RAM issues under OSX ML

I updated my MBP (2GHZ i7, 8GB RAM) to OSX ML 10.8.2 some weeks ago. Now I recognized that my system stats say I only had 4GB RAM (2x2GB instead of 2x4GB before) installed. Did somebody have the same issue???

It may be that one of the RAM chips is not being recognized.
What exact model MBP do you have?
What are the RAM specifications of the new RAM?
Switch the two RAM chips and what are the results?
If you have the old RAM, install that and what are the results?
Ciao.

  • RAM issues continued

    Hey everyone!
I was just reading an archived post from around this time last year entitled "Strange RAM issue." I too have had a strange RAM issue and specifically with my G4 PowerBook (15", 1GHz) and OWC. I also wanted to upgrade from 512 to 1GB and could never get the machine to work at 1GB. I am currently in the process of sending back my third consecutive OWC brand RAM to them and they are finally going to send me some TechWorks memory that I'm hoping will work. I just can't believe...every single set of memory they've sent me has tested out "fine" to them either after I sent it back or in the latest case even before they sent it to me. But it never works in my computer and always fails the Rember test.
Their latest take on it is that the Rember test isn't always reliable and that it's probably a problem with the memory port in the computer in that it won't accept outside (aka non-Apple) memory. What are some people's thoughts on this? Is it possible that the memory port could work just fine with the original computer's RAM and not with new RAM? Is there any truth to Rember not being all that reliable of a test? (If so, why would they have you use it?)
I'm really getting frustrated with OWC and I was wondering if that's just me or have other people had this same problem?

APPLE HAS A RECALL for this! READ BELOW AND SAVE SOME MONEY!!!!
Anyone with these issues needs to see this link. Apple has a recall going for G4 15" AL PBs because one of the two RAM slots die. Mine has been "fixed" twice under this program. There's a number to call to get started. Be forewarned, the person on the end of that phone is not the sharpest tool in the tool box. I had to show him where the recall was on Apple's site and how to interpret it. He had to keep putting me on hold to check with a Powerbook Expert (his title was only Powerbook Specialist). They send you a nice prepaid DHL 24 hr turn around shipping box. First time was great. Second time it came back covered in sticky. greasy fingerprints and the metal around the case screws has been badly scratched. I'm still waiting for Apple to address this but since they found 3rd party RAM in my PB, this is my punishment. FWIW, if you let it go in the broken state too long, bad things could happen. Something from the corrupted RAM wrote to my HD and ended up causing all sorts of issues. A reformat and reinstall was the only cure. Here's the link: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303173
A few private repair places on the web get over a grand for this repair. The repair is a complete new main logic board exchange. Big bucks.

    Hi
After upgrading to osx 10.9.3, my external hard drive was not able to mount, but it can be mounted without issue in osx 10.6, how do I solve it? it was formatted by disk utility.
    Thanks

    From the menu bar, select
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Power Adapter
and uncheck the box labeled Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible, if it's checked.
If the drive has more than one interface (USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt, eSATA), try one of the other interfaces.
Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends.
    Try a different cable.
If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
Test the drive with another Mac. Test another drive with this Mac.
If the drive is bus-powered, but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter.
Start up in Recovery mode and launch Disk Utility. Is the drive recognized?
Start up in Safe Mode and test.
    Reset the NVRAM.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, and if another drive does work with the same Mac, then the drive has failed. You may be able to salvage the mechanism by removing it from the enclosure and installing it in another one, or in a drive dock.

  • Creating an Aperture web page from photos the page goes white and nothing displays. Is this a RAM issue?

I have just purchased an iMac 27" 2.7GHZ running OSX 10.7.4 with 4GB RAM (16 GB has been ordered). I am using Aperture 3.3.2. When I attempt to create a web page from photos the page goes white and nothing displays. Is this a RAM issue?

I have resolved the issue....turns out that, in my case, running OSX 10.8.1 with Aperture 3.3.2 was what was required! I was running Aperture 3.3.2 with OSX 10.7.x and had this issue.
I hope this helps someone else as well.

    Hey Daniel,
First it would be helpful to know exactly which iBooks you're talking about.
CPU speed, screen size, OS and RAM installed.
So how do you know the all three have onboard RAM issues? Does system profiler just show the 0 slot as empty?

  • Installation of Flash Player 11.9 under OSX fails with case-sensitive filesystem!?

The installation  of flash player 11.9 aborts with an unspecified error. I running OSX 10.9 with an case-sensitive filesystem. Can anyone confirm there are problems with the installer on case-sensitive filesystems?

The problem isn't the filesystem per se. It's bad software quality if pathnames defined wrong or multiple times with different notation. Often there is only one or two letters with the wrong upper or lower case. I guess in the current Flash installer this is the case. With the previous versions I had no problems.

My Mini isn't case sensitive, so I can't really say but I had two iMacs when I worked at Intuit that were case sensitive and they had all kinds of software installation issues. One of the Mac developers at Mountain View told me that Case Sesnitive shouldn't be chosen as a format except when a system is isolated and used as a testing server. For a workstation or home computer, it's a terrible choice for a setup.

  • New PowerBook AirPort and RAM issue

Sorry to re-post but thought others could benefit from this being up top here ...
I have a new 17", but have a big red flag for people.
I couldn't get the extra RAM (over 512MB) from the Apple Store where I bought it Saturday, so I ordered it online from Apple and installed it last night. Easy! Then, PROBLEMS!
After about 20 minutes online, suddenly the cursor's skittering around, CPU spikes to 100% and stays there (kernel_task, owned by root, takes over), and AirPort drops. Can't find any networks, and stays offline. Only known fix is a reboot.
I checked MacFaxIt and see these exact symptoms are an issue, supposedly acknowledged as a bug by Apple, with mid-2005 iBooks. I guess you can add late-2005 PowerBooks to that list.
Looks like the key is to keep RAM usage under 1GB, which is not necessarily easy to do (and goes without saying, should not be something you need to manage). For example, loading a lot of tabs automatically in Safari kills AirPort pretty consistently. Loading a lot of widgets does the same.
I'm walking on eggshells with this PowerBook, constantly checking CPU usage and AirPort connectivity, NOT something I want to have to be thinking of.
So be careful adding RAM. My last PowerBook (very last gen) had 1.5 GB and NO PROBLEM.
I don't know of any timeline for a fix, and am more than a little upset that (1) the problem exists on a $3,000 machine, (2) Apple has known about it since late summer, and gladly sells you the RAM (caveat emptor), and (3) the in-your-face that the PB and iBook are probbbbbably kinda sorta the same, under the hood! So I'm telling myself that yes, it's a SOFTWARE problem with OS X, the extra RAM, and AirPort. Works for me ...

I MAY have a potential solution.
I had the same problem as others, bought the Powerbook with 1 GB Apple memory and then I added another 1 Gig of Kingston brand memory. Almost immediate problems and after a reboot, the problems would come back in 5 minutes or less.
I called Apple and they refused to even acknowledge that it was a known issue.
OTOH, the tech had me remove the new 1 GB memory stick and of course the Airport card worked perfectly after that.
Anyway, when I put the memory card back in, I seated it quite firmly before I "folded" it down into the latches.
Bottom line is that Airport has now been working for over 4 hours with no problems.
Can anyone else who is having the problem please try this & post the results. If the solution is this simple, it would be a wonderful thing.
The System Profiler showed that the memory was there before I reseated it, so if it is just a bad card install, System Profiler does not pick it up.

  • Ram issue with X58M board

    Hello
I wonder if some one could help me one...... 2-3 years ago i bought a new pc system..... but i still have ram issue!
    my PC contains: MSI x58m bios version 3.8 , i7 950 3.07Ghz, Crucial Ram 1333 6GB (1gb x 6) DDR3 240pin , video card ati Club 3d HD4890, Win 7pro SP1 64bit
from day 1 i had problem - unexpected restarts...... my pc store exchanged mother board twice, gpu 2 times and 1 time ram..... nothing helped i only lost 2 weeks! But pc started working fine only after in bios we changed the ram MHz from 1333 to 800mhz! after that system was stable no restarts
could some one plz tell me what is the problem and how to avoid it?

but for some reasons i cant use 1066
that is simple to explain 1066 would work with 3 sticks of ram installed but you have 6 so the max is 800mhz as you have 2x3 channel memory installed and the cpu cant handle that much at full speed!
its all down to the CPU's (Central Processing Unit's) memory controler Quote from: anat_usa on 10-July-12, 18:09:15

    club-3d.com/index.php/products/reader.en/product/hd4890.214.html
    seems like should be ok.....
not the point wattage ratings are meaningless its all down to how that is sub-devided on its rails as ampages i have a 1000W psu here that can't boot a single 24A graphics card as it has 4 x 20A +12v rails and is only usefull as a paper weight!
what are the ampages of its +12V rail or rails? there the important data points to pay attention to! WATTAGE OF A PSU REALLY MEANS NOTTHING ITS ALL ABOUT AMPAGE IT CAN DELIVER ON THE RAILS!!!!!! minimum Wattage psu calculations are done based on a single high ampage +12v rail and if yours has 2-3 +12v rails its no better then a 300W psu at best!
that HD 4890 you have requires this:
    18A idle power draw = 216W
    28A under load = 336W
that is very power hungery at idle probaly neer the max your psu can put out on a +12v rail!

  • Keyboard Trackpad frozen under OSX

    Hi,
This morning when I switched on my computer, keyboard and trackpad seems to be frozen under OSX and they do not seem to work. I tried connecting a USB mouse but that didn't work either. Surprisingly, keyboard works when I startup and press option key to use bootcamp partition. Under windows (bootcamp), keyboard seems to work fine. Any workaround or solutions? this is annoying. I have all the latest updates installed.
    thanks

got it. ..i had enabled DFU for iphones using that free floating script so I reupdated 10.5.6 using vnc client. Just in case any one else faces the same problem check this thread:

The Canon drivers available from Apple Software Udpate were updated last month and they include a later version of the CIJAutoSetupTool - now v10.72.2. However, with reference to this list regarding drivers that are available, I do not see your MP950 as a supported model.
So I was going to suggest you trash the contents of the BJPrinters folder located in /Library/Printers/ and then add the printer, which should download the latest driver from Apple. But if you definitely have an MP950, then you will not get a driver from Apple and would have to rely on one being available from Canon.
So did you install a Canon driver for the MP950 after installing Mavericks or was the printer already installed on a previous version of OS X and you upgraded to Mavericks?

  • RAM Issues: 4GB installed, 1GB showing After blinking light

    Hey Folks,
After doing some research online I found that my recent issue, which has come up in the past, was probably a RAM seating issue. The issue where the Fan begins running loudly at hyper speed. I forced a shut down, restarted up and saw no issue. Shortly there after the issue returned. I forced a shut down once more, but this time was met with a blinking power light.
I remembered from past experience that it was a sign of RAM issues so I unplugged, unseated and reseated all four of the RAM on my cards. Initial start up was met with same response. In fact it wasn't until the 6th or 7th seating and reseating, and RAM position switch that I got the computer to start back up. (The initial successful start up was with one card and what should have been 2GB.)  I checked the About this Mac.. and saw Memory listed as 1GB 667  MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM. The 1GB threw me off because at that moment there should have been 2.
Shortly there after I backed some things up and tried reseating the other card with the other 2 gigs in it. This time I was able to start up however the System still shows the Memory as 1GB 667 MHz...
I did notice a single red light on one of the cards and am curious if this is trying to tell me anything, or if this is an indication of a poor installation. Also looking for any advice on why the computer is not seeing all 4 gigs, and if some of them may be out of service.
Any advice would be much appreciated, and please pardon my lingo because I'm not sure all my wording is correct.
    Thanks

    Failed RAM.
Stop beating yourself up over insertion technique. These things get mighty hot and they FAIL.
If they have a reseller's sticker on them, like Otherworld computing or 1-800-Memory or such, call them and ask for lifetime warranty replacements. Otherwise, think hard about how much RAM you really need and go buy some.

  • RAM ISSUES A215-S7407 - PSAFGU-01V002 SUSPEND MODE ERROR WITH 4GB RAM

Hi, im having some troubles with my laptop.
Because it comes only winth 1GB RAM (512MB x 2) i decided to give it an upgrade to 4GB (Max Capcity) according to specifications details on the support site. So i bought two (2) DIMM Modules KINGSTON 2GB 667MHZ, exact model # KVR667D2S5/2G Everything was working fine until i close the lid and it suspend.
Normally, when i open the lid, it will wake up, and everything will work fine, BUT NOW when it wakes up i have distorted sound and horizontal lines on screen, and sometimes i get a BSOD (BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH) and it restart itself.
    TEST THAT I MADE:
ONLY 1 DIMM of 2GB  - IT SUSPEND AND WAKES UP NORMALLY (I tested both Dimms 2GB separately)
    1 DIMM 2GB / 1 DIMM 1GB (TOTAL 3GB) - IT SUSPEND AND WAKES UP NORMALLY
2 DIMMs 2GB  (TOTAL 4GB) - IT SUSPEND AND WAKES UP WITH DISTORTED SOUND AND HORIZONTAL LINES ON DISPLAY.
It seems like the problem appears only with Max. Capacity (4GB) RAM and only when it suspend CLOSE THE LID (POWER LED CHANGE COLOR BLUE TO ORANGE AND FADES AND COMES).
With Hibernation, it works fine, the problem is when it suspend.
It looks that the problem is on the motherboard, maybe a NEW BIOS RELEASE that fix the situation.
I appreciate if somebody can speak to TOSHIBA SUPPORT DEVELOPER and ask them for an BIOS Update.
i know that im not the only one with this problem, there is another person that wrote a post "RAM ISSUES" and refers to the same situation, but as i guess, it wasn't solved at all.

Make sure you install the memory when the light is not flashing, i.e. completly off not sleeping.
What if you try adjusting - MSCONFIG/Advanced Options/Maximum Memory

The 150:30 error means licensing broke.
Two ways to fix this: If you are used to the Terminal app, you download the license recovery package and following instructions carefully, you use the python script in the package.  Error "Licensing has stopped working"  | Mac OS
If for some reason it doesn't, reinstall CS4 from your discs, or download the CS4 installer here.

  • How to use orignal XBOX gamepad controller S under OSX ? (not xbox 360)

    Hi,
i'd like to use my original xbox (not XBOX 360 !) controller on my MBA running under OSX 10.7.
I tried to install Xbox HID Driver 1.3.4 for Mac OS X from http://xhd.sourceforge.net, but installation failed under Mac OS X 10.7 Lion.
I'm getting an error message during installation.
So, is it possible to use my old xbox controller with my mac ?
    Thanks !
Here is the controller what I'm talking about : the "controller S"
I bought a USB adapter for this controller :

I am trying to do the exact same thing. Like you I failed to install that driver. Doesn't seem to be much else out there. Let me know if you have found anything. Think I will just have to step up and buy another controller.
Sorry to be of no help..but you're not the only one to have this problem if that means anything

  • Mail 1.3.1 under OSX 10.4.3?

After six weeks of trying to live with it, I'm still finding Mail 2.0.5's user interface considerably less configurable and more annoying than Mail 1.3.1. I'd like to go back to Mail 1.3.1, which I found in my "Previous System Folder".
However, double-clicking Mail 1.3.1 produces no result. The application doesn't launch. Showing package contents, navigating to
Mail --> Package Contents --> Contents --> MacOS --> Mail and double-clicking Mail brings up a Terminal window that gives me the following:
    % /Applications/Mail.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail; exit
    dyld: Symbol not found: _DeleteSeenPOPMessagesCompleted
    Referenced from: /Applications/Mail.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail
    Expected in: /System/Library/Frameworks/Message.framework/Versions/B/Message
    Trace/BPT trap
    logout
    [Process completed]
In contrast to this, when I navigate to the same place starting from OSX 10.4.3's Mail 2.0.5 (Mail --> Package Contents --> Contents --> MacOS --> Mail) and double-clicking Mail launches Mail 2.0.5 immediately and produces a Terminal window that says the following:
    % /Applications/Mail/Mail\ copy.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail; exit
Is there something I can add, subtract, modify or tweak to allow the older version of Mail to launch and run under OSX 10.4.3?
    Thanks in advance...
    PB-15" G4/1.5, G4-867 tower   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

It's not the new look I dislike (much), and I do not need assistance managing my mail.
What's bugging me is the grossly reduced functionality. I can't choose whether the mailboxes are to be on the left or the right; Apple has decided I didn't really want them on the right, even though I foolishly thought I did. I can't reliably selectively delete text by highlighting and hitting [delete]; Apple has decided that when I do that, I really mean to delete the entire line of text and not just the selected words. I can't start with a narrow search (only in a particular box, only in a particular part of the message, for instance) and widen it as needed; Apple has decided I always want to start with the widest possible search and narrow from there. Very, very obnoxious: I'm smart enough to have a good enough job to be able to afford several recent-model Macs, but Apple feels the need to treat me like a six-year-old and not trust me with the ability to make my own decisions about how my own machine should work. I cannot find a single, solitary thing that's better or easier about Mail 2.0.5 than in Mail 1.3.1.
