RAM for a D20

Do you have to use RDIMM ram? Because I dont really have the budget to pay for it, so is it possible to use DIMM or even SDRAM?
Solved!
Go to Solution.

Yes.  Both UDIMM and RDIMM are supported on D20.  They cannot be mixed within the system (i.e. all DIMMs must be UDIMM or all DIMMs must be RDIMM).

  • Are there suggestions for managing Multiple VMWare Fusion systems sharing files with a MacBook?  Suppose I have enough ram for 3 servers to share files.

Suppose I have enough ram for 2 or three VMWare fusion systems to that could benefit from file sharing.  Is it possible to configiure each VMWare funsion instance to have a common read only file share on my desktop and a common read/write area on on my desktop?
This would allow me to extend the power and mustle of my Mac Book Air, Retina Display system to its best advantage.  Whether native Mac processing or speciality linux or Windows systems as needed.
I am having trouble allowing more than one system to share the same read only and the same read/write areas so that software does the file locking and merge controls.  Even if these do not share a common read/write area, it would be truly handy for drive space management for them to share a common read only area.
    Thanks for your thoughtful input.

It really denpends on the os running in the vm and what the permissions are set to on those shares.
I run a few vms on both a mac at home and windows at work and all other computers in my home or at work can connect to the vms without any problems. Even multiple computer at the same time.
It also depends on how you have set the vm up for networking. If you are setting it up as nat, instead of bridged, that can also cause problems access it from multiple system. With nat the vm is on its own network branch.

  • How can i allocate more RAM for my onboard video card on a 2011 macbook pro 13 inch running windows 7 via bootcamp

I noticed that since Macbooks.. macs in general use an EFI instead of BIOS.  . .. Now i need to allocate some more RAM for the onboard video card since its currently running with an estimated 50mb.. I would like to increase this to 512  and cut the 3.95 down to 3.5 MB for the rest of the system ( allowing me to run more graphic intensive games and the such ... ) I know this could slow down the entire system.. ( i am aware of this ) and have gotten a 3rd party application to control and close out uneeded processes during gaming.. I just need more ram for my onboard video card.. Any help?

You don't allocate more RAM towards your video card, you put more RAM into the machine and hopefully some machines will bump the CPU graphics RAM allocation up a little.
The problem is you bought a integrated only graphics computer, if you want to 3D game you need a dedicated graphics computer with it's own or dedicated VRAM.
If your this serious about 3D gaming, your on the wrong platform.
Get a Windows 7 64bit i7 8GB RAM expandable 3D gaming tower with a good power supply and video card upgrade path, this way every few years you buy and stick in a new video card to play the latest games.
Mac's are not gaming machines and never will be because they would last too long if we could upgrade them.

  • Bought ram for Macbook 4,1 and wont boot up

Hey guys i just bought some new ram to upgrade my macbook 2.1 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and it says its the right ram for it but it doesnt boot up. the RAM i bought is 2GB PC5300/667Mhz DDR2. i bought 2 modules to equal 4GB and it doesnt boot. i tried one stick, both sticks, one new and one old, still nothing. the disk drive runs but thats all. So either i got bad ram or they labled it wrong? What can i do besides return it?

If you bought your RAM at a place that also sells PC RAM you may have gotten mislabelled RAM. PCs can handle different RAM speeds so they’ll often label higher speed RAM as a lower speed rather than make two different speeds of RAM. But Macs are much more picky. They require a RAM stick to be exactly 667mhz not 675mhz or 800mhz. The way to tell is to put one of your old RAM sticks in and it will force the new RAM to run at the correct speed.
This is from one review of PNY RAM:
"These modules are actually 800Mhz. PNY no longer makes or sells 667Mhz modules. Not all computers that require 667Mhz are compatible with 2 800Mhz modules. They refuse to down clock properly. This is especially true with a number of Core 2 Duo MacBooks. Spoke to PNY support, they flat out told me that yes, they sell 800Mhz modules in 667Mhz packaging. If you RMA a module that is 667Mhz (or supposed to be 667Mhz) they will replace it with an 800Mhz module as they no longer have any 667Mhz SODIMMs, not even for RMA replacement!"

  • Ram for G3 RevA Mini-Tower

Hello all again. Next ussue: want to upgrade from 320ram to 512 or more. I once a while ago installed a 256mb stick to upgrade to 320mb, recently got another from the local mac guy, PC100, 256mb, and the Mac only reads it as 128mb. What's up with that? And what do I need? And where do I find it?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi James,
I wager the chip that shows up at 1/2 its rated size in a hi-density module, with eight devices only on one side. A 256MB module for the Beige needs low-density or 8 devices on EACH side.
I've used one company, Data Memory Systems, exclusively for RAM for over three years and can't complain a bit. I get PC100 RAM by choosing the Blue & White G3 from their selector:
    http://www.datamemorysystems.com/memory-information/256MB_SDRAM_PC100_CL2_DIMM_Apple555.asp
This works great in my Beige G3 and the price is pretty good.

  • RAM for 2003 Power Mac?

I am selling 2GB - (4) 512 MB DDR DIMM,P RAM for Power Mac G5 (2005) on ebay since I upgraded to more RAM. Someone asked me if this would work on their Power Mac G5 from 2003. I wasn't sure. Any advice? Thanks!

I would go to http://www.crucial.com/ and select the the specs for by model and processor speed to see if they match up with your ram. I am a PC Tech and I use this site frequently for max ammount ram, number of memory banks and so on. The ram Crucial sold me for my Dual Core G5 works rock solid so I trust thier research.

  • What Exactly are the Benefits of More GPU RAM for PP, AE, PS ?

What benefit is there to having, say 4gb GPU RAM over 2gb ?
I have read numerous conflicting, and perhaps misguided, claims regarding when/why one would rather have a graphics card with more than 2gb RAM.
Does this impact effects render, multiple monitor resolution, CUDA, Mercury Playback Engine performance, other areas, etc. and how?
    Thanks for your response.
    A Ajar

2GB of video ram is more than enough for the Hardware MPE engine and 1080 media with effects. Essentially the greater the ram space on the video card the greater ram caching available for the Cuda acceleration to buffer data ready for GPU processing. The Application memory management ie caching profiles though effect this based on each codec and resolution ie data per frame. However along with this you have to have enough system ram to create the buffers used to cache the data down to the GPU ram since that data shadows down for GPU processing and then back again for final encoding. This means that not configuring enough system ram will limit the amount of GPU ram used. Hence why you want atleast 16GB of ram for HD and the hardware MPE engine. 3GB+ ram spaces on video cards are for 2K to 4K + frame sizes ie R3D and Raw/CinemaDng. This is because the data per frame multiplies significantly when at 4K resolution. This require far greater ram space which is why you look for the 3GB+ ram space cards for those workflows. The Effect data will also increase because there is far mroe resolution data to alter. This is on top of the drawing out data which is what you see on the screen. That is when the differences for the cards show.

  • Can I use this ram for my MacBook?

    I want this ram,
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231154

  • Max ram for 2.4ghz 2008 model intel imac 24"?

      Hi.
Im trying to get the max ammount of ram in my imac 24" 2008 model aluminum body i believe. it has 2.4ghz intel core 2 duo. and its running mac os x 10.5.8
I want to get the highest ammount of ram my machine can handle. I know apple says 4gb is max, but im wondering if anyone has put in 8gb and it works?
also could you tell me what the ram is called exactly so I can type it in to amazon and find the correct kind. Please help me on this issue! I want the MAXIMUM ram for my imac!!! Thanks all!
Also, would it be worth upgraded to snow leopard? Im new to macs and dont know if that would make a difference? Give me your opinions on this and I'll do as you say for you are more knowledgable then I at macs! thanks again.
And what all can I download for my machine in terms of operating systems to make it the most current my machine can run at? can I install lion after leopard on my machine?

The maximum you can put in is 6GB, that is all that machine can address. WWW.MacSales.com (OWC) makes a 6GB kit and I'd recommend purchasing from them. Your machine could be a late 2007 or mid (began shipping in April) 2008. You will need to check the specifications which you can find in your owners manual or click Support in the upper right of this page then click Tech Specs. OWC is the only vendor I know that makes a 6GB kit however if you have the correct specs you can make your own, a 1x2GB DIMM and a 1X4GB DIMM. You don't mention where on the planet you're located, OWC is a US company but will ship overseas.

  • Cheaper RAM for iMac G5

I was searching and searching for cheap RAM for my iMac. It seems most places sale RAM for Macintosh computers but charge up the butt for it. Mac comps, or atleast the iMac G5, use what should be cheaper CAS3 memory. While searching I found most places were selling 1GB sticks of "Mac" RAM for $130 or more. I found the memory configurator on Patriot Memory's website and found this model stick of 1GB RAM to be compatible with the iMac G5 2Ghz, PSD1G400. I got two pieces shipped for $212 (not from Patriot but a reseller). I found most other websites' memory configurator will have a 1GB stick of "Mac" RAM and then another stick of 1GB CAS3 RAM for alot cheaper but wouldn't confirm the 1GB CAS3 RAM as compatible for Mac. These websites also would not list the specs of the "Mac" RAM. Who knows. The "Mac" RAM might be the same as the other RAM but they just want to sell it for more. I haven't recieved my 2 sticks of RAM yet but I'll keep everyone posted on how it turns out.

Mac-specific RAM was available in recent months for the same price that you have quoted. Apparently RAM prices, both generic and Mac-specific, have risen since then. Prices will fall at some point in the future. I have tried generic RAM in my iMac G5 and had no problem with it. I got a nice sized rebate when I bought it. Some others have claimed to have had problems with generic RAM, however.

  • I bought a new 13 macbook pro with 4gb and would like to get aperture 3.4.3.  Will it require too much ram for my computer?  Thanks

I just bought a macbook pro 13" with 4gb and would like to get aperture on it.  Will aperture require too much ram for my computer?  Thanks for any support.

    I just bought a macbook pro 13" with 4gb
I have been using Aperture on such a system, and it was o.k. with Snowleopard and moderately sized images. After I upgraded to Lion and started to user larger image files - 30 MB tiffs, I saw the occasional beachball spinning. You should be prepared to quit other applications that will hog the RAM (like Safari), when working with Aperture on Lion or Mt. Lion with only 4 GB. If you can, follow Frank Caggiano's recommendation and upgrade to 8GB. It will make a large difference.

  • The amount of ram for g4/800

ok so i took my g4 imac to our local mac shop, and tried to get up to 1gb of ram, when i went to the "about this mac" it said it had 512mb so i had to get another 512mb for 1 gig. no big deal. so i go to the store and when i get it back it only has 768mb, and they said it really only had 256mb of ram for some reason. and they said you cannot get 1gb of ram. is this true? ive been looking around these forums but nothing seems to clearly answer my question?

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The iMac G4 is a funny beast when it comes to RAM. There are two RAM slots one called "user-accessible" and the other "factory-accessible". Apple installed all the RAM originally ordered in the "factory-accessible" slot so you would have 128MB, 256MB or 512MB installed in there.
The "user-accessible" slot would be empty for users to upgrade at a later date.
I suspect that you had a 256MB in the 'factory' slot and a 256MB in the 'user' slot when the shop upgraded they only replaced the 'user' with a 512MB to give you that 768MB total. For anyone who knows iMac G4s, upgrading the 'factory' slot is not difficult I took the photo above for example.
I hope the store didn't charge you a fitting charge for the user-slot installation and it's a two minute job that anyone is capable of. The factory slot installation is probably a thirty-minute job and is more complex.
To confirm my suspicions have a look in  menu > About this Mac > More Info...:
    Check you have a 256MB and 512MB.
    cheers

  • Ram for the iMAC 2.16 Intel Core 2 Duo

Perhaps someone could enlighten me as to why there are no listings for ram for the machine affore mentioned? I go to the apple store and click on memory and the closest listing I see for my system is 2.0GHz. Does this mean that I can use the same memory that is listed for the 2.0GHz in my 2.16GHz machine?
    T.I.A.
    Lonnie

Yes that thought had occured to me as well. That's probably what I will do. I don't relish the thought of having to try to get rid of 2x512 sticks and 1x1G stick after upgrading to the 1x2G stick. I think I got all that right 2x512 now equaling 1G. Purchase 2x1G ticks to have 2G. Then upgrade to 1x2G stick and keeping 1 of the 1x1G sticks to go with the newly purchased 1x2G stick...whew what a mouthfull
