RAM and processor in a IBM Thinkpad 380D

Hi,
I'm wondering how much RAM i can put in my IBM Thinkpad and if possible, can i put a new processor in it?

  • Upgrading ram and processor

I have a mid 2010 white macbook, it become slow after I upgraded it to Mavericks. I would like to know if I reinstall the original OS it will be a bit faster or should I restore the original OS AND upgrade the ram and processor? If I go with the latter, on the Apple website it gives me this ram: PC3-8500 DDR3 1066 MHz. I've researched many brands on Amazon and some people cite problems after installing various brands. Can someone advice me toward a good ram and processor that wont cause any problems? Much appreciated!

Check the link below for highly recommended RAM.

  • MBP Ram and Processor

I am about to buy a MBP and i was wondering on some feedback on if its worth paying the extra for the 2.53 GHz MBP. Is there a noticable difference between the 2gb of ram and the 4 gb of ram. And the difference between the 2.4ghz processor and the 2.53 ghz.
I am not a big gamer but i am just curious how much of a difference all the features have in speed

Interesting. Apple isn't totally overcharging for the RAM this time. It's only $150 to max out the base model.
The hard drive is easy to replace, so if you want to go with the stock drive now and upgrade it later when larger drives are cheaper, you could choose to do that. You can get to 320GB 7200 RPM for $110 after rebate at macsales.com; Apple wants $150 to upgrade the base model to that.
If you will be using Photoshop CS4 it uses the GPU and video RAM now so the 512MB would be good in that case.
All in all I think you will notice more of a speed boost from more RAM, more disk space, and more VRAM (if applicable) than you would from the CPU upgrade.
I still have no regrets about buying the base model Penryn Aluminum MBP with just 256MB VRAM, with main RAM I upgraded myself. But if I was shopping today, with Apple's more reasonable RAM prices and the growing importance of VRAM, I might go for the top end 15", for the RAM, VRAM, HD, and cache upgrade combo, and would consider the CPU boost to be simply a bonus thrown in. I would not spend the extra $300 on the 2.8GHz CPU.

  • Rendering, RAM and processor possibilies...

    Hey guys,
I've been working on a video for a few weeks now, and its been going smoothly, until a few days ago. I started needing to render more and more often and now after any change I make, however small it may be, I'm having to render the video again. I've been over and over all the different preferrences and options for playback and such tons trying to figure this out and I'm starting to go a little crazy.
My computer info is below... the video I'm editing is high definition captured from a SONY HDV camera...
In the FCE manual, I think, I read that effects and transitions that should come across in RT are in bold, the additive dissolve, cross dissolve, etc... so those should play without having to render... I'm assume thats correct. But thats not happening for me... I have to render everything, and the renders are taking a considerable amount of time too...... Heres some questions I've been wondering about....
Would increasing RAM help me with this? Or a better processor? Is there any scratch disk settings that would help? Is there a way to allocate more of my RAM for FCE, and if so, would that help the situation?
Anything anyone can suggest would be greatly appreciated.... and I appologize if this is somewhat lengthy and scatterbrained...
    Thanks,
    Derek.

    Hi(Bonjour)!
Realtime rendering is like fuel consumption: your milleage may vary.
That's related to your computer spec, nature of video material (your work in HDV converted to Apple Intermediate Codec), effects filters applyed, compositing clip etc.
The preference for realtime itself it also important.
If you do a simple edit in a new sequence (you use the correct setup for your sequence, right? : Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60 to capture an edit HDV material), and put a clip after another, and hit the play button, is there any red bar in timeline top portion?
If so, does this bar is in (tiny line) video or audio line?
You say that you've captured from an HD Sony camcorder, what model?
What is your workflow for capture: firewire cable? down conversion to SD material upon capturing, dragging file from the camcorder's hard disk or DVD?
I do suspect an incorrect easy setup for your timeline: if your timeline displays red bar in tiny lines, your sequence properties doesn't match your clips properties.
Can you give us more detail about video format (use item's attributes in contextual menu) for one clip and your sequence?

  • 4g vs 6 g of ram and processor

I am looking to purchase a laptop in the next couple of weeks and I do not know where to begin.  I have tried to find some advice on 4g vs 6 g of ram.  I am not a huge gamer and I will most likely just use the video graphics to watch netflix on my laptop.  I am looking for something that will last me four years.  Should I look at 6 g's of ram for its longevity?  What about processors?  I know that Intel released at i3, i5, i7.  For a basic user who just looks to use the internet and watch movies and write many college papers that require several programs running at once, what should I look for?   All help is welcomed!!!!

4GB is perfectly fine for your use. Having a system with more RAM doesn't really mean anything unless you've got a solid CPU to go with it.

  • GB - RAM and processor demands

I'm using GB2 on a new iBook 1.33GHz G4 and find that it chokes quite easily on multi-tracks songs compared to my 1GHz G4 DP desktop Mac. The laptop has 512MB RAM, the desktop 1.25GB. Would fitting more RAM to the iBook help or is it more of a processor issue?
If RAM helps, how much should I get (apart from 'as much as possible')?
    Thanks

I noticed that things improved with 'maximum performance' settings in the energy saver control panel and I suppose the iBook HD would be affected by that
The Energy Saver setting probably doesn't affect the HD, but it would affect performance in general (unles you allow the HD to sleep when possible). GB really taxes the entire system, so having a slow processor and a fast HD won't work well, having a slow HD and a fast processor won't work to well, and needless to say RAM can be an issue (for any OS X app. The more, the better).
A FireWire drive would make it easier t swap files between machines,
Yes, I have a recording machine, and a Mixing and Mastering machine. All I do is carry the drive between them. This has worked wonderfully for me (since GarageBand (1))
too, it seems to take ages to send files via my old AirPort set up.
Eesh, I wouldn't even consider transfering large files via airport, FAR too slow. If I do need to actually transfer a file and jacking an HD isn't convenient, I grab an ethernet cable (an order of magnitude faster than airport, and still twice as fast as airport extreme)

    1.
The device with larger ram can open more applications compared to the device with less ram.
    2.
If processor has higher clock rate, the faster the app or game will execute.
High speed processor with low ram can execute apps faster than low speed processor with high ram.
Low speed processor with high ram can run many apps but execute apps slower.
    Hope you got the idea.

    Things to note:
I have been unable to update firmware on this computer for about a year now. Im not sure why.
I am running a bootleg copy of Windows XP on this computer, I would not like to spend $149 to get Windows 7 if possible.
any thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Why don't you take your 'old' MBP into your local Apple Store and have them check out everything that's wrong with it - and I mean everything? Then, when you get an estimate about how much it would cost to get the machine completely repaired, ask about the Apple flat-rate repair pricing?
It's worth a shot - and with what you may save, you can put in the bank for a new MBP.

  • Should I upgrade the RAM, the Processor, and add an ATA/133 card?!

    Hello!
I have a few more questions...
I only have 2 internal drives...
(one 300GB which is the main one that runs the applications and one 60Gb used as extra storage mainly for my video projects)
Do I need an ATA/133 PCI controller card for them?
will it really be worth it?
(meaning will it actually make a difference in speed or not?)
or do you only need one of those cards if you have 3 or 4 drives?
    also,
would adding more RAM (up to the 2.0 GB limit)
(my comp is currently at 1.25 GB)
    make a huge difference?
    and the processor...
if i upgrade it to the 1.8 GHz
    (it's currently at 867 MHz)
will it be a major improvement?
i guess I'm asking if i would benefit in upgrading
    everything:
    the RAM,
    the processor,
and adding an ATA/133 PCI controller card
or would just upgrading/adding one or two of these be suffice?
I'm seriously looking into upgrading my comp but I want to know
what benefits me and what won't really make a difference
    -Cristina-
    p.s.
I know I posted this somewhere earlier,
but I'm just so anxious :/
I've been looking at so much information that my head feels like it's going to explode!

    Hi-
You don't need a controller card.
If you keep your main drive(s) on the ATA/100 bus (rear carrier), and add (if you like) up to two drives to the ATA/66 (forward carrier) bus, for storage, archives, etc., you will have fine performance from all drives.
If you are going to add a drive, I would add a larger drive to the ATA/100 bus, and move the smaller (60gb) to the ATA/66 position, relegated to storage. Your graphics work (is it?) will then run well on the two drives on the ATA/100 bus.
In a G4, running with maximum RAM (2gb) is always a good performance move, and helps reduce the "spinning beachball", especially with large graphics files. As for "huge difference", not as such, but, RAM is one of the cheapest (especially now) performance buys that can be had, and more RAM is always better than less.
Upgrading to dual 1.8ghz processors would be a "Wow!" type of upgrade, compared to the current dual 867mhz processors. Be advised, that processor upgrades require that you be able to boot to OS 9 prior to installing the processor upgrade. This is to apply necessary "patches" to allow the system to use the new processors. If you don't still have a boot-able OS 9 installed on your machine, you will need to have that ability prior to a processor upgrade.
Another processor upgrade option, would be to change your processors to dual 1.25 or 1.42mhz processors from another MDD. The difference from a 11.25 dual processor, and the dual 1.8, is really between 10-15% increase in performance, with the 1.25mhz providing about 20-25% increase over the dual 867mhz processors. The main problem with this approach, is that there are some modifications that must be made, which aren't the average "do it yourself" type of work.
In the end, though, you may want to take the upgrade money, $600+, sell the MDD, $300+, and put the money on a new Mac. Don't get me wrong, I like upgrades, but it is as much to tinker, as it is to boost performance. And, at the end of the day, I don't need a new Mac. If you don't, either, you will be happy with the upgrades.
