Ram almost full

I have a 5th generation ipod touch 32gb.  The ram is about 75% full, it is running extremely slow, consitantly lagging, and always freezing/ crashing.  The battery is also draining way slower than it should,  any advice?  This is ruining my experience...

Periodically double click the home button and close all the apps in the recently used dock. Then power off and then back on the iPod. This frees up memory. The 4G only has 256 MB of memory.
Next as necessary
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Restore from backup. See:
iOS: How to back up
- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

  • System memory vs disk usage -- why is my hard drive almost full if my system memory is half empty?

I have a white Macbook, 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 2 GB of memory, Mac OS X, version 10.5.8, purchased in 2008. My Mac keeps warning me that my startup disk is almost full, and indeed Activity Monitor shows that my disk usage has minimal free space (2.31 GB). However, the System Memory tab shows that half my space is free.
Does the discrepancy mean that there is lots of space left on my Mac? If not, how can I identify if some sort of error is filling up my memory? Right now, I have a lot of music and documents stored on my laptop, but nothing else, and I would like to be sure it's those two things that are filling up the space.
What is the recommended method for adding more memory to my Mac, if nothing else?

There are two different types of memory in your Mac. There is system memory, more commonly referred to as RAM, and there is disk space. RAM is where the Mac works on data. Disk space is where data is stored for long term storage.
You are in serious danger of causing your Mac to die completely by running it with so little free space on your system drive. It is imperative that you start either deleting or move data off the disk drive. You should have 8 to 10 time as much free space at least at all times for OS X to run will.
A tool that can  with cleaning up your disk drive is OmniDiskSweeper. It will tell you the files and fol,der that are using the most space. That will give you good candidates for deletion or movement.

  • System unusable when RAM is full

There was always this thing that annoyed me: When the RAM is full and the swapping starts the System is getting slow as hell. And by system I mean the GUI: X + DE. I sometimes had the problem that there was an application that ate all the RAM and therefore Linux swapped any other program to hard disk. When I was quick enaugh to kill the application in time before the system got unusable there was the problem that then all application caches were in Swap and doing aything with previously open programs was slow as hell.
Therefore I reduced the swappiness. I thought I rather throw old data out of Ram instead of caching everything to disk would make it better. But it made it worse.
At the moment I compile wine 1.2 with warcraft patches. At the same time I decided to try lightspark - so I started to compile that too - while playing a youtube video. VERY BAD IDEA.
After some time the youtube video stopped playing. There was some stuttering over the next 10 seconds but then the system was completely unusable:
Input from mouse and keyboard lagged with a latency over a minute, login over ssh needs like two minutes to even display the login.
For about ten minutes I could do nothing with the system. It had heavy IO all the time.
That's what it looks like afterwards:
    chris@chrispc ~ % free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
    Mem: 1004 572 431 0 0 47
    -/+ buffers/cache: 524 480
    Swap: 2314 430 1883
If you have less then 2 gb ram and want to try it yourself I can recommend this:
    https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=621025
There is just one question that I have:
Is it possible to not make the Swapping process eat up all ressources?
Can you tell Linux to not swap "important" stuff like X, a Desktop Environment, zsh, sshd AND reserve some ressources to keep this responding?
After so many years of active development of Linux I wonder if somebody has got a solution for this.

I can relate to this issue. Desktop responsiveness has been a problem for years now. It did not use to be like this. Basically, it seems like applications gets swapped to disk as response to the write cache getting big. In my experience, this happens even when you should have enough RAM to deal with it, although those parameters can be tweaked. In addition, the developers have recently acknowledged that the implementation for how processes wait while others are doing I/O is indeed not optimal. KDE usually responds horribly when doing big disk I/O on my system and setting swappiness=0 to stop apps being swapped to disk helps a lot in my case.

this is basically a proper and working way.
Someone suggested to test VM by loading as many apps as possible in short time. This is most ridiculous test I heard of.
To test VM and I/O scheduler performance one need to keep system with high I/O running for long time, not few seconds, If starting many apps at a time kills your system, then obviously you need to work out more basic problems (once I loaded OOorg with 1MB file, amarok, firefox, dolphin, thunderbird, digikam, gimp, k3b and some smaller stuff. This would not get me even to 1GB of used RAM. not to mention that it has nothing to do with the problem which is VM and I/O scheduler).
If you want your system to be responsive, you need to optimize fs with I/O scheduler and specific system calls.
if swappiness=0 works for you, then you have badly configured system and once you get to real I/O use you will see that swapp is used. By definition swappiness will keep apps out of disk only as long as VM thinks that it can handle apps without swapping, it will swap anyway if VM thinks that this is enough. In consequence with swappinness=0 and still free RAM, you may see disk swapping. Not to mention that this will not help with (fast) swap recovery (if needed).
If swappiness setting keeps you happy then by all means use it of course.

  • Disk almost full

How do I fix this? I have this message that keeps popping up that says, "Start up disk almost full." I have reset my cache in safari, deleted as many photos as I could, but it still says the same thing. What should I do? Thanks so much!
Also, I looked at my macintosh HD info and this is what it says:
    Capacity: 148.73 GB
    Available: 3.88 GB
errr.. I really don't have much stuff on my computer.. I have a few movies and tv shows. How can I save those?

Your Mac needs adequate hard drive space to operate normally. How full can a drive be before it's too full? There is no hard and fast rule that says “X” amount or “%” of free drive space is needed. A low amount of RAM requires more drive space for Virtual Memory’s swap files.
Problems from insufficient RAM and free hard disk space are discussed in this link
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/lackofram.html
Here’s some general guidelines for minimum hard drive free space:
    1. As a general rule, your available space should be 5GB as an absolute minimum as it generally requires that much free space to perform an Archive and Install of Mac OS X and still preserve some free space for VM swap files.
    2. Some say that your hard drive should have at least 5% of it's capacity available for use. Still others say 10% to 15%. If you routinely process complex graphics and videos, even more space is required.
Look at these links about freeing up more space.

  • Disk I/O meter jumps to almost full ...

Is it normal that the *Disk I/O Meter* in Logic 8.0.2 is jumping to almost full in a 1 or 2 second rythm while recording a track? I have a new MacBook Pro 2.8 Ghz with 4 GB of Ram. I am using the LaCie SATA II ExpressCard 34 to record on an external SATA HD. It is working and I don't notice any distortion and stuff, but the meter is confusing me. CPU usage is low. Working-buffer is 'big'. And the soundcard buffer is at 1024 (I monitor through my soundcard).

    Hi,
yes, the same here on G5 PPC: it is normal and it is not related with sample buffer.

  • "Startup Disk Almost Full" But 190gb Free?

So I recently downloaded a program (MCMap Live) to make an image of my Minecraft world.
I ran it the first time and it took up all my RAM like expected, but gave me issues.
So I try to run it again without any other programs besides Finder running and my Mac started puking out this error that my startup disk was almost full and I had to kill some apps or delete files.
I open Finder and it tells me I have over 190gb of free space...
I ignored the warning and after the program was finished and I restarted, my airport card stopped working. So I restart again.
The airport card turns back on, but now I can't run any intensive programs because that error about my startup disk keeps coming back and shutting them down.
Does anyone know what is going on and how to fix it?

  • Startup Disk Almost Full (but it isn't!)

    Hello all,
I've had a problem recently with my iBook G4 where I get a warning that my 'start up disk is almost full' every hour or so. The thing is, when I look at the Finder (or the Activity Monitor) it shows I have almost 8 gigs of hard drive free (and usually 200 plus megs of memory.)
I recently was advised that I needed more RAM, as the person thought maybe system resources were taking up my extra memory, so I put in 512. This seemed to make the problem less frequent, but has not stopped it (it was happening multiple times an hour prior to the memory upgrade.) Incidentally, I do keep my firmware updated.
Also, for what it's worth, I try to keep as few applications open as possible--this will happen when I am only running iTunes and Safari.
I suppose it's not the end of the world to have the warning pop up all the time, but it is pretty irritating.
    All suggestions welcome.
    Thanks,
    Ben

    Hey Ben!
What size hard drive is inside your iBook?
It's recommended to have 10% free space at minimum and 25% for "optimal" performance.

  • Getting "Your Startup disk is almost full" on 1st use of new Macbook Pro

This is a brand new 13" Macbook Pro with a 320 GB drive and 2 GB Ram.
As a test of the new machine, I just captured video from a video camera into iMovie - the uploaded file used 19 GB - I did a couple other tests that created files of just under 2GB each, and went to export the 19GB file, which would have used another 19 GB, when I got the "... almost full" message. Finder reported I had around 50GB free from the original 320 GB drive, which didn't make any sense - considering all my activities today should have taken up around 50 GB of space.
I loaded WhatSize on the machine, and proceeded to find out what's going on, and "WhatSize" reported I have 250 GB free (more like what I'd expect). I checked the Finder, and it now says 250 GB free - I know Apple has been having other issues with the 500 GB and 320 GB drives - has anyone seen the problem I'm having??

Yeah, it's big, but given the size of what you were dealing with, it's not astronomical. It could have been invisible (especially given that it was temporary), so it would not show up in finder... or it could have been erased before you started hunting it down.

  • Computer says disk is almost full, but I have 14 GB free

    iBook G4 1.33
    OS 10.5.8
    1.5 GB of ram
    40 gig hard drive
I  get a message that says that the disk is almost full.  In disk utility, it states that 36 out of 37 gb of hard drive space has been used.  However when I open the finder window after clicking on the hard drive (the first level showing applications, library, system, users),  it only adds up to about 23 gb of space being used once I select calculate all sizes.  It doesn't show me the other 13 gigabites that would add up to 36.
I don't have the 10.5 CD's since I bought this off of ebay preloaded with the os.
I've already repaired drive holding the shift key upon startup.  I've ran cocktail pilot mode to run scripts, repair permissions, empty cache, etc...I turned on invisible items using cocktail to see if I can find the extra gigabites to no avail.
It is not connected to the USB external drive.
    File Vault is off.
    Any other suggestions.

Seems there's some hidden File/Folder on the drive.
Let's try another way, get Find Any File...
    http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/
Set it up File Size is greater than 3gb, hold Option key when selecting Find to Find all.
    Then try EasyFind...
    http://www.devon-technologies.com/download/
Near the bottom of the page.
Search your whole drive for Files Only, Case Insensitive, Include Package contes, include hidden for something like just a dot/period . then sort on Size.

  • HT3680 my startup disk is almost full

i  clean  most  of  my  disck  but  my  mac still keep  telling  me  that my  disk  is  almost  full ,what  should  i  do it ?

Empty the trash in the Dock as well as iPhoto’s trash!
Open up your application folder & go through all your apps.  Trash all the apps you no longer want and/or use.
An easier way to do this is to open the Application folder in list view & press the Command+j keys.
In the the dialog that appears, click the "This Window Only" button & the "Calculate All Sizes" check box.
Wait a bit until your file & folder sizes have all been calculated, then click the "Size" column to sort your apps from the fattest to the most anorexic.
Get rid of all your photo files you don't want and/or need.  Same goes for those pics off the websites you downloaded (gifs, jpegs, etc.).  Or transfer/move them all to a photo/movie storage site like ImageShack and Photobucket, 2 of the most popular  FREE  storage sites.
Get rid of all your video & music files you no longer view and/or listen too.  Especially, if you already have the actual CD/DVDs or you can later redownload from a website.  Or transfer them all to a FREE video/movies and/or music storage site.
Use Spotlight to make sure you got rid of everything.  You can even trash directly from Spotlight!  Better yet, download this FREE software called Find File.  This app puts Spotlight to shame (works w/Mountain Lion).
Drag what you don't want and/or need to the trash.  Better yet, download this neat little shareware app *demo* called AppZapper.  It basically does all the work for you by not only trashing the apps but the apps preference files, caches & all its associated files.
Another software that does the above is AppDelete.  Best of all this software is free!
Burn what you want and/or need onto CDs or DVDs. Not everyone has the  luxury of purchasing an external HD and/or the system requirements for iCloud to store their "stuff.”
Dropbox is a free storage utility to check out.
You can check with your ISP to see if they offer *free* storage space.  Most if not all do now-a-days.   There are thousands if not millions of *free* storage facilities on the web also.  Use your favorite search engine to search them out as they come in different storage sizes to fit your needs & wants.
    Check for duplicate fonts.
    Applications>Font Book
    Select “All Fonts”
If you see any “black dots” next to any fonts this mean you have duplicates and/or multiple versions of these fonts.
    To clean this up, select a “black dotted” font or the Apple + *click* to select multiple dotted fonts;
    Edit>Resolve>Duplicates.
What the above does is turns off the duplicates & multiple version fonts.  Not delete them.
More than likely the “extras” were installed by other programs and/or other users.
    Clear out font caches
Use FontNuke.  It does all the work for you.  And, best of all it’s *FREE*.
    Printer Drivers
Get rid of all the printer drivers you don’t need & use except the ones for your *current* printer(s)/scanner(s).
    HD>Library>Printers Folder
If you accidently threw something out that you needed for your printer/scanner it can be easily obtained from the manufacturer’s website and/or from the CD that came w/the printer/scanner.
    Garage Band
Has about 1GB of loops stored.  Get rid of some some them.  You surely don’t use, like and/or need them all.
    HD>Library>Audio/Apple Loops>Apple>Apple Loops For GarageBand
Or just get rid of the Garage Band app altogether if you don’t use it.
    Get rid of extra languages
Strip your computer down to your “native” tongue.
You can do this with a *FREE* utility called Monolingual.  Another app that apparently does all the work for you.  I’ve never used it.  However, a lot of users here swear by & recommend it highly.
However, there is a warning for *native English speakers*. Make sure you keep BOTH English and English (United States).

  • Memory almost full issue

My memory is almost full and I regularly perform disk clean-up and defragments.  I also deleted any unused programs and performed a shadow copy (reduced to 500MB).
I only have 23 GB left.  How can I greatly increase the capacity of C: without having to do a format/restore?

One quick thing you can do is to limit how much space System Restore will use. See this:
    http://lifehacker.com/254365/vista-tip--reduce-system-restore-disk-usage
By default it is taking up 15% of your drive and it is probably full. Back it off to a couple gigs as outlined in the link above.
You can also reduce the size of the swap file. Modern computers with 4 or more gigs of RAM do not need to have a swap file the same size as memory. You can cut the swap file in half or even down to a gig.
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/change-virtual-memory-size#1TC=windows-7
Set the minimum and maximum swap (paging file) size the same-say 1024 mb or 2048 mb which is plenty. It is an old performance trick that is still worth doing.
Other than that, you have to remove actual data files particularly videos which can take up a lot of room.

  • Startup Disc Almost Full?!

I just received a notification that my startup disc is almost full. I have appx. 5 gb of memory used up on my macbook pro; why am I getting this notification. I even checked my finder and it says I still have close to 160 GB of memory available. My computer recently crashed due to a hard drive malfunction and was under the impression that they completely replaced the drive. Is there a chance they didn't and all that information is still on it? If thats the case, why would it warn me my disc is almost full but my finder still says I have all this memory left.
    <Post Relocated by Host>

When I say I used up 5GB of hard drive I meant on top of the standard programs that come with the operating system. I'm not really sure my model MBP and ram but its a standard Macbook Pro with no customization. The recent work was done at my local Apple store and I am almost sure they said they completely replaced the drive, due to a "malfunction" and could not retrieve any previous information on my drive. I was downloading legal music torrents when I got the prompt, but I'm begging to think its not really not worth sweating because I have not got the prompt again and according to Disc Inventory X I have over 150GB of free space still. Still curious however as to why I would get a warning that my startup disc is almost full...

In addition, check Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.

  • Startup Disk almost full. - Huge Yellow Other bar

I am beginning to lose all hope that I am actually going to get this problem fixed. I have had this problem for months now. Basically I keep getting a message pop up saying my startup disk is almost full. However all i have on my laptop is pictures! I don't understand. is 3,217 a lot of pictures? My Macbook has 4gb memory... is this just too small??? Do I need to buy an external hardrive? But what I really don't understand is, the 'other' bar is huge! It is 59.38GB. What is it!? How can I fix this?? Please don't say empty the recycle bin becasue I have lost count of the number of times I have done this. The main question I have is, is it a virus??? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The 4GB of memory is the RAM not the storage on your hard drive. There is nothing there that would show up in where you are refering to.
First have you emptied the iPhoto trash? iPhoto has it's own trash, in the left side bar. You can open that then use COMMAND + A to select all that is there, then SHIFT + COMMAND + DELETE to send it to the regular trash then delete that. Also you can delete any downloads in your download folder, get rid of any movies you don't need any longer.
See the following links to help you clean up some space, and some explainations as well, some may mention different OS X's, but the info will hold true pretty much across the board.
