Raise audio level problem?
When adding gain to a clip on the timeline no matter what function I use, volume effect, raise track or clip level, I seem to invoke auto audio gain. The audio level, (amplitude) slowly raises during pauses? Any way to defeat this?
I'm not sure I understand. Can you elaborate?

I'm working with some pretty terrible source audio that I sent over to soundtrack pro. The dialogue is incredible low and applause and laughter are really hot. Is there a way to reduce the amplitude of all the applause and laughter in one shot rather than having to go in and do each one separately. I've done some compression but that results in clips. Can I set a maximum level, say .10, and have all audio above that be reduce to that level?
Thanks,
mattAh: that audio which you posted isn't phase-reversed, but it's skipping ..jumping, with bits missing.
This sounds (seems) as if the video was recorded at perhaps DVCAM speed (..on a Sony professional camcorder..) and it's being played back on a normal miniDV camcorder.
Your Canon MV5iMC wouldn't be able to play back a videotape recorded at DVCAM speed, although (almost) any Sony camcorder can.
If you can borrow a Sony miniDV camcorder, try importing from that: it should be able to play the video and audio correctly, I believe.
[NOTE: I don't know anything about Panasonic DVCPRO, if that's what your "AV expert" used ..well, I know a bit: it won't play back in any normal miniDV equipment. But it seems to me that he probably used a Sony DVCAM camera, not a Panasonic camera. DVCAM is identical to normal miniDV, except that the tape runs 50% faster, to give a wider recording track and thus to avoid dropouts. Although you can't record at the DVCAM speed with normal 'amateur' Sony camcorders, they will correctly play back DVCAM recordings: they detect the faster recording speed, and then automatically speed up their playback tape transport mechanism accordingly. This only works with Sonys, though, and won't work in any other make of camcorder.]
P.S: If it's a 60 minute tape, and the entire tape has been used, but you've only got 40 mins of recording on it, then it's definitely been recorded at DVCAM speed. -
After Effects CS 5.5 MXF OP1a Audio Levels Problem
Hallo Forum,
Ergebnis: After Effects hebt ungefragt den Pegel an.
Vielen Dank

Can you raise audio level on just the left side of a stereo track?
Video with two lavs and two channels but capturing as stereo. One of the lavs is really low. Anyway to just raise that one side? I have Premiere CS5.52 and Audition 5.5 but don't see an obvious way to do what I need in either program.
Thanks for any help.Jim Simon wrote:
For myself, I prefer the Fill effects. That'll center the channels. You'll have to duplicate the audio track and use Fill Left on one and Fill Right on the other, but you end up with easily adjustable audio.
But doesn't that leave you with two same mono tracks with the whole signal from both channels in there?
For me the easiest way is either apply the Channel Volume effect from the effects panel to the audio clip in the timeline
or, as Bill suggests, the Break out to Mono from the context menu to the source clip in the project panel.

Why are audio levels limited to 12?
I have never understood why raising audio levels is limited to 12. I end up doubling audio tracks, which still doesn't raise the audio to the desired level, and seems really foolish for a professional program like FCP. Am I doing something wrong?
While I'm on the topic, I aim to peak my levels at -12, but that generally leaves my final product on the quiet side in its final form (generally DVD). Any tips there?
Thanks
AaronThis is actually kind of tricky. Ever notice how when you import music from a cd you've got to crank the levels way DOWN? This is because the digital realm allows for a lot more perceived volume. And producers, in their wisdom, use every available bit of headroom. Even look at some of the soundtrack loops-- same dealie.
the -12 on the FCP audio scale, of you do out to an analog mixer is understood to equal zero dB ANALOGUE. But you can set the scale any way you want, really. A lot of television stations want a reference tone of -20-- giving you that much more headroom.
So... unless you're going to end up with an analogue master, treat that -12 as a general level, rather than a peak, which could go as high as -3-- although I still like more headroom than that, and try never to peak over -6 for an atomic explosion or some such.
Then you've got to take into account all the subtleties of your mix. A motorcycle passing by is louder than the dialogue, shouting is louder than whispering, foley effects like footsteps ought to be subtle. I could go on and on.
What I think one should strive for is a soundscape with things at a realistic level in relation to each other, with nothing either so low it won't be heard, or so loud that it will clip. Remember that folks can always turn up the volume on their sets, as long as you didn't make it too low.
Am I babbling yet? -
I no longer have sound when playing my clips through adobe premiere elements 12. How to I correct this problem? I have checked all audio levels and there is no mute on etc. I updated to 12.1, but still no sound in any clips. Even not on old files which used to work.

What computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 12/12.1 running on? Can we assume that this audio plays back OK
on the same computer when you are using a computer player independent of Premiere Elements?
What are the properties of these clips that worked before but do not know with regard to sound
For now, I will assume that you are working on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit.
Have you checked the Edit Menu/Preferences/Audio Hardware ASIO settings? Do you have any 3rd party audio devices incorporated in your computer environment?
Please delete the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file and, if that does not work, then the whole 12.0 Folder in which the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file exists. The Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit path is
Local Disk C
Users
Owner
AppData
Roaming
Adobe
Premiere Elements
12.0
and, in the 12.0 Folder, is the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file that you delete. If that does not work, then delete the whole 12.0 Folder in which the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file exists. Make sure that you are working with Folder Option "Show Hidden Files, Folders, and Drives" active so that you can see the complete path cited.
Do you have installation files or installation disc with the purchased serial number in case we need to resort to uninstall/reinstall?
We will be watching for your follow up.

How can I raise the audio level of just a PORTION of a clip (not the whole thing)?
Would like to raise the level of one part of my project but NOT the other. This only seems to allow me to raise the entire project, but not individual sections. Earlier versions of iMovie had the ability to crossfade several audio tracks, etc., but this 'new and improved' one doesn't. Am I missing something?
Have tried separating the audio, but that doesn't help.
Thanks,
CameronCameron,
Have a look at this article:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iMovie/9.0/en/mov3b0fb5f2.html
You can adjust only a portion of the audio of a clip without further splitting it.

After Effects CS4 audio levels expression problem
Basically what I have is a layer with a checkbox. There is also an audio layer which has its audio levels linked to the checkbox by this expression:
if(thisComp.layer("White Solid 1").effect("Checkbox Control")("Checkbox")==true)
[5,5]
else
[-20,-20]
No matter if the checkbox is checked or not, when previewing the audio is played as if it had Audio Levels set to 0. When there is no expression, the audio levels can be controlled normally. But when the expression is applied, the Audio Levels is stuck at 0dB. This problem seem to be apparent only when previewing. After the audio is rendered, the file plays as it would be expected. Could anyone please help me with this?
EDIT: Also, the waveform seems to react normally to the checkbox.Thank you for the reply!
I never put the curly brackets when there is only one number since it saves some typing. I tried this time, but it made no difference. Also tried writing 1 instead of "true", still the same problem. I also tried this expression:
temp = -40 + 40* comp("Main Comp").layer("SOUND CONTROLS").effect("Appearance Sounds")("Checkbox");
[temp, temp]
The same problem persists. The preview sounds wrong, the render sounds right. -
Audio level higher than needed after encoding
Hi,
I'm editing a film.
Voice over level is set to maximum for most part of it. It sounds as it supposed to sound after encoding.
There are several parts of the film that are supposed to be quiet. They are set as quiet on the timeline and do sound quiet during preview playback.
The problem is after I export the film to mpeg (I've also tried many other formats) the sound level in those quiet parts is automatically raised to very high. Those pieces sound almost as loud as the voice over. Looks like Premiere or Media Encoder have some automated audio level normalization or something like this.
I've tried to find encoding settings that are perhaps responsible for that, and I've also looked up for a solution on Adobe forums -- but I couldn't find anythind appropriate.
I'm using Premiere CS5 on a PC.
Thanks in advance!
This man seems to have the same issue: http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/3/906064Igor,
Always glad to help, even if not directly.
I use MediaPlayer Classic HC for playback testing on the computer, and it seems to handle my Audio better than WMP, and some others. Do not know KM, so cannot comment on it.
I also edit Audio by ear, with but a glance at dB levels, from time to time.
Now, though you're probably way ahead of it, this ARTICLE gives some tips on Audio Levels, and some different methods of adjusting them.
Good luck,

I have a recording where the microphone level was set slightly too low and the speaker wore the lavalier microphone a little off center. I tried to raise the overall gain by 4db which brought the higher levels of the recording up correctly, but throughout the entire recording the speaker turns his head away from the microphone and in those spots the levels are still way to low. I tried bringing the gain back down to its original level and then brought it into soundbooth and equalized the audio, but that amplified everthing including the speakers breathing and room airflow to unacceptble levels. Is there an easier way to fix the levels other than manually adjusting the audio throughout the entire video. Is there a way to raise the entire recording 10db to fix the lowest levels and set a peak point so the louder parts of the recording don't clip?
thanksHonestly when a speaker turns their head in my personal experince you probably won't ever get it totally perfect tone and sound wise. However I normally just use a highpass filter to remove the room's AC noise and a denioser to remove the hissing that gets added by all the gain. I usally set the highpass to around 130-170 in Premiere. The denioser usually gets set to around -12 to -20 depending on how much is required.
You could also use the dynamics effect and then use a compressor so that it adds gain to clips but also keeps the audio levels of the louder clips lower/reduces them (do this by enabling the limiter and also adjusting the compression ratio/threshold etc.)
Another option would be to use adobe audition or soundboth to remove specific frequencies, although for the most part you could just use the highpass filter I mentioned and achieve the same goal since your problem seems to be a lot of AC noise.
If you wanted to simply raise the audio by 10 you could use the compressor/dynamics effect and turn the gain to 10 and then set the limiter on the effect to w/e you want the limit to be and then the levels won't clip. Unless you push them really hard into the limit which almost never happens unless you just crank something way up. -
Blackmagic audio levels low. Need some help!!!
I just got the blackmagic sp. Everything is working great except for the audio input to the computer. I have set the reference level for tone to 0 on my beta sp deck. I'm clipping with the gain all the way down on my monitor sound board. The main problem is that i cannot get my audio level above -15 in FCP. Any Suggestions?
Dual 2.5 GHz PowerPC G5 Mac OS X (10.4.4) 4 GB DDR SDRAMTry this:
Beta deck 0dB on the meter
Set the mixer at unity (what sort of mixer is it?) Put the master output fader at whatever the mixer thinks is zero on the slider. Raise the L&R input sliders until you get 0dB on the mixer's meters. Open log and capture and play bars and tone from the deck. Look at the meters in fcp. Adjust the mixer master fader until the level raises to -12 dB.
Does this not work?
If it doesn't you might want to check how you are coming out of the mixer-- are you sure you're using the proper outputs? -
Trouble viewing audio levels in Voice Over tool
Hello,
I often record voice over into Final Cut Pro using the Voice Over tool. In the middle section of the Voice Over window there is a 'Level' meter that flashes Green to Yellow and Red, illustrating the level of audio being fed into the Mac. For some reason though, this has stopped working for me.
My set up is this: A Mic in our voice over booth connects to a Soundcraft 4 channel mixing desk via an XLR cable. The mixing desk is linked to a JVC HD tape desk, which is connected to the Mac via FireWire.
Previously, to capture Voice Over I set the tape deck to 'Line' input, in 'DV' mode and set the Voice Over tool to 'DV Audio' as the source.
I can see sound levels on the mixing desk. I can see sound levels on the tape deck, but I can't see sound levels on the Mac's VO tool. Despite this, it does still capture voice over (I just can't 'see' it).
This problem is annoying because it means Im unsure whether the Mac is actually receiving an audio feed or not unless I do a test recording first.
Any suggestions as to why the Voice Over tool would suddenly stop showing me Levels, would be greatly appreciated! My secondary Mac works fine when the AV settings are set to HDV, despite it receiving standard DV audio input. Whether FCP is set to DV or not doesn't seem to matter in this case.
In trying to resolve the issue I played around with DV/HDV settings within FCP and the Deck; trying different combinations, but with no success.
+To recap (just to clarify in my own head), the situation is this:+
+Both of my Macs, Primary and Secondary, happily record Voice Over, via the Voice Over tool.+
+The Mic in the sound room connects to a Mixing desk via an XLR cable. The mixing desk is also connected to 2 sets of headphones, one for the Artist and one for the Engineer. 2 audio jacks connect the mixing desk to the JVC tape deck. The JVC tape deck connects to my Mac via FireWire to the port at the rear of the Mac.+
+The issue is that the Primary Mac does not display audio Levels in the Voice Over tool, whilst it does on the Secondary Mac.+
+While Im recording Voice Over on my secondary Mac I can see that there is an Audio input because the Green/Yellow/Red bar flashes up. On my Primary mac this bar is inactive and therefore gives me no clues as to the level of audio being fed into the Mac.+ -
Flash audio level drop outs (Windows 8.1)
Hey,
Using adobe flash, I've been having issues with to audio nearly dropping out to nearly inaudible levels on mutiple websites. Anything that does use the flash player, it seems to be triggered when I plug in another device into the computer for use, or charging although it doesn't seem to be 100% consistant and seems less likely after reinitiating the flash player, but would happen after having the flash player open for a longer period of time then attaching a device. My current work around is to either load up a different browser e.g. Google Chrome, which will use it's own plugin container containing another instance of flash. Or to end task on flash from my task manager, then reload the page. which would restore proper audio levels. This does not appear to be specific to one webpage, or to one brower.

Driver: C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVSo looking further into things, it seemed to have started happening since I installed Steam. While steams loader was active in the background it would cause the flash audio to drop out. I don't know any reason why it would cause this, but have just disabled steam from starting up at all. Any insight on why these two programs would clash and cause audio issues would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

In Final Cut Pro x, Somehow my video got muted and I can't find a way to UNMUTE it!
(it won't let me manually lift up or down the waveform - nor go in and raise the level of loudness)
Any suggestions? (How to unmute)Do you know how to use the volume adjustment line?
If so, is it not working?
Can you post a screenshot of your audio? -
Audio Levels in Final Cut Pro 6.0.5
Is it possible to destructively alter the audio levels of a source clip to be higher than +12db?
Also, similarly, is it possible to destructively alter the midrange frequencies?
I have a lot of material to work through, and applying audio filters seems unecessarily time consuming. Any suggestions?
JaredYou could edit the audio into a nested sequence, then raise the levels on the clip inside the nested sequence, then in the parent sequence raise the levels on the clip representing the nest. You could even do another level of nesting and raise the levels again. You could even do another level of nesting...
