Raising the functional level on a large forest/domain with a DC offline?

Hello All
I've done what research that I can and haven't been able to find a definitive answer outside of people purposely taking a DC offline while raising the functional level of a forest in case they need to do an authorative restore, but I have a bit of a different
situation and I just need to confirm something.
I have to perform the task on a very large AD infrastructure that includes 90+ domain controllers globally and I've run into a scheduling conflict that is out of my control. One of the locations overseas will be going through some maintenance during
my time window when I will be raising the functional level of the forest and domain.
The question is, what happens to the DC that is offline during this period? Once it is restarted, do the changes replicate to that DC, or do I need to perform the task in place for that DC? If anyone has any links or instructions on how to bring a DC online
after the functional level of both the forest and domain have been raised, please let me know.

The DC can be offline and it won't be an issue.  when it comes back online the changes should replicate to it.  Just don't keep it offline longer than the tombstonelifetime.

  • How can I raise the audio level of just a PORTION of a clip (not the whole thing)?

Would like to raise the level of one part of my project but NOT the other. This only seems to allow me to raise the entire project, but not individual sections. Earlier versions of iMovie had the ability to crossfade several audio tracks, etc., but this 'new and improved' one doesn't. Am I missing something?
Have tried separating the audio, but that doesn't help.
    Thanks,

    Cameron,
Have a look at this article:

You can adjust only a portion of the audio of a clip without further splitting it.

  • Why are all the sound levels so different!?? With VST's and in Ultrabeat...

I'm having so much trouble with the audio levels in logic pro. It seems every VST has a completely different level when the volume on the vst is set to 100. Miroslav Philharmonik is EXTREMELY quiet..., and when I load drums into ultrabeat, they immediately peak like crazy. I tried loading my drums up in battery 3 after that, and all the drums where extremely quiet compared to my other vst's YET it showed in the mixer that they were peaking????? I don't understand what's happening, I know you have to mix but this never happened in any other daw that I've used.

It's one of a the reasons mixers have volume controls.
Seriously - an orchestral instrument is likely to have hundreds of parts all playing at once. If each part was designed to hit close to 0dB, then it would be impossible to do anything as the resultant mix would be massively loud - you'd have to turn everything down all the time.
Drums are probably going to be peaking fairly loud in a mix, as they do contain a lot of the energy.
There is no standard. A mono synth will often have hotter levels than a polysynth part, as the polysynth could be playing 8-32 voices all at once. Also, different patches, and different instruments themselves will be programmed to have different volume levels.
This is all true regardless of DAWs, and is nothing specifically to do with Logic.
All all the instruments, and mixer channels have volume controls, to let you control their volume and place them where they need to be for your needs.

  • I can't use the function wifi in my HP Deskjet 3050 with Mountain Lion (0SX 10.8.1).

The driver allows only the USB conection. There is no disponibility of this driver in HP site or in Apple site.

    Hi,
For the Deskjet 3050 (J610) a full software not available at this time.
As there is no full software available for Mountain Lion you will need to set a temporary ad-hoc connection and then use the printer EWS to connect the printer to your router.
Press the wireless button on the control panel to show the wireless menu options on the printer display.
Select Wireless Settings on the printer display and then select Restore Netowrk Defaults.
Under the same Wireless and select Wireless Radio and make sure to set it as On.
From your Mac click the WiFi icon and then click Join Other Network.
Click Show Networks, select the printer SSID, it will include 3050 or J610 within its name, then click Join.
Allow 2-3 minutes to establish the connection.
Open Safari and click the Bookmarks icon ().
Click Bonjour and then click the printer name, the EWS page will appear.
    Enter the Networking tab.
Under Wireless (802.11) click Wireless Setup Wizard and then click Start Wizard and follow the steps listed on the screen to configure the wireless connection.
Note: If you required to provide the Security type for your wireless network, you may click the WiFi icon, click Network Preferences and select the Wi-Fi  network. Click Advanced and you will find the security type of your network within the Wi-Fi tab.
Once the Wireless Setup Wizard via the EWS completes, click the Wi-Fi icon of your Mac and connect to your router again.
Finally, go to System Preferences > Print & Scan and add the printer. confirm any prompt to get the drivers from Apple's servers.

  • Raising Domain Functional level

We have 75 domain Controllers in our Org and current Domain Functional level is 2003. We have a mix setup where all versions of OS are available starting from 2003. A large no of applications are also integrated with our current Active Directory.
My concern is, If I raise my Domain Functional level to 2008 then what are the consequences we might face in terms of accessing legacy applications.
Please let me know the checklist which we need to follow and incase of any failure then what will be the rollback procedure.
Looking forward for your valuable inputs.

    Hi,
I agree with others. Once the Functional Level has been upgraded, new
servers running on lower versions cannot be added
as Domain Controllers to the domain or forest. If all the DCs in the domain is server 2008 and later version, we can raise the function level of the domain to get more advanced features.
    > If I raise my Domain Functional level to 2008 then what are the consequences we might face in terms of accessing legacy applications.
For this question, make sure that the applications in the domain are compatible with the new functional level
For detailed information about how to raise function level, we can refer to the following link:

  • Existing 2003 forest functional level -- 2012 forest functional level in production environment?

    Hello experts!
A quick question if it can be one:
Is it possible to raise a forest functional level from 2003 to 2012 in a production environment (only 2003 DCs with existing roles to only 2012 DCs)?  If so, is there a standard implementation of the upgrade process
(migration of roles, migration tools, etc.)?
    many thanks!
    David

    hi,
    Thanks for posting.
Sorry i don't know if i am understanding your question. Are you talking about upgrading your DC's in your current forest to 2012 then raising the functional level?
If so, first of all you can only raise the forest and domain functional levels when all DC's in the forest and domain are at 2012 or higher.
To get your domain unto 2012 DC's there are a couple of paths you can adopt, but generally the simplest is:
    1. Introduce your first 2012 / 2012 R2 DC into your existing domain, this will extend the schema with the additional attributes that are required to 2012 - this is an automatic process during promotion of your first 2012 DC.
    2. Go through and start replacing your existing domain controllers. You don't normally do an inlace upgrade, the preferred method would be to use different hardware, built up the new DC to replace your existing one, then demote the existing one - keep going
through this process until all your DC's are 2012.
NB: which ever DC(s) currently holds the FSMO roles you will need to transfer these to one of your new 2012 DC's before you decommission that one.
if i've got what you were asking wrong, please let me know, otherwise hopefully this helps.

  • Raising Functional level - From 2003 to 2008R2

Recently I have completed the AD upgrade from 2003 to 2012. Now all sites have 2012 DCs only. Next i plans to raise the functional level of both Forest and Domain from 2003 t0 2008R2.
I want to know the things to take care before doing this upgrade.

    hi,
if you are only using 2012 DC's that you may want to go straight to 2012 functional level. The functional level change is generally classed as low impact and simply tells AD it can use all it's additional features.
There is no real roll back if any issues are caused during or after the change, so you need to ensure you have full backups and are aware of the forest recovery process. Make sure you have spoken to all your software vendors whose software integrates with
AD before doing the change to ensure that it won't affect the running of this software.
There is a very good article here from the MS Directory team on the process and the impact.

  • Raise domain functional level

    Hi All,
What all that need to be considered before raising domain / forest functional level.

    Hi channavera,
Some items that you want to consider are what OS are you running for all your DC's in the domain/forest. This is important, since you have to have a certain level for the functional level. For example, if you want to raise up to functional level of 2012,
you will need to make sure any DC's running 2008 or lower are upgraded before you do so. Raising the functional level will change up the schema for the domain, making it incompatible with the lower OS's.  If you are going to continue to run 2008
server in the domain/forest, you will want to only raise the functional level to 2008.  Also, keep in mind, you cannot go to a lower functional level (i.e. if you go to 2012, you cannot go back to 2008) except under very specific circumstances.
I know what I brought up is not the only consideration, but a big one, as it basically determines what functional level you want to use for the domain/forest.
Also, this technet site goes over what changes for each level. Understanding AD Functional levels

  • Cannot Replicate after upgrading domain functional level

    Hello,
Parent and child domain. Parent domain (forest) still in domain functional level 2003. However, child domain i just updated to domain functional level 2008 R2. Now replication is not working. I believe the issue is dns, but i do not know what could be different
the names have not changed? This is a two way transitive trust between domains.
Frequent messages from dcdiag dns, are
no DNS RPC connectivity (although i have tried restarting dcom, netbios and frs)
Also in event viewer many 13508 errors
Any help is greatly appreciated thank you.

Have you restarted the DCs after that you raised the functional level? The password of the krbtgt account is reset when the DFL is raised from 2003 -> and sometimes the DCs need to be restarted for the authentication to succeed up to the root.
If you from a Windows Server 2008 R2 DC run dcdiag /test:dns /E dose it report any errors?

  • Lync 2010 functional level

    Hi!
My Enterprise wants to know if this supported  Lync Server (UM 14.01, Front End
4.0, Mediation 4,0)  to continue operating if the client update your AD DS environment with AD DS Windows Server domain controllers 2012 R2 and raise the functional level of the domain and the forest from 2003 to 2012 R2.
    have a link bout of??
    Thanks.

You must raise all domains in which you deploy Lync Server 2010 to a domain functional level of Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008, or at least Windows Server 2003 native mode. Windows Server 2003 mixed mode is not supported.
All forests in which you deploy Lync Server 2010 must be raised to a forest functional level of Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008, or at least Windows Server 2003 native mode. Windows Server 2003 mixed mode is not supported.
Lync 2013 Support domain and forest Function level 2012R2 but Lync 2020 support domain and forest function level 2008R2.

  • Find a tombstone in a large forest

I need some guidance in finding a tombstone in a forest that has 90 domain controllers and 79 sites. Each domain controller is receiving three daily EventID 1864 alerts. One for the domain partition, one for the configuration partition and one
for the schema partition. I have checked the replication between all domain controllers using repldiag /CheckForStableReplTopology and it returned No topology errors found.
I created a PS script to go out to the forest and search all DC's for EventID 2042 and it returned nothing. Due to the size of the infrastructure and the fact that they set their tombstone lifetime to 400 days, running any type of query where I can pull
GUID's and check DNS, returns literally thousands of entries in the output. I currently have a support case with Microsoft that has been open for nearly two weeks now but we have not found a resolution that wouldn't take countless man hours. I came into
this situation recently and was told that this tombstone has been out there for around 4 years. The reason this has come up again is because the client is looking to raise the functional level of their forest from 2003 to 2008. I am doing this for a client,
so everything is done remotely, and sometimes very slowly due to the fact that these domain controllers are located all over the world, and sometimes in places that have very bad connectivity.
    A few quick questions:
Will they/we be able to raise the functional level of the forest with the tombstone there?
If we can, will this have any impact in the long run, or will it just remain a tombstone until it is found?
If we can't, is there a workaround to get the functional level raised while the tombstone is still there?
Is there any quick way to find either the name, IP address or even the GUID of the device that is causing these EventID's?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated as I've tried everything I could possibly think of and have been researching and trying different tools for over two weeks now.

If the server has reached tombstone lifecycle period the best way to deal with is demote/promote the DC.You cannot demote the faulty DC gracefully you need to do forcefull removal. You need to ran dcpromo/force removal and then run matadata cleanup on other
DC(healthy) to remove the instance of faulty DC from AD database and DNS.If faulty DC is fsmo role holder server the you need to seize the FSMO role on other DC.Once done you can promote the Server back as DC.
Sometimes its difficult to remove lingering object either using repadmin /removelingeringobjects or other tool. If lingering objects spreads then its more difficult to tackle them, demoting & promoting the server containg the lingering is best bet.

  • Lync 2013 and Raising Forest/Domain Functional Level?

My current forest and domain functional levels are 2008 R2. I know I can safely upgrade the functional levels in most cases, but I want to specifically know with regards to Lync.
Our entire environment, including Lync, is running on Windows Server 2012 R2. (We have no domain joined clients.) We are running Lync 2013 Standard with all the latest updates.
Can I safely raise the forest and domain functional levels to 2012 R2 without impacting Lync?

    Hi,
Yes, you can raise Forest and domain function level to Windows Server 2012 R2 without issue.
After raising Forest\domain function level, the new features that rely on the functional level are generally limited to AD itself. Regardless, changing the Domain or Forest Functional Level should have no impact on an application that depends on
    Active Directory.

    Hi all,
I'd like to confirm which Domain/Forest functional levels of Active Directory is supported for "Active Directory Resource Pool Synchronization" in Project Server 2013.
I guess that 2003 or later is supported, but my customer required reliable sources.

    Anyway I solved this issue.
I couldn't find article that I desired, so I asked advice to my colleagues and they told that the functional level 2003 or later are supported in their experience.
