RAM Failure? (3 Short Beeps, 3 Long Beeps, 3 Short Beeps)

Anyone have any idea what 3 Short Beeps, 3 Long Beeps, and 3 Short beeps when starting the computer mean? I heard it might be RAM failure? Could that be the case? How much has it been in the past? Computer's a Late 2010 13" Macbook Air with the Core 2 Duo. Thanks.

  • MBP 3 Beeps - RAM failure... already?!

    Hey all.
So this evening I was mixing a song on my MacBook Pro when suddenly the screen flashed/went beserk, and now when I try to turn it on I get three beeps, which repeat over time. My research indicates that means a RAM failure. But... I literally got this computer yesterday! Are MacBook Pro's really that finicky? This isn't my first MBP, and not my first experience with such issues...

Take it back to your local Apple Store. I'm assuming that you bought Apple provided RAM? You're right, the 3-beeps indicate bad RAM. I've never had a problem with Apple provided RAM or any RAM that I've installed myself, for that matter. You're well within your 14-day 'grace period' to have your MBP replaced and that's what I would insist upon. Don't let them just try to reseat the RAM or put in new sticks - get a completely new machine.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • After upgrading to ML, now a RAM Failure

I have a 2009 MacBook Pro. I use it for my business in a retail store.  I upgraded it 2 months ago from 4gb to 8gb RAM.  I even made sure the RAM was compatible.  It is not made by Apple (RAM).  Today I upgraded to Mountain Lion, and the computer won't turn on.  When I try, it makes 3 loud beeps continuously.  I tried to re-seat the RAM, with no luck.  If i put the old 4gb (2  2GB sticks) RAM in, the computer boots fine and Mountain Lion runs.  If I try to return to the upgraded RAM, it will not boot but give me a RAM failure audible beep.  The 4GB is TOO SLOW!  I'd rather have 8GB of RAM running on Lion then 4GB running on Mountain Lion.  Has anyone had this issue or have any suggestions?  I NEED this computer for my business and its SUPER important.  I actually use it as my register.  PLEASE!!

I can't tell if its Value RAM or just regular.  It doesnt say Value on it.  As for an update, I have reset the PRAM and SMC with no luck.  The only thing that does work, is leaving (1) of the old 2 GB sticks in with (1) of the new 4GB sticks.  This for some reason works and the machine is testing OK with 6 GB of RAM.  However, once I try to place the other new 4 GB stick in for the complete 8GB upgrade, I get the 3 Beep RAM failure on startup.  Anyone have any ideas ?
Yes, return the Kingston Ram and order from www.crucial.com or www.macsales.com, reports of problems with Kingston Ram are commonplace.

  • Ram preview is short?

Why is Ram preview so short? i get maybe 2 min of preview time at 1/2 res 1092x1080 on a new Mac Pro with 32GB of Ram! It seems if AE is out of RAM it could render to the SSd or any hard drive and playback 30 min of footage but no i only get 2 min, anyone know if this camn be fixed? I have disk Cache enabled and set to 72GB, I thought this was suppose to fix this?
    Thanks, Mark

    Hi Rick,
This has been an issue since I cam remember, CS4 possibly earlier, i am using the latest CC now and on a new Mac Pro i don't see why this is still a limitation.
Mentioned above I have disk Cache enabled and set to 72GB, Caching on the 1TB internal Mac Pro SSD. If I render out the clip full res it only uses 6GB of space and I have the comp set to 1/2 res. It is a simple panning background made up of about 20 PS layers, very simple, I don't know why that would make a difference, isn't Ram preview just rendering the frames out to ram? If there is movement it renders a new frame right? and there is movement in every frame. CPU is not my issue, it is the length of the timeline Ram preview will render (not how long it takes). Why can it Ram preview 30 min of footage if needed to my SSD and play it back? It seems like it would be  simple!
    Thanks, Mark

  • Onboard RAM Failure

My ibook started acting like a dinosaur a few weeks ago, and I finally nailed the problem down: The onboard 256Mb of RAM is bad, and is no longer recognized by the operating system. The computer is much slower now, as it is only recognizing the additional 256M chip, and it is also far far less stable than it used to be.
Would buying a 512 or 1gb chip be a really smart way to speed things up and keep my computer running? Or would it just be delaying the inevitable when one day it won't boot at all? Will it improve the stability of the system? Should I just replace the logic board entirely?
Any insight or experience would be much appreciated.
    14" iBook 1.33   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

A defective RAM chip may be having an effect on the iBook besides just not being recognized. It could certainly be causing other problems as well. I would recommend you get it repaired/replaced. You can never have too much RAM, adding some more now might get you by for a little while longer. But the RAM failure could be a sign of other problems with your logic board.

I was only able to print one page and then both my printer and my computer would display an error message about the printer's inability to print.  Since then I've been able to resolve my specific problem.
    I
    1. uninstalled HP from my computer (checked to ensure that my printer was no longer visible in my printers and the HP Utility software was nowhere to be found),
    2. grabbed the software/driver update from Aug, 2010,
    3. installed the Aug, 2010 update, and my problems seem to have been fixed.
This is where I got my 2010 update from (obviously you should get the driver/software applicable to your OS and specific printer):

  • Fatal: Communication Failure: The computer is no longer able to communicate

    I was printing some documents and was doing great, all of a sudden the printer stopped and started showing this message;
+"fatal: Communication Failure: The computer is no longer able to communicate with your printer. Turn the printer off, check your printer connections and check for printer errors, and turn the printer back on."+
(the printer is a HP Photosmart 7760).
I've done everything I could think of to fix the problem but nothing (deleted the printer, re-added it, downloaded the new driver from the website, turned off and back on, re-started the computer) but then, I really really screwed things up when I went and deleted the "PrintJobMgr/Contents/MacOS/PrintJobMgr"
Wow! How smart. Now I'm trying to restore that file. I've looked in the internet to see if it is available, I got it from a friend but it doesn't work..
Please, can somebody tell me what can I do at this point.
Oh, I forgot to mention that the printer is connected to my Airport Extreme Router.
    Help!

It sounds like you need to do a reinstall to get the PrintJobMgr back. I don't think you can use Pacifist (versiontracker.com) to install this separately, but it might be worth a try.
Reinstalling the PrintJobMgr should get you back to where you started. At this point, I would disconnect all the cables, turn off the printer, let it sit for a bit, then reconnect and power up the printer.
    Hope this helps.

Hello, I have a HP Officejet J6480 All-in-One printer.  When I try to print, I receive this error message:
"Communication Failure: The computer is no longer able to communicate with your printer. Turn the printer off, check your printer connections and check for printer errors, and turn the printer back on."
I am using a Mac PowerBook G4, OS v10.5.7.  I have tried the following:
    -- rebooted my Mac
    -- turned printer off/on
    -- rebooted wireless router
-- tried to print using USB cable.
I continue to receive the same error message. Helllllllllllllllp!!!!
A couple of other things I need to mention:  I bought this printer in June and have been able to print just fine since purchasing
this printer. As recently as Friday, July 3, I was able to print and printed 6 or 7 pages then.  This is CRAZY!!!!
    Thanks.

  • After upgrading from Win 8 to 8.1 my DVD RAM GT80N SATA Drive is no longer working

After upgrading from Win 8 to 8.1 my  DVD RAM GT80N SATA Drive is no longer recognizing discs. When I first put a disc in the drive runs for a bit and then stops. I've tried updating the driver but it says it has the most current driver. Under manage, it does not show any error codes and it says it is working correctly. I've looked at the regedit and it does not have any of upper and lower filters. I've tried disabling, rebooting, and reenabling. What am I missing? Another issue I've had since upgrading is that my network adapter needs reset several times a day in order to remain connected to wifi.

  • RAM failure as one possible reason for MBP not booting up

    Hello,
Just moving from an HP Win 7 laptop and got a brand new 11' MBP a month ago, which I must say was a bit disappointing in terms of overall performance, as I was clearly expecting more from a Mac.
Yesterday, after it went off out of battery, could not boot it back up despite plugging the charger: black screen, little white light on but nothing else. Tried anything I could find on this community pages (hard reboot, SMC, etc) without any success.
My IT support came this morning, and removed one of the two 4 Go RAM barr (from Samsung) and it rebooted magically. Apparently this is their second case of RAM failure on new MBP in 24 hours
Besides, I am now experiencing with a much faster computer on 4 Go of RAM instead of 8.
Bottom line, some recent Macs may have been equipped with defective RAM chips, you may want to consider this if running into a laptopt that stops bootting up.
    Hope this helps
    Cheers
    Raphaël

I just noticed you said you'd erased your hard drive. That might be why there is nothing to see.
OK, try this -insert a system CD then power off. Switch on and hold down the alt key. Do you get the grey screen but with no drives appearing? If so, is the CD/DVD drive spinning and making a noise?
Wait for a minute or so and see if the CD/DVD appears on the screen as a boot option once it gets up to speed. It won't appear instantly.
if it does select it and see what happens. be patient. A boot DVD will be slow but you should hear the drive going if it's loading the software.

  • 3 beeps on start up, RAM failure?

I have seen some older posts similar to this, however they all seemed to be more for tech savvy people unlike me. 6 weeks ago a connector cable in my hard drive failed and when I got it back from the shop the next day the MacBook Pro randomly shut down and restarted with a message saying an error occurred. This happened a three more times  over the next couple weeks, but then stopped. Until just now when it happened again, the computer restarted then random fuzzy green lines came across the screen. The computer restarted again and the beeps began. 3 consecutive beeps that repeat themselves every few seconds. I manually shut the computer down and turned it on again and I got to the load screen with the apple, then black lines came across the screen. The screen then went fully black and the beeping started... Any ideas?

  • Machine thinks RAM is incompatible (two beeps, loud fan, no video)

The Problem: computer will not boot, gives two beeps and fans run full blast. The status codes indicate not that the ram is bad, but that it is not compatible with my machine.
Background: My PowerMac G5 1.8 Single (Late 2004) has been collecting dust for the past two years, so I decided to make use of it and turn it into a media hub. I basically dismantled it and dusted all the parts (I know what I'm doing for the most part) and put it all back together. I wiped the hard drive before doing this so there is no OS installed.
Now when I turn on the computer, I hear two beeps, the fans go full blast, and no video. The power button LED blinks twice, pauses, then repeats until I turn off the computer. I am using the same RAM, so I know it is compatible.
I have tried resetting the SMU, taking the RAM out and replacing it, installing the ram it in every possible configuration (2 512 mb sticks and 4 slots), and ensured that it is in correctly. I can't install OS X because I cannot get picture, nor does the optical drive open.
The blinking power light indicates there is a problem with the ram, but my experience (experience of only upgrading RAM and NEVER needing to replace it) makes me want to look for other causes before I order some new RAM. I tried resetting the SMU, but I'm not convinced that it worked, especially since my model doesn't appear to have SMU or PMU reset buttons. Apple says to turn off the computer and unplug the power cord for two minutes instead.
I should also add that none of the status lights around the memory slots are lit up, but there is a solid red light coming from the top corner of the motherboard just above the expansion slots. I have yet to discover if this means anything.
Any suggestions would be greeaattly appreciated
    Thanks,
    Jack

Are you positive you've installed the two RAM sticks in the innermost slots of each bank of slots as shown in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2248

  • MacBook Pro with 13-inch Retina Display RAM Failure?

    Hi there!
I just bought a new MacBook Pro with 13-inch Retina Display on Christmas at an Apple Retail Store, and I was experiencing some lag.  The lag occurred when creating simple graphical animations, like swiping to reveal Mission Control.  So I took it in.  The diagnostics were fine, so they said that they'd try and repair it.  After a few days, I got a call and they told me that I have bad RAM.  And being a computer freak, I understand that it is part of the lo-bo.  Now they have to order an entirely new logic board, and I have to wait even longer.
For $1700, that was disappointing.  Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Well, I was told that nobody in the Apple Retail Store had seen this specific problem before.  I couldn't find anything on the Internet either.  I wanted to know if there was someone else who's MacBook Pro with 13-inch Retina Display's Hynix RAM slowed down graphical performance, because it sounds odd.  I am aware that defects are common, but this seems, again, particularly queer.

    Hi KELoPV
I've seen a limited selection of 1GB PC2-5300 677MHz ram modules for sale at other electronic's retailers like BestBuy, Office Max and Staples.
But by far the best deal is the 2GB kit at OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/53DR2SPAIR2G/
The Early Core Duo has a 2GB ram limit, 2 1GB ram modules and the iMac's are user upgradable.

  • Apple  Care Tech Tool disk indicates video ram failure

I have a MBP purchased in 3/08 - 2.4 with 256MB GeForce 8600M and the tech tool disc keeps telling me the video ram failed the test process. What does this mean and could this explain the pages taking so long to load in safari that have pictures and video? Safari on certain web site pages will sit there in a continuous loading position. The status bar will progress about 1 inch and never move again or load the page. I have to continuously keep reloading the page until it will finally complete the page. Even then half the pictures will not load. This started about a month ago, which is why I bought the apple care.
    Thanks

It means the video RAM has failed. Take it in for service.
