Ram compression, is it usefull

hey just wanted to ask those who are running Yosemite if the ram compression feature is useful or is it just a gimmick.
it sounds interesting. does anyone notice it actually working the way they advertise

Post a picture of the label (block the IMEI number) and I can check it for you.
Also if you still have the box for the phone, check what SI number it has.

  • No RAM compression on my Mac

    Hi,
My Mac seems to not compressing the memory... Don't know why. Or it's just some applications that support RAM-compressing? If that matter, why iPhoto, the Apple's own app, don't support it? The specs are: MacBook Aluminum Late 2008, 2 GHz Core 2 Duo, 8 GB DDR3 RAM.
    Any ideas?

The OS controls memory compression, so apps don't have to do anything special to support that. And the OS compresses data in memory only when it needs to use more of it than is currently available, so unless that happens no compression occurs.
For example, at the moment my iMac is using 7.48 GB of its 8 GB of real memory, but only less than 1 MB of that is compressed, probably because some hours ago I was running about eight apps simultaneously, several of which needed a lot of working memory.
Unless you get warnings about running out of memory, or your Mac slows down greatly with a lot of long-duration 'wait' cursors (a.k.a. spinners or spinning beach balls), there is no reason to assume anything is wrong with memory use in your Mac.

  • How to disable ram compression in MAC OS 10.9

More beach ball's that I need.
Since I loaded Mavericks, I suspect that the memory compression method, as opposed to the virtual memory swap file method, is causing more delays.
Can the compression of ram-loaded apps and data be disabled and the old swap file be used? If so, how is this done?
Is there a knowledge base article on this?
    Thanks
    Barry
    I have an 8Gig 2012 MBP.

To my knowledge, there is no user option to do what you indicate you wish to do....

  • Ever going to be an x-ram upgrade program when newer games come o

Just wondering it looks like the x-ram is the block in the upper right corner other than that and prob some firmware cards are the same. So at a leter date when more bf2ish games come out and the x-ram really starts getting usefull any program to send the card in and have the ram installed.
It would be a cool idea since it seems all the boards are ready for the ram.

well that sucks to hear when you guys do make an x-fi2 think about making the memory an upgrade or at least offer a version with memory and no stupid 80.00 io box with an entertainment center that no one seems to like cause of the low rez.

  • Running firefox in the background

    Hi,
I find that if I launch firefox when there is already a window open, I get a much faster startup than from a when it's not open at all. I assume this is because there are a group of shared processes which don't have to be started when the second firefox is opened.
How would I go about getting these shared processes starting at login so that I can have consistently fast startups for firefox? I can't find anything about this on the wiki or in google questions. Is such a thing even possible?
    Many thanks,

Actually there's quite an extensive guide on the Arch wiki for increasing Firefox startup times, as well as performance 'tweaks'.
If your using an ad blocking extension, try disabling that first. As for the rest, highlights from the wiki include:
    - run the entire profile in RAM
    - compress the Firefox executable
    - profile cleaner (defrag SQL databases)
    - stop urlclassifier3.sqlite from being created again
    - turn off anti-phishing

  • OLAP server uses a lot of memory

    Hello Experts,
We are having a BPC Microsoft multi server environment.
The application server and database server are 2 seperated servers.
The version for BPC is SP7 and for SQL Server 2008 SP1 cumulative update 6
Each time we are running reports or performing actions on BPC, we see onthe database server in the task manager that the MSMDSRV.EXE
applicationstarts to increase in memory use. It starts with 1,5GB of memory use andit ends 10 minutes later (when the report is don
    e running) with almost
4GB. For some heavy reports, the memory use grows till 12-13GB.
Is this normal? There is 32GB in this server, would the server crash if
there was less then 32GB? Because due to this memory use of the OLAP
server, the server uses up to 28GB of RAM.
Is it usefull to use a fixed memory allocation for the Analysis Server?
And how can we calculate how much we have to allocate?
Do we have to modify the MSMDSRV.INI file? And isn't this Analysis Server
using a cache, because it seems that when the report is done running, all
the memory used by the OLAP server is free again.
Are there any parameters we can change to increase the performance of the
    Analysis Server?
    Thanks in advance,
    Arjun.

    Hi ,
You have to place this question into other Forum SAP BPC version for SAP Microsoft.
You have to check if you have at least CU 6 for your SQL Server 2008 SP1 and also you have to make sure you have right parameters for OLAP
    Memory Heap type = 2
    HeapTypeForObjects = 0
PreAllocate=25 (this paramters is just into msmsdsrv.ini)

  • Mavericks is super SLOW on Macbook Pros

Ok I have 10 macs at our office. 4 are macbook pros about 2009 to 2012. I have upgraded them all to Mavericks. The iMacs are fine and older than the laptops with less Ram.
The MacBooks are now good paperweights.
I have done everything. .... Clean install..... Even without installing any new apps, it just starts hogging RAM and spinning beach ball.
Replaced / added Ram / played with RAM compression in terminal.
Lion was easily 115% more responsive.
This is on 4 different Macbook Pros.
Why are people not more outraged about this?

    SOLVED!

  • Logic Pro X and Mavericks

For anyone thinking about upgrading to Mavericks...... (OS X 10.9)
    Firstly, don't upgrade straight away!!!!!
Only do so if you have full clone backups of your system HD. Use something like Carbon Copy Cloner or Superduper! to make a clone of your current  system disk before you try and install Mavericks... and please do not rely on Time Machine backups.. as in the past, these types of backups have no provided full protection after upgrading the OS. Only a decent cloned image of your system drive, that you can easily and quickly restore from, will provide you with that safety net just in case anything goes wrong... so you can just restore from the cloned image and be back where you started from prior to the upgrade to 10.9
Wait a few days until some of the Users here and elsewhere..  have tested out the combination of LPX and the Public Release version of Mavericks.... I know it's very tempting to use the 'latest and greatest' stuff... but if you rely on your current setup in any real sense... hold off and see what the general option is in regards to compatibility with Drivers/Hardware and Software/plugins etc.... and you will save yourself a lot of potential headaches....
    The most common issues after performing a major OS X upgrade are;
    1) Driver/hardware incompatibility,...... Do not upgrade unless you know for sure your Audio/Midi interfaces have drivers with full Mavericks compatibility, ready for installation. Check with the device's Websites before even thinking about upgrading! No update or comfirmation of working fine? Don't upgrade!!
    2) 3rd party apps and plugin incompatibility. Again, wait and confirm any plugins and other apps you use/need are fully 10.9 compatibile.... before upgrading.
    3) Initial bugs.... All OS updates will have some bugs in them initially. .. Its the 'nature of the beast'. No matter how much Beta testing is done, bugs do and will slip through the cracks.... So, wait until at least the first couple of bug fixes are released to correct these enevitable issues... before making the transition.
The above is just some friendly advice from someone who has made all of these mistakes in the past (and paid for it!)  It's your choice to follow it or ignore it of course...... but history tells us that those who just charge ahead and upgrade tend to suffer for it later.. Just looking at the hundreds of posts that were made here by users with issues.. after Mountain Lion was released.. willl confirm this....
    Cheers..

How would you rate the overall feel of the OS. Smooth, any graphic glitches or halting when using the browser?
Nothing I could easily identify Pancenter... Everything seems to be running for me, as it did in ML..... I do not sense any real improvements or degradation between ML and Mav though in fairness, I haven't spent that much time with Mav other than working/testing with Logic... and as far as Logic itself is concerned.. everything is running as smoothly as ever for me.
To be honest, there is nothing new in Mav that would really make me want to go update.... and so i am glad they have made it a free update because i doubt I would have spent any money doing so.. I don't use Laptops these days so the battery saving stuff is of little interest.. and most of my Macs have stacks of RAM so the RAM compression stuff doesn't really do much for me... I've been using XtraFinder (a wonderful free app I should add if you do a lot of file moving)  for a while now so the new Tabs feature in Finder isn't something I was waiting for...
The only new feature in Mav i have really found myself using a great deal while I was testing the various Dev releases on one of my testbed systems.. is File Tagging which is great for tagging samples etc... to easily find/track stuff scattered around my various Macs here..
Do you have an iLok by any chance and, if so, are you using the new iLok Licence Manager software ?
Sorry but No. I don't use any iLok protected products these days... I used to but nowadays the only dongle protection products I use are those using Elicensor.. which btw works fine with 10.9 it seems.. Just started up VEP5 without issue...

  • Memory clean: 6,48gb in total but my MBP actually has 8gb

    Hi,
I keep track of my memory because i attempt to understand why my system eats it like it's nothing. Now, i have the app Memory Clean and it shows the following after a cleanup:
What does it mean? why do i have 6,49gb according to the system?

    OoopsMisclick wrote:
1gb memory for a game isnt that much. Which means my mac will be worthless if i play a more demanding game for example.
No, because with any modern memory management system, RAM will be dynamically allocated so that the apps that need it will get it as long as you have a decent amount installed. With 8GB installed, you have a decent amount so you should not worry.
With Mavericks, memory management is even more sophisticated due to the RAM compression feature. This is causing many veteran Mac users to rethink what "low RAM" means. You cannot simply look at the amounts and say "it's using too much" or "there isn't enough RAM" because you don't really understand that from looking at the numbers. Reading RAM levels does not work like reading a battery meter or a measuring cup.
With modern RAM management, the most inefficient state is a lot of free RAM, because RAM is so valuable for speeding up things through caching that if apps/OS use little RAM and leave mostly free RAM in a modern OS, they are probably badly programmed from a performance point of view and they are actually wasting RAM if they are not putting it to good use. Also, they are not hogging RAM if they will allow the OS to reallocate if another app starts to need it more.
That is why so many people in this thread are telling you Memory Clean is not worth using. You are trying to second-guess automatic RAM management and you're not going to do it as well as the system can.

  • Is 500mb of swap used normal when there is still free memory?

Kind of worried First mac so might be abit new to OS X. Thanks in advance!

    Kev~* wrote:
Right now I still have a relatively small number of apps that are open (~8-9), which doesnt justify such high ram usage, much less 500mb of swap.
The number of applications actually doesn't matter one bit. It's the type of applications and what kind of RAM they need. I have read some Mac engineers say that some applications need to preallocate RAM because of what they do, although OS X provides for ways to do that which will allow that RAM to be released to other applications if needed.
I could open 12 consumer apps and not see much change in swap file usage. But I could reboot and open just Photoshop and have it make a panorama or HDR of several DSLR images, or fire up a single 3D, motion graphics, or scientific program, and RAM/swap file requirements could instantly outpace anything general office apps could ever need.
Since you're new to OS X, you might want to become familiar with the UNIX memory management model that OS X uses. In other words, RAM management in OS X may be unlike what you were used to before, but its UNIX-based model is normally very efficient, especially with the new Mavericks RAM compression.
Also, based on what I've seen (using graphics apps), only 500MB swap wouldn't even get my attention...

  • Is it normal, that the RAM is fully occupied under Mavericks?

I noticed this two weeks ago, when my iMac got slower than usally.

Mavericks memory management is a dramatic departure from memory management in previous versions of OS X. Mavericks will strive to keep the memory fully occupied and make room for applications to run by compressing the contents of RAM rather than writing to and from swapfiles on the hard drive. The only statistic that is of much meaning to 99% of Mavericsk users is Activity Monitor's "Memory Pressure". If the "memory Pressure" bar is GREEN you are good to go. YELLOW indicates that it may be paging to the HD more than than optimum and you probably should consider more RAM. RED indicates you are paging heavily to the HD and you definitely need more RAM or to close some open apps.
Many have found their RAM needs are less with Mavericks than with Mountain Lion or Lion because of the superior memory management. Slowdowns under Mavericks are very often the result of out of date applications and utilities. The freeware utility Etrecheck has been usefull in identifying suspect applications. If you don't feel competent to interpret what it reports, post the report back here and someone will be able to help. In my case it turned out I had three or four out of date extensions and an antivirus appication that was slowing things down. Once those were removed/replaced everything was quickly back to normal.

  • Anyone else having trouble opening CMYK PDFs from Photoshop CC with JPEG 'high' compression?

(Cross-post from the Photoshop forum, where I was asked to post in the Acrobat forum: http://forums.adobe.com/message/5553829 )
When I save a PDF file in Photoshop CC in CMYK color with JPEG compression (quality = high), it will save without any errors. However, when I open the file in Acrobat (11.0.3), I get an "Out of Memory" pop up error. I press Ok, and the document is just displayed as a blank white image.
I'm using Win7 64-bit, Photoshop CC 64-bit. Plenty of memory (24GB) and allocated RAM in preferences, and I've done some troubleshooting that leads me to believe the error is not due to system memory, but rather a specific bug in the software. I have Photoshop CS6 on the same machine, and if I open the PSD, save as PDF with the above settings, everything is fine when I open it using Acrobat. This seems to just be for Photoshop CC, not CS6.
Here is the troubleshooting I've done so far:
PDF format, RGB color, any other settings --> Acrobat can open the file.
PDF format, CMYK, no compression --> Acrobat can open the file.
PDF format, CMYK, JPEG compression [medium] --> Acrobat can open the file.
PDF format, CMYK, JPEG compression [high] --> Acrobat can NOT open the file because it encounters the "out of memory" error.
PDF format, CMYK, JPEG compression [maximum] --> Acrobat can open the file.
This is silly. I don't get it. Can anyone else confirm this problem for me?
    Updated:
Like you said, there isn't enough information to rule out an issue with Photoshop CC, as the same action using Photoshop CS6 results in a usable file.
New information (while making files for uploading):
The error only occurs with CMYK files of larger dimensions. On a 500x500px image, Acrobat throws out "A drawing error has occured". a 2500x2500px image runs into the "Out of memory" error. In either case, Acrobat cannot successfully open the file generated by Photoshop CC, while it can if it was made using Photoshop CS6.

Another observation for what it is worth (not a solution again). I was able to open all 3 PDFs in Irfanview as graphics. The properties of the image were
The major changes for the others within the JPegs was the number of pixels (133X133) and the size (1.4inX1.4in). There is also a reduction in the number of colors.
Just for information, I opened the big JPeg in Acrobat (9.5.5) and it opened fine. However, it looks like the color space was changed as shown below:
Even if I change the input to use CMYK and not RGB, it looks like it gets converted to RGB. I haven't spent time to figure out the preflight analysis properly, but at least this may give you some info back.

  • When downloading a file from google drive and save in my phones document directory, the file size is compressed. Why?

I have downloaded files from "Dropbox" and save in phones document directory,After downloading in document directory, the size of the download file is same as the actual size in dropbox. I can also open it from document directory.Everything is ok. But when I follow the same process for google drive files, the file size is compressed(if actual size of file is 1.2Mb the download file size is 61Kb). So I can not open it from document directory. So, How can i download the actual size of the file in document directory? I am using google api objectivec client for google drive.
    Thanks in advance.

If an iphone were to try to download a full size document ot photo, it woul overload its own ram, and crash, resulting in a laggy iphone. Therefore it is compresses

  • High RAM usage when system is 'idle' (EtreCheck)

    Hey guys,
First timer here. Ok here's my question :
I recently bought a secondhand Macbook pro 15 inch. For me it's a huge upgrade coming from a 2009 13 inch Macbook pro. Because a friend of mine wants to buy my old one I was doing some diagnostics on the 13 inch, which has 4 GB of RAM, and found out it had a lot of inactive RAM usage and wired usage, almost 2 GB, due to a lot of launchdaemons etc which were hogging the RAM. I used terminal to kill these agents and deamons and now that system is running smooth again. Maybe it's wise to mention that the 13 inch runs on ML.
3 days ago I did a clean Yosemite install on the 15 inch, swapped the HDD for a SSD. And already the activity monitor shows a whopping 4,28 GB of RAM usage while I'm typing this with just safari open. I thought I could do the same trick as I did with my 13 inch but it didn't help, had some java deamons and helpers and deleted those. In terminal I looked up everything via launchctl list and there's nothing unusual going on as far as I can see. I had VirtualBox for one day but uninstalled it using their uninstaller. I have no clue what's eating all this RAM.  Please help me out so I can be a proud owner of my second macbook for atleast 5 years to come. Thanks in advance.

The page outs indicate the OS has not recently swapped any memory to disk.
Apple made changes to 10.9 that are the same on 10.10. Memory will be used as much as possible. It is the fastest storage on the system, keeping it free is a waste of your time - data loads fastest from RAM.
    This is a good explanation…

The system also frees 'cache' memory when another process has more need to use it. Eventually it will swap to disk (which is slow) so the OS also compresses memory before swapping is needed.
Please avoid killing launchd jobs, many will simply restart or relaunch again later. Eventually you may kill one that hangs the OS & corrupts the disk via a forced shutdown.
I do suspect you may see issues when RAM does get low, but there is no evidence of that here. The memory pressure graph will show red when swapping - every other colour is fine. Wait until you see red & then note the top memory users.
If you don't want java installed you need to find removal instructions & get it all off the system, simply stopping the update checks will leave Java in an old state - terrible for security.
Also do you know what 'Live' is? It crashed recently, if it keeps doing that it may be worth a look, however it may just be one if the things that was effects by the killing spree

  • RE: Cleaning and Compression Environment Repository

    Mark,
I'm not sure what I did wrong the first time. I thought I
covered all the bases, but just to be certain, I did the
whole sequence again and now it works.
Before, I did have problems restarting the environment,
because the repository was locked. I had to kill a
hanging process to solve the problem. Most likely
it was this process that was interfering with my original
    attempts.
With this script, you offered some very usefull infor-
mation. Where did you get it? Like I said in my
first posting, I couldn't find any documentation.
The "help" function of "envedit" doesn't show any of
the commands you used. No way, you stumbled
    on this by accident.
    Thanks,

The script mentioned is the exact sequence of commands that should be
    used.
Did you shutdown the environment first? You cannot clean an environment
repository while the environment is online. I know that these commands
work for both NT and Unix environment managers.
