Raise to speak missing in IOS 8

I couldn't find a good way to report this as a 'bug' or 'feature request' wanted to register my unhappiness with the removal of this feature.  It is quite annoying to have Siri use the speaker at full volume when I want her to quietly add an appointment to my calendar.  I (use to) use 'Raise to talk' in the office, at the doctors office, or in places where my quietly spoken commands into the phone were fine, but Siri's blaring beeping and questions would have been distracting.  I don't get enough voice messages for the 'raise to listen' to be very meaningful to me.  I could already do that by pushing the play button.

  • IOS 8.1 - miss Siri option Raise to Speak

i miss the Siri option "raise to speak"  especially with the iPhone 6 plus this option make a lot of sense.

You can sort of do raise to speak.
You still can press the home button, put the phone to your ear and speak like you used to with raise to speak, the only difference is that you have to activate it manually and it doesn't use the speaker phone. Only you hear the results.

  • Is there any way to add back "Raise to Speak" to iOS 8?

Hi - I'm a student with disabilities and rely heavily on accessibility features that make my life easier. For example, I use a Bluetooth headset to trying answer phone calls and use Siri… I especially use the "Raise to speak" option for accessing Siri. Since updating my iPhone five us and my iPad air, I've been scrambling to access the "raise to speak" option for Siri without success. When I called AppleCare, the representative stated I should have that option to enable in my settings. When I explained to her that the option is not showing, she wanted me to reset my phone to factory settings. When I told her I googled the issue and found that it may have been removed in iOS 8… She put me on hold, Came back and told me I was right.
What's worse is that that my Bluetooth headset is no longer working with my iPhone 5S. She stated that it may being I needed adjustment from the manufacturer of the headset– Plantronics. All I know is that the apple care representatives seem confused and I am extremely disappointed in this really impacts my use of Siri and my phone.
When I asked her to submit feedback to her supervisor or the powers that be… I was simply asked to submit feedback to the Apple.com website. While I understand Apple might read that feedback, I also recognize that they don't reply and I don't feel that is great support to someone like me who has a disability and needs a solution. The"Hey Siri" option is not working for me.
Does anyone have any workarounds for the "Raise to speak" problem or the Bluetooth problem? Specifically, the Bluetooth issue is when I try to hit the button on my Bluetooth headset to answer a call or end the call. It's a Plantronics PLT M20 model.

If you have a headset, why use Raise to speak? Kinda defeats the purpose of the headset.
Press and hold the button on your headest to call up Siri.

  • Siri raise to speak in iOS 8

raise to speak is no longer a selection under Settings and it's no longer working. Did they do away with this feature?

Looks like you are right, it's no longer in Siri settings for my iPhone 4s. The iPhone iOS 8 User Guide no longer mentions it either, but tech note iOS: Troubleshooting Siri still does, so it's hard to know if this is a bug or not.
Whatever the case it's a pain, I use it frequently.

  • [BUG] iOS 6 - BATTERY DRAIN : SIRI Raise to Speak/Proximity Sensor Always On/Flashing When Screen Active

Bug: Raise to Speak sensor for Siri remains on whenever the screen is active - regardless of Siri Raise to Speak Setting (enabled or disabled).
After updating to iOS 6 (via iTunes - not OTA), I noticed that my battery was taking quite a bit of a hit.  Granted I was checking out the new features but aside from a very short call, nothing major in the way of activity.
I had also noticed that Siri sounded quite a bit different with iOS 6 (10A403) than with 5.1.1 (9B206).  Not only did the Siri Voice change but also the responses vary between the two iOS versions.
Example: What is the weather like in Alaska?
    iOS 5.1.1 response:
Here's the forecast for Juneau, Alaska through Monday
    iOS 6.0 response:
Here's the weather for Juneau, AK through Monday (note: Siri does not say "Alaska", instead Siri says 'A-Kay'
With iOS 6, Siri sounds more robotic.  After looking at speech rate settings and comparing between the two versions, I could find nothing different.  I decided to post a video and this is where the Siri bug became interesting and tied into the battery drain with iOS 6.
Remember with 5.0.1 we saw a hit on battery drain and one of the fixes was a fix to the proximity sensor (http://hottipscentral.com/could-siri-be-hurting-iphone-4s-battery-this-little-li ght-might-mean-something/).  Well, it appears this bug is back in iOS 6.  When I went to do the video, I noticed that my 4s had a flashing light near the earpiece.  It remained on continuously.  The only time it would stop flashing was when the phone was locked and the screen inactive.  As soon as I hit the lock button to bring the phone out of lock, the sensor would begin to flash again.
Give it a shot, hold up your iPhone to a webcam and see if your result is the same.
Submitting this to Apple via the feedback form.  Please do the same if you are seeing the same behavior.

I dont believe so Amy.  Phone has not sustained any damaging drops nor any liquid spills.  Was not an issue before but I figured I'd post as I believe this is a definite bug.  I neglected to mention that I have my wife's 4s (5.0.1 build) which I am using as a comparison.
Based on the issues folks are reporting with the ambient light sensor, its either the proximity or the ambient light sensor causing the drain.  I've turned auto brightness AND raise to speak both off and the sensor continues to flash as I described in my opening post.
If others can confirm, this will definitely need to be looked at by Apple and fixed.
I just found this - same behavior (posted 7/24/2012 on another forum - source link below).
Hi folks, remember the proximity sensor (always on bug) I reported here in iOS 6 Beta 1 bugs/feedback thread? It continues to happen in beta 3, I reported to Apple and the answer I got from them is that it behaves how it's intended to do
Thing is, when you turn Raise To Speak feature off, and use your webcam (no IR filter) to verify if it turned infrared proximity sensor off, results that it didn't. Since iOS 5 this bug has been present, power cycling, or doing a soft reset solves this issue but this solution does not apply in iOS 6. Don't have an idea on how hard it is on battery draining, but it makes no sense that this sensor stays on forever even when you turn this feature off. Unless it has to do with constantly display brightness adjust feature that we have noticed came with iOS 6 version. Doing some test of this feature (some of you commented about a brightness bug in earlier posts) I noticed that ambient light variations make that display brightness adjust accordingly to brighter or darker ambiences. Previous to iOS 6, the sensor samples the ambient light, and adjusts the brightness; it does this only once--each time you unlock the phone after waking it. Now in iOS 6 you can easily watch how brightness slider adjusts itself when display senses light variations. If you open Passbook app it raises brightness to full (it is supposed to act this way for easy reading of barcodes) but getting out of Passbook app makes that brightness readjusts itself responding to actual ambient light intensity (this adjusting task occurs slowly until brightness slider stops to right level).
I've checked and ambient light sensor and proximity sensor are separate and work differently but if Apple says that an always on proximity sensor in this iOS version is behaving how it is intended to do; all that I could think of is that it has to do with ambient light "sensing"??

  • Raise to speak iOS 8

From what I can tell, the Siri "raise to speak" feature has been replaced by the "hey, Siri" feature.  I was wondering if anyone knew if I am just looking in the wrong place or something.  If the feature is gone from iOS 8, then I hope Apple will bring it back in the future.
    IPhone 5, iOS 8.0 (12A365)

Same Problem on my iPhone 5S. I already erased my iPhone and restored it from iTunes Backup. But the Problem stays. I also tried to turn on and off the option to "Raise iPhone to listen or reply to an audio message“ from iPhone User Guide For iOS 8 under Settings->Messages-> Audio Messages. It could be a bug, but this didn't help. I hope its only a bug and not a feature. In my case I used this function quite often.

  • IOS 7.04 Raise to Speak Siri not working??

What's wrong with iOS? It's only worked a few times and at random times. Siri works just not the raise to speak to Siri function

Have you set Settings > General > Siri > Raise to Speak = "On"?

  • Bring back raise to speak for Siri in iOS 8!

BBring this back or let us toggle it on or off. I Used this all the time and cannot stand that to gone. Bring it back!

No more raise to speak is for me a real issue. I considered the ability to have SIRI speak trough the earpiece a real advantage over the competition.
Raise to speak was a way to ask something to your virtual assistant in the same way you would do to a real person, regardless of being in public or not.
Now if I want to call someone using voice I have to speck to my phone as if I where on my own in the office, having it talk back loudly, which is not an ideal thing to happen.
I don't think there is a good reason for Apple to remove this way of interacting with SIRI. Some say that this feature would be in conflict with the new messaging app, but at least give us the option to choose between the two.

  • Fix Siri's "Raise to Speak" After 7.1.1 Update

I found that after updating my iPhone 4s to iOS 7.1.1 this morning that Siri no longer triggered when I put the phone up to my ear. Settings/General/Siri showed "Raise to Speak" was still enabled. Flipping it off and then on again did not fix it, still no Siri (long pressing the Home button still triggered Siri btw).
Finally I switched "Raise to Speak" off again and restarted the phone (sleep/wake and home press), once it had rebooted I went into settings and put "Raise to Speak" on again, and now Siri is happily launching when I put the phone up to my ear again. Hope this helps anyone else who may encounter this problem.

Did a hard reset on the iPhone this morning and that seemed to straighten it out. Able to sync with iTunes, DiskAid, and Image Capture now. So far, issue resolved.

    Welcome to the Support Communities!
Here are a couple of things to try to address this issue:

  • Siri – 'Raise to Speak' issue

If you have the “Raise to Speak” turned on and you have other applications like Google or Google Translate on, Siri will come on first, and the other application may not work as well. As long as you don’t put thephone up to your ear, you should be ok.
It looks like Sir does not play well with others, or the other app need to look at this issue.

Please understand, all I am saying is that there is an issue, and yes I know I can turn off the rasie to speak, and I can just use the "home key" to start Siri. I just think it was something that was miss. I know it is a Beta system., and it would be nice if if could start an application like my TomTom, or if it could work with other applications. It may do that some day.
It was something I found in using the Google app where you speak and tell it what you want.
and maybe I am asking to much for a new system..

  • How to switch language on new Speak Screen in ios 8

The new Speak screen in iOS 8.0.2 is a very nice feature, but I am missing one element.
Is it possible to switch the language while reading?
I am native dutch speaking and my iOS system is in dutch. However when I have some text in english it happens that the system reads it in dutch.
    Several examples:
    - Reading in the iBooks App, suddenly the new page is read in dutch (see screenshot)
    - Sometimes there are texts fragments in another language. In this case switching to another language would be necessary.

Chris: Thanks for the response. Is there any way you can set up to keep banners up until you dismiss them or will they always disappear? I love my alerts, I just don't like it that I can't go directly to the app anymore..

  • "raise to speak" not working on iPhone 6

My son was very upset when he discovered that the "raise to speak" feature no long works on iPhone 6 or if you updated your iOS to 8. The issue seems to be that Siri comes through only on speaker and not the phone so there is no privacy when using Siri.
Can you tell me whether you know or have information that Apple will restore the "raise to speak" functionality in an iOS update? It really doesn't make sense that they took it out.

Apple has not made any statements about why they removed that feature. Speculation is prohibited. However, the fact that there is a new feature that allows you to raise the phone to make a recording in iMessages may be related.

  • Siri only works when "Raise to Speak" option is activated

    Hello:
I have iOS 7 installed in my iPhone 5 and I have the following problem:
Siri only works when "Raise to Speak" option is activated. When I change this option and I try to talk with siri I do not receive any answer.
Please, could someone give me an idea to solve this problem!
    All the best
    jc

I am having this same problem.  The problem appears to be related to the microphone and must be a softwear issue.  The microphone works with other apps, and works when making and receiving calls.  It also works when I "raise to speak" to Siri, but it does not pick up any sound when I attempt to talk to Siri by holding the home button, or when pressing the microphone button on screen when in the Siri interface.  Is it possible that holding the home button to talk to Siri is somehow not activating the microphone?
I should also note that I have tried turning the phone off and back on.  I have tried the reset by holding the home button and the sleep/wake button, and I have even restored the phone in iTunes, although I did not set it up as a new iPhone, because I am not interested in losing app data, call history, messeges, etc.
