RAM confusion.

Looking at upgrading one of my Macs. New RAM but can't get a definitive on what's best so any opinions greatly received. Read on....
Going to get Kingston and all the ones I've seen meet the specs but have some differences I'm not sure of;
In addition, I don't suppose it makes any difference but apple don't seem to mix the modules, their upgrades are always all 512MB sticks, all 1GB sticks etc. etc? Never pairs of 512MB in the same machine as 1GB sticks for example.
Also on the sticker on top sometimes you see 2R4, 1R8, sometimes 2R8. Is this important? Are 2R4s equivalent to 1R8s?
Tks.
All in a MP1,1 by the way.
Just to clarify, as for mixing RAM modules. I didn't mean a 512 and a 1024 making up a 'matched a pair. I mean 2 x 512 making up a pair plus another two 1024s making up the next pair. So referring to the below, (where L is for lower riser and U for upper riser), I mean ;
L1 2048MB
L2 2048MB
L3
L4
U1 512MB
U2 512MB
U3 1024MB
U4 1024MB

The only thing you needed to say was MacPro 1,1 that means it uses pairs of DDR2 FBDIMMs.

Yes you can mix. AND I have never once seen anything said or written about can't mix in the same machine which is the same I bought back August 2006 (two weeks after it came out) but I have been thru different sets and now using the above. Your looking at ranking of DIMM I suspect.
Due to the nature of the memory controller in that machine the ideal and for symmetrical performance are matched quad sets (4) and if you have more to have 8 DIMMs - 8 increases latency though no one would likely be able to measure meaningfully.

First time here, and think this should be very simple but...... I have a desktop HP A708n
w/ 512 ram here's the situation.... Hp says the added ram memory is PC3200 DDR400  333MHz 184 pin...- Best Buy says PC 2700 DDR SDRAM 333MHZ 184 pin and PCWorld says PC2700 DDR SDRAM ... My BIOS say 2700 DDR.........NOthing about SDRAM...
Somebody please advise me which to buy..... Makes no sense that HP would be off on their product.... Ideas very welcome

    Welcome,
    Jacquie!
    Upgrading
RAM confuses many people, so you are not alone.
I sometimes select RAM by using the Best Buy® website Memory Finder and cross reference
with the manufacturer, just as you have done.
However I did find corroborating information on HP’s website for your
model A708n.  Listed below are your
specifications and pay special attention to the maximum allowed RAM.  In your case you may add one 512 MB PC2700 to
the existing memory (RAM) in the open slot OR you may replace the existing chip
with one 1 GB PC2700 stick.
    Memory
    Component
    Attributes
    Memory Installed

    Type
    184 pin, DDR SDRAM
    DIMM slots
    Two
    Open DIMM slots
    One
    Now, what
does all this mean?  The information you found
was also technically correct.  We refer
to the speed of RAM in terms of PCxxxx where “x” is a maximum number at which
the chip will perform well.  This is to
imply that some chips may “clock down” or slow down to lower speeds without
much issue.  A PC3200 memory stick may be
usable in a motherboard which only goes as fast as PC2700.  Think of it more like driving behind a
tractor – your car can usually go faster, but you are limited by that big green
thing in front of you. Oh, and to clarify, “DDR RAM” is synonymous with “SDRAM.”  There is a newer type of RAM called “DDR2” for
newer computers which includes speeds above PC3200.  This type of RAM is a whole other topic, but
just remember that DDR2 RAM is NOT compatible with computers that use “DDR.”  Please read the packaging carefully so as not
to accidently confuse the two.  When in
doubt, let Geek Squad® check it out!

  • After Effects not using free RAM?

    Hi there
Just like to ask question regarding after effects and ram usage.
I remember before I installed the app Memory Booster - that allows you to keep track of how much ram, there was a healthy use of RAM there from after effects.
But i noticed today, whilst rendering and doing background cache rendering, the free RAM still available stays at around 4GB and I am wondering why it's not using this free RAM to help faster rendering?
this is my current multi-processing/ram settings on AE- essentially it should be using up to 6.5 GB of RAM as i allocated as I need faster rendering? Just wondering why it's staying stuck at around 3-4GB of free RAM on my system when it could clearly be used by AE. I want AE to use the RAM as it is the only running program on my system when i work!
Memory Booster down to 3.18GB with one safari tab open for Adobe forums, when exiting, it jumps back up to 4GB free RAM
    Confused!
    Thanks

Different projects, different footage attributes, different AE features used, different effects used, different delivery specs....
...are you comparing apples to apples, or apples to ORANGES?  We don't know that.

  • IMac 21.5" confused by RAM

    Good afternoon
It is a 21.5" iMac (A1311 EMC 2389 OS 10.5.8) with factory installed RAM is running really, really slowly and seems to be confused about what sort of RAM is installed.  Recognizes that there are 2 X 2GB sticks installed, but doesn't know what type or speed of RAM or that it has any memory slots in which to install RAM.  See screen shot below.
Swapped RAM with another set of sticks and moved the RAM to different slots to no avail.
System Profile - Memory recognizes slots (all 4 of them) and the sticks in the populated slots and the capacity of the sticks.
Activity Monitor doesn't show any process consuming ridiculous amounts of CPU time or memory.
Running Disk Utility to see how the drive is working and though it hasn't completed yet, nothing much is requiring repairs.
Any suggestions as to what to test/try next?
    TIA
    Greg

Vintage doesn't mean it is "old."   Vintage means the age range of the model.   Each model stays exactly the same components inside and out for a period of time.  That period of time is known as its vintage.  Think of wine.
Let's say you went to Best Buy and bought
    PNY - 2GB PC6400 DDR2 SoDIMM Laptop Memory
simply because you had a Mac laptop that had that description of RAM in its documentation, you'd think you got the right RAM because of what the user manual said for the laptop.  Would that be safe?
    NO!
The EMC# is one way of knowing the age of the machine.   http://www.everymac.com/ shows you several other ways.   Regardless it is the age that says the season and year of the Mac's release.  Now there were only three iMacs that were an EMC# of 2389:
    http://everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/?search_keywords=2389
So you need RAM that is compatible with a mid-2010 iMac, according to the RAM seller.  No other RAM will work 100% reliably.  And http://www.macsales.com/ and http://www.crucial.com/ are the two vendors I'm aware of that do list RAM by the specific Apple stated vintage.

  • Somewhat confused about what RAM to get for PB G4 (the DDR2 model)

Hello. This is a long post since I'll try and explain in great detail what the problem is. I've purchased a refurbished 15.2" Power Book G4 off ebay the other day, it is the last 15 inch powerbook G4 apple released in October '05 since it has DDR2 RAM.
I haven't got the laptop yet, but figured I'd think ahead and get some more RAM for it to max it out. However I'm in a confused state of mind now as to what RAM will actually work in the laptop. On the Apple specification page for the laptop (which also lists the 1.67ghz 17 inch and the 1.5ghz 12 inch), it states for the 15 inch that it works with:
"512MB (single SO-DIMM) of PC2-4200 DDR2 SDRAM running at 333MHz; two SO-DIMM slots; support for up to 2GB"
Is that correct though? PC2-4200 RAM is 533MHz, not 333MHz. Or at least all the PC2-4200 RAM I can find is running at 533MHz. The 333MHz DDR2 modules are called PC2-2700. The other odd thing is, I use lowendmac.com a lot for specifications since I find they tend to list more details than Apple generally do (or at least they tend to go into more detail). On the page for the same laptop they state:
"RAM: 512 MB, expandable to 2 GB using 533 MHz PC2-4200 DDR2 RAM"
So they are apparently in agreement with my train of thought here. Not that I'm disagreeing with the official Apple specifications of course, it's just really confusing. Now I know I need SO-DIMM RAM, so I went onto an online retailer I generally use for this sort of stuff and found some Kingston value ram real cheap:
    1GB, SO-DIMM, PC2-4200 533MHz, Non-ECC CL4 Unbuffered 1.8v module. Model number KVR533D2S4/1G.
Is this going to work in the laptop? If I believe Lowendmac.com, it will. If I believe Apple specs, it probably won't, or at least it may cause undesirable operation. Just to see what Kingston had to say on this, I went onto Kingston's website (valueram.com), I used the configurator search function and put in powerbook g4 as model, and it showed me a list of powerbooks. I picked mine (15 inch using DDR2) and sure enough it came up with the right page, and listed two RAM modules Kingston sell. A 512mb (of which I'll ignore), and the 1GB (the one I want).
The 1GB module was model number KTA-PB533/1G. Now just looking at that suggests to me that it is 533MHz, since it has 533 in the model name (and a trend with Kingston model numbers is to put the speed in the model name). Just to be sure though I did look for some detailed specifications but oddly enough I couldn't find any for that RAM module on their website so I googled it instead, and came up with several websites suggesting that it was 533MHz.
So, what should I do here? It would seem Apple's specs saying 333MHz was wrong, however I've got two RAM modules by Kingston here and they both appear to have the same specifications except one is obviously specifically for the powerbook, the other is just for generic laptops. So unless the one specifically for the powerbook is a different shape or something I can't see any reason why I should should pay a lot more money for the specific model, when I can get the apparent same exact RAM module for a bargain.
    This is, confusing.

Strong recommendation to not go 'cheap' on the memory. Powerbooks are particular about the quality of memory, due primarily to the way Apple manages power on the memory bus. While some memory can meet Apple's published specs, it can fail in use. if you scan these discussions, you'll find people who have tried the KVR (Kingston value ram) memory and it has not worked for them. If you want to try it, suggest you get it from someplace you can return it and get your money back.
As already mentioned, Crucial (also sold as Micron) and Samsung are two brands that work reliably. Regular Kingston memory works well too. Crucial guarantees their memory will work when chosen from their memory selector at http://www.crucial.com . You can usually find a discount coupon on the web too. Samsung you buy through distributors, and I'd also recommend OWC at http://www.macsales.com . Kingston you already know is at http://www.kingston.com . You can scan the discussions for other brands that have worked (like Hynix, mentioned in the prior post, for example).

  • Confusing behavior with upgraded RAM

    Hi All,
I Upgraded the RAM of my MacMini (1.66Ghz Intel) about 3 months ago. I swapped out the 2x512MB for 2x1GB DDR2 667Mhz Corsair RAM. The RAM was recognized and I had not had any problems until this weekend. I don't reboot this machine much, but I had installed a printer driver and the installer wanted a restart. After restarting, OS X says it only sees 512MB in one of the two RAM slots (the first one), the other is listed as 'empty'.
This is really confusing because I would think it would either recognize 1GB or nothing, how could it only recognize half the memory of one of the DDR2 slots? Don't really want to open it up again, and I have already tried zapping the PRAM but no change.
Any help or ideas would be appreciated.
    Alex

    Hi AndyO,
Thanks again. Ok, So I'm starting to think it's some kind of hardware problem. Here are the tests I did.
First I removed one of the two 512MB, and it booted and showed 512. Next I installed 1GB + the 512 that was present, it did not boot at all. Next I removed both and installed a single 1GB in the lower slot. It booted and showed 1GB of ram. Next I added the second 1GB and it would not boot. Finally I put the 1GB that caused it not to boot, in the lower slot alone and it booted and showed 1GB. This leads me to believe the ram is not the problem. It seems to be the paired RAM since, when I put a single chip in the upper slot it would also boot.
So, is this the most likely problem? either the slot itself or the board? Seems like it wouldnt want to boot if the board had a problem but thats just my guess. Any more ideas would be helpful. Right now I am running a Single 1GB chip untill I can figure out this issue.

  • Confused about RAM expansion...

Okay, so I'm not sure what to believe when it comes to memory in an Intel iMac...
    I have a 24" 2.33 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac with 1 gb of RAM (2 - 512 mb chips).
Is one of those built in (soldered to the motherboard) or not?
I keep seeing some people saying (including who I just ordered new memory from) that you can install a maximum of 3 gb in this machine. Apple's manual claims 2.5 gb.
I've ordered one 1 gb and one 2 gb chip for this machine, and now I'm worried we just wasted our money on the 1 gb.
    Please help!

No wurries! Nothing is soldered in. I have a 20" iMac of
the same vintage and updated the RAM a few weeks ago.

  • How to allocate more ram to T410 IntelHD graphics? CONFUSED

    Hello There
I have a T410 Thinkpad, and I would like to know how  to allocate more ram to the IntelHD graphics so that I can run my video games a lot better. I have searched through the bios and cannot find how
    Sorry for my English

If you're running Windows 7 or later, Windows should automatically allocate up to 1.5GB of system RAM to the integrated graphics.

  • Confusing RAM specs

I have a 15 inch Flat Panel G4 imac at my school am wanting to upgrade the RAM. I did my research, found the right kind to use, and was set. I remove the bottom plate to discover that there already IS a stick of RAM in the user accessible slot. It's 256. I go back to the system profile and i see this:
    Memory
    DIMM0/J12:
    Size: Empty
    Type: Empty
    Speed: Empty
    DIMM1/J13:
    Size: 256 MB
    Type: SDRAM
    Speed: PC133-333
To me, this would indicate that one slot is empty right? However, wasnt the non-user accessible slot supposed to have a stick of ram in it? Instead, it looks like this MAc has the stick JUST in the user accessible slot.
    Anyone understand?
I know i can get a stick and just replace that lower stick, but why wouldnt the upper non user accesible slot have a stick in it?

The only way to find out is to open it up. Thats a lot easier than you might think. Look at this:
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/imacg4/imacg4takeapart.html
Also be aware that the internal Ram is PC 133 168 pin SDRAM.

  • RAM. Help! Very Confused!

    Hello,
I have an iMac G3 350MHz w/ 320MB (64 MB chip that came w/ the computer and an additional 256MB chip I installed) I am planning to take the 64MB chip out and stick another 256MB chip in for a total of 512MB. The current speed of the 256MB chip I think is CL 3-3-3. Is that a bad thing?
Also, would a generic chip be ok?
    I found a 256MB generic chip for $20.89.
I have also noticed RAM producers sale hyperformace RAM, is that any good?
    Thanks.

For Generic - read cheap but compatibility not assured.More RAM will speed up your system. No RAM product will be faster than any other in your system.
The iMac's memory bus speed will limit the speed of whatever DIMMs you buy. iMacs CRTs were either 66MHz or 100MHz memory bus speeds. You can use PC66, PC100 or PC133 in a 66MHz system, or PC100 or PC133 in a 100MHz system but it will run at the lower speed. The iMac 350MHz has a 100MHz memory bus.
Crucial will guarantee the RAM you buy will work in your iMac.
You can choose CL2 or CL3 (CL2 = CAS Latency 222 = 2 Clock Cycles to Write, 2 Clock Cycles to Read and 2 Clock Cycles to Move data).
The bottom line is you may get away with cheap RAM - but to avoid any issues go with the branded. (The only choice between PC133 and PC100 is the cost and whether you'll ever be able to transfer it to a PC133 system only).
    regards
    mrtotes.

  • Still somewhat confused over Ram usage..

I've been looking through old posts and not finding an answer, but forgive me if I missed it somewhere.  I have a system that, when finished, will control multiple machines via webserver (Each machine has its own unique VI).  I know that 8.6.1 is limited to 4GB of Ram, but is that in total, or per VI instance?  I have a budget for buying computers, and I have to decide between one very powerful machine using intels new cpu and 16GB ram, or several cheaper boxes with PhenomX4's and 4GB ram.  One machine would stop a lot of headaches for me, but if there is some kind of hard 4GB limit maybe the other way will be more efficient.  Thanks for any help!

Do you have LabVIEW 64bit on 64bit Windows?
If your OS is 32 bit, the overall total is 2-3GB.

  • Mixing RAM Modules (1gig + 2gig = 3gig)

    Hello,
I am about to buy a Mac Mini and I am on a tight budget. The one thing I want to do for sure is upgrade the memory, but I'm in a quandary of sorts given my budget. The retailer where I want to buy the Mini from only sells the appropriate RAM for the Mini in 2gig modules. So here's my question: I know it is possible to mix the stock 1gig stick with a 2gig stick to get 3 gig of RAM total, but will it be worth it to me? I realize that the best configuration would be to slap in 2 2gig modules in and just be done with it, but with 3gig, would I be appreciatively shooting myself in the foot and killing the machine's performance, or wouldn't I notice? I need to have the memory installed at purchase because I am physically handicapped and adding the memory myself is out of the question. And after researching how to replace memory on the Mini, I wouldn't have the courage to ask anybody I know to attempt to do it after buying it. Is mixing RAM modules a good idea?
    Thanks in advance.
    Malcolm

Nope, I am not confused, There does have generation between Mac mini model. Maybe not official, but we all know. Check About This Mac ---> More Info ---> Model Identifier : Macmini2,1 (That means, 2nd generation)
    Macmini 3,x (means 3rd generation I supposed)
And the 3rd generation doesn't support Dual Channel, referred to Crucial.com
    http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=Mac%20mini%20%28Intel%20Core%2 02%20Duo%202.0GHz%20DDR3%29%20MB463LL/A&pl=Apple&cat=RAM

  • How much RAM can my Macbook Pro hold MAX?

Can my Macbook Pro hold a MAX of 8GB or is it just 4GB? I'm getting different answers online and I'm a little annoyed at this point. My computer specs currently are:
    15 inch Laptop
MacBook Pro 2.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
    Got my computer in 2009.
At Crucial.com it says it can hold up to 8GB when I select my computer processor speed from their list, but I noticed it saying DDR3 (and I don't know what that means to be honest). Here's the link:
    http://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=7F3A5584A5CA7304
To the best of my knowledge I selected the correct computer, which I own, from their list.
Under "About This Mac", on my computer, it says DDR2 for the memory, on Crucial.com it says DDR3. As a result I'm confused and will that cause problems?
I'll be getting my RAM kit from Crucial.com, so do I buy the 4BG kit, because that's all my laptop can handle, or is it OK to get the 8GB kit, which says DDR3?
I do a lot of video and audio, so I would like to get my RAM up to 8 GB if it will.
    Thanks

One more question friend....You've been so helpful
Will these two sticks work together on my machine?
    2GB, 200-pin SODIMM, DDR2 PC2-5300 memory module
    http://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=B54C51B4A5CA7304
    along with a...
    4GB 200-pin SODIMM DDR2 PC2-6400 Memory Module
    http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-CT51264AC800-200-pin-SODIMM-PC2-6400/dp/B001RB21JE
So these two would add up to 6GB total. Now the ONLY DIFFERENCE that I see is the 2GB stick is PC2-5300(667Mhz)speed and the 4GB stick is PC2-6400(800Mhz)speed. I understand that my machine won't run at the 800Mhz speed that the PC2-6400 stick is designed for, cause my machine says 667 under the memory info. From what I read online, it's ok to put a higher Mhz stick in there, it will just cap at 667Mhz speed? But.......both sticks are DDR2, which is right for my computer, but will the 667 MHz with a 800 Mhz be a huge no-no to run together? At this point I think that is my main concern! If I can't do this, than I think I'll have to go with the 2x2GB kit for 4GB total, but I REALLY would like to run 6GB.
    Shew.... :P
    Thanks again!

  • Arch64 RAM issues [Solved]

So I thought everything was fine until an application told me I had 4gb of RAM which is a far cry from the installed 16gb.
I did plenty of digging around and narrowed it down to a couple possibilities, but first my investigation:
    I started with free:
    [vuvffufg@HereAndNow-Main ~]$ free
total used free shared buff/cache available
    Mem: 4015688 858084 115144 24832 3042460 2860360
    Swap: 16777212 22460 16754752
As you can see it shows their is 4gb of RAM much as the application did.
You can see I have 16gb of swap; I am aware and am not confusing swap with RAM, I damn well have 4x4gb sticks according to the memtest86+ option on boot.
So then I thought hardware and tried dmidecode --type memory:
[vuvffufg@HereAndNow-Main ~]$ sudo dmidecode --type memory
    [sudo] password for vuvffufg:
    # dmidecode 2.12

Found it quite strange that the OS can obviously see the memory it just isn't being allocated, also what is with the slow clock speeds?
I found a similar output with lshw.
So I moved on to checking how it is actually initialized in dmesg, and honestly a lot of what was output I don't quite understand, I noticed that some memory was being reserved by the RAM map given by BIOs yet have no obvious way of disabling the BIOs RAM scheduler.

I figure there is plenty of unnecessary info in the dmesg and I apologize, but I want to find the problem of this illusive RAM.
    My system specs:
    AMD FX-8350
    4x4gb CMZ8GX3M2A160 Corsair RAM
    Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3
    NVidia GT 640
Please can someone guide me to the answer of the missing RAM?

  • Can too much memory lead to a kernel panic on a MacBook Pro? specs 2.4GHz intel core i7 16GB DDR3 RAM   late2011..My laptop began suffering from kernel panics 3 mos ago first noticed using public wifi. Gone thru apple support all the way to engineers

Can too much RAM memory in a late 2011 model macbook pro lead to kernel panic? That is what I was told by a senior supervisor from apple support who troubleshot this issue.First noticed this problem in Dec 2014 while using a private wifi at a relative's home. Did not occur again until Feb1 using a public wifi at a hotel. Never happened on my private wifi network until last night  attempting to use airplay. ( have used airplay before without issue). Late 2011 MacBook Pro running 10.9.5; 2.4 GHz Intel core i7, 16 GB DDR3,AMD Radeon HD 6770m 1024 MB graphic card.  The laptop came with 8GB RAM and I installed 8 GB about 2 years ago for some reason I cannot remember... probably because I thought the system was slowing down a little. I know that sounds silly. I do not run multiple programs at a time except I leave 6-8 website tabs open simultaneously. I don't photo or video edit.  I would describe my use as "light"  based on reading these blogs.I had purchased apple support and spent hours on the phone with them in early Feb moving up through support  and senior support to sending logs to the "engineers." Of course lots of things were done some of which I am sorry to report I cannot recall their technical definitions. Deleted  3rd party apps/programs; re-worked start up menu; re-installed operating system; reset " this, that and the other" using acrobatic simultaneous key strokes both in and out of safe mode..Anyway the results from the engineers came back and they suggested that if it happened again I was to remove the 8GB of RAM I had installed as the system was getting confused as to which chip to use.( that is my interpretation of what was said..prob dumbed down for me)...Anyway 1 day after these pronouncements came down I read that Apple had agreed to fix  graphics cards in some late model 2011 MBPs. I felt this was unlikely to be the issue  given all that had been done including an extended hardware test but called the Senior Support Supervisor I was working with to ask him to make sure. He never phoned me back. Should I go to the trouble of removing 8GB of RAM from my laptop? Of course I will try it as the alternative is a new computer.Blogs read that this model can support 16GB but Apple didn't test for it. Senior Supervisor claims this is my trouble.  Does that make sense?  Not to me....but it is clear to all my level of knowledge.  Can a malfunctioning graphics card be missed by an extended hardware test? I appreciate comments.

The RAM needs specs as shown below.
    Maximum Memory
16 GB (Actual) 8 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    2 - 204-pin PC-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
