Actually that can slow down his machine even more.
The proper way is to use the ISP's DNS sever until he finds the real cause of the issue, then run google's free  namebench and see which DNS is fastest.
Even then Akamai based content (Apple uses) will be slow to download as it relies upon the closest server to one's location.

I like OpenDNS, but it's not always goign to resolve a OP's issue, just compound the problem.
It might be a bonky DNS on the ISP's end, but usually that doesn't last long.

    what's that all about then?
    thanks...

Thanks for updating us. That info shows you have an Intel iMac and should repost your question in this Apple Discussions forum area:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=189
Your iMac is much newer and advanced than the ones covered in this forum. Should someone fail to realize yours is not a older G4 iMac system, they might give advice that would not be appropriate to your situation.

  • Twirling thingy to let you know it is still downloading mail

Admittedly a minor point, but with the new Mail in 10.5.5, is there a way to turn on some sort of notification that it is till searching for mail or downloading, like the previous version did. Now all it does is quietly sit there and then ultimately pings you when the downloads are done. Is there a setting or did they do away with that notification icon?

Hmmm…it could be that Apple removed that from 10.5.x for only one mail account, though I have no confirmation of that from my contacts and I'm not using 10.5 so I can't test it, either. Or, it could be a byproduct of your other problem(s) since installing the 10.5.5 update.
Did you Repair Permissions both before and after installing the update? If not, I'd do that, as well as the other steps I mentioned in your other topic, then try it again. You should also test it by creating another User Account and setting up your Mail account there to see if the spinning gear icon is shown there when fetching new mail.

  • I have an iphone 3 and when i click software update it says cannot contact iphone software update i need help so i can get apps

plz help, i need to update my iphone and it wont let me HELP!!!!!
i also try to sync music to it and when i do it freezes the computer and the rainbow spiral thingy shows up

I don't care how old it is! I have a 5 year old dell laptop and a brand new dell laptop but I still get the same updates for both from windows! I don't do contract phones, Its the biggest money sham in the market. So, that being said im not spending my hard earned money on a new phone when I have a perfectly good one now! Apple just needs to appreciate all of there customers not just the ones that have their newest phones. Period.

  • Black screen before intallation screen

So i have an imac G5. no intel chip or built in camera.
i put in the leopard disc and click the drive i want to install it on... it restarts then asks me to replace the batteries on my mouse, i do so, i continue and the screen stays black with the rainbow waiting thingy...i can not eject the disc, it sounds like it is trying to do something but nothging happens. i have pulled the plug and turned it on but because the disc is in the drive it automatically starts the instalation and repeats the problems i have described...
    what do i do?

The fact it is slow suggests you'll have an even worse Leopard install experience. You must isolate the problems of the speed of Tiger to get it back to normal before attempting to install anything. You don't know if hardware is at issue. Initially you should backup your data at least twice*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
See if your hard drive directory or permissions are out of whack and try to fix them*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/directoryfaq.html
Then if you can get it up to normal speed you can upgrade following these directions*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/upgradefaq.html
If you can't get it up to normal speed, tell us if you have determined the directory is OK, any third party installed software or hardware including version numbers, so we can look up whether the problem is their compatibility with Tiger, or something else wrong with your machine.

    any clues ? please.
Loaded CS4 yesterday everything else works far as I can see.
    Mac OSX 10.5.5

Mine too. I just launched Flash CS4 for the first time
tonight and I can't create a new file. It crashes every time. I
tried restarting my computer but that didn't help.
I'm using a Macintosh G5 dual-core intel xeon with Leopard

I wish I knew the answer. Maybe I just have to reinstall
    everything.

  • Safari Beyond Slow

i know this is a question posted before, but please humor me:
Background: i purchased my PB 15" in April 2005 and only use it for Internet uses, occasionally some MS Office documents, and normal amounts of downloads (Myspace and Limewire); no games, technical graphical stuff, etc.
lately Safari v1.3.2 has been really really slow on almost everything. for example just today i was trying to reserve a rental car; each time i clicked on
anything the cursor turns into a spinning rainbow circle thingy for at least 10 seconds or longer, making the whole experience too long. almost impossible to switch windows until the first page has finished loading.
i already cleared 95% of the cache, cleared history, cleared Java cache, used ClamX to scan for viruses (none found), emptied trash, and uninstalled anything programs i don't need. still it's getting worse.
could it be Limewire? when i open it up EVERYTHING slows down; it only gets a little faster after i quit Limewire, but not that much better. will uninstalling it help? is the computer infected?
please help! i'm not computer savvy either!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You could trash your Icons folder, but see how big it is first.
    HOME>YourName>Library>Safari>Icons Folder.
Do a "get info" on it (Apple Key and "i" key)
    How big is it?
Over 1 MB should be trashed.
Then restart Safari. See if it's better.Limewire could be a definite culprit.
I've never used it, but I understand from people
very knowledgeable that Limewire ***** the life out of Safari.
Limewire must be UNINSTALLED, not simply trashed.

ANY HELP WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Another Importing Problem

I recently added an iMac G5. Running OS 10.4.3. 1 GB RAM
Cannot play or import video. Window states camera is connected. I can FF/Rew. When I play, I occasionally get "pixels" that flash on and off but no recognizable video. The camera then becomes difficult to control and sluggish with the "rainbow twirling wheel" thing.
    No other programs are open.
Camera is a Sony DCR-TRV22 which has worked and still does work flawlessly on the Power Book G4 still using Jaguar.
Christmas is coming soon and the baby's video is a major part of the presents.
    Thanks
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    I quote QuickTimeKirk:
”Open the Audio MIDI Setup application (Utilities folder).
Try changing the settings to 44100Hz (CD Quality) or to 48000Hz (typical of the iMovie formats).
Others call this the GarageBand fix. Opening GB also resets the Audio MIDI Setup.”

    Exact same issue here!
I think it has to do with some third party app. I've used Kuvvo to automatically get wallpapers from the net en change them.
After I decided to go back to my own wallpapers and removed the Kuvvo app, my wallpaper prefs is crashing.
I tried to reinstall Kuvvo with the hope of fixing broken links / references but to no avail!

  • Mail will not stop loading, twirling rainbow icon will not stop, cannot close mail application then.

Just downloaded OS X Mountain Lion and on my Mac Book Pro (mid 2009).  When I select the mail application this problem occurs: the rainbow icon that twirls will not stop, and then I cannot close the mail program at all.  No clue what to do next, thanks for the help or ideas. SanibelMan 09/09/2012 @ 2am EST.

Click on the apple in the top left corner of the computer. If it doesn't let you, open another application such as finder, and then click it, then go down the force quit, then click mail and then press force quit.

  • IPhoto doesn't respond - twirling rainbow circle!! Can anyone help me??

im running Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.1.
I try to open iPhoto and it just doesn't respond and i get the twirling rainbow circle.
I then have to force quit.
    Can anyone help me??

First try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and try to create a new, test library.  If you can't then try the following: make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
If you can create and use a new library then the problem lies with your current library.  In that case  make a temporary, backup copy (select the library and type Command+D) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Locked at load screen  apple thingy twirls....had it on for over an hour, have tried using the Shift key....no luck...the grey screen of patience testing is winning

so i decided to use my old 15 inch macbook, circa 2008, (around christmas i got it) as my hard drive for my sonos system,   ok, that's too much info.  the nuts and bolts of it, is that my macbook is plugged in, and starts with the gray screen and the little twirly gadget, but hence it moves forward no more...i have tried the Safe start, although i'm not sure how long you have to hold the command  button....just trying to get this baby back among the living   i submit to you who have chosen to read this and am as pliable as warm play doh.   i'm not sure i can find the boot up disks, as i moved recently...but other than those simingly insurmountable issues its just wonderful to be on the right side of the grass.....back to you community!

Well the next step, while it should not cause data loss, at least has the potential to lose your data. That would be reinstalling the OS. It is also possible that the data is already gone though I hope that is not so. If you decide you want to procede, boot again to the Snow Leopard (10.6) install DVD and work through the installer. Choose reinstall when asked what you want to do. Do NOT choose erase and install as that would definitely lose your data.
I'll keep my fingers crossed. Please in the future make sure your important data is backed up.
