Rain Water Damage

When we had heavy rain in England a few weeks ago, I had to take my iPhone out in order to use maps and find some directions as well as make a call. I put it back in my pocket asap and all seemed fine. However, as the day went on my phone kept going onto the shut down screen asking if I wanted to turn my iPhone off (even though I wasn’t pressing anything). Then later on my lock button stopped working completely and hasn’t worked since – I’ve been getting by with assertive touch.
I can think of no explanation apart from that the rain water must have got in. My phone is still in warranty and (although the circumstances probably won’t matter) it wasn’t even like I dropped it, it was just some rain.
I’ve read differing things about Apple’s policy with water damaged phones and I’m going to make a Genius appointment in the coming days. Is my issue something Apple would replace for free or am I going to have to pay?

You will have to pay. Water damage, no matter the source, is water damage. You can get an out of warranty replacement which is cheaper than buying a new phone.

  • MacBook Pro Retina, left in bag in the rain. Can I check for water damage?

    Hey all,
Today, while my laptop was in its sleeve in my bag, it started to rain quite heavily. My bag was exposed to the rain for maybe 15-25 minutes and the contents of my bag weren't too wet, however I noticed that there was a late patch of water on the corner of my sleeve. My MacBook Pro was in sleep and the lid was closed but after inspecting my MacBook Pro I found water to have been wedged between my mac and my plastic case I have on it on both the top and bottom as well as some on the black hinge connecting the body to the display and very little on the display side itself. My MacBook Pro woke from sleep fine but I switched it off anyway.
After drying drying my laptop and using a hair dryer to dry within the ports and vents in case , it is now currently drying. I don't want to switch it on in case there is water damage and it might short circuit.
My question is, is there a way I can check for water damage and what should I do now before I switch it on?

Did you take off the bottom panel?  If not do so.
Make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar and have them inspect it.  The evaluation will be FREE and they are in the best position to attack the issue.
    Ciao.

  • Charged $299 for water damage, from an occassional rain drop in top charging port

I have been charged $299 for water damage to my motorola Droid. The water is from an occassional rain drop coming in the top charging port. I contend that is a design flaw. Anybody else run into this?

Of course it is a design flaw.  That is why I have a Casio Commando. My first smartphone was a Verizon blackberry and it was the worst for water damage...it got a foggy screen after being through a rainstorm inside a water resistant bicycle handlebar bag.  No phone should suffer damage from casual contact with water, folks.  People are 70% water after all.  You could put some of these in your pocket, go jogging, and ruin the phone...sort of defeats the purpose of the phone don't you think?
Good to see that Verizon was so reasonable about repairing it, don't you think?

Wow that's a lot of corrosion.
This is a full court shot attempt, but here's what I did when my laptop got rained on (granted this is an older secondary MBP so if it failed I had my other one).
    Unplug everything.
    Remove the logic board.
    alcohol (90% +) and a toothbrush
Brush away! focusing on the coroded parts. get the corrosion out.
Clean the goop off the bottom of the case.
There is a SMALL chance that it will work, but that damage looks pretty bad. Was it running while it was wet? More than likely the water get into or underneith the chip set, which is more difficult to clean without knowledge and the right tools. Rossman group seems do a good job at fixing these kinds of things...
However, depending on how old your laptop is it might be more of a better investment in getting a new Macbook (mbair maybe?) then trying to fix it if the toothbrush thing doesn't work. Certainly replacing the logic board itself would fix it but it wouldn't be worth it.

  • Is it possible that my iphone shows water damage, but never seen water?

I recently took my iphone to the apple store because it was freezing and stuff. i come to find out that my phone according to the guys from apple that my phone has water damage, my phone has never seen water. Please help.

For future reference, Apple does make quick judgment calls based on these indicators, but if you refuse their claim, they have to do a more thorough inspection - where they open up the phone and check internal water indicators. The ones in the charging and headphone ports can be triggered by a speck of rain or a humid bathroom, and cannot be used to disqualify you from warranty coverage.
If it has been water damaged, be honest with them - the internal indicators can disqualify warranty coverage, but more often than not if you're open and friendly with them, they'll help you out anyway.

  • Does Apple Care cover unintentional water damage?

Im on vacation in Mexico. I was holding my phone in my hand as most do so and earlier that day it had rained. I was walking near the pool to go back to my hotel room when i slipped and landed in the pool with my phone, My legs are all bruised and scratched and i almost needed stitches. I have apple care but will it cover my water damaged phone?

AppleCare does not cover liquid damage which would mean you get a replacement as an out of warranty service for a fee. If you have AppleCare+ then you can use one of your 2 incidents to get a replacement for $49.

  • Battery/water damage

About a year ago i dropped my iphone 4 in the bath. I put it on the radiator over night and it was working fine up until about 5 or 6 months ago. The battery started draingin really quickly. Last week i woke up to find my phone was off which i found wierd as it had been on charge all night. Even though it was on charge it wouldnt switch on. I thought my phone had completely gone and put it down to when i dropped it in the bath. However i plugged it into my coputer at work using the usb and eventually it came on saying battery was 100%. If i take it off charge and use it it will ususally go off again within minutes but once plugged in again will come on and say 100%. Sometimes it will take hours to come on when plugged in other times just a few minutes. It is never on in the morning when its been on charge all night but will eventually come on once iv been messing about plugging it into different plugs etc. Anyway my question is, is this down to water damage? if i buy a new battery will this sort the problem or is my phone completely gone? it works fine when it actually comes on!

The computer has battery-charging circuitry which could have been damaged by the rain.  Too, I suggest that you carefully use a small hair dryer to assure that the battery cavity - and the nearby areas - are thoroughly dry.

  • Ipod Classic Blue "X" warning - Water Damage?

Hi, I think me Ipod is water damaged, it was raining/snowing and my coat must have been damp. I went to the apple support page for it (160 GB Classic) and there is information for a Red "X" which is apparently to do with dropping it, just wanted to ask what should I do, I've let it dry and tried plugging it in to my computer and it doesn't connect to Windows.

It may not be completely dry, do not put it back on top of the iMac (too much heat), find a cool, dry place, like a cupboard, and leave it there for 3 or 4 days, then try it again. The battery charge is probably going to be depleted by that time, connect it to power, let it charge for at least 30 minutes, then Reset it. You may have to try the Reset several times. When it revives try the hold switch.
If that does not work you will probably need to get your iPod repaired at a 3rd party repair site or buy the part and do it yourself.

  • 5800 water damage?

Yeah.. Rainy day here today, and of course i used my 5800 in the rain. I saw the keypad lights are off, no matter how many times i lock and open. I tried to restart, but after turning off, nothing happens. Now it booted up again, but now all the keypad lights are on, XpressMusic light etc even if i lock it. Reboot again, now they worked normal few times but then they turned off again, then reboot and again lights are all time on. Now it wont boot up again.. Did my 5800 get water damage.. Should i try to leave it without battery for sometime to dry it?
Sometimes it boots up and sometimes not. Too bad there is no Nokia Care Center near my place, can i take it to an shop which sells electronics, phones computers etc, can they send my phone for Nokia and fix it if i pay for it? Too bad i cant disassemble it since one screw which has become a bad screw even i use T6 screwdriver, i cant get the phone open because of this one screw.. Should it dry even if it is in case?

Thanks, Live Chat said and gave me information how i can send it for repair. I probably send it to repair, it wont boot up anymore... :/ I send it to repair instead of buying a other phone, 5800 will always be my favourite phone =)
E: Now it booted up again, the light problem came back, works for while and then they keep off until reboot. Just weird that now the screen has 2 black stripes beneath the screen.
I think i will leave it under radiator to warm up, maybe it starts working... Fingers crossed so my poor 45e 5800 would work again..

  • IPhone 3Gs silent switch (Probable water damage)

    Hi there,
After it spent about 20 minutes in a less-than-waterproof pocket during some heavy rain, I've been having problems with my iPhone. The silent switch seems to not work properly, I can turn it on to silent alright, and it'll happily stay there. But if I want to flick the switch back to "ring" mode, then the switch works fine, but it doesn't change mode. Sometimes I will see the bell show up on the screen, and it'll stay on ring mode for a few minutes, but then it'll put itself back onto silent mode. Also, if the switch isn't on silent mode then it will sometimes spend up to 10 minutes at a time constantly switching between silent and ring mode. As it vibrates each time it does this, it is getting annoying. Especially as it does this during the night if I forget to put it on silent, and this wakes me up!
I accept the fact that it was most likely the water damage that did this, but is there a way I can fix it? I've had friends who have put their iPhones through much worse treatment and they've come out of it alright. I have also tried doing a full factory reset, but this didn't help.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

If I were you I would bring it into an Apple store and have them take a look at it.
Make sure you make a Genius appointment before you go in.

  • Water damaged Queries

I kept my laptop by he window side from which splashes of rain water had trickled inside the track pad .
Without knowing this i restarted my laptop by the morning of next day and i saw my screen with blue & black
squiggles and the system started producing beep sound, so i switched it off by pressing the power button .
even after two days of drying, if i switch on the machine ,fans runs inside & the beep sound is produced
continuously along with the sleep light indicator, the screen appears dead , no response.
Can anyone figure out what possibly could be the damage for the machine ?
i have these doubts specifically - whether my logic board is failed ? display failed ?
which all parts should i replace by myself to make it working ?
Data loss is not a problem
    thank in advance
    Plz reply

Sorry, nobody here can possible troubleshoot this from forum posts.
You should take it in to Apple or an Apple Authorized repair facitlity and have it evaluated.  Apple will check it out for free and give you an estimate of repairs so you can then decide whether to repair it or replace it.
Water and water-caused electrical shorts can do severe damage, so be prepared that it may be very expensive to fix.

  • Ipod Video 5generation possible water damage.. PLEASE HELP

    Hello Apple Support discussion boards.
I have an ipod video 5generation from back in 2007, and it is in PERFECT condition looks wise. I maybe used it for 2 weeks before I left it behind my friends shed on a trailer. I didn't know I had at the time. I thought it had gotten stolen. My friend found it 3 days later and it didn't turn on. He said that it had possibly rained for 10 minutes or so in the past 3 days, and gave it back. He was right, no charge would bring this baby back to life. BUT!! it is now 2011, and about 4 years later I find it in an old desk drawer!!! I have never been more confident to bring this ancient (apple wise) brick to life, and I've made progress! Now when I plug into power, a White screen comes on for about 5 seconds, then vanishes for the next 5 minutes. Then it repeats. Every 5 Minutes, White light for 5 seconds, then off. Like its trying to turn on, but just can't do it. Its been plugged in for about 2 hours now doing this. I've seen iFixit steps and all of that "take your ipod apart and let it dry and hope for the best", but its been "drying" (if it was water damaged) for the past 4 years!!!! PLEASE HELP ME! I have a macbook pro from 2010, and it won't show up in itunes or disk utility. Nothing, No response! I want some suggestions before I just say oh well and do open heart surgery on this sad ipod. I know I can rev

  • What are signs of water damage to macbook pro?

Man this is embarassing... the one day I decide to open my window is the one day there's torrential rain here haha good thing my mb pro was generally out of direct contact with the incoming rain
Question is, I came home and there were signs of very very VERY little water on my desk and around my mb pro, probably around a couple of drops but you could tell it was from the rain and may have entered through the screen window behind it. There were a couple of drops next to my mb pro, and when I opened it, the screen had very very little water on it, just on the outer edges of the screen and near the trackpad, but I want to know if this water entered in any way. The computer works perfectly fine so far, I used disk utility to verify the disk and it says everything is good.
are there any other checks I can do to see if water touched it at all, because I have my doubts that the rain actually came into contact and it may just be humidity, but I would still like to know if in the future potential unseen damage from now will affect it later.
And I know water damage voids my warranty. I just want to know if there are any signs that it's even received water damage?
         -charges fine
         -screen's fine
-everything runs as smooth as before
-no signs that I can think of that mb pro suffered water damage

    Liquid Spill
If you believe you’ve spilled anything (water, soda, trendy energy drink, etc.) on your Apple notebook, shut it down immediately, lest you continue short-circuiting your computer and thus blasting small holes through its components. Just because your computer works for a while after you’ve spilled liquid on it doesn’t mean you’re in the clear. Damage from liquid spills start out small and difficult to diagnose, and then over time spreads to become larger functional issues.
The best thing to do in this case is to take your Mac to an Apple-authorized service center.  Diagnostic testing is FREE!  But if you are feeling handy and are OK with voiding your AppleCare warranty (AppleCare does not cover accidental damage), you can clean your computer yourself. Unplug it, open it up, and disconnect the battery and all connections to the logic board. Then sit the open computer by a fan while gently scrubbing all sections of the logic board with cotton swabs and isopropyl alcohol. Clean both the top and bottom of the logic board if possible, then let the exposed MacBook dry in the path of the fan overnight before piecing everything back together and turning the computer back on. With any luck, the crisis will be over.  http://www.macworld.com/article/2030013/advice-from-an-apple-tech-three-common-m ac-fixes.html

My 1-year ipod nano locked up and would not start overnight. The on/off button will not work and stopped holding charge. No water damage, no fall, nothing unusual. I restored it (twice) but it will still not hold charge and on/off does not work. I tried to restore it again and charged it in three different locations with different cables. etc but nothing. Suggestions?

    - After charging for 1/2 hour or so, does iTunes see the iPod?  If yes, restore the iPod from backup.
    - If no, se if placing the iPod in recovery mode will make it visible so you can restore the iPod.  For recovery mode see:
