Ram: 2GB vs 2x1GB

Hello,
I have a late 2007 Blackbook with the standard ram (2x512). I am looking to upgrade.
I am not a power user so think that 2GB is good enough instead of maxing out to 4GB.
So my question is whether I should just get one 2GB module to replace one of the current 512 modules? This would give me a total of 2.5GB without the benefits of paired modules.
Or should I get a 2x1GB kit? This would be less total RAM but would be paired.
The prices for the two options are about the same.
Also, any recommendations on brands other than Crucial? Kingston? PNY? Mushkin? Edge?
Thanks in advance!
Ciao,
Rodrigo

Generally speaking, these 'cheaper' RAM sticks will work just fine, but the reason they're cheaper, or 'valueram' or whatever the particular company calls it, is because most of the time they aren't full size.
By that, I mean that yes, they have 2GB worth of RAM chips on there, but they are all not 100% functional, leading to somewhere between 1.5GB-2GB on the stick. Is that really worth saving a couple bucks? You may get a full stick, but you may not.
That's about as funny as the guy who claimed different brands of memory would "fight it out with each other" if used in the same system. As someone in the electronics industry, that's likely the strangest and most incorrect statement I've ever heard here.
If a single bit doesn't pass power-on self test, a MacBook should fail to boot. It doesn't quarantine bad bits or segments like a hard drive. 2GB means 2^31 bytes. 1GB means 2^30 bytes. No more or no less. Memory manufacturers do include back-up rows/columns, but only use them to replace entire rows that fail during initial testing. Functionally this means only the amount of memory listed is accessible by the computer.
Much value style RAM saves with assembly in countries with cheaper manufacturing. Maybe the boards come from second tier suppliers. Sometimes it is almost identical but the manufacturer wants to address different price segments; think GM with almost the same car sold as Chevrolet, Pontiac, Buick, etc. In the large majority of cases, the lifetime warranty policy is the same between a company's standard and value memory products.

No, the two RAM types are different, and the architecture has to specifically be able to interface with it. You can upgrade to 2x2GB of DDR2 memory, for a total of 4GB.

  • Macbook4,1 (2008) RAM 2Gb to 4Gb

I want to extend my Macbook4,1 RAM, 2Gb to 4Gb.
The problem is that it only accepts one 2GB module and should accept both.
What I can do? Do I need to install something?
    Thanks.

    Do both 2Gb modules work?
Ie, install one 1Gb And then one 2Gb... Then swap the 2Gb for the other 2Gb module. Is one not working at all or is it that they won't work together?
Could be that one is faulty. If they both work seperatrly but not together I'd suggest contacting the supplier. I assume you've just bought these?

  • Ram deabte. 2X1GB or 1X2GB w/ 1X512MB?

Okay, so I'm aiming to upgrade my iMac from 1GB (2X512MB).
The question at hand is will 2X1GB be faster then having 1X2GB w/ 1X512MB?
I realize that having 2X1GB would help with he dual-channeling and what not, but would having an extra 512MB help at all? or should I stick with the 2X1GB config?

On the other hand, having an extra 0.5 GB of RAM may make your system run more efficiently (less use of virtual memory) to make up for the small performance loss from not having matched RAM.
Also, if you later want increase your RAM to 4GB (or 3GB for the older iMac), you will already have your first 2GB module. If you get the pair of 1GB modules now and want to go to 4GB later, you will have to replace both modules (or at least one if your max is 3GB).
I emailed OWC tech support to ask the same question. The tech rep advised that going to 3GB (3GB is the max for my model) with mismatched RAM would provide better overall performance than going to 2GB with a matched pair, especially with Leopard. There was probably some salesmanship in the answer (actually, I like and trust the folks at OWC). At the time, OWC was having a sale on a matched pair of Apple OEM system pulls at 2x1GB, and I didn't think I would need 3GB, so I bought that set.
Now that I have Leopard and use VMware Fusion, I wish I had taken the rep's advice and gone to the max. Having another 1GB of RAM (or even 0.5GB) would be just about right.

    Hi,
The following link shows its specs:
       http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&docname=c01968363
You can't upgarde CPU unless changing motherboard (= buying new machine). You can't upgrade RAM to 2Gb because it only supports 1Gb of RAM, max.

please be certain of the answer coz where i work i dont have a store, i need to buy online and shipp .
    thank you in advance.

I missed that! I blame it on not having had my coffee this morning!
    To rams2211,
Crucial certainly makes great RAM - it's what I use in my machine - and you should visit their website. Just to let you know, though, Crucial ships all over the world and have both UK and EU sites, if that helps.
Your specific model can hold up to 16GB of 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMMs, even though the 'official' Apple spec is for 8 GB. Something to do with a long-ago firmware update.
You may also want to visit OWC - their prices are high but they make excellent RAM as well.
    Good luck,

  • DDR RAM 2GB in DC7100

    Hi!
    May I install to DC7100 SFF (PE218ET) BIOS 786C1 v.01.05  DDR RAM 2*2G Micron PC3200R-30331-z?
Maybe I need to upgrade BIOS?

    Hi:
The maximum amount of memory you can install in each memory slot is limited to 1 GB.
A BIOS update won't change that.
You can install 2 x 2 GB in a dc7600 even though the specs say it is not supported, but you can't on a dc7100.

  • Firefox crashing & freezing in "4GB ram+2GB GPU support"

as u can c in d images firefox is freezing, even in 4GB & GPU Config machine. what is solution to dis?

Could you pls re-attach the image.
As for the heavy memory usage, you can try this:
Type "about:memory" in your addressbar and then press the button that says "minimize memory usage". This should free some RAM memory.
    Thanks

  • What to keep? - Dual 1.42 or Dual Sonnet 1.83 - RAM: 4x512MB or 2x1GB

Im looking for some insight - I have both the Apple Dual 1.42 and Dual Sonnet MDX 1.8Ghz Cards for my MDD. Im sure that everyone already knows the specs of these 2 cards. I Use mainly music editing and gaming softare on my machine. Im just trying to figure out what is the fastest card, and is there a solid benchmark program that can give me a definitive answer?
X-bench CPU Avg. scores are around: 77 for the 1.42 and 95 for the 1.8, but Im not sure if i trust X-bench scores, they seem inconsistent. Geekbench scores the 1.42 @ 1200+, and the 1.8 @ 1500+, So now it looks like the the Sonnet card is the fastest..... Now when I run Cinebench, the dual 1.42 always has the lowest numerical score in all tests compaired to the dual 1.8, which im guessing is the L3 in the 1.42 is doing this. What can I trust? What numbers should I be looking at? Is there another Benchmark program that is better?
Also any ideas on the impact in speed by using 4 x 512mb Ram Sticks or 2 x 1 Gb sticks (in dual channel of course)?
    All thoughts welcome, thanks!

    Hi-
Geekbench and Cinebench are completely trustworthy.
The reason the dual 1.42 does better in Cinebench is due to the L3 cache.
In Geekbench, it is due to the higher clock speed of the Sonnet.
Your question as to which is better is only answered with "it depends".
Benchmarks only provide a point of comparison.
Real world use determines the reality.
For gaming, graphics intensive and video applications, the dual 1.42 is the better choice.
For general computer use, without graphics intensive work, the Sonnet is probably better.
There should be no difference in 4x 512MB or 2x 1GB DIMMs.
Unlike PC's, Mac firmware controls the timing and speed of the RAM.
Unlike G5 and Mac Pro machines, matched pairs and full channels make no difference in the G4.
If there were any difference, it wouldn't be one that you would see/feel.....

The Mac App Store version of Aperture requires Mac OS X 10.9 or newer. If you choose to buy an Aperture DVD, it needs to be version 2 or 3 to work in Snow Leopard.

Im a little worried, a lot actually, all im doing is browsing the forums, installed flash and and a few updates and thats it, temps are:
    HD =126F
    CPU =110F
    AMB =76F
    GPU DIODE =171F
    GPU HS =162F
    MEM CONT. =124F
    OPT DRIVE =122F
    POWER SUPPLY 2 =137F
    OPT DRI =1150 RPM
    HARD DRIVE =1099 RPM
    CPU FAN =939RPM
    Havent even started WoW yet!
Please help/advise, is this bad, normal or even good(good - i doubt).
    Thanks

Apple doesn't publish maximum temps however there are safeguards built into the machine, if it senses it's going to overheat it will warn you and then shut down if you ignore the warning. It's VERY rare this ever occurs.

  • 2006 model iMac, is it worth putting in 3 GB over 2GB of RAM?

I currently have 2GB of RAM installed as 2x1GB chips. Is it worth bumping the memory up to 3GB (Apple said I can put in 2x2B chips but it will only see 3GB)? Will I notice any difference or is the 2GB pretty much the sweet spot? Thanks.

    Hi nflp
What does your Activity Monitor tell you after an hour of normal use?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1342?viewlocale=en_US
If your running a lot of big app's at the same time and your running low with 2 GB them yes 3 GB would be better.
Except that ram is cheap and 4 GB would be even better, because your system would access 3.3 GB of ram and maintain the matched ram performance.

  • Why can't I install MacOSX Lion on a Mac Mini with 10.6.8, 2GB RAM, and CPU upgraded to Core2 Duo?

I have an older Intel Mac Mini running fully updated Snow Leopard with an upgraded CPU (Core2 Duo), RAM (2GB), and hard drive.
Supposedly, this should be compatible with Lion, but the App Store refuses to download it.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

It's not the graphics card it is the fact that it is an "upgraded"
system.  Lion, as with any OSX install, is based on the
original computer ID.  If the ID indicated that it was not
a model that was shipped with a CPU that meets the minimum
    requirements it will not install.
The reason I say it is not the graphics card, is that my
Macbook has that card and Lion installed without issue.  It
was, however, equipped with a Core2Duo processor.
