Rainbow ball and replying to mail

Some of the messages I receive on the laptop I want to answer. I use the reply button and when I do the rainbow ball is spinning and I have to force quit to get back to mail. Does any one know the answer? It affects my Mac Pro Laptop many times, it doesn't seem to be the same on my G4 tower any suggestions greatly appreciated.
Roger

It's not a functional "fix" at this point so much as on the checklist of items in the process of variable elimination.
I built a "flattened" mac, that is on a clean empty hard-drive, I built a system from scratch using the 10.4 dvd, then did the necessary software updates to bring it up to date, and NOTHING ELSE, no third party software, nothing. I checked and verified the filesystem integrity and permissions via diskutils (the command line equivalent of the disk utility) from the console (>console in the login window) as root. (yes I enabled root.)
I then made a complete bootable mirror copy of the drive in it's "pristine" condition using the ASR tools (another command line tool set provided by apple that us command-line junkies love).
I also archived the the mail.app in it's pristine condition.
I then configured the mail client to work with my home account. And then made another archive, just of the the ~/Library/Mail and ~/Library/preferences directories, so that I could later compare them to their counterparts when things went south.
I then started using the account and mail.app, "heavily". And within a few days it started acting funky. I then started doing some comparisons about the state of the files in the "pristine" archive and the "sustpect" installed system, didn't see a connection. Did some tracing of the I/O of mail.app, to figure out what it was doing and why, and that led me to compare specifically the signatures and rules settings before and after, and amoung the text files I saw no difference, and I didn't compare the .webarchive files that mail.app uses for storing signatures.
So I archived the "suspect" directories (mentioned above) and replaced them with the "pristine" versions, and things worked swell again.
So now I am in the process of narrowing down what specific files are susepct of causing the problems and hopefully how and why they become problematic. When I do, I will post my results here. I am doing this as time and inclination is availible, and that time is limited. I hope to have a functional solution for at least my self by the end of the week (PDT) even if that "functional" solution is to not use the signatures or rules or junkmail facilities or something like that may work for me. I would rather have a functionally restricted, but reliable mail.app, than have to deal with a lessor client at this point.
So the three things I would first yank (just move to a safe place, don't destroy) from your ~/Library/Mail/ directory if you are having similar problems are ~/Library/Mail/Signatures/ and ~/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist and ~/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist.backup and reconstruct those settings in the mail app, by hand. If the problems go away...
Just stop the application, and move those files, and then move the replacements in, and relaunch the mail application. If you don't have "pristine" replacements, you will need to construct and archive copies of them first using the process mentioned above.
I have eliminated the DefaultCounts, and Envelope Index files as sources of the problems I am (personally) experienceing, that's not to say they aren't the problem in your case, both can become corrupted, and I have reports that some users within my circle of awareness find that mail.app reliability issues that were cured by removing those files and letting the app rebuild them fresh on occasion.

  • Set-up custom font, font size, and color for writing new and reply e-mails in Thunderbird

I know that I can select the font, size, and color for writing each new and reply e-mails in Thunderbird, but I don't want to have to do this each time. I want to set-up the default font, size, and color for all new and reply e-mails. It already comes up with a default one, but I want to change it, but can't figure out how to do this. I'm sure it is quite simple, but I don't know how to do this. Thank you in advance for help.

Tools > Options > Display > Formatting tab
    Default font: select font
    Select size : eg; 14
Click on 'Advanced' button and set all the sizes to 14
Select : 'allow messages to use other fonts'
    click on OK
    Click on 'Composition'
    Under the 'General' tab
Suggest you set HTML font to 'Variable width' and Size : 'Medium'
Select the 'Text colour' you would like to compose email using
Select the 'Background colour' you would like to use when composing emails.
click on OK to save all changes.
This will set the display email list to the selected font.
It will allow received emails to use the font the sender used.
When you compose an email it will also use the same font settings.
The message 'Display' settings in the above section also apply to messages that you compose. The settings are not sent, so they do not affect how your messages appear to recipients.
The settings in the ''Composition' section can affect how messages are sent. If you make unusual choices, then people who receive messages from you might find them difficult or impossible to read. Hence, why I suggest you leave it as 'Variable width' and allow the 'Display' settings to set the default used for composing emails.

  • When I receive and answer e-mail, the correspondence is usually "nested" with the original message, and the number of replies, etc. are indicated with a number next to the original message.  How can I change the mail settings so that every reply is listed

When I receive and answer e-mail, the correspondence is usually "nested" "behind"  the original message, and the number of replies, etc. are indicated with a number next to the original message in the inbox.  How can I change the mail settings so that every reply is listed individually in the inbox instead of having them "stacked" behind the original message.  I'm afraid I might accidentially overlook messages the way they are handled now.

Somebody here will correct me if I'm wrong, but what you have to do is go into Settings, Mail/Contacts/Calendars and under Mail, turn off "Organize by Thread".  I think that will make each message show individually.

Detailed? Not necessary. You have to create a new message and send it, that's all. Note that the Message has a reply() method that helps you to do that.

Have new imac 2.5 mid 2011 OS X and macmail has a few times started to lag.....slow to accept writing and the rainbow spins and seems to stop it. have to shut down to get it back to normal. Very frustrating when in the middle of a message. Any ideas whats wrong ....whats happening...how to fix...Also a sender rang me to see if I forwarded their email on, and said that particular email had been opened 140 times.......I did not send on....any ideas about that one also.

Rhonda you Force Quit and app by click the Apple symbol in the upper left and selecting Force Quit... and then select the app that isn't responding and Force Quit it.
I'm not sure what is wrong with your Mail system but I'd recommend starting over with it. You can find out how in Mail Setup, Troubleshooting etc... If you still have trouble then contact AppleCare,  you have 90 days of free phone service with AppleCare......why not use it?

My Mac book Pro is running very slow and the rainbow ball is appearing all the time. Any suggestions for clean up?? I have the OS X Lion system.

As well as what a brody asked :
    - do you need more RAM? (run Activity Monitor and see how much free RAM - green - is available)
    - do you Restart fairly regularly, e.g. at least once a week, to clear out any swap or temporary files?
    - do  you need to do maintenance, e.g. clearing out caches and unused logs, etc?

  • Pro book is acting strange..rainbow ball under cursor sticks and a bar code takes over ....have to force close

My pro book is actn strange......the cursor and rainbow ball sticks on screens and a bar code takes over...everything freezes and I have to force close but it seems to be happening more frequently and getting worse......can anyone help please..getting really worried

What do you mean by "a bar code takes over?"  If your cursor is degenerating into something that looks like a bar code, you have very serious problems.  Possibly hardware problems.  Try running Apple Hardware Test.  If that comes up with problems, contact Apple for service.  If not, it doesn't necessarily mean there aren't any hardware issues, but you'll need to move on to other possible cures.  Test in safe mode (hold down the shift key at startup) and in a different user account and report the results here.  If you continue having problems in both those situations, try reinstalling the system.

  • ICloud mail is down again...mine allows mail to open, then when trying to address an email I get a beach ball and it stays until I quit mail.  Anyone experiencing this and what is apple doing about this?

I like many have been experiencing mail problems since I migrated to iCloud.  Was working fine for a bit, then I now either get crashes or a revolving beachball when I attempt to type an email address.  Have tried quitting and rebooting...you name it.  What is Apple saying or doing to fix the problem.  Been like this all weekend.

iCloud mail is down again...mine allows mail to open, then when trying to address an email I get a beach ball and it stays until I quit mail.
That doesn't necessarily mean the mail is down in iCloud.
You can always check iCloud system status here.
If you are using Safari to access iCloud.com, go to the Safari menu bar click Safari / Empty Cache.
Now go the menu bar again and click Safari / Reset Safari.
Select the top 5 boxes then click Reset.
Quit then relaunch Safari, go to iCloud.com
    Try Mail.

  • Yahoo! Mail Plus and Reply-to address

I am a Yahoo! Mail Plus subscriber, and am able to send emails with various verified addresses, when using the Yahoo Mail Web interface.
My account serves as a collection point for primary mail (which originally goes to a spam service, and in turn is redirected to Yahoo Mail), and some other redirects. I then can check all mail here, and reply with various Reply-to addresses, which are what the recipients see.
But in iPhone Mail using the YahooMail set up, I am only able to specify the default yahoo address, which I never use as a visible "reply to" address.
Does anyone have a fix or suggestion how to solve this?
    Peter in Munich

There's a setting in your "Mail" settings that says "show To:cc label". I have that turned ON.
Now, when I go to an email, and reply to it, I can just Tap the "cc/bcc/from" field with my finger, and it suddenly expands the cc, bcc, and from fields onto their own lines.
The "from" field is now editable.
Touch it, and you get a nice list selection to send 'from' any of your configured email accounts.
    Does that work for you?

  • Upgraded and getting spinning rainbow ball constantly

I upgraded to Firefox 3.6.15 a few days ago. I also upgraded Flash. I'm getting the spinning rainbow ball almost every time I try to do something in Firefox now—when I type something, it stops after every 10 keystrokes and spins, when I scroll down a page it pauses to think, when I click on a dialogue box or to a field.
Also, whenever I try to save or print something, the dialogue box will pop up but then instantly disappear before I'm able to click anything.
I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.6. My Macbook is about two and a half years old; I'm wondering if this is just related to the age of my computer. I have plenty of memory available.

  • Create and Reply Problems in Mail

After upgrading from Panther to Tiger 4.5.5, I can no longer type a new message or Reply to an existing one. I can bring up a new message window, but it will only let me type about 10 letters, and then it beeps at me and won't let me type any more. The same thing happens when I try to forward a message -- it won't let me type above the forwarded message! Thinking maybe it was an installation problem, I reinstalled the 4.5.5 update again, and once again, fixed permissions, but it still doesn't work correctly.
The Reply and Reply All buttons don't work at all as they seem to be non-clickable.
I have no problems receiving mail, and all my mailboxes imported just fine. I also have a .Mac account (it is set up so it shows up in Mail) and seem to have the same problem creating or replying to messages using that account as well. The only way I can reply to a message or create a new one is to use my internet webmail or .mac account.
Has this happened to anyone else? Can someone out there please help me?
    Thanks.

Thanks, but that didn't work for me. I threw away my Preferences many times and nothing changed, but that's always a good place to start when you're having trouble with an application. Apple just released (April 4th or 5th) a new Security Update that addresses connectivity problems, so I hope this will help resolve some users' problems. I think the problem was with the last Security Update from Apple (released about 2 weeks ago).
I found another thread at the Apple Discussion Board with subject entitled: Topic: Yet Another Mail User Who Can't Compose or Reply at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jpsa?threadID=418581. You might want to try reading through some of the suggestions. Apparently, there are quite a few people with the same problem. I have solved my problem by using a cleaning tool called Cocktail and cleaned out both by System and Kernel Caches (see below). First try setting up a new System account (not just a new Mail account). Then open Mail, set your preferences, and try to Send something. If it works, you'll know the conflict isn't the application itself.
You can create a new System account/identity by going to your System Preferences, then choose System - Accounts, and click on the + to add a new account. Be sure to unlock the little lock on the bottom left so you can edit. After you set up the Account, then choose Login Options. I have "Automatically Log in as" checked so this account will come up when I start up my computer.
Mail and TextEdit both worked fine in the new account for me. I don't know if anyone else had trouble with TextEdit, but I had the same type of typing issues as when tyring to compose a new message in Mail. I could type a little, but the spacing would be messed up, or it would just lock up.
My system has now been fixed (Yay!) by cleaning out both the System Cache and Kernel Cache. There are two freeware utility programs that you can download at versiontracker.com (a great source for all kinds of programs) that will do this for you. One is called OnyX and the other is Cocktail. When you open up Cocktail, choose Files, then choose Caches. Check System, User, and Internet. Then press the Options button for more options. I have all the options checked, including Kernel Caches. This application worked for me, but OnyX is a great program that does all kinds of system cleaning and more -- definitely worth downloading. If one doesn't work, try the other.
I don't really know what the conflict was, but cleaning out the caches worked for me, and now everything seems to be back to normal.
I hope this helps. Good Luck.
