Ralink RT3290 802.11bgn Wifi Card - Possible Issues [SOLVED]

Dear Lucky owners of such a card, At least from my experience I realized it is not that bad card, even if most probably many production pieces were faulty or not working properly, and many issues can be resolved. Let me list in order of time the issues I faced and solved about this wifi card:  0) First issue is not about RT3290 card itself but it is related to 802.11w encryption compatibility in between Windows8 and Cisco not allowing 802.11n speed rates so failing to G speeds only. - SOLUTIONS:   a. As first test I would recommend trying another router from different brand to see if connecting at 802.11n speed rates   b. If you prove point a issue, then try to fix the issue based on following post (in which you can see the reply from myself Emanuele on the 29th of Nov 2014):  https://supportforums.cisco.com/document/113836/windows-8-clients-cant-associate-cisco-unified-wireless 1) Signal strenght issue: original wifi card RT3290 installed on my HP laptop was having really bad antenna, with signal fluctuating and sometimes bad even really close to any Router I tried. - SOLUTION:   Replace the RT3290 card even with same new card.  (In my case as laptop was under warranty, I proved the issue via screenshots and they replaced with new card solving my signal strenght issue).  2) Original issue (1) was actually resolved after HP replaced the wifi card with same model, but with the latest driver installed 5.0.45 seems like wifi rates change too frequently based on high sensitivity of the driver itself, so that suggested me issue was still there, so making me re-testing anything from scratch. - SOLUTION:    Install 5.0.37 Driver - frequent rate changes issue (with driver 5.0.45) disappears and sensitivity of signal to rate changes seems to be a really good compromise to have good throughput.  3) To check out 2nd issue above I started again using a third party software inSSIDer free version to check signal while I was doing speedtest on web.
 - RESOLUTION:
    inSSIDer normally works on Windows7 without any issue but on Windows8 (at least tested with RT3290) I have just discovered somehow this software was slowing down wifi card performance drastically showing a speed up to 0.1Mbps rather than 40Mbps.   Simply closing the application issue was not recurring, so uninstalled it and after solving all the other issues above this card works perfectly (at least so far ) Hope this post will be informative and will help other about-to-get-mad guys as me

    Rats.
    I hope the replacement card fixes the problem.  Over the years I have had just one bad network card -- and it drove me nuts tracking down that it was, indeed, a failed card.

    Hi, We were using Cisco AP which was working absolutely fine when WEP is configured, after changing the Encrpytion to WPA2-PSK & AES. Laptops having Ralink RT3290 802.11bgn Wi-Fi Adapter is connected in limited mode or the wireless network is not displayed in Wi-Fi list. Tried to manually add the network but still no success Having Driver Version: 5.0.21.0 tried updating the driver to 5.0.37.0 but no success

  • Downgrade an 802.11n WiFi card to either b or g

    My new laptop has a built-in WiFi card. It is a Broadcom 802.11n card. The brcmsmac driver works fine. It is able to see the router the printer is on, but it is not able to see any of the other WiFi access points in the neighborhood including the WiFi provided by our apartment.
    Looking around online I found that the problem is likely that the 802.11n protocol is not supposed to work with encryption other than WPA2. My printer's router is using WPA2, but the apartment's internet router is using WEP (I don't control the router - I don't get to make the choices on it).
    For some reason, the brcmsmac driver is not automatically downgrading to the 802.11g connection protocol. Is there any way of forcing it to do so?

    I found that iwconfig has an option for setting the modulation, but it is not supported for my card.

    I am also starting to think that my problems don't have anything to do with the connection protocol. Some of the other networks in the neighborhood are also using WPA2 encryption and my internal network card doesn't see them either.

  • Macbook Pro - SD Card Reader Issues Solved!

    I recently purchased a gently used, early 2011 MBP. I've had it for a few months, but I did not try using the SD card reader until last week... so much for kicking the tires. Long story short, the darn thing did not recognize or mount one single SD card out of a handful of cards, and at least 3 different card manufacturers all used with my Canon DSLR. I searched the net trying to find a solution and tried everything from sticking the card in at a some strange and ridiculous slant to shutting the computer down three different ways and resetting the System Management Controller (SMC); nothing worked. So today I spent 25 minutes or so chatting with an apple care specialist and they (Jim the apple care guru) finally came up with a solution, even though I'm sure neither one of us knows exactly why it worked. So here goes...
    Put your SD card in a external card reader, once it's mounted go to disk utilities and reformat (erase) the drive to Mac OS Extended. Take it out of your external reader and put it in the built-in reader on your Mac. Now, of course, it will no longer work in your camera or most other devices so you'll have to format it again in your device of choice. However, here's the kicker... once I did l all of that and took some quick pics, I put it back in my MBP and it popped right up even after a reboot. But wait there's more.... I then put the SD card in my wife's work laptop (PC running Win8) and played with the files for a bit, then stuck it back in the Mac and it still recognized it. So there goes the "windows screws up the formatting myth).
    So naturally I assumed that I would be forced to go through this double formatting process for all of my SD cards (and I have a lot), but then it happened! A Christmas miracle in October. I tried a second card, and then a third and a fourth and a fifth, etc... AND now they ALL pop up just like they should. Without reformatting or any other humanly changed processes. Yep... There you have it, it makes no sense. But it works ;)
    Somehow formatting just one card in the card reader "woke up" the whole process, almost like my MBP was like, hmmm I was wondering what you kept sticking inside that's slot of mine...

    Anyone else with card reader issues should read this page. Just because your card reader doesn't appear to be working or has mysteriously dropped off your system doesn't necessarily mean a logic board replacement. I've repaired several portables over the years that had been quoted for costly logic board replacements, when in fact the failures were relatively easy to resolve once you understood the real problem.
    It's common belief a PRAM or SMC reset should fix all hardware glitches but sometimes it just doesn't go deep enough, as I found out with my 2011 MBP. Simply removing the battery was all it took to resurrect my seemingly dead card reader, when PRAM and SMC resets failed to have any impact on the problem.

  • Replacement of Ralink RT3290 802.11 bgn WIFI Adapter replacement

    I have HP Envy m6-1188ca - A series A10-4600M / 2.3 GHz - Windows 8 64-bit - 8 GB RAM - 1 TB HDD - DVD SuperMulti - 15.6" HD BrightView wide 1366 x 768 / HD - AMD Radeon HD 7660G - brushed aluminum, natural laptop and its network adaptor giving me alot of trouble. I would like to replace it and need list of compatible network adapator for this laptop model. Thanks for the assistance

    I hope the replacement card fixes the problem.  Over the years I have had just one bad network card -- and it drove me nuts tracking down that it was, indeed, a failed card.

  • Ralink RT5390R 802.11bgn Wi-Fi Adapter

    Hi, my Ralink Wifi Adapter will not allow me to connect to any internet/ wifi at all. I even plugged in an ethernet cable and my computer said wouldn't connect to it. It just that the Ralink wifi adapter is experiencing driver or hardware realted probems.It also says Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardwar. The driver may be corrupted or missing (Code39). Please help because I cannot access the internet what so ever and I'll be returing to college soon!

    If this utility does not resolve the issue, please reference the "code 39" section of the document. An explanation of the issue is provided, along with beneficial troubleshooting steps. Please attempt the troubleshooting, and provide your results. If the issue is not resolved, please provide this additional information:

  • Ralink Wireless 802.11n LAN Card built in

    I accidentally  deleted my network wireless connection I was using on my Ralink Wireless Hotspot (which is built into my Windows 7 HP Pavilion Desktop). When I try to set up a new wireless connection it never finds the connection. I know it is possible
    to set up a wireless connection to this computer, but now when it scans to set up a network it picks nothing up. Could it be my Ralink Wireless card or something else. Please help me set up a wireless hot spot and/or a new wireless network connection.

  • Verizon FIOS ActionTel WiFi Router (possible issue)..WEP enabled

    I don't broadcast my SSID.
    I have WEP turned on.
    I have noticed that sometime, when I come back into range..I am not able to "reconnect" even though the password and everything else seems to be fine.
    I setup the iPhone settings with "normal" WEP (not the hex/ascii version).
    Sometimes, it comes back..it just takes a while...other times, 5-10mins can go by; and by then I hit sleep->wake, and it finds it ok.
    When I go to "choose wifi network"..I see it pop-up, I try to select it..and get "Unable to connect to <wifi location name>"
    Thoughts/ideas? Anyone else having this issue with FIOS router?

    Ok, I've been on the phone with APPLE 4 times, and got it to work, but then my computers didn't want to get online...
    This happened with getting the Nintendo Wii working too...
    _--------------- SOLUTION -------------------_
    1) Push and hold for 15 seconds, the red RESET button in the back of the ActionTec router
    2) After it has been reset, it will now use the WEBKEY and ESSID on the white stickers on your router (on bottom of router)
    3) You will have to use these to reset your computer and iPhone settings.
    4) Restart your computers, and re-enter new info from ActionTec Router bottom stickers
    5) iPhone - Home - Settings - Wi-Fi - See your ActionTec Router now (using the ESSID from sticker) Choose Router
    6) Choose blue circle arrow button
    7) Choose PASSWORD
    8) Choose HEX or ASCII
    9) Enter in your WEB password from bottom of ActionTec Router
    10) Click JOIN
    11) This should now work.... Be sure that the network is full and you see first the mobile strength, AT&T, and then the WiFi signal strength...
    Now, it works for my computers, Wii, DS, iPhone, Laptop....

  • 2nd sound card possible issue

    Has anyone been successful in using the onboard sound chip of a K8N Neo4 Platinum with a other PCI sound card?
    I used to have a Abit with Nforce2, i was using the onboard sound chip for my speakers and a PCI sound blaster audigy for my headphone and mic. That would allow me to watch video or listen to music on the speakers (onboard sound) and talk to buddies over Skype or Teamspeak over my headphone. But now with this new MSI board i am having every day total freeze of the computer, sometimes it would do a 1 second squeaking noise and would frooze totally. So i decided to remove my ATI tv pro tuner and see if that was the cause, but no it would still happen. Then i went and bought a cheap c-media base sound card to replace the sound blaster. But that was worse, has soon has i would use onboard sound i would get a blue screen of death with a cmedia.sys error.
    So now i'm back to the sound blaster but tired of those regular freeze, and i disable it to find out if that pci card could be the cause. But then i thought maybe there is a way to what i wanted to do with only one sound card? Is there? can i listen to tv/video/music throught the speakers connected to the line out and talk to my friends and hear them only throught my headphone? I sure can plug the mic in the onboard jack mic in, but how can i get sound from voice to only my headphones?
    If that is not possible i then need to know if i can use a second sound card on that K8N Neo4 Board.

  • W520 Wifi-card replacement issue

    I ordered my W520 with the ThinkPad wireless card featuring the Realtek 8188CE chipset. After going through a few Linux installs and realizing that this card had terrible Linux support, I decided to upgrade on my own to the Intel 6200, believing this was the upgraded chip. Upon starting my computer with that card installed, it went through the BIOS, then failed to boot due to an incompatible wireless card. Realizing I made a mistake I returned that card and switched back to the Realtek. Recently I've been wanting to go back to Linux, so I decided to try and upgrade again, but made sure to get the Intel Centrion Advanced-N 6205 card, or the upgrade option from Lenovo that is shown. This still does not work for me unfortuantely and it's really bugging me. Does anyone have any tips/tricks/ideas/solutions?

    Where can Lenovo branded cards be found? I've tried using the IBM site for replacement parts, and the part number is never found (I've tried 60Y3247, the Realtek, and 60Y3252, what the Intel is supposed to be if my research is correct) and they're not listed on the Lenovo site.

  • Dead laptop - bad wifi card or ???

    Hi all,
    Oddball question: I have a Lenovo t410i that is completely dead. About two years ago, I dropped a bit of water on the keyboard, and something got fried so that the keys wouldn't type correctly anymore. When I went to replace the keyboard, I accidentally ripped one of the cables from the Intel Wifi Card (model 622anhmw). When this happened, the laptop would not power on. After two years, I am finally sitting down to try and fix this, but before I go buy a new wifi card (the cable was ripped out with the solder connection), I wanted to ask if anyone out there knew whether simply replacing the wifi card will actually solve the problem.
    Seems like it's a pretty strange thing for the laptop to route all power through this tiny card, but I've seen stranger things.

    My WAG is a blown fuse (if there are any in that laptop) or something else that got yanked on and shorted when the cable was ripped out.
