RAM from Powerbook to iMac?

Hey everyone.
A couple of months ago my Powerbook got so hot that some parts of the metal to the screen got soft and so when I turned down the screen it cracked. And so the wires were free and the screen did not last long. But Im not here to complain about the cooling ability of Powerbooks, because now I have gotten a new computer, an iMac.
And I was just wondering if I can take memory from the Powerbook (and other stuff that might be useful too) and put it in my iMac?

You can certainly sell parts so that others can use them to repair their PowerBooks, but the display, memory, hard drive, AirPort card, keyboard keys, etc. will not transfer into an Intel-based iMac, or even into a MacBook or MacBook Pro. Size, types, speeds are different.
There are usually numerous buyers looking for distressed, damaged or non-working Macs of all kinds. While some are looking for certain parts, repair shops like to buy the whole unit and disassemble it themselves to be certain there's no damage done in that process. They put the parts that aren't immediately needed on their shelves for future use.
edit- You could use the hard drive in an external case with your new iMac, but the small size of notebook hard drives makes them more valuable as replacment parts, and less valuable as supplementary storage.

Trying to connect my iMac to on 10.8.2 with PowerBook Intel on 10.5.8; sharing works from PowerBook to iMac but not the other way around. Why?

Thanks for the interest. Preferences are similar on both machines: screen sharing, file sharing, printer sharing & scanner sharing all ticked and radio button for Screen Sharing is ON.
My confusion is that I can get a network connection to the iMac by selecting "go to server" on the PowerMac running 10.5.8 but am unable to make the iMac connect to the PowerMac using similar selections. When ethernet cable is plugged in the PowerMac shows up on the finder bar on the iMac, but it does not allow either screen sharing or connection to occur - a dialog box tells me to check System Prefs and Network connection.
I'm hoping to export a large file of photos from iPhoto on my iMac to my wife's PowerMac and hoped to achieve this with an ethernet network connection.

  • RAM from Powerbook for Macbook

    I have a Powerbook G4 Ti 15"
Can I use the RAM from it to replace the RAM in my Macbook?
    Andrea

The Powerbook Titanium does have SD-RAM and the Macbook DDR-RAM, you can not exchange them!
    These are the exact specifications:
    Powerbook Titanium:
    PC133 SO-DIMM SD-RAM 133Mhz
    Macbook:
    PC-5300 SO-DIMM DDR2-RAM 667MHz 200 Pin
So it is just not possible! Only way to add more memory in the Macbook is to buy it with exact the specifications i mentioned above! Otherwise it will not work and fit!
Hopefully this is helpfull or solved your problem. Consider rewarding some points!

  • RAM from Powerbook vs. RAM for MacBook

Because Apple could not repair my Powerbook 17-inch, they replaced it with a new MacBook Pro. Now I have 2 GB of RAM I had installed in the Powerbook that I'd like to sell or trade for additional RAM for the MacBook. (I assume that the PC2-4200 from the Powerbook is not compatible with the MacBook -- please advise if that's incorrect.) How do I get some value out of the practically brand-new RAM from the Powerbook (which cost me $310 new in 11/2005)? I assume that the best way to get an additional 1 GB of RAM into the the new MacBook is simply to buy the appropriate RAM chip and install it -- but I'd appreciate any suggestions on that too.

You're correct,The PowerBook RAM is not compatible with the MBP.
As far as selling the old RAM,Ebay is an option.
Although I seriously doubt you'll get anywhere near what you payed for it.

  • Taking RAM from old 24" iMac and switching it to other Macs.

    Hello there,
My old 24" iMac was damaged beyond repair and It's been replaced by my insurance company with a brand new 21.5 inch model. This is great, but I was wondering if I could take the RAM from the old mac and put it in the new. The old mac in only fit for spares - the logic board has gone.
My old iMac was a 24inch model purchased in October 2008. It had 4 gig of RAM fitted by Apple from the outset. So, potentially, I have 4 gigs of RAM that I could put in my new iMac that has 4 gig as well - pushing it up to 8. Will it fit, or is the hardware incompatible?
Alternatively, I also have a white Macbook that was purchased 18 months ago. It has 2 gigs of RAM that were also fitted by Apple. Could this benefit from any of the old iMac's RAM? As a slower machine it might benefit from it more.
Any help gratefully received. Thanks for reading.

  • Moving Applications & Data from PowerBook to iMac?

    Hi!
I just got my PowerBook all set up with Tiger and have iLife '06 ordered.
Once it arrives and is installed on the PowerBook along with all of my other Apps etc ... , I would like to copy it ALL to my iMac so that match perfectly.
When I copy (SuperDuper) the HardDrive to a Firewire Drive (OWC) and restore it on my iMac, the pages are all the wrong size.
It's like it's still using a PowerBook Screen as the aspect ratios are different.
Is there a way to correct this or what else can I do to maintain the iMac Aspect Ratio and Displays Appearance?
    Thanks

Since you are cloning the drive, you are making an exact copy including all the screen prefs and everything. I do not think that there is a way to exclude those prefs from the clone.
Someone else might chime in, but I think the only thing you can do is adjust the sizes of the window pages manually.

  • PLEASE HELP!!! Error - 36 when copying from powerbook to iMac/Lacie HDs

I'm working on a film and have captured to my powerbook G4 in FCP. I am now trying to transfer my scratch disk to either my iMac (intel 2.4GHz) or my Lacie HD extreme 500 GB / Lacie 250 GB.
When I drag the folder over, it starts copying and then at some point (normally about half way through) it says:
"The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in shot 9 could not be read or written (error cose -36)"
It does this for a number of different files in the folder. I have tried copying them one by one, and a few will copy then I'll get to a file and the same error will occur. The files on the powerbook are intact and open and play as expected. I have tried using my powerbook in TD mode with iMac and linking to both Lacie drives with FW400, FW800 and USB.
I haven't tried copying over my network yet but am reluctant to do this as firstly there is over 30GB of material and secondly I worry about the accuracy of a copy over wifi.
I recently had my logic board replaced on powerbook and have done an erase and install of OSX Leopard and am running 10.5.6 on both machines.
I found very little on these boards about error 36 and so would massively appreciate any help on this - this is my first really important scary project and I have a looming deadline!!!
    Cheers

You should use Disk Utility to verify both the source and destination disks. Post the error messages here if you see any.
How is the LaCie formatted? It really should be Mac OS Extended. FAT formatted disks have file size limitations which can cause all kind of problems.

    Joey,
A -36 error is an I/O error. My first though would be a bad cable, but you have apparently tried several of these, over several different busses (the buss could also be a culprit). That leaves a potential disk error.
OK, so you captured this footage on the Powerbook. You did this post-format/reinstall, right? You captured this to the Powerbook's internal drive, right? DV footage (or worse, HD footage) uses huge amounts of disk space. How much? How close to completely full is this internal hard drive? If you allowed the available space to approach zero, especially when running something like FCP, this may have caused the disk error.
Assuming you still have some space left on the Powerbook's internal drive, are you able to make an internal copy of one of these "troublesome" files using just the Powerbook in isolation? If not, and where you cannot, you have a corrupted file. Corrupted by a disk error. Yes, you may be able to access them just fine, and they may actually play within FCP, but they are incomplete in some way; they are missing some bytes, Kbytes, or Mbytes. If you find this to be the case, you might consider that you need to re-capture.
If they can be copied internally, there is probably something else going on here. If they can be copied internally, you should be able to copy them to some external media.

  • Copying iTunes files and playlists from Powerbook to iMac

I've got a load of songs and playlists set up on my Powerbook and I want to copy them all across to my iMac.
What's the most straightforward way of doing this, ensuring that both the playlists and song files are copied across?
Copyright/copy protection isn't an issue as none of it is commercial stuff.

Probably the most straightforward way to get iTunes onto your new computer is to network the two and copy your iTunes folder across. This works fine if you have been using iTunes to completely manage your music and all your songs are in iTunes Music not in different folders. Connecting two Mac computers using Ethernet
Another way is to put your original computer into target disk mode and copy the data over Firewire: How to use FireWire target disk mode
Copying the whole folder brings with it the iTunes Music folder and also the iTunes Library (iTunes Library.itl in Windows) database file which holds all the information about your songs (Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, Last Played, Date Added, etc). You'll get more information including the Folder/File structure in this article: What are the iTunes library files?
When you copy the iTunes folder make sure you put it into the same location on the new computer. This has to be the exact same place, on a Mac this would be in Username/Music/. When you open iTunes on the new computer it will be the same as on the original one Songs, Playlists, Play Counts, Ratings etc. When I moved iTunes a while ago for my daughter I was also using the same version of iTunes, not sure how important that is but it's probably worth keeping them the same.

  • Switching from Powerbook to iMac.

I have two ATVs synced to a Powerbook running Tiger. The iTunes files are held on an external 500GB drive. I propose replacing the Powerbook with an iMac running Leopard housing the iTunes files on the internal drive, using the external drive for Time Machine backup. My concern is that I could lose all the files on the ATVs during the switch. What are the potential pitfalls, and how do I avoid them?

I may be wrong, but my understanding is that when you set up to sync to the new iTunes instance on a new Mac, then AppleTV would just assume different Mac, different library, start to sync afresh.
It probably depends what holds known AppleTV device parameters - if it's in the iTunes library and you transfer that befor connecting to AppleTV it might work, but say the known AppleTVs are held outside the music library, then I'd imagine you'd have to set up the AppleTV to sync with a new iTunes instance and that would mess things up.
As you have the original files the worst case would be AppleTV resyncing the lot wouldn't it?
As far as finding the 'same files', it's hard to know if it's iTunes or AppleTv that maintains a list of what's synced and what that list holds. If it were an absolute address list then the files would no longer be where expected, but if relative to the iTunes library they'd be the same.

  • Is it possible to use the ram from a macbook in a iMac?

I am installing new ram on my Early 2011 Macbook Pro (2.3 Ghz., 13 inch, os x 10.9.4). Can I install the old ram from my Macbook Pro into a Mid-2011 iMac(2.7 Ghz., 27 inch, os x 10.9.4)? These links show the ram specs, and they look identical to me. iMac: How to remove or install memory  MacBook Pro: How to remove or install memory

Yes, it is the same spec.
    MacBook Pro:
    Maximum Memory
16 GB (Actual) 8 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    2 - 204-pin PC-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
    iMac:

I have a late 2012 iMac and a late 2009 mac mini.  I want to know if I can take the 8 GB of ram from the iMac and install it in my mac mini.
According to Cruicial my mac mini could use:
    Module Size: 8GB Kit (4GBx2)
    Package: 204-pin SODIMM
    Feature: DDR3 PC3-8500
    Specs: DDR3 PC3-8500 • CL=7 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1066 • 1.35V • 512Meg x 64
Also According to Cruical my iMac uses:
    Module Size: 8GB Kit (4GBx2)
    Package: 204-pin SODIMM
    Feature: DDR3 PC3-12800
    Specs: DDR3 PC3-12800 • CL=11 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR3-1600 • 1.35V
I want to increase the ram in both computers.
So,  can I put the iMac ram in my mac mini and then I'd only have to buy ram for my iMac?  Naturally the ulitmate test will be when I actually install it,  but having an expectation of success or failure will allow me to plan on what to spend money on.
    Thanks,
    Bear

Thanks for the responses.  I probably wont even try as my priority is Ram for the mac mini.  2 is not enough.  8 for my imac is okay for now.
Somewhere I thought I'd heard that faster Ram would simply clock at the lower speed.  It seems that I am incorrect.
    Thanks,

  • Network disappears completely from Airport on iMAC, G4 Powerbook +iPhone 4

    Can anybody please help..!
My network has disappeared completely from Airport on iMAC, G4 Powerbook + iPhone 4 and even after restarting the router several times the network does not reappear. It's been 2 days now and i need it to work from home urgently.
    thanks in advance !

    Hi Shane
if it's missing from three devices, I imagine that you may need to connect to it via ethernet cable & see if the wireless id is set to be hidden, as well as checking the setup pages to see if wireless is actually operating correctly.
Something like iStumbler or WiFi Scanner should help you determine that too.

  • Migration from powerbook 10.4.11 to imac 10.6.8

Migrating from Powerbook G4 10.4.11 (cannot upgrade beyond this release). Migrating to a new iMac 10.6.8. Problem: both computers are on the same wireless network. Start Migration Assistant on iMac then on Powerbook. Select "From another Mac" on iMac and "To another Mac" on Powerbook. Powerbook sees iMac, offers passcode entry field. Enter Passcode from iMac into Powerbook Passcode field. iMac displays "processing information ...". Powerbook does same. After 10seconds Powerbook displays the Passcode entry field again. Enter the same Passcode from the iMac into the Powerbook Passcode entry field. Powerbook displays "searching for other computers ...". iMac displays "processing information ...". After a few minutes, iMac displays dropdown box stating "connection to other Mac failed" (or similar wording) while Powerbook continues "searching for other computers ..." and iMac Migration Assistant main dialog box continues "processing information ...".
Any help solving this problem will be much appreciated.
    Steve

Steve your first mistake is attempting to do this wirelessly. If you can get it to start expect the migration to take a week or more. The easiest way is to connect the two together via Firewire with a cable like this which you can find at your local computer store, Radio Shack or of course Amazon. This assumes the Powerbook has Firewire, if it doesn't then create a bootable clone on an external HD. You will use either SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to create the bootable clone. Then instead of using Migration Assistant use Setup Assistant which you ignored when you turned on the new iMac for the first time, this mean you will need to start over. Please read Setup Assistant tips for detailed instructions beginning at "Second Chance..."
Finally when you are migrating I would strongly recommend not migrating your Applications because you are moving from a PPC based machine to Intel. You may have apps that don't run on Intel or simply need to be updated to do so. This is your opportunity to update Apps and get current.
Migration Assistant and Setup Assistant are cousins, similar but different. First is SA is more reliable and second it does not create a second user account.
