RAM issues when plugging in external devices

When I plug external devices in such as a USB drive, iPhone or a Firewire external HDD the RAM usage on my Mac shoots up beyond normal levels. This has only started happening recently.
Say for example I plug in my iPhone to sync it. With only iTunes running (no other programs in the dock at all), I get the force quit box come up asking me to close programs down because it doesn't have enough RAM.
I don't get the force quit box come up when I plug USB devices in but the Mac still becomes nearly unusable.
Any ideas how to reset or fix this RAM problem (or whatever else it might be)? Everything else is fine, I can numerous programs that require lots of RAM with no problem at all.

Try resetting the PRAM and resetting the Systems Management Controller.
PRAM
1. (Re)start and immediately press & hold the CommandOption+PR keys
2. Listen for two startup chimes.
3. Release all keys and let the Mac start normally.
SMC
1. Shut down the Mac and disconnect all attached cables; power, USB, FireWire, Ethernet, etc.
2. WAit 15 seconds.
3. Reattach the power cable and a USB keyboard & mouse.
4. Restart the Mac.
5. Reattach all hot attachable peripherals.

  • Firewire issues (HD dismounts when plugging in other devices)

    I've got a brand new Mac Pro with a Seagate 1T external firewire drive connected to the firewire port on the back of the computer. I also have a Lexar firewire CF card reader plugged into the firewire port on the front of the computer. Whenever I insert a CF card into the reader the external drive drops off with the error that it was not put away correctly. When I eject the card the external appears back on the desktop. I've had the same thing happen when plugging in an old iPod that uses a firewire connection. When it appears on the desktop the other Firewire device drops off. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot?

  • Using music app on Iphone when plugged into a device

    A feature I would like to see added is being able to control my phone through the music app when it is plugged into a device rather than it being disabled. I mainly listen to music in my car and my radio interface is not very user friendly when it comes to navigating through my music. However if I use pandora when I plug in my device I can control the app from my phone. This is a feature that should be compatible with the music app so that I can control it through my phone which is more user friendly.

    Try a reset when your iPhone is plugged into the charger as you say it does not respond when not plugged in...
    Press and hold the Home and On/Off buttons simultaneously until you see the Apple logo, then release.  This may take up to 10 seconds.  This is the equivalent of a re-boot and you will not lose any data.
    See if it will charge after this.

  • IMAC 27" issue when use as external display

    I just boought an IMAC 27 inches, I have an issue using it as external display for my macbook pro. both machines support thunderbolt. The issue is not connecting it  from my macbook pro to IMAC, but when I want to release and use my IMAC again as computer by clicking CMD F2, the connection did not get released. I tested using IMAC at apple store and it works fine. I can connect and disconnect using CMD F2. finally I checked the thunderbolt firmware in my IMAC and compare with the one at Apple store. They  are not the same. the one I have is Port Micro Firmware Version:          2.1.1 and the one at Apple strore is Port Micro Firmware Version:          2.0.7. is there any fixed?

    This is only possible by setting up ScreenRecycler or using Virtual Network Computing; all of these methods work over an Ethernet, FireWire, or wireless network.

  • Red light glows when plugged in, but device wont respond

    I've had the red Curve for nearly a year now. Today I accidentally knocked it off of my desk onto the carpet. It was not a hard fall, but when I picked the device up it seemed to have turned off. It would not turn back on viathe power button, so I attempted tor emove the battery. As I struggled with the back of the device, it seemed to start working again. I got the white screen with the hourglass that usually comes with the reinsertion of the battery. However, when I finally removed the battery and put it back in, the device would not respond. I plugged it in to the AC charger and the light glowed red for a few seconds, but the phone did not respond otherwise. Every time I unplug it and plug it back in, the red light glows but nothing else happens. I tried putting in a different battery but it didn't help. Can anyone tell me what is wrong with my blackberry? do I need to simply leave it plugged in?

    it's black. There seems to be nothing wrong with it except that the light turns red when I plug it in and it simply wont respond when I press buttons. There is nothing rattling inside and nothing seems broken at all. I heard that when phones are dropped, they may lose their battery power. Does this happen? If this is what happened, shouldn't the light then be green?

  • Phone does not ring when plugged into external speakers

    Is there a docking speaker that will allow the iPhone to ring for incoming calls when plugged into speaker listening to music?

    Hi Alicia,
    All of the iPhone compatible speakers listed here: http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shopiphone/iphoneaccessories/speakers?mco=MTU2NjIwMw should allow the iPhone to ring while in the dock.
    You can also see a rating and reviews for each dock.

  • Windows XP slow login when plugged into external network

    Hi,
    A about 9 months ago XP SP3 was rolled out with an image upgrade, since then there has been rumblings of slow logins when connected to an external network (eg a ADSL modem at home) but no evidence etc.
    About the environment
    Windows XP SP3
    Novell Client 4.91 SP5 IR1
    ZENworks 7
    Roaming profiles with folder redirection for Desktop, My Documents.
    We have just rolled out another upgrade to a number of base apps and this has come up again but with some evidence and some time for me to investigate.
    What I have discovered is this:
    When a laptop is plugged into an external network (I have used an ADSL network here at work to test this) the login for a user takes about 2 minutes with SP2 and about 3.5 minutes with SP3. This is done checking the workstation only box.
    This happens consistently on workstations.
    What I have done to narrow this down is as follows:
    Removed ZENworks 7 agent. Login times improved dramatically
    Installed older versions of ZENworks agent, all results the same, extra slow logins experienced with all versions tried.
    Installed ZEN agent and removed Novell Client, still the same slow login.
    Created a local user, fast logins experienced even with the ZEN agent installed.
    Disabled all ZEN services and logged in with an eDir account, slow logins all the same.
    Removed all policies from user and workstations, this made a slight difference but nothing much
    Disabled ZEN, no difference either
    Disabled NMAS, no difference either
    Removed some IDM installer we had rolled at the same time, no difference.
    Here are the timed results.
    XP with SP2 on corporate network = 30 secs
    XP with SP3 on corporate network = 35 secs
    XP with SP2 WS only ticked and ADSL modem plugged in = 2min
    XP with SP3 WS only ticked and ADSL modem plugged in = 3min 26 secs
    XP with SP3 WS only ticked and ADSL modem NOT plugged in = 45 secs
    XP with SP3 local user with ADSL modem = 45 secs
    So it's down to the ZEN agent really, but the update to SP3 hasn't helped either.
    I enabled debug logging and got the following from the log, usernames and servers have been removed:

    OK, I'm out of Ideas.
    I was hoping for something much bigger :>
    You may want to post in the MS Forums in regards to the Timeout in that
    part.
    I would not mention ZCM or Client32 as that will just cause pushback.
    In short, there appears to be a long timeout for the redirected profile
    that extends beyond just client timeout settings.
    You may want to post the the Client32 Forum to see if they have anymore
    timeout tweaks.
    You may be able to use the "Bad Name Cache" to pre-popate that server so
    you can gain the 10 seconds w/o needing to disable the workstation service.
    Perhaps the "Give Up on Requests to SAs", but I've never messed with
    that before. Wait before giving up on DA may help too.
    Just guessing now.

    Yes, I have tried different firewire cables and such.  Removed my firewire hub, tried plugging into the actual ports on the MacPro and plugging in the firewire ports on the back of my Cinema 30 display.  I even bought a new firewire cable just to make sure.  So for now I guess I am going to downgrade my MacMini to Snow Leopard and use that machine to do video capture.
    So last night I removed the primary harddrive from the MacPro.  I installed a new 1TB harddrive. Formatted that drive and did a clean install of Mountain Lion and ran all software updates.  Crashes when I plugin my firewire cameras with no other software but the OS.
    So then I reformatted the drive and did a clean install of Lion and did all software updates.  Still crashes.
    I formatted the drive for a third time, this time installing Snow Leopard.  Did all software updates.  Plugged in my cameras one at a time and no crash.  I installed iLife '11 and was able to video capture with iMovie via the firewire port.
    I am pretty convinced that my hardware (at least) is in working order, otherwise it would have crashed with Snow Leopard also (correct me if my conclusion is incorrect).  So I am inclined to agree with you that I may have triggered a bug in the OS.
    Thank you for your insights.  How do I go about reporting this issue to the Apple Software Engineers?

  • Wireless issues when plugging into Mac display

    I have noticed that no matter where I am in the house, my Macbook Pro works with my Airport just fine. But when I plug the laptop into a 24" display, my wireless signal does one of two things: it drops a connection, going from full strength to nothing and back again, bouncing back and forth in a slow rhythm, or it will give me a huge drop in strength. Anybody have any idea why this is? Your help is greatly appreciated.

    I also have the same issue, specifically similar to that of DimBimbleby, since I am using my MacBook (2008) connected to one of the Apple 24" LED Displays via an Altona converter in the mini-DVI port. The laptop works excellently when not plugged into the display, as do my DVD player (streaming Netflix) and my AppleTV (will never figure out why I bought that) - as soon as the monitor is plugged in, the internet is either extremely sluggish or does not work at all. It took me a bit to figure out that it was only after the display is connected (moved both things all around the house of course). Does anyone at all have ANY idea how to fix it or improve it?? It's really frustrating and I certainly did not pay all that $$ for the display for it not to work with internet. I recently sold an older style 20" ACD Monitor which never had a single issue working with the internet. I have a Linksys Wireless-N router which is not the greatest ever but works well with everything else. Please help!!!!!

  • Issue when calling an external web service - CRM 2013

    Hello everyone.
    This is my scenario:
    I'm doing a real time data integration from CRM to another software. I deployed several plugins, mostly in create/update messages, for the entities i want to sync. The developers of the other software gave me the endpoint of the web service and I created the
    client using svcutil. I manually created the binding and gave it to the generated client, along with the endpoint. At the first tests I could sync some registries, but I had some mapping errors. I debugged the plugin, corrected the errors, and when I
    want to tests again, the plugin is throwing me an exception when calls any method of the web service. Let me explain the issue:
    The exception:
    I instantiated the client for the web service (passing to it the binding and the endpoint). And when I'm trying to call any method (ex. Add), it throws the exceptions "InvalidOperationException". I started to debug the code and I notice that
    just before to call the web service method, the state of the client stills in "Opening". Of course that is generating the exception.
    The complete exception is: "The communication object, System.ServiceModel.ChannelFactory`1[IAxxisWcfServices], cannot be modified while it is in the Opening
    state."} System.SystemException {System.InvalidOperationException}
    I did a test, outside the CRM environment, on a console app with the same conditions of the web services client (generating with svcutil, manually passing the same binding and endpoint), and the same order of the plugin code, and everything works well; The
    state of the client never stills in 'Opening', so I discarded any problem with the web service.
    Anyone knows if I'm missing something in the code? or some configuration?
    The CRM is 2013 On-premise with last updates.
    Thanks in advance.

    I tried adding the web reference in a console app and works fine. In the plugins this can't be done, because the plugins are deploy in database.
    I tried another basic test using ChannelFactory. Only want to retrieve some entity through the external web services:
    IPluginExecutionContext context = localContext.PluginExecutionContext;
    IOrganizationService service = localContext.OrganizationService;
    ITracingService tracer = localContext.TracingService;
    try
    BasicHttpBinding binding = new BasicHttpBinding();
    binding.Name = "BasicHttpBinding_IAxxisWcfServices";
    binding.Security.Mode = BasicHttpSecurityMode.None;
    binding.Security.Transport.ProxyCredentialType = HttpProxyCredentialType.None;
    binding.Security.Transport.ClientCredentialType = HttpClientCredentialType.None;
    EndpointAddress endpoint = new EndpointAddress(@"http://*****.svc");
    ChannelFactory<IAxxisWcfServices> factory = new ChannelFactory<IAxxisWcfServices>(binding, endpoint);
    IAxxisWcfServices channel = factory.CreateChannel();
    var entity = channel.FindByEntities(new CRM.Application.Context.Dtos.Asegurado( { CrmGuid = "7C3E96C6-C3BC-E411-80DF-0A736AE14667" }, null, new CRM.Framework.Session() { User = "***", Password = "***" });
    catch (Exception ex)
    throw new InvalidPluginExecutionException(ex.Message);
    That test threw the following exception on the GenericParameterAttributes of channelType of factory object:

  • User authentication issues when auth by external radius server

    We tend to use FF in a corporate environment to manage our networking devices (firewalls/switches/routers etc). Came across a bizarre problem under the following conditions:
    ZyXEL Network Switch (GS2200-24) uses external authentication (RADIUS) to allow management and accounting of who makes changes.
    When logging into the switch with FF, we get repeated prompts for user authentication. Eventually the user is logged in (and no it's not a typo!). Looking through the dev console in the beta, it seems to get a 401 unauthorised back from the switch once it tries to load another html file.
    The browser *should* be presenting the same credentials to each called page within the site, it doesn't seem to :-(
    No site added as it's an internal IP address....

  • Touchscreen Issues when plugged in?

    So I'm having (what seems to be) a unique issue. When I have my iPhone plugged in to the wall charger, my touchscreen is about 50/50. Texting becomes a nightmare, because the touchscreen doesnt recognize my inputs. I can push the spacebar, and it thinks I pushed the large EDIT button at the top. Cant even come close to putting sentences together, because its just not calibrated. Unplug it and it works perfectly fine.
    ANYONE had this issue yet, or do I just need to make a phone call and exchange?? This issue bugs me almost as much as the proximity sensor making me start FaceTime, mute people, and hanging up on people... but no DEATH GRIP problems here!

    Try unplugging the charger from the wall outlet, turn it 180º, then plug it in again. (The prongs will now be in the opposite holes in the wall outlet.) If it now works properly, then the charger is defective, and has some current leakage from the high voltage input to the low voltage output. This could be dangerous, and the charger should be replaced.

  • Plays automatically when plugged into a device

    Hi. My touch is running version 3.1.1. When I plug my touch into a device, usually my clock-radio which has a built in cradle, it starts playing the first song from my library automatically. Is there a way to prevent this? Very irritating when I have another app running - such as a radio app, and the library takes over...

    1) Check the Mains outlet is ON...

  • IPod Classic video stops when plugged into external speakers

    Whenever I'm playing video and plug my iPod Classic into external speakers (doesn't matter the speakers, it happens with all of them), the video stops playing and the screen behaves as if I'd pressed the "Menu" button. Extremely annoying when playing video playlists.
    Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Yep, it's through the dock. I don't get why Apple keeps "updating" and taking away features. It happened when at first you could shuffle "songs" and "videos", and the videos would play as such. Now they play as "songs", only audio without video.
