RAM in iMac G5 Revision

I am wondering the following about the new iMac that was announced on the 12th.
The previous iMac manual had the following RAM requirements (in the 'do it yourself' manuals):
About iMac G5 Memory
1. iMac G5 computers work with memory modules (DIMMs) that meet all of these
criteria: PC3200, 2.5V, unbuffered, 8-byte, nonparity, 184-pin, 400Mhz DDR SDRAM.
2. There are two RAM slots. The maximum amount of RAM you can install is 2 GB. You
can use RAM module sizes of 256 MB, 512 MB and 1 GB, in either slot.
3. DIMMs with any of the following features are not supported in the iMac G5 computer:
registers or buffers, PLLs, ECC, parity, or EDO RAM.
I am wondering what the new specifications are. The manuals appear to have been changed to show "Ambient Light Sensor" which I presume means they apply for the new models too. However, the specifications have changed for RAM on the Apple H/W site.
If I purchase RAM with the following specifications (generalised) will it work:
DDR2 SDRAM PC2-4200 at 533mhz non-ecc
That's the closest I could find myself. But I was concerned that there were no manuals and if it were not standard RAM.
Thanks for your assistance,
James

i 1. iMac G5 computers work with memory modules (DIMMs) that meet all of these criteria: PC3200, 2.5V, unbuffered, 8-byte, nonparity, 184-pin, 400Mhz DDR SDRAM.
Technically that's PC3200 (AKA DDR400) and 200 MHz. The clock fed into a PC3200 module should never be higher than 200 MHz, although hobbyist "overclockers" sometimes try higer frequencies to see if it works. "Marketing speak" refers to a "data rate" of 400 MHz because the data is transferred on both clock edges.
i 3. DIMMs with any of the following features are not supported in the iMac G5 computer:
registers or buffers, PLLs, ECC, parity, or EDO RAM.
Registered output and/or buffers are useful in some cases, but aren't common in personal computing. PLLs would take an incoming clock and produce a more accurate version, or perhaps a faster clock. ECC (error code correction) is generally saved for "mission critical" systems; Data errors are rare in most RAM that's properly rated. EDO (extended data output) DRAM is an outdated asynchronous interface standard. I'm surprised they didn't mention FPM (fast page mode) DRAM.
i DDR2 SDRAM PC2-4200 at 533mhz non-ecc
It's not backwards compatible with PC3200 applications, if that's your question. DDR2 has a slightly different protocol that isn't compatible with a DDR memory controller and the standard module is a 240-pin DIMM. PC3200 comes in 184-pin DIMMs. It's almost tempting because the prices of equivalent sized DDR2 memory are often cheaper.

  • I want to increase the RAM of iMac?

    Hi,
I want to increase the RAM of iMac 27"(Late 2013) to 32GB, is it possible to do the same?
If yes, then please let me know the steps to do it.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Ankush Madan

Yes,  you can upgrade it to 32GB, most on this forum recommend two vendors OWC (www.macsales.com) or Crucial. If you are in the USA use  OWC, if you are anywhere else then Crucial. BTW here is s link to show how easy it is to install:

    Good luck.

  • How to upgrade RAM in iMac 2013 models

how to upgrade RAM in iMac 2013 models. I know one can ask for RMm upgrade while buying iMAC from online store. Is it advisable to upgrade the RAM by self or from some professional?

Even if you do get the 27",  RAM installation is a PTA to install.  Prior to setting up your computer on your desk, you must lay it it face down on a soft area (couch).  Then you have to maneuver your hand & fingers either around or under the pedal to pop open the RAM door.  When putting the RAM into the slots you need to use all of your God given muscles to get them in there.  Otherwise, while you are seating one RAM, the one next to it will pop right on out.
When you hear the "snap," the RAM is seated properly and it's neighbor(s) will not pop out.

  • Installing RAM to imac G4 flat panel

How difficult/dangerous to the computer's wellbeing is it to replace the factory-installed RAM oneself? Apple recommends bringing it to an authorized service (I assume because this model is tricky to open), but the Apple store will only do the install it if I purchase RAM from them - which is 50% more than at Crucial. In any case, I couldn't find a DIY install manual for my model on this site. Any insight and advice would be greatly appreciated...

Here's a DIY guide for you.

Of course, this will void any warranty you have left (if any) on your iMac.
I've done this for one of my iMacs and it wasn't too bad.

  • Adding more RAM to iMac 24"

    Hey Everyone,
I'm considering buying a 24" iMac. I've been told that a way to save some money, is to get the RAM from elsewhere and install it myself.
I'm just checking whether this is actually possible and how hard it is to actually do it. Please help so I can get it soon!!!
If anyone has photos of this, that would be a great help.
    Thanks!

Actually the instruction you got are for the previous year's iMac however the current instructions are similar. Below is a link to the current iMac's manual, look at pages 30 -38.
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/iMacIntel-based_MidUserGuide.pdf
The whole job is a 5 minute process, incredibly simple to do. The only  issue I have seen is some people don't push their new memory in with enough force for it to make good contact, follow the instructions and you are good to go.
As far as where to buy it from because you are in the UK and I am in the US I can't really recommend. The brands I see most recommended though are Crucial and Kensington, I upgraded mine using Kensington and have been 100% pleased.
Have fun with your new toy!

  • Adding more RAM to iMac for After Effects

I've got a 27" 3.1 ghz Intel Core i5 iMac with 8gb of RAM. If I increase it to 16gb of RAM will this help speed up rendering and previews. Will this also help when working with effects and HD video?
Any help on this would be great as reading about this subject is confusing...

Memory has nothing to do with rendering speed, it merely allows to apply more effects and using more layers before getting into pinches.

  • Adding more ram to iMac

    Hi
ive got 2gb of ram i want to upgrade it, i have imac 2007 and on apple website it says i can upgrade up to 4gb of ram but in MacFixIt store i found that you can buy 6gb ram ( 1x 2GB and 1x 4GB by OWC ) for $197.99 is it possible to add up to 6gb of ram ?
because the details are correct i mean those ones:
    DDR2 667MHz SO-DIMM 200 Pin RAM
    Thanks for your help

Although Apple say 4GB is maximum, 6 GB is generally advised in these columns. I, myself, have had 6GB installed for some time and it works fine.
Many people on these forums speak well of the following memory suppliers.
In North America contact OWC …        Upgrade Apple iMac Memory
In Europe contact Crucial.com  …       RAM Memory Upgrade
Both companies have facilities to guide you and will recommend the correct memory package to meet the needs you describe to them.
There may be benefits buying from whichever company has a branch in your own geographical location insofar as Shipping charges, Local sales taxes and Exchange rates.   Check out the basic memory costs and do your sums.

  • Can I Use DDR3 RAM for iMac 7,1 Memory Upgrade?

I'm sorry if this is a silly quesyion but I cannot find an answer anywhere so I thought I would ask here.  My iMac (mid 2007) has the following specs:
    Model Name:          iMac
    Model Identifier:          iMac7,1
Processor Name:          Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed:          2.4 GHz
    Number Of Processors:          1
    Total Number Of Cores:          2
    L2 Cache:          4 MB
    Memory:          1 GB
    Bus Speed:          800 MHz
    Boot ROM Version:          IM71.007A.B03
    SMC Version (system):          1.20f4
Yesterday, from the Apple Store, I ordered an Apple Memory Module 4GB 1333MHz DDR3 (PC3-10600) - 2x2GB.  In the Apple Store it said that this was compatible with all computers shown so I assumed it would be okay with my mid 2007.
From further reading it seems that I will not be able to use this memory and that I should have purchsed 4GB 667MHz DDR2 instead.  Is this correct?  Will I be able to use the DDR3 that I have purchased or will I need to get the DDR2?
I tried to cancel the order but it was too late.  I should have researched it properly first.
    Cheers for any advice.
    TJ

You will not be able to use the ram you ordered.  You need to return it and purchase ram that is
200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM.  Also, don't purchase ram from the Apple store, they overcharge for it.  Look to order ram from a vendor such as Crucial or OWC.

  • Cheaper RAM for iMac G5

I was searching and searching for cheap RAM for my iMac. It seems most places sale RAM for Macintosh computers but charge up the butt for it. Mac comps, or atleast the iMac G5, use what should be cheaper CAS3 memory. While searching I found most places were selling 1GB sticks of "Mac" RAM for $130 or more. I found the memory configurator on Patriot Memory's website and found this model stick of 1GB RAM to be compatible with the iMac G5 2Ghz, PSD1G400. I got two pieces shipped for $212 (not from Patriot but a reseller). I found most other websites' memory configurator will have a 1GB stick of "Mac" RAM and then another stick of 1GB CAS3 RAM for alot cheaper but wouldn't confirm the 1GB CAS3 RAM as compatible for Mac. These websites also would not list the specs of the "Mac" RAM. Who knows. The "Mac" RAM might be the same as the other RAM but they just want to sell it for more. I haven't recieved my 2 sticks of RAM yet but I'll keep everyone posted on how it turns out.

Mac-specific RAM was available in recent months for the same price that you have quoted. Apparently RAM prices, both generic and Mac-specific, have risen since then. Prices will fall at some point in the future. I have tried generic RAM in my iMac G5 and had no problem with it. I got a nice sized rebate when I bought it. Some others have claimed to have had problems with generic RAM, however.

  • Use Macbook Pro RAM in iMac?

Hi, so I just upgraded my macbook Pro 15 inch (pre-unibody) to 4GB of RAM and thus have two 1GB sticks laying around. We have an iMac that serves as the family computer, and so I was wondering if I could use the PC-5300 RAM in the iMac. the iMac is a early 2008 aluminum 2.4GHz mac and uses RAM with 800MHZ bus speed.
Will the 667MHZ RAM from my Macbook Pro work? (better to have 2GB than 1GB right?)

We've been waiting for a Guinea Pig, oop's I mean a Test Subject to come along.
While some of the time it works the other way around 800MHz in place of 667MHz ram, the problem here is that even if it does it would slow the memory bus down to the slower 667MHz speed.
Truly you are better off sticking to the correct speed for your system!

  • What would be my max for RAM? iMac 24 inch Intel

    Hi,
Thinking about upgrading my RAM, but for some reason think I maxed it out when I bought it (2007/8) with 4GB. Am I right in think that this can only be at 4GB or can I add more to it? it says it is an iMac7,1 intel core 2 duo. Also, is there a place on the Apple site or even my own computer that could tell me what the max is?
    Thanks for any help.
    -Brian

    Hi Brian
    The Apple Spec's say 4GB
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP16
However OWC has tested the iMac 7,1 up to 6GB

  • Add Ram toan Imac G5

    Hi,
I'm trying to add 2GB memory to my iMac. Found new one on eBay,
2GB DDR2 SDRAM PC2-4200 (533MHz) ECC, placed it in the only slot available,
which had a 512 MB in it. The iMac did not recognize the 2 GB RAM.
What could possibly be wrong? Beside the RAM being bad.
    Ed

    Hi Ed,
When I checked other vendors' site, the PC2-4200 is showing for your G5. Crucial knows faster RAM will clock back so that may be a way for them to limit inventory.
These are the two vendors from whom I've bought all our Mac RAM for over a decade:
    Data Memory Systems (New Hampshire):

  • Corsair Ram for iMac late 2013

    Hi,
    I got a new iMac 27" late 2013, and bought 32GB Ram somewhere else. It's 4x8GB Corsair Mac Memory DDR3 1600MHz PC3 12800 (CMSA16GX3M2A1600C11).
I got several Kernel Panics, but only with the Corsair Ram. Everything seems to work fine if I use the original 8GB hynix.
Memtest shows no problems with the Corsair Rams at all...
My questions: Am I right to suggest that the Corsair Ram is causing the Problem, altough memtest shows no problems? If yes, should I return the faulty RAMs and get the same as replacement or would you suggest different RAMs? If yes, which ones?

I'd like to Order via Amazon (it's the easiest way for me) but I'm not sure which one.
Would someone help me to decide?
This one seems to be officially compatible with the iMac late 2013: http://www.amazon.de/Crucial-memory-PC3-12800-1600MHz-Macbook/dp/B008LXX9OC
But this one is cheaper, and the technical Data seems to be the same, but I read already bad ratings about them: http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B008PSEHAS/

  • Problems with RAM upgrade iMac G5 1.8GHz

    Stuck - Need Help!
I've previously upgraded up iMac to 2 500Mb RAMs and felt recently that it needed that little bit extra, so I ordered two 1Gb chips from crucial.
Followed instructions to T, but with the two new chips in, the machine won't load.
Interestingly, it boots up with the following RAM combinations
    old 500MB + new 1GB (in any combination) - recognised as 1.5GB
one new 1GB RAM (again either one) - recognised as 1GB
I spoke to crucial who said that as the RAMs work individually, there isn't a problem with them, it could be a Firmware issue. I've upgraded all my software, and don't know what to do next?
Anyone overcome a similar problem in the past?
    Thanks

I'm experiencing something very similar to shaow. I'll share my experience in gory details - sorry for the long post but I've spent more hours trying to stabilize. I should have worked the hours at walmart and bought a new iMac with the money I could have earned
    Anyway, here goes:
Two iMac G5 1.8Ghz 17" (both Fall 2005 model), will call one A and the other B.
Prior to attempting ram upgrade: A, config working fine: both a config using 1GB slot 1, 256MB slot 2 and a single 1 PC3200 1GB stick. OS X 10.4-10.5.7. No problems. I did have the motherboard replaced under warranty after having sleep problems - capacitors were expanded. No problems since that motherboard swap.
Prior to attempting ram upgrade: B, config working fine: 2 x 256MB sticks. OS X 10.3.9
Ordered 3 PC3200 400Mhz 1GB sticks from Data Memory Systems.
    Upgraded A: Added 1GB stick = 2GB total
Upgraded B: Removed both 256MB sticks from B and added two 1GB sticks = 2GB total
Booted B, experienced gray screen of death with the multi-language crash message - somethign like: 'Please hold down the power button and restart'. Power cycled B, booted off a retail box DVD of OS X 10.5.6. Began upgrade to 10.5.6. Gray screen of death part way thru upgrade. Power cycled, gray screen of death again during early boot phase.
Decided to run tests on B. I could not locate the Apple Hardware Test (neither on system dvd 1 nor on a separate DVD). I resorted to using TechnoTools Deluxe which was included with AppleCare box. No hardware problems found including on the 2GB memory.
Removed both new 1GB sticks, pulled older working 1GB stick from A and installed into B. Completed upgrade with just 1GB memory on B to 10.5.6 and subsequently pulled down all updates for OS X 10.5.8. Powered down, added second 1GB stick to B, booted into 10.5.8 successfully. Repaired disk permissions, restarted. Began using applications, then after only about 5 minutes experienced gray screen of death. Powered down, removed new 1GB stick, replaced with one of the two remaining new 1GB sticks. Read about reseting PRAM/NVRAM. Followed steps to reset PRAM then decided to do the reset NVRAM within openfirmware. Started back up and logged into 10.5.8. Ran several applications - did not experience gray screen of death after about 20 minutes use. Have not had time for further tests on B yet.
Back to my saga with A (my original iMac G5 that was working fine with 1GB stick on 10.5.7):
Called Data Memory Systems and they sent me a replacement for the 'bad' 1GB stick.
While I was waiting for the new 1GB stick from DMS, I was struggling to get machine fully updated. Software Updater was failing with the weird network error (network was fine) and after following steps to troubleshoot, I backed up the user accounts and decided to reinstall OS X fresh from the 10.5.6 retail box (family license). Finally, I had OS X 10.5.8 all fully updated on the 1GB iMac G5 (A).
New memory arrived, installed 2nd 1GB stick. Booted up, immediately I got the gray screen of death. Restarted, booted up got about 5-15 minutes use then gray screen of death. Puzzled, I called DMS who said unlikely I got 2 bad sticks. They suggested I try memtest. So I did...
So on A, I first ran memtest from single user mode on the 2GB config. It crashed immediately with some 'Unexpected' error. Did not look like a memory error. I powered down, removed 2nd 1GB stick, and ran memtest from single user on the 1GB stick. Ran all tests 3x over a couple hours - no problems found. Retested after swapping the 1GB stick for the other. Both tested fine. Installed both sticks again and ran memtest all tests, one pass (didn't want another 6 hours lost) on the 2GB config, and all tests passed. Booted up and got gray screen of death - I don't recall if it was on bootup or after running but I ran fsck with no disk problems found, then restarted, logged in, ran disk utility to repair all permissions. Some repairs were made. Restarted A, reset PRAM and NVRAM again, booted successfully.
I haven't had much time to run extensively apps on A yet. It's sleeping as I type this on another mac. My next test will be to reset SMU.
I'm starting to wonder if the original iMac G5 has firmware problems that would prevent it from being unstable with two 1GB sticks??? My experience on two identical models of iMac G5 plus reading this post with VERY similar behaviors and after all the normal tests. I've concluded the memory is A-OK and something more sinister is lurking...
    Any thoughts are appreciated.

  • 4GB RAM upgrade iMac 7.1 into a coma

OK. Trying to upgrade my Dad's 20" iMac (v7.1 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz) from its base 2GB RAM to 4GB.
Followed instructions explicitly and installed a pair of compatible 2GB modules from Crucial. Switch Mac back on and fan whirls but screen doesn't appear and machine 'acts dead'. NOT grey screen of death - just nothing - blank screen.
So remove one of the modules and the machine works fine BUT ONLY WITH 3 GB RAM. Doesn't seem to matter which slot the 2GB module is in, a total of 4GB results in the machine not starting. I got a replacement pair of modules from Crucial, incase one of them was duff, but the problem persists.
I've seen this posted a couple of times in other fora, but no solutions posted.
    Any suggestions?
    Cheers
    J

    Hi J
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
    Are they PC2-5300 667MHz modules?
The reason I ask is because a single PC2-6400 800MHz may work in that model mixed with a PC2-5300 667MHz module, but a pair of PC2-6400 800MHz modules will not.
If you ordered the correct specification modules and they are not working, then send them back and order from OWC.
