RAM & graphics card advice

Was hoping to get some advice re: RAM & a graphics card upgrade for my macpro.
I have been using Premiere pro CS 5.5 & FCP 7.0.3 on my macpro for a little while with no issues
(along with the other apps in the suites: AE, PS, compressor, DVDSP, etc).
For the CUDA acceleration the Adobe site recommends that I ugrade to one of these cards:
GeForce GTX 285 for Mac
Quadro FX 4800 for Mac
Quadro 4000 for Mac
I also just received a copy of Avid Media Composer 5.5 & have been waiting to install it based on Avid approving stability for OS 10.6.8 + not sure how the matrox card is working for them yet either.
Would anyone recommend one of these above cards specifically for use with all 3 applications?
Was also looking at putting in 24 GB of RAM as well. Assume I can always use more, but how much?
Is there anybody running a similar setup as this on OS 10.6.8?
I know there are a number of editors on here that may use all 3 apps (FCP, PP, & Avid), but I am not sure if they run on the same computer without issues, or what the setup may be.
From what I have read online it looks like there are lots of issues with the 4000, but it is hard to tell if that is reliable info as some of the posters have found out they had bad RAM, or it was some other problem they introduced.
Mostly i see that they recommend the GTX 285 card if I can find one, but I am unsure which way to go. Any suggestions?
MacPro Specs are:
Mac OS 10.6.8
MacPro4,1
Processor - 2 X 2.26 GHz Quad core Intel Xeon (8 cores)
memory - 6 GB 1066 MHz DDR3
graphics card - NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 (512MB VRAM)
also have a matrox mini card installed
under system profiler - memory it says:
Type is DDR3 ECC, speed 1066 MHz
THANKS!

Last I talked to Matrox, the MC5 driver install for the MXO2 mini is different than the install for CS5. I don't know if they changed that with the new Matrox tools but you will want to contact them and see. If not then you will only be able to setup the Matrox for 1 or the other since I doubt you can install both and they work without issue
The Quadro 4000 is best for Adobe versus the other 2. The differences between the cards really tont effect MC5 but they recommend a Quadro because that's what they test with.

Below are the specs for the workstation I just bought. I'm planning on upgrading the graphics card to a GeForce GTX 570 (Fermi) 1280MB. The chassis is pretty small, and I'm concerned that it might get too hot. Does anyone have any advice as to whether this machine can handle this card, and whether or not I should by extra fans, or a water cooling system for the card? Thanks in advance!

Here are the major failings of that "workstation":
    1) The power supply is much too weak to handle an upgrade to a GTX 570. Heck, that PSU might not have been capable of actually handling even its claimed 350W - but more like 200W. As such, it's barely capable of handling even that "workstation"'s base configuration with integrated Intel HD 2000 graphics. You will definitely need a new power supply (at least 550W, but preferably 750W to 850W) right away before you can even upgrade the graphics card at all.
    2) That PC has only one hard disk. Adobe requires a minimum of at least one additional hard disk (preferably two or more additional disks) in order to run Premiere Pro acceptably well.
    3) Change out the H67 motherboard for a Z68 motherboard. H67 cannot overclock the "limited-overclockable" i7-2600 CPU at all. And even with a Z68 motherboard, the fastest that you can run that non-K i7-2600 would be 3.9GHz.
    4) As you stated, that small case will not be enough. You will need a much bigger case to handle the load from Premiere Pro plus all of the hardware upgrades that I'm suggesting.
Also, keep in mind that the company only offers "lifetime" technical support if you don't tinker with the PC's innards at all - not even a minor hardware upgrade or only for a vendor-approved hardware upgrade such as RAM. Once you open that case for a non-vendor-approved hardware upgrade (e.g. an upgraded power supply, an upgraded GPU or upgraded cooling), you will no longer have technical support from that company that you're getting the PC from.
As currently equipped, that system will run about 25 to 30 times slower than a fast PC. Look at payal's 622-second result running 5.0.3 on the PPBM5 results list, with the same CPU, chipset and integrated graphics as your system: It is already more than 12 times slower (in terms of the Relative Performance Index) than a fast system - and that system is already running two disks. With only one disk for absolutely everything - the OS, media, projects, previews, cache and exports - it would be much slower than even that because SATA is only a half-duplex interface, not a full-duplex interface. As a half-duplex interface, SATA can only deliver data transfers in one direction at a time. However, video editing programs like PPro require simultaneous reads and writes. This means that the single disk must wait for data transfers in a given direction to be completed before any data starts transferring in the opposite direction.

  • Need graphics card advice.

I purchased a new laptop from BB about 6 months ago, a Toshiba Satellite P875. I need a graphics card with at least 128mb of dedicated memory and think I only have a chip with 32mb of dedicated memory. I was wondering if anyone knows what would be good, keeping in mind that cost is an issue.
    Thanks.

That link lists all the expansion packs, and if they will, will not, or might work with various graphics cards(the list is fairly extensive).
My guess is that your CPU picked up the slack for your lacking GPU in the base game, but the later expansion packs seem to weed out all but the higher end cards.
Unfortunately, you don't have a gaming computer, so the best you can do is see just how far down you can turn the graphics settings/resolutino.

  • Graphics Card Advice

    Hi Guys,
I'm looking to upgrade from my trusy G5 to a new MacPro.
I'm a retoucher and 3d illustrator and use Photoshop and Cinema 4d as my main apps.
    I've looked at through the forum and I'll apologise if this has already been discussed! I've seen this thread;
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=625222&tstart=75
I'm not too clear on the technical jargon and wondered if someone could suggest the best card for my needs. Cost is not an issue, and to be honest, I do sometimes like the occassional game on my mac!
    Thanks in advance,
    TonyG
    Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5, 2.5 GB Ram.   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Given the cost of the ATi X1900 XT I would recommend this graphics card to most people whether they truly need it or not. It's good performer at a reasonable price and will suit all but the most demanding needs. While the Nvidia 4500 FX is slightly better I feel that the difference is not great enough to justify the substantially higher price.
For you specifically, Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop CS2 performance is not affected by which graphics card you choose. Even if you choose not to upgrade and stay with the Nvidia 7300 GT. This is not to say that this will remain the same with CS3 as it is unknown if Adobe will start to utilize the GPU for additional calculation performance such as Apple has with their CoreVideo and CoreImage libraries.

  • Lenovo G505s A10-5750M 8GB Ram - graphics card?

I was looking at buying this laptop - http://www.johnlewis.com/lenovo-g505s-laptop-amd-a10-8gb-ram-1tb-8gb-ssd-15-6-black/p611680 - and was just wondering what graphics card it has? I emailed JL and asked and they told me the Radeon HD 8570M, but when i've been looking online etc. people have said it came with the 8560G.
Does anyone know for certain which card this comes with?
    Thanks!

  • GeForce GTX 680 Mac Edition Graphics Card advice wanted 2008 Mac Pro. Eight core desktop.

I have read some threads yet it is not clear to me if it is a good move to upgrade an Mac Pro eight core 3.1- 2008 to use GeForce GTX 680 Mac Edition Graphics Card. I ask as my GeForce 8800 GT 2008 card has given up the ghost, and it has done sterling service R.I.P.. The machine is in the repair shop for a service itself, and this problem. So I thought an upgrade, as I am at it. Daunting choice out there. Um, learning curve and all that!
I mainly do 2D graphics, Canvas, Adobe stuff, yet a little amount of video, which may grow some. No games on this work horse!
So here I am fishing for experienced advice were my own is not, from anyone who has done this. Has it held up, do you get a boot screen, does it run two monsters easily via DVI.
If you have one or something good fitted please share the skinny!
For me it is turning into the year of the video card. My laptop looks like it got the disease first!
    Thanks.

    #2: GTX 680 Mac $625

#4: GTX 285, no idea how 'safe' as often read someone (not Macvidcards) flashed PC card and sold as "Mac" and they are old, and may not be supported in Mavericks (and that would apply to a 8800 too).

A new gpu is $5000 cheaper than an overhaul and new MP.
A 2008 though will never perform as well as later models. Ideal is 2010 or later.
Even a top of the line iMac with GTX if you are having a lot of trouble and thinking of ditching the 2008.

  • Lenovo G505s Graphic card advice

I am considering buying the G505s. The one with an AMD  A10-5750M processor and 8Gb RAM. This one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lenovo-G505s-15-6-inch-Laptop-Black/dp/B00LLE6IAU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=141...
I don't really want a gaming laptop but I want one to use as a general laptop but for casual gaming. I don't expect to be running new games on high graphics setting, but it would be nice if I would be able to play some newish games like Battlefield 4, Simcity, the Sims 4 and GTA IV/GTA V. I have looked online and found that this model is normally quite capable of running some of these games. However, I have a concern about the graphics card: Radeon R5 M230. For some of these games, such as Battlefield 4, youtube videos only seem to show it being played on the same model G505s but with a AMD Radeon HD 8750M graphic card. I've even seen it played on some youtube videos on the same model but the AMD A8 version, which has AMD Dual Graphics : AMD Radeon 8550g + 8570m.
I thought that the version I am considering buying had a better processor and grahics card and is more expensive, so am I correct that I won't be able to play Battlefield 4 and some other games?

When I said that, it was more of an expression.
My G770 can probably run new games but it's not enjoyable, Metro Last Light was running at about ~20 FPS on Minimum settings. Call of Duty Ghosts was ~30 FPS, but it used to drop frames on every few minutes. With the "latest" driver from 2013 I probably wouldn't be able to start the game if I hadn't used 3rd party AMD drivers which served me okay. But I also ran all those games at the native resolution, which in my case is 1600x900. Note that I run a Samsung 840 EVO SSD and I have 8GB RAM.
My point is that a mid range laptop is not meant for gaming, while it can run games there is no guarantee that it will be able to do that in say 2 years. And when I say run, I mean you actually playing. Any PC can run a game, but there's a difference between being able to run it and being able to play it.
I don't know if you're getting the laptop because of the price or you need portability. If it's not the latter, I seriously suggest you to look into a desktop PC. For 650 USD you can build a pretty decent rig, with a monitor and all peripherals. In my honest opinion, I should have done that.
All of this is strictly for AAA games, that are graphics intensive. Simulations, MMOs, RPGs, Indie, Valve games, are all very playable on my computer, even Sims 4, I can run that at medium without issues.
I hope I cleared any confusion. If you have any other questions feel free to ask or PM me.

  • Satellite M45-S169 - Overheats and upgrading RAM/graphic card

    Hello,
I need a few answers and reassurance to the questions I have about my laptop. Here are the following questions:
The laptop overheats fairly fast which by this I mean in about 10min or so, the laptop is burning up. Is it the model or is there something wrong with it? I can't keep the laptop on without keeping it plugged into the wall at all times. Does this have anything to do with my battery as in I need a new one?
Am I able to install new RAM* (2GB Max) and if so, does anyone know how much slots there are for this model? (Haven't really opened it up to check because I'm bad at putting things back together after taking them apart)
Am I able to install a new graphics card for the laptop or am I stuck with the ATI RADEON XPRESS 200M Series? (and if it's not too much to ask, is the graphics card I have good, bad, or so-so)
Sorry if there are too much questions but it would be really nice if I get answers to all of them.

    Hi Honu_2,
1.) You should clean your notebook using compressed air spray. This could blow out the dust from the cooling ventilators and read this article please:
    http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/ann.jspa?annID=40
2.) Yes, it seems that you need a new battery if your notebook only works with connected AC/DC adaptor.
3.) You should check your user manual. As far as I know this model supports up to 2GB RAM. That means you can install 1GB in both slots.
4.) Upgrading the graphic card is not possible since its soldered/fixed on the mainboard and your notebook is only designed for preinstalled graphic card.
By the way: All these questions are already answered here. Check the forum for similar threads, you will find a lot of interesting stuff! ;)

  • E31 Graphics Card Advice

    Hello:
I have been shopping around for a few months for a replacement for my Thinkpad T60p.
I was convinced I would by a w520 but then I started considering desktops.
I’m semi-retired and don’t really need a laptop as much as I did when working full time.
Besides, my T60p works just fine for work related stuff and travel. I also have an x200t.
I have found 2 pre-configured E31s at a reseller that are the same except for the graphics card.
Model 2555-47U has a Quadro 600 card and Model 2555-48U has a Quadro 2000 card. Both have the Xeon E3-1230V2 CPU.
    The price difference is $300.
My usage will be for ripping CDs, A to D conversion (LPs to digital), raw photo processing (Canon’s free software; no Adobe), and maybe some video editing—files from a Canon DSLR.
Will the Q2000 benefit me in any way over the Q600 for these tasks?
Don’t mind spending the extra $300 if it gains me something.
I also looked at an M92p tower (Model 2992-A5U) with the i7-3770 CPU and Radeon 7450 graphics card.
It is about the same price as the E31 w/Q600, but has the HD4000 integrated graphics along with the Radeon 7450.
Would this be a better choice?
I have the perception that the E31 is "better" than the M92p because it is a certified workstation.
One bonus of the M92p is the 3-year on-site warranty, but that’s not as important as the CPU/graphics to me.
If it matters, I connect to an NEC LCD2190UXi (1600 x 1200) monitor and plan to purchase an NEC P241W (1900 x 1200). I use SpectraView calibration software.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

Your probalby on the right track to replace it.  I dont' think you can replace the fan.   the one I suggested below should be pretty kick butt.

  • Need graphics card advice pls

getting ready to buy quad and i now have 1.8 dual w/geoforce 6600 ddl running 2 30in displays - i see that i can order a 7800gt but i need 2 and dosent give me the option to get a 2nd - or should i just gohead and get the quadro fx - i am going to be doing alot of video editing and also using alot of motion and live type along with digital photography work using apeture or lightroom later - what is the best way to go about this

The 7800 is a better buy than the Quadro. The NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 graphics card occupies the 16-lane PCI Express slot and adjacent PCI Express slot. The PowerMac G5 only supports a maximum of one NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 or GeForce 7800 GT card per system. If you want a second video card Apple recommends the NVIDIA GeForce 6600.

  • Graphic Card Advice

    Hi,
I was wondering you would share your opinion on what kind of performance boost you think I'd get by installing a Quadro 2000 or 4000. Now I know there are a thousand different variables that constitute render times such as system specs, sequence settings, effects, color, etc ,etc. But I was wondering if I gave you some basic info if you could give me your "best guess" as to what kind of boost I'd get.
To borrow a quote from Dr McCoy from Star Trek 4 The Voyage Home... "Your best guess is better than most people's facts"
    So...
Usually I render a typical HD sequence consisting of 1080p source MTS that gets rendered out to 720p for the web. A typical sequence just has some minor color correction using the fast color corrector and a psd on layer/track 2 with an alpha channel which is used as a watermark. In terms of complexity it's fairly simple.
Now that being said when I run it through AME it takes approx 15 minutes to render 1 minute of video.
My system is about 4 years old and is not at all beefy by today's HD standards...I know this.
But I am looking into getting a Quadro 4000 or 2000 to decrease render times.
In your "best guess"...how much render time do you think I might save on?
Again...I know there are a multitude of variables that are taken into consideration. Just looking for some opinions as I{ have never purchased a high end GFX card before.
    Current Specs
ASUSTeK Computer INC. P5QL PRO (LGA775)
    HP w2408 (1920x1200@59Hz)
    512MB GeForce 9400 GT (MSI)
    8.00 GB Dual-Channel DDR2 @ 332MHz (5-5-5-15)
    Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700  @ 2.66GHz    44 °C
    Kentsfield 65nm Technology
    ATAPI iHAS120   6 ATA Device

I second tstormSierra. Any halfway decent discrete GPU would be seriously bottlenecked by that CPU and memory combination. I had a Q9450, and it was slower than even a dual-core Sandy Bridge i3, let alone an i7, in overall performance in Premiere Pro (all other components besides the CPU, motherboard and RAM were identical in both systems). The Q6700 would be even slower than the Q9450 due to its slower FSB speed and smaller L2 cache.
Though to be fair, your current GPU does not have enough RAM to even enable MPE GPU acceleration at all: MPE GPU acceleration requires a minimum of 765MB of free, unused graphics RAM (this means that 768MB cards will not enable MPE GPU acceleration due to the fact that the Windows GUI itself consumes over 15MB of that graphics RAM). As a result, MPE is "permanently" locked to the software-only mode with such a card.
If you absolutely need a new GPU, and plan on sticking with your current outdated CPU platform (or cannot afford to update to a much newer CPU platform) for the foreseeable future, don't go with a Quadro or any other GPU that costs more than $100: Quadros cost four times more money than their absolute performance justifies (for example, the Quadro 2000 is now obsolesced by the newer K2000; however, even when new, the Quadro 2000 is significantly slower than the GeForce GTS 450 that it was based on). As such, the GeForce GT 640 would be the highest GPU that I would go for in that rig (this while keeping things in balance). Otherwise, save up for a complete new rig.

  • OpenGL,  what to do - ore new graphic card?

    3GB RAM,
    Graphic card: ATI FireGL V3100 128Mb with driver 8.543.0.0 ( 08october 2008)

The PS CS4 do not recognise the graphic card and GPU settings are grayed out in Preferences> performance.
As fare as I can read, information's about the graphic card, indicate that it should meet the openGL standards. http://ati.amd.com/products/workstation/techspecs.html
    Any advice ?

I think you really need OpenGL 2.1 & DirectX 10 support, although PS indicates differently. I do not think your card has full support for 'Shader Model 3' which is required for CS4. Check the subsequent models in your link.

  • MacBook Pro 17" (Late 2011) Graphics Card

    Hello Community,
I've researched this community, and found some relevant posts to the following question. However, the answers I found weren't completely satisfying. So, I'm posting my own on the subject to help me and others.
    I have the following:
    • MacBook Pro 17" (Late 2011, MacBookPro8,3) 2.5 ghz Quad Core i7/512 SSD/8 GB RAM
    • Graphics Card: AMD Radeon HD 6770M with 1 GB VRAM and Intel HD 3000 Graphics
I know desktop models can be upgraded, but I can not afford the one I need at the moment. I am aware that many Apple laptop graphics cards can not be upgraded. Can this particular AMD Radeon graphics card be replaced and upgraded?
If it can be replaced and upgraded, any suggestions on the best graphics card available? AMD has some nice upgrades.
The card is nice, fast, and I'm not unhappy with it, but I run graphics and multimedia applications, and could benefit from the newer cards available.
    I appreciate your input community.
    Thanks,
    Greg

About the only time you can upgrade a video card in a notebook is if that model notebook came with a better video card then what you ordered. At a later date if that better video card become available on the used market you could by one and replace the original as it was made to fit in the same model.
But it is almost impossible to buy one from the original manufacturer. Especial during the current production run of that model.
In your case the model you bought has the best video card available in the new line of MBPs. So there is no better card that would fit in your system. Whether the new models that will be coming out later this year will use a better video card and whether it would physical fit in your model is unknow.
But all of what I wrote above doesn't really matter as with all Macbook Pros the video card and CPU is Soldered to the logic board and can not be replaced. If either fails the complete logic board needs to be replaced.
The only things that can be easily replaced by the user in a Apple Macbook Pro is the RAM, hard drive and DVD drive.
All other parts Apple does not sell to the general public.
So your only option is if the newer models have a better video card is to sell your present system and buy the new model.

  • Satellite P100 - graphic card nVidia Geforce Go 7600 crashed

    Hello!
My graphic board has crashed and, after removing dozens of screws, i've verified it's not integrated in the motherboard. I could disassembled it after removing the last three screws.
    - My laptop is a Toshiba P100-342 (PSPA3E-0QE038SP)
Here, you can see the model number: http://imageshack.com/a/img856/1917/6s6f.jpg
    - The graphics card is a nVidia Geforce Go 7600.
Here you can see it on the motherboard: http://imageshack.com/a/img834/5825/ktl8.jpg
And here, alone on the table: http://imageshack.com/a/img839/3525/6of6.jpg
This is the nVidia chip: http://imageshack.com/a/img836/4343/q7lg.jpg
Searching in the internet, i've found just 1 graphic card similar to mine. But i'm not sure if it'll run, because i've read the devices must be exactly the same as the original:
    http://www.ebay.es/itm/NEW-Toshiba-A000013050-Nvidia-G73M-128MB-GeForce-Go-7600-Video-Graphics-Board-/360821279000?pt=PCC_Video_TV_Cards&hash=item54029f c918&_uhb=1
I asked the eBay seller about the compatibility and his answer was: "Please contact Toshiba for complete product compatibility." But Toshiba doesn't provide any support after the warranty expires (almost in Spain).
Anyone has replaced this graphic card? Do you think i should buy this ebay's graphic card? Are there any other solutions? (for example: replacing the whole motherboard...)
    Thank's very much in advance.

I never had to replace an graphic card in a notebook but I would not purchase any part if Im not 100% sure if it would be fully compatible with my notebook.
Fact is that SATELLITE P100-342 was equipped with an NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600 (code name G73M) PCI Express x16 (GDDR2 256GB dedicated RAM) graphic card.
The part on ebay supports only 128MB and therefore I think both parts are not the same.
This could be the reason not to purchase this part.
