Ram all used, system sluggish, nothing open

So it started after I upgraded to Leopard (clean install) and after my machine has been running for over a day or two, usually after using something flash intensive in safari but not always, Ill come back to my computer in the morning and my wired ram will be over 1.6gb and free will be less then 10mb and my swap file will be in excess of 2gb normally never is larger then 0/64mb, when the system is like that it is very slow until restart, is there anything I can do to fix this?
Programs left running almost always:
iTunes(75% of time)
Mail
iChat
Safari(half of the time)
Of these programs open, which ones open doesn't seem to change the excessive memory usage, and closing them doesn't return the memory.

  • Ram all used up?

So about a month ago, i started noticing that all of my ram was used up. I have 8 GB, and i have like 1% available at all time.
I today decided to format my 256 SSD harddrive, and reinstall Mavericks - and i then installed "Memory Clean" from App Store, and it tells me the same. As soon as i launch the program, it tells me i have about 10-300 MB Memory available.
What can this be? I'd rather try and fix this problem my self, as the nearest authorised Apple store is a very far away.
The computer can actually be used pretty normally, but as soon as i launch Netflix, Youtube videos in full screen etc. it just starts lagging really bad.
Programs open when i took the screenshots were Mail, iTunes, Chrome, Calender and Notes.. Nothing else
It looks like Google Chrome is taking up a ton of activity on my computer - what can it be?
After re-installing my computer, i restored all my Chrome extensions, bookmarks etc.
EDIT:  I just tried closing chrome and it immidieatly gave me more GB. So what do i have to clean out in Chrome? Right now i have Chrome open with hthis forum, and i still got like +3GB available..

From what I read, this is normal for Mav OS. Just because it is using this ram, doesn't mean it isn't free to be allocated somewhere else.
Mav uses ram better than any other Mac OS previous. It does however appear to allways run you low on ram but in fact, its the opposite. It pumps ram into the apps you currently have open becuase it knows you will be swapping back and forth.
Once you open another program, tab in chrome, etc the allocation will be there. Mavericks now has a memory compression feature that will compress the memory occupied by applications that aren't being actively used and give the freed up RAM to the application that needs it the most. The result is a much more responsive system and less memory being dumped to a swap file to the HDD which is what reduces the performance of your Mac.

  • Have to use System disks to open Hard drive

    Hello,
I installed a system on my external hard drive in efforts to solve a mail problem that is now resolved. Now, when I restart the computer, I get a grey screen with some code, some words and an unknown icon on it.
The only way I can restore my regular hard drive is to use the 10.4.8 system disk and hold down the 'C' key when I restart [which is noted on the disk].
How do I get back to my main hard drive back at startup without starting from scratch. Of course, I am on deadline.
    Thanks for your help. V

    Hi Valerie,
first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!
Reboot and hold down the Option-key during boot. This will bring you into the startup manager where you can select from all available systems.

  • Using system variables to open new SCO and then return to same slide in previous SCO

    Hi,
I am working on a eLearning project which will have about 30-40 individual lessons (SCOs), with a common Glossary of terms used in the lessons.  The user needs to be able to click on the Glossary button in any lesson, go to the Glossary and then ideally return to the same slide in the SCO where they clicked on the Glossary button.
I am still learning Advanced Actions but I have seen variables such as curentScene, and currentFrame.  Could these variables be used to create an Advanced Action which would take the user back to the same slide or is there a system variable which could be used to peform this function?
Really need help on this one.  If what I am trying to do is not possible then knowing that would be very useful too as I will not spend anymore time trying to find a solution but will look at other alternatives.
    Thanks,
    Richard

When you reopen a file, all variables are reset... so with Advanced actions this will not be possible AFAIK. Michael Lund, cpguru, has a Save and Load Data widget that allows to pass values of variables between files. Maybe JavaScript could help as well?
I do not know the system variable you are pointing to. There is cpInfoCurrentSlide and cpInfoCurrentFrame but scenes? Perhaps you are using StoryLine and confusing the terminology. In this blog post you can find a link to the complete list with available system variables in Captivate 6:

  • All Apps stopped working nothing open, restart, no change...help

iPad 2 32 gig 3 days old suddenly no apps will open the screen just flashes and they dont any suggestions? Tried checking to make sure nothing is open and have turned it off, n restarted still no change

If it's happening on just the apps that you've downloaded from the App Store, but not the Apple built-in ones, then try downloading any free app from the store (as that appears to reset something) and then re-try them - the free app can then be deleted.
If that doesn't work then you could try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Firefox 4 could not be made to show bookmarks on Vista 64bit. I used system restore to get back to older version. Now Firefox won't open at all even after undoing system restore

I use Vista 64 bit. Was fine with older Version of Firefox (3.6, I believe). Upgraded to Ver. 4. Couldn't access extensive bookmarks file or bookmarks toolbar. Tried all the Firefox help recs and they didn't work. Clicking the top button would give list of toolbars but when I tried to move to bookmarks toolbar the menu changed. Tried going thru tools and options and that didn't work. So decided to use System Restore to get old Firefox version back. Icons remained but program wouldn't open. Tried many ways, including start menu. Old version is still on program control file but only option is to uninstall. So went back to System Restore to get Vers. 4 back and it's not there. What to do?? I can use Google Chrome or Internet Explorer but I want all my 100's of bookmarks back. Thank you.

  • No programs open, but 3GB RAM in use?

I'm running into some problems with the amount of free RAM I have available to me, and it's causing serious performance problems.
I have a new 2011 MBP and I just ran into a situation where I ran out of RAM and the computer became extremely sluggish.  I had 1 Safari window open and XCode open, editing a very small project.  Between these two programs I was using about 600MB of my total 4GB of RAM.  Even though I was only using 600MB of RAM on actual programs, Activity Monitor reported I was out of Memory, and did not say that any programs were using all my memory, only that it was gone.
I decided to quit all open programs, but the problem did not go away.  Sitting there with no open programs, my computer was using 3GB of its total 4GB of RAM in either wired or active state, and another 750MB in inactive state.  I seem to be entirely unable to reclaim that 750MB even when using the "purge" command in Terminal.  Activity monitor claims that kernel_task is using 300MB right now, but doesn't list any other programs using significant amounts of memory, yet I only have 400MB of my 4GB available as "free" memory.
If this were only a reporting error from Activity Monitor, and the RAM really was free and it was just reported incorrectly, then that would be fine.  But the computer behaves as if it's constantly out of memory.  Also, rebooting isn't a great solution because this happens to me all the time, even after reboots.  It only solves the problem for a few minutes.
Any suggestions?  Does this happen to anyone else?  I didn't notice this behavior on my old 2007 MBP (also with 4GB RAM).

The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.
Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently.  It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster.  What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent.  It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.

  • Opening iTunes64Setup.exe on my Windows 7 64-bit system does nothing when running as normal or administrator user. Nothing means no error messages - just nothing.

I'm trying to install iTunes64Setup.exe (10.7.0.21) version on my Windows 7 system and nothing happens with I try to run the exe. If I run as admin, I get the UAC dialog andclick ok - and nothing happens after that. When I downloaded the exe, I went to the Properties for the setup file and clicked the Unblock button so to get around some of the other issues that people reported - no luck running. I tried running Microsoft FixIt for installation issues - http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall/ and no luck after that. In all cases, I try to open it - the mouse cursor spins for less than a second - and nothing happens. I don't see any processes running in Task Manager. I've also tried manually starting the Windows Modular Installer and then running setup. I've tried downloading the exe from another computer to see if it was a bad download and both files do the same thing. The size of the downloaded file is 76.7 MB (80,521,624 bytes). I was able to run the same exe from my other computer running Windows 7 64-bit OS.
    Help!

ok - I setup with a clean boot using msconfig.exe as suggested and disabled all the Microsoft Services and unchecked the Load Startup items, accepted the changes and rebooted. I then tried running the itunes64setup.exe again, and this time - there was a very slight change in behavior - a thin dialog - what looked like a progress indicated displayed on my main display for about .5 sec and then went away - no text in the box. I ran setup again - this time from a USB stick - the little progress indicator stayed up on the screen for about 1.5 sec and I could see a grren bar on the left grow about 1/10th into the progress bar until in disapperared and nothing else happened. What's next?
    Thanks,
    Bill

When I send my ical link to my better half , who sadly, still uses a windows based system- He cannot open the link back to my calendar- any help?

I've been using iCloud since it's inception as "mac.com" or whatever it was called. I've been able to Sync Outlook Exchange Calenars to my iMac, iPhone and iPad. However, I cannot get iCal (when viewed in iCloud) to display Exchange or Google Calender items.
It's odd, all other Mac versions of iCal are happy e.g. iMac, MacBook Air, iPad Air, iPhone etc. But nothing when I login to icloud.com and look at the iCal there.

There are some keyboard commands (shortcuts) you can use instead of having to go to the Apple menu -
Control-Eject          This brings up the Restart-Sleep-Cancel-Shutdown window.
Command-Option-Eject          This puts the machine to sleep.
Command-Control-Eject          This closes all apps and restarts the machine.

you do not need to specify the full path as long as you have the path in your path variable
I think the problem may be that you are using the wrong program name I think it is i_view32 not iview32
