RAM from Powerbook vs. RAM for MacBook

Because Apple could not repair my Powerbook 17-inch, they replaced it with a new MacBook Pro. Now I have 2 GB of RAM I had installed in the Powerbook that I'd like to sell or trade for additional RAM for the MacBook. (I assume that the PC2-4200 from the Powerbook is not compatible with the MacBook -- please advise if that's incorrect.) How do I get some value out of the practically brand-new RAM from the Powerbook (which cost me $310 new in 11/2005)? I assume that the best way to get an additional 1 GB of RAM into the the new MacBook is simply to buy the appropriate RAM chip and install it -- but I'd appreciate any suggestions on that too.

You're correct,The PowerBook RAM is not compatible with the MBP.
As far as selling the old RAM,Ebay is an option.
Although I seriously doubt you'll get anywhere near what you payed for it.
For new RAM,I use and reccommend OWC... http://macsales.com

  • MAXIMUM RAM for MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo Mid 2010

What is the MAXIMUM RAM for MacBook Pro, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Mid 2010 - 24MC374LL/A, running OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)?
I tried to search for this but was unable to find anything.
Apple Specs say 8GB, but I was just told by someone I THINK would know, that you can actually go up to 16GB.
This would be an enormous improvement to my workflow if true.
Anyone out there know for certain?
Making sure before I buy (or NOT!)
    Thanks.

I just found this post and I realize this is a late response but maybe it will help others.
Based on recent circumstances I just happened to have two 8GB DDR3 modules collecting dust. Having an old trusty MacMini as my media center, server among other things and whatnot, I was curious if I could bump this little thing to 16GB. In doing so I found this post and verified with OWC.
    End result:
Booted with no issues, and is running nice and smooth. Should be noted that just adding 16GB of RAM to a Core 2 Duo will not make the machine lightning fast or become some amazing computing platform. It will just make the box run a bit quicker and give you the ability to have more applications open before you begin to note some lag.
However this is really nice to see:

  • Bought ram for Macbook 4,1 and wont boot up

Hey guys i just bought some new ram to upgrade my macbook 2.1 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and it says its the right ram for it but it doesnt boot up. the RAM i bought is 2GB PC5300/667Mhz DDR2. i bought 2 modules to equal 4GB and it doesnt boot. i tried one stick, both sticks, one new and one old, still nothing. the disk drive runs but thats all. So either i got bad ram or they labled it wrong? What can i do besides return it?

If you bought your RAM at a place that also sells PC RAM you may have gotten mislabelled RAM. PCs can handle different RAM speeds so they’ll often label higher speed RAM as a lower speed rather than make two different speeds of RAM. But Macs are much more picky. They require a RAM stick to be exactly 667mhz not 675mhz or 800mhz. The way to tell is to put one of your old RAM sticks in and it will force the new RAM to run at the correct speed.
This is from one review of PNY RAM:
"These modules are actually 800Mhz. PNY no longer makes or sells 667Mhz modules. Not all computers that require 667Mhz are compatible with 2 800Mhz modules. They refuse to down clock properly. This is especially true with a number of Core 2 Duo MacBooks. Spoke to PNY support, they flat out told me that yes, they sell 800Mhz modules in 667Mhz packaging. If you RMA a module that is 667Mhz (or supposed to be 667Mhz) they will replace it with an 800Mhz module as they no longer have any 667Mhz SODIMMs, not even for RMA replacement!"

  • Samsun Ram for Macbook

    Hi
I've just bought 2GB of Samsung Ram for my Macbook and all sorts of funny things happen - not least it restarts itself, crashes and when in Windows 'streaks' fly across the screen from time to time!! Reinstalled old Ram fine - then reinstaleld new Ram -same things happening! So obviously looks like dodgy Ram!
Question then has anybody else found this with Samsung? And is there something am I missing after installing it ie like repairing permissions (done it anyway) etc?
So if you are in the look out for new Ram - Beware of Samsung - unless I have in fact not done something correctly!
    Thanks

You need to call the company you purchased the memory from and get replacements. They may ask you to run some tests, but that is only fair as they will want to make sure it is really bad.
I have purchased memory directly from Crucial and had good experiences. I have also had bad RAM from them. Made the phone call and got the memory replaced. I have purchased memory from OWC and have had good experiences and have had a bad module. Again, a phone call solved everything.
Reputable vendors want your repeat business and will make you whole.

  • What's the maximum memory ram for Macbook Pro?

    Hello,
May I know what's the maximum memory ram capacity for Macbook Pro?
I am having Macbook Pro - 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Thank you!
    Alvin

Hate to resurrect a dead horse but....I was looking in the instructions for memory upgrades and the instructions specified that the computer will only recognize 3 gigs. Will that still be in effect if I upgrade to Snow Leopard when it becomes available? Or do I need to save my pennies for a Mac Pro? What I am getting at is: is the reason for the RAM cap due to software issues, 64 bit not being native, different version of leopard used on notebooks, or is it due to hardware issues.

    Hi
Is it possible to upgrade the 8GB to 16GB RAM for the above mentioned macbook pro?

The Retina display models cannot have the ram upgraded post purchase...the ram modules are soldered to the logic board.

  • Affordable RAM for macbook

i am going to buy a macbook, and was looking into upgrading to the full 2GB of RAM. i obviously don't want to go through apple to do this. where are some places to look for RAM for the Macbook at the cheapest prices?

Another vote here for Patriot. I have two of THESE in my BlackBook - no problems.
I also use Patriot RAM in my first gen G5 iMac. It hasbeen in there since they day I got it and I have never had a RAM related problem.

  • Moving old Time Capsule from PowerBook G4 to New MacBook Pro?

So I finally got a new Mac Book Pro and have been using a PowerBook G4 and backing up using TimeCapsule regularly to a 1 TB external Drive. When I started the MacBook Pro and started steping through the setup pages, I plugged in the external drive when asked if I wanted to migrate my old info from Time Capsule to the MacBook Pro. It seems to have found the Time Capsule files, but it still says searching other sources. It has been doing this for about 3 hours now. Does it normally take this long to migrate the info? Is it just hanging? What can I do to force the issue?
My PowerBook G4 is running 10.5.8 and there are about 5 backups on the external drive for Time Capsule.

Ok, I feel dumb! Just hadn't choosen the source drive...duh!

  • Does more RAM for Macbook mean less battery time???

i am currently using my macbook with 1gb ram, but i am thinking about an upgrade to 2gb. i read and searched the internet for this quest in google, but i didn't get a satisfying answer.
my simple question is: does more ram also need more power and _do i therefore have less battery time?_

BTW: I got my RAM from macsales.com

  • Purchase RAM for Macbook Pro  2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Mid-2009

    Hello,
I need to upgrade the current memory(2 GB) of my Macbook pro (2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Mid-2009) model..Can someone please suggest where I could purchase and what is the maximum and optimal that I could buy.
Also I reside in India, so should I get it online or from the apple store which is like 100 km (nearest) from my place .
    Thanks
    Shubham

You can buy them oniine if you wish to do so.  Buying it from Apple is a good idea but would cost more, and since it's 100km away, after your gas = more money.
The maximum you can install is 8GB.  Your RAM specs are 1333MHz - DDR3 - 204PIN SODIMM.
Check here for current prices online and compare to the price Apple sells them in your area.
If you're not in a big rush - then buying online is a good idea.
    Good luck

  • Best ram for macbook pro 2011?

I am thinking about upgrading my macbook pro 2011 with 8gb or 16gb (overkill?) of ram. Which is the best ram/bang for the buck?

I upgraded to Crucial 16 GB on my MB Pro 6 months ago and have never, ever, even once been sorry or less than amazed.
Of course, a Crucial 512 GB SSD does not hurt, either. They work together seamlessly.  Nice Mac, nice Mac.
12 seconds to boot up from full Shut Down? Too cool ............................................................................... ..
    Leonardosanti says.
PS FYI: My old Apple-supplied 500 GB hard drive is now separately enclosed and makes an excellent full backup. Using SuperDuper to clone, it is bootable albeit as a spinning disc hard drive it runs much slower. Had my old Snow Leopard system and files on it. Jumped to a clean install of Mountain Lion. Did all this myself, glad its done, whew, successfully. The Ram and the SSD are gems, like the Crucial support people.
PPS Yes, these were expensive improvements. Ouch but ... Worth it.

  • Buying 2GB RAM for Macbook

I'm buying a Macbook soon and want to buy the RAM first so I can put it in asap. I read a lot of good things about OWC on these forums, but have noticed that the price of their 2GB package has gone up from $160 to $225 over the last few weeks. Crucial sounds great but is WAY out of my price range. What are my options? I saw some decently priced RAM on NewEgg (Patriot, G.Skill) The G.Skill actually is looking pretty good from the user reviews...
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/CustRatingReview.asp?Item=N82E16820231066

I bought two gigs of OWC Ram that has been working perfectly. It comes with an "Advanced Replacement Lifetime Warranty" which is nice. I paid for express shipping and got it the next day. It seated easily and has been running at 667MHZ the entire time.
The price has come down $5 to $219:

  • Ram for macbook 4,1 - please confirm if this is correct!

Hi everyone, I think I have found a decent deal- does this RAM look appropriate for my macbook 4,1 (needs PC2-5300, 667, non ecc unbuffered 200 pin sticks... all are a match, but is there anything else I need to take into consideration, aside from the fact that it is used and may not work?!

You should consider that sometimes even though the specs line up Kingston ram might not work well in your Mac. You need to look at Crucial before you purchase used ram from eBay. Crucial is 100% guaranteed to work and they have great customer service if you ever need them. OWC is also good. Personally I would stay away from Kingston and eBay. I also believe that you'll fine Crucial to be less expensive.

  • Problems upgrading RAM for Macbook Pro 13" late 2011

First, thank you all for your assistance.
I don't know if this has happened to anyone yet. I have a 13" late 2011 MacBook Pro that came with a default 4 GB of RAM. I considered upgrading to 8 GB and problems arose: I had stripes 1 inch in lenght distributed across the screen. I've done some research and saw that it was a hardware problem with the Graphics Card/GPU. I switched back to the original 4 GB and so far so good, no problems. I did notice a few key things:
Originally I have 384 MB of Video Ram in the GPU
While using the 8 GB Ram upgrade, it said 512 (called my attention)
It reverted to 384 when switching to the original RAM
In the tech specs section of Apple Support site about my machine, it says that the Video RAM is "shared" with main memory. No other knowledge on that.
Could the RAM upgrade affected the memory supported by the GPU? Why did it increase? Is there any solution to this?
    Thanks to everybody in advance.

It should - I've 16GB of RAM installed in my late 2011 15" and my built-in card now shows 512MB of VRAM. There might have been a problem with the RAM you installed. I would only buy Crucial, Kingston (not the 'value' brand), OWC or Corsair (again, not the 'value' brand).
Some RAM sellers simply have less than stellar performance using Macs. Make sure that you install the correct speed and specs as recommended by Apple.
    Good luck,
    Clinton
