RAM Hogs

I am on a quest to slim my computer's software down to reduce CPU and RAM usage. I noticed that Directory Service is using the most RAM at some times until I kill the process in Activity Monitor, which didn't seem to affect my computer other than freeing up RAM. What in Directory Service is using so much RAM, and is it necessary?
Of course, with 3 GB RAM (I have 4 installed but it can only use 3), I still have plenty of RAM to go around, but more is always better in case I need it.

But isn't the VRAM stored on my external hard drives, too?
Not necessarily. The operating system will move modified application data from RAM to /var/vm/swapfile(s) if your usage needs more RAM for one app, while you still have another app(s) still running.
For example, my MacBook currently have 23GB of Virtual Address Space in use, but I only have 2GB of real RAM and 6GB in swapfiles. 2+6 is only 8GB, so as you can see all the virtual memory does NOT get stored on disk.
As I stated in my previous reply, a lot of virtual address space is either shared memory where on chunk of RAM exists in several programs virtual address space. And a lot of virtual address space has nothing mapped into it. That virtual address space is for potential future memory needs by the program.
Again, ignore virtual address space. Worry about real memory usage, and whether you are swapping using the 'sar' command I already gave you.
I've noticed that elminating iStat Menus (which also uses substancial RAM and CPU) did not free up space on my internal HD.
Disk storage and RAM usage are not really related.
I've noticed that sometimes, when I open things that use VM, my external disks start spinning.
No. They use real memory.
If you have lots of programs running, and if some of those programs are real memory intensive, then the current active program(s) will cause the OS to push data from other programs out to the /var/vm/swapfile(s).
Since you have already maxed out your RAM, your choices are reduce the number of active programs, use less memory hungry programs, or get a new Mac which can hold more RAM.
But I must stress, you are wasting your time worrying about how much virtual address space a process has, and rather worry about how much real RAM it is using.

  • FCPX undo / auto save bugs + RAM Hog - Possible Fix?

    Hi there FCPX users,
I have a 8-core 2010 Mac Pro with 16GB Ram and the stock GPU running Lion 10.7.2
I have been using FCPX since day dot, and have been overall very pleased with its super fast work flow and realtime capabilities.
I have completed over 100 3-4min edits with average project size of 50GB, and a bunch of wedding edits with approx 150-200GB project sizes. The issues I had with 10.0.0 - 10.0.1  were mainly FCPX quitting unexpectedly.
And now on 10.0.2 I have expereinced the well known auto save / greyed out undo bug. I have gone through all the steps via apple care which included:
Trashing the Prefs, repair permissions, check drive space / correct format, new user account and clean install of lion / Final Cut X.
I am still experiencing this issue. So yesterday I purchased another 16GB Ram totaling now to 32GB Ram, and I monitor the RAM usage via "Free Memory".
I Noticed that if my RAM is running low, I "free Memory" without quitting FCPX and continue to work as normal, and so far I have not yet experienced the issue again.
Dont know if this is a temporary fix, but it has worked for an hour long edit (approx 6-7 hrs without restaeting FCPX).
Also, I have noticed FCPX will eat up 16-20GB RAM quite easliy.
Not sure if this problem is related to RAM...
    My 2 cents.

You have to really be conscious when you start a new project and how and where you manage your footage.
No one has complained more than I have about FCPX's quirky behaviors and it can be frustrating. I have worked with FCPX since day one, even tried to get a refund but couldn't. After using it for a while now, it is very easy to get used to how fast some elements are in editing and reviewing a lot a footage. But several things you have to make sure of that will keep the rendering speed up and less crashing happening.
First make sure that you can see how much space you have on your drives by right clicking in the main window of you screen and make the necessary clicks form the drop down menu. Make sure any drives you have been doing projects with lately are hooked up and do a secure empty trash. Its cool to see how much space you regain. 2) make sure that FCPX, Motion and Compressor (if you have those are installed on your boot drive).
    3) Create a FCPX Projects folder on an external (FW800) with at least 75% of its drive space available if you do not have secondary drive installed in your computer. (Its very important to note that any drive you use for any aspect of editing should never be more 75% full, especially your boot drive.) This is where FCPX will log all of its operating files for all of your projects.
    4) Either copy  all of the other FCPX files from your main hard drive and paste then into the new folder you created. Then delete all of those files, as well as any Motion files too! (Do the same as you did for FCPX in the previous step)
    5) If you need to move all of your music files to another drive as well. If its iTunes, you will have to tell iTunes where to look for the new files and it will populate accordingly. This will free up a tremendous amount of space. Make sure to delete them form the main drive.
    6) Remove any junk programs form the boot drive (main) or move them to another drive if possible.
    7) Now do another secure empty trash and watch your drive space return.
    8) Now open up FCPX and make sure you only create projects on your new drive by clicking on that drive in the project window. Any older projects you can simply pull them to the other drive and you will be prompted on how to duplicate that project and all its files to that drive. Delete the other ones.
    9) Only capture footage to you external drives. Save it there until you need it.
    10) Create all new projects on the secondary drive and pull any footage you are working with on that drive as well. By keeping it all off the Boot drive FCPX will run much smoother and faster, especially if you have at least 16g of Ram, which I recommend.
    So to re-cap:
    1. Keep your boot drive lean. Delete anything you can move to another drive. Do not set up events and or projects to it...never!!!
2 Use you secondary drive for your project files and the video you are working with in your events.
    3. Store raw footage on a FW800 drive ready to move to your secondary drive.
    4. Use secure empty trash after all editing sessions when you are certain of your trash contents.
Doing these things have greatly increased much more consistently faster render times and much fewer crashes.

  • Safari 5.1 RAM hog

Did anyone experience high RAM usage with Safari 5.1 on OS X Lion?
Also, with the Resume feature, boot up takes so long.

WOW!  What an absolute pig.  Once you start safari you can do nothing with it and watch it eat up RAM slowly in the activity monitor.
    I see 2 processes.
    Safari
    Safari Web Content
Only way around it is to restart it at least once a day, or more and let it start again.
Lion itself must use a lot more RAM than snow leopard.  I have 8GB of ram and since installing Lion I  have been shopping around for more RAM to get things moving again.  Before Lion i was able to have:
    Photoshop,
    Illustrator,
    Safari (2 windows, 10 tabs),
    Reeder,
    itunes,
    skype,
    ical
    VMFusion
Plus a few other programs running and never experience any issues, but now I cant.
In the time it has taken to type this Safari has scooped up another 150 mb of RAM, and i have done nothing else?!!
Just before i searched this forum for this issue, i shut Safari down as it was using over 2 GB!!

  • Is Lion a RAM hog?

Just upgraded to Lion 10.7.2 on my MBP 2.66GHz i7 with 8GB DDR3 RAM.
My Photoshop files are dragging - not good. Is this my Lion-future, or is there something I can do?
Granted I've only got about 80GB free space on my hard drive - but have worked with less "headroom" before my upgrade with little to no problems.

What size images are you working with and what Photoshop version?
Also, is it lagging in general or with certain functions?  Also, check activity
monitor and see if there is anything running in the background that
may be causing an issue either with memory or CPU usage.
I currently use CS4 (didn't find CS5 as adding anything useful for me)
on a new 2011 Mac Mini Server (quad core i7) and my 2011 13" MBP
(dual core i7).  And, it is now a backup machine, a 2009 Core2Duo
iMac.  All were running Lion and none of them has seen any issue
with lagging response.  The only issue I do have is an occasional
crash when I quit Photoshop.  Then again, I haven't worked with
images much larger than 100 or so meg in size.
As far as the inactive region, that is memory that previously openned
programs have used and are still there.  It allows for quick reopenning
of those programs.  However, if the system needs that memory, it will
purge it as necessary and reallocate it.

  • 10.9.2 Kernel_task out of control RAM hog

Since upgrading to 10.9.2 the other day, I've now had two times the message that I'm out of RAM, when I check Activity Monitor, I find Kernal_task has hit 9-10 gigs RAM.
It's tied to Firefox, which averages 2 gigs RAM (I have lots of tabs/windows).  When I force quit Firefox, Kernal Task dropped to 1.5 gigs.
This didn't happen ever before the upgrade to 9.1.2, and that's the only change in software or behavior since then.
    Anyone else seeing this problem?

As I've learned..this is maybe less kernal task "taking" so much ram...though that seems bad...but it takes it and then the "Memory Presure"  hits the yellow and then red, forcing me to crash programs if not force shut down the computer.

  • Secure Empty Trash is RAM-hog, or something...

All I want to do is secure empty trash some files larger than 700 MBs and when I do this, everything lags. I open activity monitor (slowly) and cpu is at 100 %. I try to stop the secure empty trash. nothing. So I relaunch Finder, secure empty trash again, again cpu at 100 %. Anyone had this problem?

secure empty trash works by overwriting the existing data 7 times in addition to unlinking it. this does seem to occupy the CPU quite heavily on my computer. also doing it with a 700MB file will take A LONG time. I would stay away from it unless there is an extremely compelling reason to use it.

  • I just had more ram installed in my 2009 mac mini and now there is no audio at all.

    Hi all,
I have a late 2009 Mac Mini which I update to mavericks. This was not a great idea. The performance has been aweful since upgrading. I finally looked into adding RAM. I was told by the Genius at my local store to buy RAM on line and bring it back to the store for install. I had the Ram installed today and I am satisfied that things function much faster now.
The problem now is that the computer does not make any noise. I have speakers plugged into the headphone jack but no noise comes out. When the system boots up, there are no beeps or tones audible. The speakers were all working earlier today when I unplugged everything to take the mini to the store. I also plugged the speakers jack into my phone and they work. I was able to connect a bluetooth speaker and play music through it.
I have tried to reset the PRAM but I"m not sure if I was successful. The instructions I have read for PRAM reset say hold keys until second chime is heard. I heard no chimes at all.
I am a novice when it comes to computers but I am good at following detailed instructions.
Any help would be graetly appreciated!

Yes, this was an Apple retail location.
I made an appiontment thinking that they would sell and install the RAM. When I got there, the genius looked up the specs for my mini and said they did not sell what I needed. He explained that the mini was older and out-dated. He looked up the specs on what RAM i needed and suggested that I purchase it elsewhere and bring it back for them to install. He suggested that I purchase a new computer but I couldn't justify spending $600 or more. I am a very light user and would only be wasting money on a newer set up.
It was when I returned that I was informed (by a different tech) that Apple would not be responsible for any damage that might occur during the replacement.
I decided to proceed anyway thinking that an apple tech was less likely to do damage than I was.
After taking it in the back and swapping the chips, he brought it out, plugged it in and proceeded to open a bunch of Ram hogging apps, graphing software, and internet sites. I was happy to see that the performance was greatly improved and the spinning ball was not dominating the system.
After I hooked it back up at home and tried to play some music, I realized that there was no sound.

  • After Effects wont render full res - possible RAM issue?

Not sure if this has ever come up before - I'm unable to render out of after effects and RAM preview half res. When I try and RAM preview the comp just goes black and when I send it to render I get the following message:
After Effects warning: Logged one error - "error Rendering while writing to file. An output module failed. The file may be damaged or corrupted(-1610153464)"
I'm able to RAM preview half res okay, and can render out half res as well. I've tried it with rendering multiple frames simultaneously on and off, clearing the disk cache and turning off any RAM hogging effects.
An obvious cause I've identified is that I've recently upgraded and replaced the RAM on my machine, however, after effects has been the only software effected. Cinema 4D renders no problems and I've had no other problems with the general running of my machine.
Have there ever been any cases before of After Effects not working with certain types of RAM?
    My set up -
    Mac Pro - Early 2008
    OSX Mavericks 20.9.2
    2 x 2.8 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    16GB 800MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
    250GB Samsung SSD

I'm running After Effects CC 12.2.1.5
Sorry should have mentioned, no matter what format I render as, whether it be QT or TIFF sequence, I still get the exact same error.
QT version i'm using is 7.6.6
In terms of reproducing the error, it seems to happen to pretty much anything I try and render, unless it's an extremely simple one layer comp. Rendering a comp with 2 image sequence layers (1920 x 1080) will cause this to happen, but if there's just the one image sequence alone in the comp (and no other layers) then it will render.

  • Adding more RAM to Tiger

My ibook has 512MB's of RAM. I am happy with this. However since next year I plan to return to school to get a Masters in Ministry, I may need more RAM. From 2001-2005 while I working on my undergrad I used a Performa 6360 which had 136MB's of RAM + RAM Doubler. I was able to run some 20 apps at one time (or more) without a major slowdown. I cannot do this with Tiger, and since I plan to get the OSX version of Dave to access other PC's on the network (since whatever is built int OSX pales in comparison to Dave). On my Performa 6360 Dave was a necessity, since the campus dumped using Macs in 2002. I remember my 1st year (2001-2002) I could access a number of Macs on the Appletalk network at the time. But after the Fall 2002 semester the mac got dumped. Some students still used Macs, but fewer and fewer used them in the 2003-2005 years.
So my question is. Will maxing out my ibook to a gig of RAM although me to run some 20-30m apps at one time (like I could on the Performa) or was OSX Tiger just not designed for this?
OSX Tiger is much better than OS 9.1, but not in all areas as OS 9.x and before do have their advantages over Tiger.
    Thanks,
    John

Actually, OS 9 does not have any advantage over OS X. You had 136 MB of ram plus RamDoubler, why do you think 512 MB of ram will be less adequate?
RamDoubler merely did what OS X does as part of how it works. It did not give you more ram it just allocated more to the app up front while dropping background apps as low as possible. This is what OS X does.
If you were running 20 - 30 apps with 136 MB of ram then they weren't ram hogs at all and it's very likely you can run them without adding more ram now.
OS X handles virtual memory much better too. In the old days I could run 2-3 apps at a time, now I can run 10-12, and most of mine are major ram hogs like Photoshop.

  • More RAM....BIG improvement

I know I had this question in my mind and saw some discussion about it but I thought I'd answer the question scientifically for all new users who may have the same question.
When running itunes on a dual core Pentium 2.0ghz with 1gb or RAM, it was noticeably slow and switching between applications when itunes was "thinking" was a slow process with multiple seconds between flips.
I recently upgraded to 4GB of RAM on my machine and the difference is like night and day. Clearly (for those that had the question) 1GB of RAM when running itunes and windows XP (let alone the RAM hog that is VISTA) is not enough if you are easily annoyed by slow processing). Not sure what an upgrade to 2GB will do but with RAM being so cheap now (under $50 for 2-2GB sticks) it's well worth it...

  • RAM Used up quickly, Macbook Pro Becomes Slow

Over the past week or so I've noticed my Macbook Pro getting increasingly slower as the day goes by. Looking in activity monitor, my free RAM is often under a couple hundred MBs - and too often below 50MB. Figuring that I just had to clear up some inactive RAM left over from other programs, I purged the inactive RAM, but only to have it get used up again within minutes.
This hasn't ever been a problem to me in the past year that I've had my Macbook Pro, but now it becomes unresponsive very quickly. As an experiment, I booted up my laptop, and even then I had less than a GB of free RAM (never had that little upon bootup before). The only programs I have setup to start on boot are iTunes Helper, Caffiene, and Mail (Hidden). This hasn't changed in at least six months, so I know it's not one of these causing the RAM hogging.
Here is a log of my current Activity Monitor stats- after rebooting about an hour ago, the only programs I've opened were Chrome, iTunes, and Firefox. Everything was fine for a few minutes, then I noticed severe slow down and massive RAM loss, in addition to the cooling fans exceeding 6000rpm for a short while. Does anything here look abnormal?
*I should also note that I've verified the startup disk and repaired permissions, and the Page in/Page Out ratio is fine.

Thomas - yes, the page outs are less than 10% of the page ins, your site was actually what made me take a look at that haha. The reason that I'm concerned about my free RAM is that it has never been this low, and I like having a certain amount of RAM free when I run certain programs (ex. Ableton Live, a music production program, where ~500MB of RAM is needed to load some drum samples).
I had just installed Sophos Anti-Virus a few hours before my post, so that's probably running at startup along with a few others, which I will have to take a look at. Are there any other startup processes that you noticed that I should look into?
Lastly, I installed Final Cut Pro 7 about a week and a half ago. I only open it maybe three days out of the week, so I didn't think that's what would be causing it. However, there may be some background processes that are running even when the actual program isn't running. Can you spot anything like that?
updating the Mac OS X version was the fix for it.
I eventually will udgrade to Mountain Lion, but I would like to get this fixed first. I'm also looking at buying more RAM, but up until recently, 4GB was working fine. I couldn't have everything running, but the programs that I did have open ran fine.
Simple stop leaving program open that you are done using. Make sure you close the Program and not just close the window that the program is using. By default most Mac programs do not close when you close the window they are using. You have to manual close, Quit, those programs.
That's the thing though- I always close programs that I am not using (cmd+q, not just closing the window). I come from a Windows background, so closing a program entirely became a quick habit of mine!

  • OS 9 using too much ram?

Just took a look at "about this computer" on my G4 (which has been running OS 9.1 and behaving beautifully for nearly 10 years) and noticed that the OS is using 530 MB of ram!! Anyone ever experienced such an outrageous ram hog? Any idea what could be causing it and how to bring that number down?
I've started up from my Tech Tool Pro CD and am considering defragging, but am worried that it will freeze and fail to resuscitate the drive.
    Thanks much.

If your computer has more than 1.5GB RAM installed, the excess amount will be listed as used by the OS due to addressing limitations. This is in addition to the OS's normal usage.
If not, restart and check the figure again. Resources which are loaded as needed and shared between applications count as part of the Mac OS usage.
    Defragging won't help.

  • ITunes using too much RAM.

I noticed that when I have about 5 apps open—not including iTunes—my total free (including inactive) memory is 2.0GB. When I open iTunes, it instantly uses about 100 MB but when you leave it open I notice that my RAM is at 1.2GB, even though I have nothing else opened than previously. When I quit it, I get all the RAM back. A huge memory leak, perhaps? Having 800MB of RAM taken away by a single app is completely unacceptable. Is anyone else having this problem?

Well recalling an old post, is just stating the fact that the program is still doing the same thing. And i do concurr that itunes is one of my bigger ram hogs but i have no problem with 16gigs of ram installed. As coder myself, i know it is possible for them to rework itunes to dump cache periodically so that it doesnt hog as much ram as it does.
Itunes is falling behind times as Solid State Drives are becoming more prevelant in computers, they shouldn't need to cache as much as it does currently and hogging system resources. But then again on the other hand, they are  probably thinking that it is not a problem anymore since the standard for most computers/laptop is upwards of 4gigs+. Still is poor coding on apple's behalf that wont be recognized this late in the game.
    In reply to Zak,
As of right now apple is on downward slope according to stock market quotes. But they have a few products that are coming out here soon that will bounce them back easily. After that, I am not sure.
    In reply to Richb1910,
Comparing Apple to Mircosoft now a days is like comparing apple to oranges. Their companies have taken different paths, yes one may be better then the other in their choice of paths. But as it stands microsoft is still the leading home user operating system and server operating system for many major companies. Apple excels with their product lines which make them a very successful company. To say on or the other is barely staying above water is by far the wildest thing i have ever heard.

  • Ff is using over 2gig of ram on startup how do i fix this

OS is widows 7 64 bit with only 2gigs of ram
Firefox has work flawlessly for months but all of a sudden it overloads my ram when I start it, after a minute the ram gets flushed and everything works fine again. Last night I reset Firefox and everything was back to normal, but today its doing the ram hog thing again so resetting it is only a temporary fix.
FYI I don't have any add ons or plugins installed and the only software I've installed in the past month is VLC
Could this be a malware problem or something to do with VLC?

Try to rename (or delete) the sessionstore.js file and possible sessionstore-##.js files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox profile folder.

Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost and you will have to recreate them (make a note or bookmark them if possible).

  • Games/RAM on MacBook Pro 15"

I have recently purchased a MBP 15" with the base graphics and specs. When I go to play a game, sometimes it really lags, almost to the point of unplayability. The game I'm playing when this happens is Minecraft. I don't know if Minecraft is a RAM hog or if something else is the problem. Another thing is that after I quit the game and my MBP is cooling down it seems to run extremely slow. I don't know why this is happening; if someone could enlighten me, that would be great. One last question, even though I just bought my Mac, I think I already need more RAM. The computer will slow down for no reason, and when I took a look at my page outs it was up over a gig, and for swap I have 3.99 GB. Is there something wrong with my comptuer or do I just need more RAM? Any help is appreciated.

Bimmer and I both have 16GB of RAM in our MBPs and I can tell you that my page outs and swap are always at 0 bytes. I just restarted and am only actually 'using' 7.56GB of my built-in 16GB but that number can grow to almost 14GB used (with still 0 bytes of page outs and swap) when I'm really cranking up the machine.
Like Bimmer, I suggest that you install as much RAM as your computer will hold. Games are particularly RAM hungry and I really think that you would see a dramatic difference in performance if you upgrade.
When did you buy your MBP? Which model do you have?
