Ram and Memory

Hi I was wondering if I upgrade my memory do I need to upgrade the ram too? For example if I upgrade my memory from 80 to 100 GB do I have to upgrade my ram from 1 to 2 gb's? Will there be an repercussions? Thanks

Just to help explain a little more... When you say "upgrade my memory from 80 to 100 GB" what you are actually saying is "upgrade your hard drive from 80 to 100 GB". It's not very uncommon for people to confuse the two. RAM and memory are actually the same thing (RAM=Random Access Memory). Think of it this way... the RAM is the computers memory... just like a persons memory. If someone asks you a question, and you know the answer, you can respond instantly. Think of your hard drive as storage... or like a library. If someone asks you a question, and you don't know the answer... you may have to look it up... which would take much more time than if you just knew the answer. Increasing your RAM (memory) in your computer will almost always give you a bigger performance boost than increasing your hard drive size (up to a certain point). There is no harm in upgrading one and not the other. A MacBook should run fine with 1GB of memory. Depending on what you use it for, 2GB certainly won't hurt.
My concern would be that it sounds like you may not be too familiar with computers. While replacing a hard drive in a MacBook is very easy, you should consider things like backing up any information you may currently have on your drive because you will need to either make a copy of your current drive and copy it on to your new drive... or do a clean install of OS X on your new drive and just copy over your data.
It's possible that you don't have a MacBook yet and are just asking because you plan on getting one and you're not sure if you get the larger hard drive, do you need to get more memory. If that's the case, feel free up upgrade to either. Like I said, 1 GB for a MacBook is generally fine. A larger hard drive is nice to have if you plan to install lots of programs, music, videos, etc... or if your work requires lots of storage.

  • Newbie Question!  Upgrading Ram and Memory in Macbook Pro 2.2 Ghz

    Hi!
I am a new Mac user.  I started out as an apple user with my iphone 3 years ago and have recently went to Macbook and will never go back to PC.  Anyway,
I need to upgrade my RAM from 2 to 4 GB.
    1.  What is the best or better RAM to use?  Crucial?
    2.  Please advise on steps to do so.
Also, I need to upgrade my hard drive memory as I have 150 GB used and only 9 GB free per Istat.
    1.  Am I able to upgrade the memory for this?
    Thank You any and all!!

Is this the right hard drive?  Decent hard drive?

  • More RAM or memory needed to run Windows-- AutoCAD 2010 on my mac?

    Hi all,
I have researched for days and have still not been able to find an answer, last time I was here I was thoroughly impressed with the help, so I'm back!
I have a MacBook 5,1, basic model 2 Ghz, 2GB, 65.7 GB free on my hard drive. I run parallels to use Windows XP to use AutoCAD 2010. I borrowed a friends Mac, a larger "better" model and was instantly jealous at the speed his computer was able to do the same tasks my computer takes when I have Windows/AutoCAD running.
So my question is.. would more RAM help with the speed and overall function of my computer? Would more memory help? A combo of both? Also where is a reliable place to purchase what I may need? The best (and most cost effective) advice for my computer would be GREATLY appreciated!
oh, would upgrading to Snow Leopard help as well? I am currently running just Leopard as far as I can tell (10.5.8). Also would this require me to reinstall all programs on my computer?
    Thanks in advance,
    Laura

The short answer to your question is a resounding YES! RAM and memory are the same thing, but having more of that would most definitely improve your performance at almost everything.
Upgrading to SL may help a little, but not nearly as much as more RAM. I'm not positive, but I think that model maxes out at 4GB, so that should be your goal. If it's 8GB, even better. The more RAM you have, the better things will be with a memory hungry app like AutoCAD.

  • P7N SLI Platinum Unstable with over 2GB ram and/or dual channel memory on.

Hello need some help or to report something to MSI regarding blue screens, freezes when booting Vista 64 (SP1 + all fixes installed) with more then 2GB ram.  Single channel mode works (either 1 stick of 2 GB or 3 sticks of 2GB) and is rock stable.  Booting with 2 x 2 or 4 x 2 yields instability and blue screens.
I read over Microsoft's hotfix KB929777 however it appears this patch was applied during SP1. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929777 - when I attempted to apply this hotfix I got the message this update does not apply to your system.
Memory tested in other gaming system using 4 sticks of G.Skill 1066 DDR2 ram and still have the same issues.  Other forums like Evga.com, Tom's hardware and 411overkill.com tend to suggest some problem with this new bios version 2.0, written by Nvidia.  Some others mention possibly an Nvidia nforce driver issue.
Therefore, under duress during testing - with 1 stick or 3 sticks of ram, all tests perfect and passes all stability tests, good marks in Sandra, plays any game.  With 2 or 4 sticks of ram, very unstable won't stay up but for seconds.
Any ideas?  (Tested 7 ways until Sunday!)
My other rig, rocks solid and stable with Vista 64....  It's the Evga new mainboard 780i with triple SLI (132-CK-NF78-A1), 8gb of Gskill 1066ddr2, MSI 8800GT (x2 sli mode) Q6600 @ 3.2 ghz - Raid 0 on dual WD caviar 640 gb/sata 3.0gb/sec.  Seasonic 700w p/s.  8gb of memory and not a hiccup.  Ram 2.0 volts, cpu @ 1.36v.  Will handle the memory from both systems with out fault.
Considering I can swap memory back and forth and confirm it's not the sticks, swap graphics boards (own 3 of them!) and rule out that....
    Fyi.  Any help is appreciated!

Dump question, but have you pickup the correct update e.g. for 64bit? ==> http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=91672C7C-614B-404C-850C-377541E93C18&displaylang=en
"This comes inside SP1 for vista 64, as noted with my other system during the build. "
    Better double check it.
Install all four memory sticks and do a memory check with >>Memtest86<< 1st, ensure that no error(s) will comes during testing.
    Also how about that?:
Quote from: BOSSKILLER on 07-April-08, 23:55:36
Remove your OC then see how its goes.
"When the system boots in single channel mode (only 2 or 6gb of ram meaning 1 or 3 sticks installed into the 4 slots) its' rock stable.  When it boots into dual channel mode (2 x 2 sticks or 2 x 4 sticks) extemely unstable. "
That means, timings are too tight, or they need a bit more vcore help, or some of the memory stick has failure.
    "MSI P7N SLI Platinum - MS-7380 - Bios 2.0 on Vista Ultimate 64-bit - all updated."
That BIOS is not for your board, you should use 1.xx

  • Which Apple MacBook Pro has the most RAM and HDD memory?

I would like to know this because I plan on buying a MacBook Pro and I just want to make sure I'm buying the one with the most RAM and HDD memory and not some other one. Why do I need specifically this? Because I'm a gamer; I like playing games. I'm a watcher too; I like watching movies. Last but not least, I would like to sync my iPhone to a device that's from the same company. I don't know why, but I guess it's because I don't like uncoordination, or something like that. In short, I don't believe in "clashing". Even electronics.

The Hardware In Any Mac is Exactly the same as used in Any PC of like model year and included hardware. i7 being faster then an i5 CPU.
Apple uses the same exact Intel CPUs and Chipsets that all other computer use manfacturer today. There is No difference.
Ogelthorpe is comppletely correct that Windows, by nature of the OS, is better for running games and the hardware it comes on, by nature of the way they are manufactured even though it is the same hardware as in a Mac, is better for gaming because of the way they are cooled and the overall case design. More air vents and better air movement across the parts that get hot while gaming.
Mac notebooks on the other hand don't cool as well by nature of the air intake and exhaust systems. Both air intake and exhaust are at the screen hinge and the fans are designed to be quieter then on most Windows PC notebooks. Even if Windows is installed on Mac that Mac will run hotter then a PC with the same exact hardware configurations. This is a fact and experienced by many Mac users. Including myself.
Mac fans run all the time. From the second you start them up to the second they shut down completely. I personally don't know of any Windows PC notebook that do that. My Dell E6420 with the exact same CPU and more RAM, 16GBs in the Dell and 8 in my Mac, with the Dell having 2 drives, one a SSD the other a Spinner in the media bay, and the Mac having only one Seagate XT series in the main bay the Dell fans rarely come on unless I am taxing the system in some way. They are not on continuously and certainly not when I turn the system on. So Apple has designed the Mac to run the fans continuously to try and keep the system cool from the first power on.
So your statement is completely false. But it is what most people think even though it is unfounded.

This is not true. The hardware is simply better on a Mac. Even when running Windows on a Mac, you'll have a far better experience than on a PC..

Hi, I have bought macbook pro a year back and it has 4 GB RAM and its mid 2012 model can u tell me whether if i give the macbook for upgradation of memory will they do it and what would be the cost.

You need to take your MacBook Pro to your Apple store genius bar and check that they will do the upgrade for you...price for 4 GB memory used to be $200 but you will have to check with them for the current cost.
You can also check with OWC, http://www.macsales.com and see what their cost is and decide if you want to do it yourself.  Cost will be about half of that at the Apple store.

  • LOOOONG delays processing commands, spinning wheels for minutes on end despite plenty of RAM and solid-state memory.

This seems to have coincided with installing Yosemite, had no problems with Mavericks. Have read that it can happen with older or low-spec Macs, but this is a top of the line MacBook Pro Retina, 13", late 2013, 2.8 GHz Intel core i5, 8Gb RAM, 12% memory free. Long delays before obeying commands. I am so sick of that spinning wheel!

Have tried the various things suggested, but it is still lagging intermittently, sometimes hanging fire for a couple of minutes while the wheel spins. Have run Etrecheck and this is the report:

  • MacPro with10.7.3. running a Python script in terminal I see a : "There is no more application memory available on your startup disk". Python uses 10G of 16G RAM and  VM =238G with 1TB free. Log: macx-swapon FAILED - 12. It only happens with larger inputs

On my MacPro with10.7.3. while running a Python script in terminal, after a while, in several hours actually,  I see a system message for the Terminal app: "There is no more application memory available on your startup disk". Both RAM and VM appear to be fine at this point, i.e. Python uses only 10G of 16G RAM and  VM =238G with ~1TB free. Log reads: " macx-swapon FAILED - 12" multiple times. Furthermore, other terminal windows can be opened and commands run there. It only happens with larger inputs (text files), but with inputs that are about half the size everything runs smoothly.  So the issue must be the memory indeed, but where to look for the problem/fix?

    http://liulab.dfci.harvard.edu/MACS/README.html
    Have you tried with the --diag flag for diagnostics? Or changing verbose to 3 to show debug messages? Clearly one of three things is happening;
    1. You ARE running out of disk space, but once it errors out the space is reclaimed if the output file is deleted on error. When it fails, does your output have the content generated up to the point of termination?
    2. The application (Terminal) is allocated memory that you are exceeding
    3. The task within Terminal is allocated memory that you are exceeding
I don't know anything about what this does but is there a way to maybe run a smaller test run of it? Something that takes 10 minutes? Just to see if it works.

  • How to find the current CPU and Memory (RAM) allocation for OMS and Reposit

    Hi There,
How do I check the CPU and memory (RAM) allocation for the OMS and the Repository database? I'm following the "Oracle Enterprise Manager Grid Control Installation and Configuration Guide 10g Release 5 (10.2.0.5.0)" documentation and it says to ensure the following:

  • Has anyone had problems with Domayne using generic third party RAM for memory upgrades? My RAM is now faulty and had to be removed, but Apple wont replace it under Apple Care because its not a genuine component?

The computer was purchased in the knowledge that all components and hardware were genuine and subsequently covered by the Apple Care warranty.
Domayne replaced the genuine components (8GB stick) with generic components (2x 16GB sticks) to save money and boost margin.
Apple should not allow this misleading, profiteering behaivour. This behaviour is brand damaging. Apple must maintain more control over their supply chain.
Has anyone had any expirenece with this problem?
Has anyone made Domayne or other third party resellers acountable for this misleading behaviour?
    Thank you.

Stick with Brand name RAM and reputable distributors.  Mac is finicky about low quality RAM
    Try OWC http://www.macsales.com/
    Crucial http://www.crucial.com/
Most RAM comes with Lifetime guarenntee so return it where you got it.

  • Problem with scanning and memory usage

I'm running PS CS3 on Vista Home Premium, 1.86Ghz Intel core 2 processor, and 4GB RAM.
I realise Vista only sees 3.3GB of this RAM, and I know Vista uses about 1GB all the time.
    Question:
While running PS, and only PS, with no files open, I have 2GB of RAM, why will PS not let me scan a file that it says will take up 300Mb?
200Mb is about the limit that it will let me scan, but even then, the actual end product ends up being less than 100Mb. (around 70mb in most cases)I'm using a Dell AIO A920, latest drivers etc, and PS is set to use all avaliable RAM.
Not only will it not let me scan, once a file I've opened has used up "x" amount of RAM, even if I then close that file, "x" amount of RAM will STILL be unavaliable. This means if I scan something, I have to save it, close PS, then open it again before I can scan anything else.
Surely this isn't normal. Or am I being stupid and missing something obvious?
I've also monitored the memory usage during scanning using task manager and various other things, it hardly goes up at all, then shoots up to 70-80% once the 70ishMb file is loaded. Something is up because if that were true, I'd actually only have 1Gb of RAM, and running Vista would be nearly impossible.
It's not a Vista thing either as I had this problem when I had XP. In fact it was worse then, I could hardly scan anything, had to be very low resolution.
Thanks in advance for any help

55%, it's still 1.6Gb....there shouldn't be a problem scanning something that it says will take up 300Mb, then actually only takes up 70Mb.
And not wrong, it obviously isn't releasing the memory when other applications need it because it doesn't, I have to close PS before it will release it. Yes, it probably is supposed to release it, but it isn't.
Thank you for your answer (even if it did appear to me to be a bit rude/shouty, perhaps something more polite than "Wrong!" next time) but I'm sitting at my computer, and I can see what is using how much memory and when, you can't.

    Hi Chefjeegar
Yes that screwdriver kit has the #00 phillips screwdriver that you need to access the RAM and hard drive. You'll also need the Torx driver to change the hard drive. http://www.amazon.co.uk/LINDY-Computer-Technician-Precision-Torx/dp/B0000934GO/r ef=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1348072554&sr=1-1
For a good explanation about RAM look at the page on OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/MacBook/DDR2/
In the UK Amazon or eBay might be your best bet for cheap RAM but read the description and reviews carefully. For a little more expensive but with a better warranty is Crucial UK http://www.crucial.com/uk/
A good resource for working on your MacBook is ifixit.com http://www.ifixit.com/Device/MacBook_Core_2_Duo
Is your external hard drive formatted for Mac? To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application Carbon Copy Cloner. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.bombich.com/index.html Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Put the new drive in your MacBook, then format and partition the new drive. Then use Carbon Copy Cloner to transfer your OS back to the new drive.
Yes, you can put an SSD in the MacBook.

About OS X Memory Management and Usage
Reading system memory usage in Activity Monitor
Memory Management in Mac OS X
Performance Guidelines- Memory Management in Mac OS X
A detailed look at memory usage in OS X
Understanding top output in the Terminal
The amount of available RAM for applications is the sum of Free RAM and Inactive RAM. This will change as applications are opened and closed or change from active to inactive status. The Swap figure represents an estimate of the total amount of swap space required for VM if used, but does not necessarily indicate the actual size of the existing swap file. If you are really in need of more RAM that would be indicated by how frequently the system uses VM. If you open the Terminal and run the top command at the prompt you will find information reported on Pageins () and Pageouts (). Pageouts () is the important figure. If the value in the parentheses is 0 (zero) then OS X is not making instantaneous use of VM which means you have adequate physical RAM for the system with the applications you have loaded. If the figure in parentheses is running positive and your hard drive is constantly being used (thrashing) then you need more physical RAM.

  • What is the difference between Azure RemoteApp Basic vs Standard Plans in terms of compute cores and memory?

So our customer has asked us to compare compare Amazon Workspace and Azure RemoteApp offerings for them to choose from. While looking at Amazon Workspace, it clealy defines bundles with specific CPU cores, memory and user storage. However, Azure RemoteApp
only specifies user storage and vaguely compares its basic vs. standard plans in terms of "task worker" vs. "information worker"
I tried looking up its documentation but couldn't find specific CPU cores that are dedicated per user in basic vs. standard plans. I have following questions:
Can anyone point me in the right direction or help understand how many CPU cores and memory are dedicated (or shared) per user in each plan?
Our customer would most likely need a "custom" image for their custom apps. Is it possible for us to choose specific CPU cores and memory for the users to be able to run their apps in azure remoteapp?
In case i am misunderstanding the basic difference between AWS workspace and Azure RemoteApp, i'd appreciate some help in understanding it as well.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
With Azure RemoteApp users see just the applications themselves, and the applications appear to be running on their local machine similar to other programs.  With Workspaces users connect to a full desktop and launch applications within that.
    1. Azure RemoteApp currently uses size A3 Virtual Machines, which have 4 vCPUs and 7GB RAM.  Under Basic each VM can have a maximum of 16 users using it whereas under Standard each VM is limited to 10 users.  The amount of CPU available
to a user depends on what the current demands are on the CPU at that moment from other users and system processes that may be on the server.
For example, say a user is logged on to a VM with 3 other users and the other users are idle (not consuming any CPU).  At that moment the user could use all 4 vCPUs if a program they are running needed to.  If a few moments later
the other 3 users all needed lots of CPU as well, then the first user would only have approximately 1 vCPU for their use.  The process is dynamic and seeks to give each user their fair share of available CPU when there are multiple users demanding CPU.
Under the Standard plan a user will receive approximately a minimum of .4 vCPU assuming that the VM has the maximum number of users logged on and that all users are using as much CPU as possible at a given moment.  Under the Basic plan the approximate
    minimum would be .25 vCPU.
    2. You cannot choose the specific number of cores and memory.  What you can do is choose the Azure RemoteApp billing plan, which affects the user density of each VM as described above.  If you need a lower density than Standard you
    may contact support.
