RAM Instalation

I currently have a MacBook Pro that runs on 512MB of RAM (One of the first builds) that only supports up to 2GBs. I'm a graphic designer (still in school) and use the entire Adobe suite. Not at the same time, ofcourse. Anyways, don't ask me how I mannage to run ANY Adobe Suite apps on 512MB (if you did ask yourself, the anwser is: a lot of patiance. And I do mean a lot). I finally forked out money today to run a one stick of RAM for my laptop. Hopefully I bought the right one. I decided not to purchase it at an Apple store because I feel they are highly expensive. I ended up buying it at an electronics store here in San Diego, CA (Frye's Electronics) and made sure I got someone who knew what they were talking about. Point being made is, can someone direct me to a page where they might have a step by step on how to add RAM to a MacBook Pro? I was wondering if it was possible to leave the stick already in it aswell (512MB).I was wondering if someone would fill me in on the difficulty of doing it aswell. Thank you SO much to whomever can help me out with this.

Macintosh HD/User Guides and Information. It's in the user guide - page 35or thereabouts.
It's incredibly easy and yes you can leave the 512 in. Make sure you gently but firmly push the stick in all the way so that the pins are almost entirely covered. Don't force anything and make sure you touch the inside of the battery compartment to discharge any static you might have before picking up the ram and installing it.
Best of luck.

  • Is the RAM installed correctly in my 'new' Mac Pro 1,1???

Hey folks, just picked up a used Mac Pro 1,1 2x2Ghz on ebay earlier this week to replace my 2Ghz dual core G5..
Im looking at adding some more RAM to the machine and am wondering if the person I bought this from even has the ram installed correctly.
When I opened it up, the 2x2GB sticks were both in the first two slots in the bottom memory tray. Luckily I had some RAM I planned on putting in it right when I got it out of the box (and then found out my 4GB of DDR2 SDRAM doesnt work with it hehehe), which required me to go look it up online before I even plugged the thing in, so I moved the tray with the RAM in it to the upper slot like the article I read said it was supposed to be..
Now I just read the Apple support doc that pops up when you click the Upgrade Memory link in the Memory tab in System Profiler and am confused even more..
Am I supposed to have both of those FB-DIMMs on the upper tray or do I need to move one of them to first slot of the lower tray??
Also, I noticed in the installation pictures, the top tray is pictured as being installed upside down, so the RAM in both trays is right above/below one another, but both of mine are right side up..
My Mac looks like everythings fine, system profiler shows me both DIMMs in tray A and isnt complaining... Gave Logic Pro a nice run the other night and havent really run into any problems or a KP yet.. Been reinstalling my recording software like crazy and no problems yet either..
Just wanted to make sure how its really supposed to be installed in case I could possibly end up frying something down the line..

See even the first two links posted have conflicting information.. According to OWC, I should have one 2GB stick on each riser, but that second link with the memory configuration pictures, the last config for the 4GB shows both 2GB sticks on riser A (thats actually the doc I was referring to earlier that I looked at when I first got the Mac) so I figured I was ok.. None of those options show one stick on each riser..
And again in regards to the way the riser is installed.. Apples own memory upgrade doc does indeed show the top riser installed upside down so the heat sinks are facing each other.. But every actual picture Ive seen, and OWC's own installation video shows them both installed right side up.. Now that I think about it after watching the OWC video, the riser cards are keyed, so I dont see how it would fit upside down in the first place..
I dont know I guess Ill just leave it like it is. I should be getting a pair of 2GB DIMMs hopefully in another week or so when money permits so Ill have both risers in use anyways..
Maybe mine is a later 2007 version of the 1,1 or something and there was a revision done??? Wish you could tell the actual date by serial number instead of just the timeframe the model was in existence hehehe.

  • I just had more ram installed in my 2009 mac mini and now there is no audio at all.

    Hi all,
I have a late 2009 Mac Mini which I update to mavericks. This was not a great idea. The performance has been aweful since upgrading. I finally looked into adding RAM. I was told by the Genius at my local store to buy RAM on line and bring it back to the store for install. I had the Ram installed today and I am satisfied that things function much faster now.
The problem now is that the computer does not make any noise. I have speakers plugged into the headphone jack but no noise comes out. When the system boots up, there are no beeps or tones audible. The speakers were all working earlier today when I unplugged everything to take the mini to the store. I also plugged the speakers jack into my phone and they work. I was able to connect a bluetooth speaker and play music through it.
I have tried to reset the PRAM but I"m not sure if I was successful. The instructions I have read for PRAM reset say hold keys until second chime is heard. I heard no chimes at all.
I am a novice when it comes to computers but I am good at following detailed instructions.
Any help would be graetly appreciated!

Yes, this was an Apple retail location.
I made an appiontment thinking that they would sell and install the RAM. When I got there, the genius looked up the specs for my mini and said they did not sell what I needed. He explained that the mini was older and out-dated. He looked up the specs on what RAM i needed and suggested that I purchase it elsewhere and bring it back for them to install. He suggested that I purchase a new computer but I couldn't justify spending $600 or more. I am a very light user and would only be wasting money on a newer set up.
It was when I returned that I was informed (by a different tech) that Apple would not be responsible for any damage that might occur during the replacement.
I decided to proceed anyway thinking that an apple tech was less likely to do damage than I was.
After taking it in the back and swapping the chips, he brought it out, plugged it in and proceeded to open a bunch of Ram hogging apps, graphing software, and internet sites. I was happy to see that the performance was greatly improved and the spinning ball was not dominating the system.
After I hooked it back up at home and tried to play some music, I realized that there was no sound.

  • 8GB of RAM Installed, only 4GB detected/used by BIOS/Windows 7 (with P67A-GD55)

Let me start off by saying that I'm not very good with computers. At all. I know a little bit about them, but I am by no means an expert. That said, I have 8GB of RAM installed on my motherboard, spread out across 4 sticks. However, upon looking at my BIOS and my Windows Resource Monitor, it declares that I only have 4GB of RAM installed and usable. This is what I know so far:
    - This issue has been prevalent as long as I've had my computer, and by extension my motherboard and my RAM sticks, so this issue isn't recent.
    - I do have a 64bit version of Windows 7. I've checked and double-checked, and I'm 99.5% positive that it is.
    - Speccy, a 3rd party program designed for checking system specs, declares that I do, in fact, have 8GB installed.
    - I don't think that the RAM is bad because the BIOS still does pick up on different statistics of the RAM that are in the slots; it just fails to register the actual fact that they're there.
    System Specs:
    OS: Windows 7 64bit SP1
    CPU: Intel Core i5 2500K  @ 3.30GHz
    RAM: Patriot PSD32G133K 4x2GB DDR3 @ 498MHz
    Motherboard: MSI P67A-GD55 P67 LGA 1155
HDD: 977GB SAMSUNG SAMSUNG HD103SJ ATA Device (SATA)
Optical Drive: LG DVDRAM GH24NS50 ATA Device
GPU: AMD Radeon HD 6870 1GB VRAM
    PSU: Cooler Master 750 Watt
    BIOS Version: E7681IMS V1.5
Now this is where it gets interesting: My motherboard has 4 DIMM slots for the RAM, and the motherboard (I assume by default) works in dual-channel mode. This means that DIMM 1 and 3 work together and so do DIMM 2 and 4, which most of you probably understand. However, filling up all 4 slots only gives me half the RAM. So I remove the RAM from slots 2 and 4, and it results in all 4GB of RAM being detected. Then, I add in each other RAM stick one at a time, and it fails to register both. So I remove the RAM from slots 1 and 3, and keep the RAM from slots 2 and 4, and it ends up in all 4GB being registered.
I feel like the answer should be directly in front of me, but from endless Google searches and posts on other forums, I have ended up at a dead end. I'm completely clueless, so I could really use some help.
Any and all help would be appreciated.
Also, if this is the wrong forum for this, feel free to move it wherever.

What is your current UEFI/BIOS Version?
The usual cause of such problems is (apart from bad memory slots or a defect of the processor's memory controller) a contact problem between the boards CPU Socket contact pins and the CPU's contact pads.  Broke or bent pins are one explanation, in other instances a heatsink that is fastened to tight can also cause such issues.
I'll have the BIOS version up in a moment, but I'll see about diagnosing if one of those problems might just be what is my problem. Any tips on doing that?
Also, BIOS version is up in the OP now.

  • Powermac G5 won't boot after new PSU replaced- says no ram installed!!!

I've recently inherited a friends old Powermac DP 2.0 G5 after it died a death. After some testing I diagnosed that that PSU had died in it- something that seems quite common.
Having found some detailed instructions online, I sourced a replacement PSU and set about replacing it. All went well with no major problems. I put everything back together and then powered the machine on. The fans whirled to life but there was no video out. I then noticed that the power light was flashing twice and then a break.
I checked on Apple's website and it was saying that 2 flashed is no ram installed. Yet there are 4 sticks installed - surely these all can't be dead? Has anyone got any words of advice? I'll be gutted if it's the logic board as the replacement PSU was really expensive....help!

Could be the RAM, sockets, Logic board, only way to tell is to swap them out.

  • RAM Install thwarted by black ribbon

I have a 2008 IMac 8,1 running Snow Leopard. Recently purchased upgraded RAM from 1GB to 4GB to improve processing. Now have 2 correct 2GB cards. The right slot had the original 1GB card. Removed it and successfully installed new 2GB card. In the left slot the black ribbon used to pop out the card runs IN FRONT of the connections and is preventing the card from seating.
What do I have to do to correct this? Is this something I can do at home or does this have to go my local Apple Store? If so, this is obviously a manufacturing issue but the unit is out of warranty. Will this cost a bundle? Hoping not. Thanks.

After some advice from my local Apple store I see now what the problem is.
The black ribbon pulls a "carriage" of sorts out of the memory bay. One end of the ribbon tab protrudes out of the bay for you to grab. The other end loops around the interior side of the carriage then folds back so that it lays flat against itself. These two pieces are stuck together with glue so the ribbon remains beneath the memory card at all times.
In my case, the top part of the ribbon became separated from the lower part because it came "unglued" allowing the top portion to pop into an upright position that blocked access to the "seat" of the card bay. The inside edge of the memory card was pressing against the ribbon, not the seat itself. I corrected this by using a tiny screwdriver to carefully fold the ribbon back down and press the ribbon to itself using the remaining adhesive. It worked.
    RAM installed and running well.

BEEP!! BEEP!! FAAAAANNN....... After RAM install.
    I installed two 1GB RAM chips into a recently acquired 17" G5 imac (1.6GHZ).
When I turn it on. It goes BEEP! BEEP! WHIIRRRR! (the fan).
I uninstalled it and put in the old stuff and it worked fine. Is the RAM bad? Or is it operator error?

Bad RAM. Hopefully you can return it and get new sticks.

  • G62 6GB (4GB x 1+2GB x 1) RAM instalation issue

    Hello Sir
I have HP G62 with 3GB (2GB x 1, 1GB x 1) RAM factory istalled. Now i wanted to upgrade it to 6GB (2GB orignil and 4GB new DDR3 purchased RAM), installed it. But laptop is not starting just on power on fan sound heared and gone and its gone again and again.
what should i do please suggest me
    Thanks

    Hello Suhaib,
Here are few things you can do.
Interchange the RAM slots could resolve the issue.
else check the RAM by doing this: Insert the 2GB RAM and check if the computer turns ON fine. Then insert the 4GB RAM and check if it turns ON fine. Do this on both slots to check if the slots are working too..
Another way is by running the Memory test from computer's UEFI.
    Cheers..
    Wish you luck,

  • 24GB/1066MHz RAM installed, but 800MHz are visible only, why?

I have 24GB/1066MHz RAM installed, but 800MHz are visible only on my Mac Pro mid 2010, why?

    That is a great question...
... for the vendor who sold you that RAM.
It has probably clocked-down because too many modules of incompatible types were installed.

  • HT3918 Does Snow Leopard use all the ram installed, I know that Leopard didn't.

Does Snow Leopard use all the ram installed, 10 gigs in my case. Leopard didn't.

You should be OK with that much, however, besides the basic needs of the OS, it will depend on how many and which applications are open and how memory intensive they are. Someone might easily get away with 4GB and someone else might have trouble with 16GB.

  • Mac Pro not starting after new RAM install.

    Hey everyone,
    I have a Mac Pro Mid 2010 2x2.66 GHz 6-core (12core) Mac Pro with OSX 10.7.5. I currently have 6gb 1333 MHz DDR3 ECC ram installed.
I ordered 16gb (2x8gb sticks) of RAM from newegg, specifically, 2 sticks of this ram:
Kingston 8GB DDR3 1333 ECC Registered Memory for Apple
I popped it in yesterday and when I try to start up, the LED light just flashes and the screen acts as if nothing the computer hasn't been turned on. It does not beep or make any startup sounds either.
As far as I can tell this memory is in spec. It is "Registered", could this be a potential problem? I have tried various configurations of which slots to put the ram in. The only thing I haven't tried is putting the 2x8gb sticks in by themselves to see if it might be a capacity or mixing of ram issue.
Does anyone have experience with this or know where I might be going wrong?

What you have not done is actually... what I would have done first to start with!
To make sure it works and works alone.
Mixing is suppose to work now, better, but as OWC found earlier, mix and match requires DIMMs that will.
There is more in depth on MacRumors about ranking, Registered and much more about using 3rd party and what to look for and does or does not work. Which is nice, they try and tend to keep everything in one place, one thread, easy to find and read.
And Newegg price isn't really different than say buying from MacSales.

    I solved the problem
    Update Firmware
Please be more specific, what do you mean by Firmware? EC Firmware or BIOS update? Please provide some links to this Firmware, that other may use something from your information.
I have got MSI GX60 3BE and it's the same as yours, but with smaller screen and I am going to upgrade my RAM to:
Kingston HX316LS9IB/8 DDR3L 2x8GB 1600MHz CL9 instead of those Nanya Elixir installed by default. I have got an information from Kingston official support that CL9 and this model of memory modules are excellent choice for GX60 3BE. The other option is Kingston KVR16LS11/8 which is CL11 as Nanya.
Will it be a difference between CL9 and CL11?
    Thank you in advance.
    Sincerely
    Best regards.

It can vary from one PC to the next, for instance mine shows 2.98 GB available. Normal average range would be from that to about 3.2 GB or so.
