZ wrote:Yeah, i also miss the Arch-splash screen. I understand that too much customization may difficult maintenance, but we also need some personality... i mean, the kernel has an arch logo, kde menu and so on. So everyone that watches our computer knows we're running Arch and not just a random distribution. Anyway, it would be nice to have the OOo arch splash screen back.
I will be putting together artwork-related packages over the next couple of weeks.  I will include an OOo splash package that contains the logo mentioned above--it will be optional (e.g. not included with the default OOo package.)
