Ram and possible HDD Upgrading Under Apple Care

Hi there, when I bought my macbook pro it came with the standard HDD and 4gigs of ram.  I think that the time has come to upgrade it to 8gigs of ram and here are the modules I plan to use [url]http://www.ebuyer.com/191220-corsair-8gb-2x4gb-ddr3-1333mhz-laptop-memory-kit-so -dimm-cmso8gx3m2a1333c9[url]
My question is IF I upgrade these parts, will it void my 3 years apple care extended warranty.  I know that the parts I install will not be covered due to them not being apple parts, but Will it void the whole machine if I open it my self ?
Many Thanks
Sam

Installing additional RAM will not void your warranty. Upgrading the hard drive is another matter altogether.
Generally, if you cause any damage resulting from your work, then your warranty will not cover that damage. However, Apple repair centers may consider a drive replacement as causing any damage in order to void your warranty entirely. So, you do take a little risk when you replace a drive.
However, you can find tutorials, hard drives, and RAM at OWC. This should make such work pretty straight forward. They can also provide the needed tools.

  • 3rd party RAM covered under Apple Care?

    hey all,
i just got a new MacBook and am planning on upping the RAM to 2 Gigs. I know that if you buy the RAM from Apple and you have the Apple Care Protection Plan on your computer, the Apple RAM you install is also covered for the duration of the plan. I have Apple Care for my new MacBook and i'm wondering if 3rd party RAM would be covered under AppleCare of it it HAS to be Apple RAM. Is it worth the extra roughly $400 to have 2 Gigs from Apple and have it covered under Apple Care? If not, what are some recommendations for reliable 3rd party RAM? is there a certain brand that is hands down the best? thanx very much!
    David

    David,
AppleCare only covers hardware that you purchase from Apple. If you have problems with your RAM later on, that's between you and the company you bought it from.
Thus, if you buy third-party RAM, it's important to buy a good product from a reputable company (and to keep the RAM that came with your machine, in case you ever have to return the machine to the state it was in when you bought it from Apple, to return it to Apple for service should they request that.)
Only you can decide for yourself whether it's worth it to you.
I decided that it was not worth the extra money to buy RAM from Apple, and bought and installed 2GB of RAM on my own. It was easy, as long as you follow the directions from Apple's MacBook support site (there are PDF downloads explaining how to do maintenance on your MacBook, and RAM is considered a user-replaceable part.)
I have had a very good experience buying and installing third-party MacBook RAM from Small Dog Electronics; others on this forum have recommended OtherWorld Computing (OWC.)
Patriot and Crucial also seem to be well thought-of memory vendors.

  • Has anyone had problems with Domayne using generic third party RAM for memory upgrades? My RAM is now faulty and had to be removed, but Apple wont replace it under Apple Care because its not a genuine component?

The computer was purchased in the knowledge that all components and hardware were genuine and subsequently covered by the Apple Care warranty.
Domayne replaced the genuine components (8GB stick) with generic components (2x 16GB sticks) to save money and boost margin.
Apple should not allow this misleading, profiteering behaivour. This behaviour is brand damaging. Apple must maintain more control over their supply chain.
Has anyone had any expirenece with this problem?
Has anyone made Domayne or other third party resellers acountable for this misleading behaviour?
    Thank you.

Stick with Brand name RAM and reputable distributors.  Mac is finicky about low quality RAM
    Try OWC http://www.macsales.com/
    Crucial http://www.crucial.com/
Most RAM comes with Lifetime guarenntee so return it where you got it.

Please be advised that we are individual users just like you.  I understand and appreciate that you use your MBP in a vocational environment and evidently it is critical for you to have a functioning MBP at all times.  Unlike some car dealers, Apple does not have a 'loaner' program.
You may be able to talk the local Apple store to lend you one, but they are under no obligation to do so.  As BobTHeFisherman suggests, the only reasonable solution for the current situation and possible future ones, is to have a backup MBP, ready to be used if the primary one fails.
Even if you got a 'loaner', I question the practicality of setting it up and transferring data in a timely manner that would enable it to be used for your job.  The quick and temporary solution to you situation is to purchase an external DVD drive that can substitute for the internal one with the entrenched CD.  This should permit you to continue your work uninterrupted with all functions of your MBP still at your disposal.
    Ciao.

  • Will defective X1900XT be replaced by 8800GT for free under Apple Care?

Since the rev.1 X1900XTs are known defective(mine:http://fotologue.jp/warrenk/), will it be possible we're able to choose X1900XT or 8800GT as a free-of-charge replacement under Apple Care warranty?
Apple should let it happen asap because a $399 X1900XT "downgrading" to a $279 8800GT shouldn't be a financial loss to Apple, right? Or can someone tell why they probably won't?
    Thanks.

no they usually swap part for identical part.
if they dont have any available or none are on backorder, they may be able to make exceptions either for cards for that generation.
Im not entirely sure how the financial situation affects their inventory or their overall ability to do it, itd make sense to go with the newer adaptable card then one that is KNOWN to cause issues.
Id suggest actually, maybe being in persistent about it and showcase some of the issues with the x1900 and yours is experiencing the same thing.
    it doesnt hurt to try

  • Will i get new version of OS if i am still under apple care?

    Hi,
Having the new OS released n Fall, will i be eligible to get the latest version of OS for free if i am still covered under Apple care plan?
    Regards,
    Ravi

    No
AppleCare only provides 3 years of support and hardware warranty from factory defects.
You'll have to purchase upgrades for OS X much like you will for your third party software.

Is there an "APPLE STORE" in India or you just went in a reseller store?
There is a replacement program for sleep/wake button for free. Just look for an Apple Store and make a reservation at Genius Bar.
I have an iPhone 5, bought in Dubai U.A.E.
It is a US model (model A1428) which is different of the model use here in Italy/Europe
My serial number is qualified for battery replacement program.
I thought the Apple Store wouldn't repair my phone because I bought it from another country , a different model and it is already out of warranty.
The Apple store's staff just checked if my iPhone's serial number is eligible for the program and he replaced the battery for free today.

  • Is the power adapter covered under Apple Care?

I wrap the cord on my power adapter about twice per day going between home, school, and work. Consequently, the power cord has begun to fray where it comes out of the white power supply. Is a replacement power supply covered under Apple Care?

    Dorianj,
I would be interested to hear what Apple says regarding warranty coverage for your power supply. I had a slight, but annoying, problem with my Powerbook G4 adapter where the two-pronged wall adapter would not stay rigidly straight in the wall socket. Result was that it would slide out of the wall socket and lose its connection. I called Apple under my extended Applecare warrantly and they said that a replacement (only $10 anyway, but still...) was not covered as the problem was related to my use and handling. The tech on the phone conceded that if I had said that the adapter wasn't working it could have been replaced under the warranty. Of course he said he couldn't change the information on my "case" once that was entered.
Hope this experience is hellpful and please post back on your results.

  • Hello there I have Mac Pro I broked my secreen but it still under apple care so the going to fix it or change it ?

    hello there
I have Mac Pro I broced the screen but it still under apple care so I just want to know if they going to fix the secreen or change hole the Mac Pro?

Mac Pros are towers and have no monitor. A MBP does have a screen, but unless the screen damage was a manufacturing defect, Apple will not cover the damage under your warranty. But they will fix it at your expense.

  • Is my stuck trackpad covered under Apple Care?

I spilled food on my trackpad last night and now it's stuck! Is this covered under Apple Care? I know water is not but I'm not sure if food has the same policy.

Accidental Damage isn't covered under Applecare. Unfortunately, no.

  • Swelling of battery is ruining my trackpad! I m still under apple care protection.

Can i get my battery replace under apple care if its affecting other parts of the computer?

Same thing here... except I am out $125 and an afternoon of unscrewing and screwing and now my three - week -old trackpad is having same issues.
My swelling battery caused my touchpad to do weird things... I replaced the whole keyboard/touchpad... but now I see that it was the swelling battery making the click bar "stick" on.  It is happening again with the new keyboard/touch pad...
I hate to toss a battery that is good otherwise the fact that it expands when hot... otherwise an engineering defect-- inadequate heat dispersion/close tollerances with touch-pad.
Apple give me a discount on a fresh battery... this battery seem to work just fine... 3-hours or so of use without charging.

  • Hello, the screen of my Iphone 5C is totally broken, I'm living in Lima and I have also an Apple Care subscription. Where can let my Iphone, to be fixed?

Hello, the screen of my Iphone 5C is totally broken, I'm living in Lima and I have also an Apple Care subscription. Where can let my Iphone, to be fixed?

You must take it back to an Apple Store in the US. The warranty is not international. You cannot send it from Chile as Apple does not accept international shipments.

  • HT1941 is the power adapter covered under apple care?

mine seems to have frayed over time. The computer is still under apple care.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
If it came with your Mac, it's covered by AppleCare, so Apple will replace it for free if the power adapter is broken
