RAM Issue = No Airport / Frequent Kernel Panics
Two months ago, I was having constant Kernel Panics on my PowerBook 1GHz 17" and never manage to make Airport work (the icon isn't showing on the top right corner with the others). My local Apple Authorized Service Provider told me that it was my RAM that wasn't well snapped inside my computer. Of course, everything went smoothly for the month, and I enjoyed wireless Internet for the first time... until yesterday!
At first I had a Kernel Panic while using Airport. I re booted, only to get another one. I tried booting in single-user mode and "fsck -fy" my drive, then "exit" and everything went well... I enter my login name and password: Kernel Panic!
I zapped the PRAM, but it didn't help. I opened up my computer, placed my original 512MB DIMM on the other slot, re booted... it works! Now I see my Airport, I connect to my router, I go on the web and 5 minutes later: Kernel Panic!
I tried the DVD that came with it (choosing the Apple Hardware Test at startup, holding the option key), and it saw EVERYTHING. I did the long test, and everything seems fine! Oddly enough, when I go check under my Hardware tab, it doesn't detect any Bluetooth peripheral; is it not seeing the Bluetooth card or a Bluetooth enabled gadget?
Anyway, I am thinking about buying new RAM to test if that could help. Right now, it doesn't see Airport again but my computer works fine... until I re boot, THEN it will give me Kernel Panics until I zapped the PRAM or do a "fsck -fy"...
The only thing that drives me mad is the fact that neither memtest (a command-line tool) nor Apple Hardware Test is telling me that there is something wrong with my RAM...
couple of issues - if your Macbook is 2010 and under - you're suppose to install 1066MHz RAM not 1333MHz.
while some Macbooks will run using 1333MHz RAM - your Macbook might not be one of them.
also note - some Seagate Momentus XT 500GB have issues with Macbooks.
the first thing you should do is to install your old RAM back and see if your issues stops - if not, then keep your old RAM in and install your old hard drive back and see what happens - if problems stop - install the RAM back in and see if it works with no issues - if problems persists, then you know your RAM is the issue.
if however, your issues are gone with the 8GB of RAM installed and your old hard drive installed - then your Hard Drive is the one causing you issues.
good luck - hope you get it sorted out.

Frequent kernel panics with MPB 2.0 with 2GB RAM
I have been having frequent kernel panics with my MPB. I have 2GB of RAM that came pre-installed from the factory. This seems to happen most often when I am using external firewire drives. Has anyone out there had similar problems?
I've done the permission repairs. Also zapped the
PRAM. Ran the hardware test off the installer DVD
and it immediately came back with an error code
(4MEM/1/60000000:) and told me to contact Applecare.
I called Applecare and they were not very helpful.
The operator I spoke with had no idea what the
error code meant. He told me that RAM either works
or it doesn't. The PRAM zap was done at his
suggestion. Hasn't changed a thing. The kernel
panics have only grown more steady over the past
couple of weeks. More frustrating are frequent and
repeated application crashes (even simple stuff like
Safari, Mail, Address Book and Preview). Applecare
suggested I do a clean install of the OS. But it
sounds like a hardware issue to me. The app crashes
are occurring in different accounts on my MPB. I
don't want to spent a half-day reinstalling all of
my software only to have the issues continue. I'm
going to try to re-seat the RAM and then make an
appointment at the genius bar to have them take a
look at this. It had been running perfectly for the
first few weeks.
If you had an error code during the Hardware Test your MBP has a problem. The 4MEM/1/60000000: maybe linked to bad RAM or not seated correctly. If not seated correctly it will not boot, so it sounds like a bad RAM slot or memory stick.

Frequent kernel panics on G4 PowerBook
I have a PowerBook G4 667 DVI running 10.4.8. Over the past few weeks, I've been getting frequent kernel panics. Every time I get one, the log entry is the same. I'll post it here:

It seems to me that the problem is somewhere in the ATI kernel module. I've run Disk Utility, fsck, and AppleJack, and all come back with no problems. I also ran the Apple Hardware Test and everything came back OK. I haven't added anything to the computer application-wise. In fact, the only thing that changed was the 10.4.8 update.
I don't really want to archive and install if I don't have to. Does anyone know what may be causing this?

Each of your panic logs begins with one of the following lines:
Unresolved kernel trap(cpu 0): 0x300 - Data access
or
panic(cpu 0 caller 0xFFFF0003): 0x300 - Data access
These indicate an 0x300 trap (error). The 0x300 (Data Access) exception indicates the processor could not perform a data memory access. Potential causes, in general terms, include RAM problems, hard disk corruption, and programming errors.
"Programming errors" in this case can include invalid instructions and violations of protected memory, however it is often difficult to differentiate a programming error from a RAM or hard disk problem since the latter two issues can cause a valid instruction to appear invalid.
As you noted, the Backtrace section of the panic logs flag your graphics card and related subsystems:<pre>Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependencies):
com.apple.ATIRadeon(4.1.8)@0x7ce000
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(1.7)@0x45f000
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(1.4.1)@0x6ab000
dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(1.4.1)@0x6cf000</pre>This may indicate a problem with the graphics card, such as bad VRAM (video RAM), but further testing is required.
See my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ. This FAQ includes step-by-step instructions for identifying and resolving some of the most common causes of kernel panics.
My FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work through to the end, following the instruction in the order specified, including the "If all else fails..." section if a cause or resolution is not found in an earlier troubleshooting step therein.
Good luck!

Frequent Kernel Panics for Macbook Pro (Late 2013)
Hi,
After a clean install of Yosemite, I'm experiencing frequent kernel panics. I'm using MBP (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) with 2 Ghz and 8 GB RAM. Looking at the problem details, there is no third party software that affects the system.
Things that I did:
Reset PRAM
Did a clean install of Yosemite
Ran hardware diagnostics (No issues)
Thanks. I appreciate any help.

MacBook Pro Mid-2010 15" Frequent Kernel Panics
Hello all,
I have been experiencing frequent kernel panic shutdowns (2-3 a day) since upgrading to Yosemite. To compound matters, after each panic is an additional restart as my computer is already in the process of restarting, so I never get the crash log or option to send it, and I can't decipher the logs in Console to find them--if they exist.
This is also happening to my daughter's identical model, and was happening after updating to 10.9.5 a while ago. I took my laptop to the Genius bar and they tried to tell me there was an issue with my video card (GPU) and that it would need replacing. I was doubtful about that diagnosis and opted not to repair (no time to give up my computer for the time needed anyway), and with my daughter's problem I seem to be vindicated. Prior to installing Yosemite I reinstalled 10.9.5 and was crash-free for a week before upgrading to Yosemite. Now the problem is getting worse, and reinstalling did not fix it.
I am attaching my daughter's recent crash log with the same GPU incident that the Genius showed me.
Any ideas or inspiration would be welcome.
Thanks,
Lou

Thunderbolt Bus:Thanks for your reply. But please try to understand why we (affected people) are not happy for this problem.
Actually Apple store's staff also told me that is known "H/W" fault when i brought my macbook to run VST last week.
Apple claimed this is H/W fault and suggested us to change logic board. The interesting thing is, this problem was existed from long time ago. Please check this URL > MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video - Apple Support
After read the page above, you should understand that version 10.8 or before also got this "H/W" problem but Apple tried to fix this for 10.8 or before.
From 10.9, no more support for this problem. Until 10.10 released, you may search "GPUPanic 2010 mid macbook" from google and you will see how many people was affected by this problem.
I also want to classify what is the definition of H/W fault. If apple can isolate the bug of the logic which was burnt on logic board (version 10.8 or before), then this is software fix for H/W fault.
If Apple OS development team can just check our macbook version from OS and escape the "H/W" logic bug, all 2010 mid macbook will not be affected again.
For real H/W fault, I don't think so many people will see same error at same period (after upgraded to 10.10) like this > ... AppleMuxControl/kext/GPUPanic.cpp:127
The important point is, Apple provided OS update for us before 10.8, then we didnt know the actual graphic card's problem.
We trusted Apple and bought macbook. But Apple told us that our graphic card got "H/W" fault and no more support from 10.9.
I like macbook and saved money to buy this in 2010. Using it carefully up to now. Finally Apple told me that my macbook's graphic card got problem and asked me to change(buy) logic board for fixing this problem.
In Sep 2014, I'd just bought new macbook for my girl friend which is new model 2014 15" macbook pro. I told her macbook is very stable and have no problem. What a big joke to me......and to all affected people. -
Frequent kernel panics/crashes on mid-2012 13" MBP
For several months I've been experiencing frequent kernel panics on my MBP. It can occur at anytime and is seemingly random. Sometimes I get green lines on the screen when it freezes, before it reboots itself or I am forced to do it myself.
The MBP is the 13" mid-2012 model (Yosemite 10.10.3)
2.9Ghz Intel Core i7
8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB
I've already taken the MBP to the Genius bar recently, and they completely reinstalled Yosemite for me, wiping everything off it and starting from scratch. For a day or so it was fine, before the problems started occurring again.
Sometimes when it's rebooting, it fails during this and reboots all over again.
I've been reading the forums for a while, looking for people who have similar issues, and so I've already got the log here through Terminal, hopefully this helps in identifying my problem(s):

Frequent Kernel Panics on Macbook Pro Retina 15" late 2013
Since a few weeks my Macbook Pro is suffering from frequent kernel panics. The logic board has already been replaced by the Apple but the panics keep occurring.
Machine specs: Macbook Pro retina 15" late 2013, 2.6Ghz Core I7, 16GB Ram, 1TB SSD. This is the model with the discrete Nvidia graphics card.
Already tried, clean install from usb, internet recovery, reset of SMC, PRAM, the machine passes the build in diagnostics and the Apple Store diagnostics.
The following panics occur without specific action from my part so they can happen when the Macbook is idle or when in use. There is no other software installed in the machine than OS X Yosemite and the latest updates.
Every kernel panic (currently 12 in the last 5 hours) show the latest loaded Kext, AppleHWSensor and latest unloaded Kext AppleFileSystemDriver which seems like more than a coincidence.
Hopefully someone can point me in the direction of cause of the problem.

PowerMac G5 frequent Kernel Panics
My Mac is a late-2005 model G5 Dual 2 GHz. Several months ago I upgraded from Tiger 10.4.11 to Leopard 10.5.8. Couple months later I started getting frequent Kernel Panics: Usually after running some maintenance software and a restart, but also after regular restarts (otherwise I leave my Mac on all the time), when couple hours later, always at night, I find the Mac shut down while the fans are loudly blowing at full speed.
I've alreday been running DiscWarrior periodically, as well as Cocktail. I also ran some hardware tests (DiscUtility, Drive genius, TechTool Pro) which found nothing abnormal with any of my hardware.
Based on what I've read, I checked my Console report, looking for "shutdown cause" and here's what I found next to each crash: (date, time) localhost kernel[0]: AppleSMU -- shutdown cause = 2 and I'm wondering what is the "2" meaning (the article I read was showing "3" as an example, though not explaining its meaning).
I'm already planning to open my Mac this weekend, reset the SMU (I understand my Mac has an SMU, not PMU), but before doing that, I'd like to know if anybody has an idea what is that cause = 2 meaning....
Thanks so much....But the last panic attack occured after a regular restart, no maintenace was performed prior...
That does not eliminate the possibility of third party add-ons being the cause, especially if there are third party items in startup and or login items.
Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items - The X Lab
Could you please detail more about what Shutdown cause = 2 is all about?
I will give you a (probably incomplete) overly simplistic explanation...
All that I can tell you is that Unix based systems log everything that occurs normally, with logs of exceptions or abnormal events also occurring.
Shutdown events that occur normally, or, normally within driver/kext flow, are logged as (usually) 0 and 1, with other codes possible (such as 2 and 3).
I have yet to find a Unix code guide that adequately differentiates which is what, and do not write the language, but cannot find reference to any non-negative numbers being abnormal with regard to the action.
With regard to irregular shut downs, crashes that cause shut downs are typically not logged due to interruption of the CPU write processes.
When a shut down fails or occurs due to a failure, that will be typically be logged as a -1.
Other shutdown causes such as user command or force quit will also have logs but not typically numbered.
Since your shutdown cause = -1 isn't what you have, I believe that your shutdowns are software inflicted, either by the BSD alone (less likely) or due to third party add on action (most likely).
I think that your software, somewhere, is dumping conflicting commands into the system. This is likely what causes the freezes, crashes and shutdowns.
My first suspect would be any regularly scheduled maintenance software.
I would UNINSTALL it.
Maintenance software really isn't necessary anyhow..... Most all of it simply capitalizes on built in OS X operations and simply provides a UI that allows user manipulation and addition of third party kext scheduling.
I have used nothing but disk utilities and OS X built in kron scripts for years in all my systems (I currently run 6). Once in a blue moon maybe a cache cleaning utility, but ONLY when there is abnormal behavior. Improper or too deep of a cache cleaning can destabilize a system. Maintenance utilities have this potential... ALL of them.
For the purposes of troubleshooting though, like with anti virus software, uninstalling is a must. It can always be put back if one really wants it.
Not to discount hardware, though. A VERY common source of kernel panics (that is the real issue) is failing or failed RAM.
Download Rember or Memtest X and test ALL RAM. Memtest X in Single User mode does the best job at testing all RAM at once. This is the best way to find the hard to find random errors that can drive one nuts..... -
Frequent kernel panics on my macbook 5,1 (late 2008)
Hi all,
since some week I'm experiencing frequent kernel panic on my macbook unibody 5,1 (late 2008).
I tried to upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mavericks but this didn't solve my problem. Now I started with a new clean installation of Snow Leopard, but after a few of hours I experienced an other kernel panic.
I hope someone of you can help me with the issue. I report below the crash log, could you read in it what is the problem?

AndreaKernel panics indicate either a driver that is corrupted, a directory that is corrupted, or marginal hardware.
When hardware test is unrevealing on an erase and install, then RAM is usually the culprit. Never install third party RAM without the age of the Mac and the model specified by the RAM manufacturer. http://www.macsales.com/ and http://www.crucial.com/ are two with a lifetime warranty that do that.
If your data is backed up, the directory can be examined, or an erase performed to isolate possible hardware issues. -
Airport causing kernel panics and kp in safe boot.
Last week I got my first kernel panic in years. It happened while I was asleep and checking an extrenal drive for bad blocks with TechTool. It turns out that the drive indeed had bad blocks and found that the cpu was shut down when I awoke. I started up the computer and it wasn't able to stay on for more than 10 min max before the next kernel panic. I checked here for more advice on kernel panics and started to try to narrow the number of culprits. Everything was unplugged and still kp. Instaled a new drive with a week older system from Time Machine and still kp. Reset NVRAM and replaced pyhsical RAM and still kp. Removed the Airport Extreme card and still kp. Booted into Safe Mode after all of the previously mentioned and still kp. I'm now going to take the drive and swap it into another body that I have to see if the root is actually on the drive on the physical hardware of the cpu.
I was interested in this thread and read all of the links that jpl posted. Airport causing Kernel Panic (?) Jason then replied that it had been solved due to a "permissions problem" I wish he gave more info on what exactly he did to resolve the problem as it's been almost a week now without any work being done for me.
I've also noticed this very strange behavior that might shed some light onto the issue. When I open System Prefs and close the window there is a strange colored pattern that will always flash after the window has been closed. I tried to post it to my me page but for somereason it wouldn't play for me so there's that and the YouTube version too.
https://www.me.com/gallery/#100008/Prefs%20Screen
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zrTt88YdBo
In addition when the computer has started up and the system loads. Checking Activity Monitor shows that there are 50 or more threads active for the the kernel_task. Inspecting this doesn't seem to show any useful information.
Finally here are a few of the recent crashes I hope that someone might be able to shed some light on this extremely frustrating problem for me.

Thanks in advance,
MaxMy vision is pretty poor, still cant see it, but...
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
Correct any Disk problems.
Repair Permissions.
Clear out Cache Files.
Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process. -
What could trigger frequent kernel panic?
I've sent my macbook for servcing & they have reinstalled the OS yet I still get frequent kernel panic. What could be the cause?
Could be any number of things not the least of which could be you've installed some third-party software that is incompatible.
However, they could also be due hardware problems such as a defective hard drive or bad RAM or a RAM module that has been improperly seated. It could also be caused by incompatible peripherals, defective Airport card, etc.
Take it back for service letting them know that the kernel panics have not ceased.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics. -

Frequent kernel panic during boot up
Hi,
I am having frequent kernel panic during system bootup. It takes atleast 3-5 attempts for the machine to boot-up without a panic. It is not consistent. I have disabled dropbox and removed firefox and chrome which I suspected was causing the problem.
Any idea what could be causing the panic? Once the system boots up, it some times stays up for a long time before a panic happens again.
The error report is below. Let me know what other details are required to trouble shoot this issue.
System: iMac 27"

So I decided to upgrade to Mountain Lion. I was able to download it through App Store and start the installation. Everything went through fine and finally when it had to restart, it took a long time and stopped at the grey screen showing the prohibitory sign.
After waiting for quite a long time decided to hard restart the machine. Same issue. So used the option keys at bootup and went into disk utility.
Verify disk permission threw up some errors. Then Verify Disk started throwing up errors and stopped in between and suggested to run Repair Disk.
When I ran the Repair Disk it threw up an error mid way and said:
Error: Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restor your backed-up files.
I ran Repair Disk again and it went through fine. No issues this time. Ran fix permission option as well. That also went through fine. Then restarted the system.
No use - It still shows the prohibitory sign and progress circle....just stays there....
Any advice on what next?
Thanks,
Sudhir -
I have a 2010 macbook pro currently running 10.6.8 that has served me very well over the last 4 years, except in recent months it has been getting frequent kernel panics. Started every few weeks, now happens multiple times a day. It seems to happen more frequently when I'm doing something like playing a game which makes me think it might be related to the GPU or the computer overheating, but I can't find any specifics on how I'd go about troubleshooting from here. A typical report after a kernel panic is below:

You may be able to use gfxCardStatus 2.3 to switch to using the other GPU instead which should stop the frequent panics until you get the motherboard replaced or buy a new computer.
Of course don't dismiss the possibility that the software you have installed has installed extensions that are not compatible:
com.cisco.nke.ipsec 2.0.1
com.quark.driver.TetherBerry 1.0.0d6
com.parallels.kext.prl_vnic 7.0 14922.693916
com.parallels.kext.prl_netbridge 7.0 14922.693916
com.parallels.kext.prl_hypervisor 7.0 14922.693916
com.parallels.kext.prl_hid_hook 7.0 14922.693916
com.parallels.kext.prl_usb_connect 7.0 14922.693916
Try running in Safe Mode to see if the panics stop. If they do, then you need to completely uninstall the software responsible for the above extensions: Cisco, Quark, and Parallels. -
Frequent kernel panics in World of Warcraft
Lately I've been getting very frequent kernel panics in World of Warcraft. I've also experienced longer than usual startup times. I re-installed the game and made sure all the patches were up to date, then, when the problem persisted, I did an Archive and Install of Tiger and patched that. I also repaired my permissions, and deleted WoW cache files and prefs. I ran Memtest, which found no problems, however, even in single-user mode, it only tested 868 MB of RAM when I have 1 GB installed. The latest panic log in the list looks like this

Also, see if the kernel panics stop if you Safe Boot. Hold down Shift at the startup chime. It will take much longer than a regular boot, so give it time. You can let go of Shift when you see a progress bar loading. It will bring you to a login screen with Safe Boot in red letters.
