RAM kernel panics -- what's your story?

Been reading about quite a few instances of kernel panics caused by bad RAM modules. I suddenly had two kps this week out of the blue ("Uncorrectable Fbd memory error detected"), no luck diagnosing the problem yet but I need downtime from all my projects to give it some attention. I have 3rd-party modules from OWC, but I've also heard that Apple modules can be bad as well.
I'd like to hear from any of you who have had kernel panics related to bad RAM and if you've had any luck in figuring them out -- if so, what finally worked for you?
My specs:
Mac Pro 2.66
Apple stock RAM 512mb modules in slots 1 and 2 of Riser A, OWC 512mb modules in slots 1 and 2 of Riser B.
Apps running during kernel panic: Final Cut Pro, Safari, TimeOut!, Console.
Misc: G-Raid 1TB plugged into front FW800 port. 2nd internal drive is 500gb Seagate.
Tests run: Rember and Applejack, no probs found.

Thank you all for responding, I really appreciate the advice. It's so frustrating that bad RAM can't be isolated any easier than going through all these steps.
I ran Memtest last night in single-user mode so it could check the max amount of RAM at once (1.9 out of 2gb). I let it cycle 3 times: nothing.
I'll try re-running the AHT with looping but from what I've seen the Hardware Test rates far below any of these other tools for finding RAM problems.
I'm going to re-seat all my modules and riser cards tonight, see if that helps; the service guys would do this anyway so I might as well do it first to see what happens.
Clearly replacing the RAM is in my future, but what if I can't identify which ones? I have to call both Apple and OWC and I'm worried they'll both blame each other's product.
JK

  • Kernel panics: what does "Core FIR register check failed" mean?

I have an XServe dual G5 2.0 running Server 10.3.9 unlimited client version that began experiencing frequent kernel panics when I let it install the two most recent security updates. Before I installed those updates, the machine had been up without problems for 220 days.
It is not heavily loaded; it runs a Bugzilla via Apache2, shares some files out via SMB and AFS, and runs a jabber server with less than 20 users.
It generates entries in /Library/Logs/panic.log, but I can't make any sense out of them because they only have numeric entries in the stack traces and a bunch of register values.
I've tried a whole bunch of smallish suggestions on fixing problems with this, including repairing permissions on the disks, repairing the boot volume with Disk Utility, resetting all the NVRAM values, and resetting the PMU. Today I installed Xserve Remote Diagnostics and ran the normal, extended, and memory tests.
The memory test completes without errors. The normal and extended both get errors on the FIR. I've attached the log text from XServe Remote Diagnostics.
Is or could this FIR problem be what's causing my xserve to kernel panic? Anyone have an idea what I can do about this?
    Thanks,
    Frank

I see that "Panic(CPU 1): Unresponsive processor" and that makes me "feel" like it may be a hardware error.  It could be ram related.  Maybe not.
Can you run the Apple Hardware Test from your installer dvds?

For some reason, after running hardware test (Apple), disk utility to check out disk etc., then used Onyx and ran full maintenance. Also did a thorough test of the memory using "Rember". I have not had another Kernel Panic. My next step if needed will be a RAM re-seat and a fresh OS install.

  • Kernel Panic - what procedure should I follow?

    Hi,
I was working on an e-mac and I was wanting to get iTunes 6. I am running Panther 10.3 and when i tried to download the new ITunes. I was told I didn't have the right software. I therefore went to the Software Update in the Apple icon at the top left and performed the software update. I selected the Apple downloads I thought I needed. After downloading them the Kernel Panic happened. The screen is black with the Apple symbol but when trying to restart nothing happens.
Perhaps I didn't download all the right software. Also, perhaps ITunes 6
needs Tiger - is that right? I got the Tiger update disk and have overinstalled that but nothing has helped.
I think the computer is a 768Mhz Emac with 384 RAM but I can't get to look at it as it won't start. As it is an Emac I don't think there are no PCI cards or any extra hardware installed.
Is there a standard procedure I should follow when I get a Kernel Panic? I'd really like to sort the problem without losing everything installed on the computer if possible.
    Here's hoping you can help,
    Thanks,
    Hoodledoodle

    Heather,
If the tips in AxL's helpful post don't work for you and you need to follow up on iFelix's mention of reinstalling via an Archive and Install Feature, a few points to emphaize:
-- when updating the OS (in your case, to get to 10.3.9 to use iTunes 6), it's a good idea to download and use the stand-alone Combo Updater.
-- after the 10.3.9 Combo updater is is place, use Software Update to ID applicable security updates and install those only. ITunes 6 I believe requires you also update to QuickTime 7.0.3; do the QuickTime update as a separate step.
-- applying one major update at a time takes longer than applying a bunch at once, but it makes your life easier in terms of troubleshooting, and it avoids the possibility of some combination of simultaneous updates doing something the programmers never foresaw.
-- after each major software update (OS, security, QuickTime, etc), after the computer restarts, open Disk Utility and run Repair Permissions on your hard drive.
-- Remember that the progress therometer bar on 10.2/10.3 will typically go to 100% and stay there for an extended time while the Installer reports 'optimizing system'; it's not really stalled, and force-cycling the power switch at that step will likely hose the System and require one to start over. This bites people occasionally (espcially if you're on the fourth upgrade step in a row at 3 AM local time).

  • More RAM = Kernel panic

    Greeting
(Excuse me for my bad english)
I have a MacPro late 2011, and about 3 months after I bought it, I'm using it with other Memories they are DDR3, and they were just fine but after 2 years of being used it began to give me kernel errors just when I wanted to update to Mavericks at the point of dont even start just kernel panic after kernel panic and reboot and boot for all times, but I was able to get in with the safeboot, and I manage to found that was the RAM, so instead of 8gb (2 sticks of 4) im using just 1 stick, no matter in witch bay I put it works, but never 2 at the same time (gives Kernel Panic) no matter if is 4 and 2, o 2 and 4, or 2 and 2 (which only recognizes 1 of them) and I've tried using the Original ones but Dosent work, so what could it be?
PD: I could update to Mavericks (10.9.2)
    Thanks

Defective slot or motherboard, most likely. You will need to take it somewhere for service.

  • Kernel Panic-what else can I try?

    Hello.
I've been trying as many suggestions and tips as I can find out about but cannot get my MacBook Pro (2011-snow leopard) to come back.
It fell 2 or 3 feet to a hardwood floor after my leg caught the power cord (and it did not release). It landed still open in a tent position. I had an external HD connected at the time. When I tried to use it, clearly something was wrong. Main menu titles were missing letters and curser movements were erratic. I could not access the shut down option and had to hit the power button to turn it off. When I powered it back up I got the dreaded Kernel Panic. I did as it said and tried to shut it off and turn it on but kept getting the same thing.
I began searching online using another machine, searched here and elsewhere. I tried many things, including trying to start up in Safe mode (resulting in a totally grey screen and eventually a damage icon-circle with line thru it. I tried resetting the Ram. No difference. I also booted from original install DVD. It did boot and I was able to access Disk Utility, but it pretty quickly reported that it  "stopped repairing the HD; can't repair this disk; back up files and reformat the disk, and restore the files." Of course I can't do that. Lots of red text which read "invalid B-tree node size."
After a few more tries using different tips and suggestions, I decided maybe I could access it via Firewire Target Disk Mode." I connected it to my Mac Pro via Firewire 800 cable and tried it. The MBP did come on and it shows the firewire symbol drifting slowly back and forth, light gray background. But it does not show up on the Mac Pro desktop. I tried Disk Utility but it does not show it anywhere.
In a last ditch effort, I started up a Data Recovery App. It did show the MBP in the list of connected volumes. I selected it and clicked the start button. It's been running for a little over 24 hours and shows 18%. However, I really can't tell if in fact it is searching the MBP. Once started it only reports the percentage.
I don't want to quit it since I've gone this far but don't have high hopes. Besides, I would much rather "fix" the MBP rather than recover files, reformat it, etc.
It seemed like a relatively minor hit and I'm surprised at the problem. But don't know what else to try. Just a note, I live in a remote, rural area and there are no Apple stores, no less geniuses, anywhere nearby.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    Allan
Thanks. I know I wrote a lot and who wants to read through all that?
Anyway, I did already exhaust what the Apple Knowledge Base had to offer but now will try the X Lab suggested steps. I followed you link but am commited to this data recovery process since I've running it so long - day and a half - might as well let it finish. I'll post anything noteworthy. Thanks again.
Anyone else have a suggested solution I am still very much open and hoping.

Does it KP in Safe Mode?

You have the MacBookPro6,2, the Edsel of Macs. It may have a logic-board defect covered by this recall.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider, to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers do not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue that Apple calls "VST" (for "Video Switching Test.") Ask for it. A "Failed" result means that the fault is present. However, according to reports, some units may pass the test, and yet still be deemed eligible for repair under the program. Your experience may vary.
Print the first page of the panic report, if any, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.
Note that the recall only applies within three years of purchase. After that, Apple may refuse the service. In that case, you may be quoted a price of about $300 (in the U.S.) for a "depot repair," which involves shipping the unit to a central repair facility and takes about two weeks. For that flat fee, anything found wrong with it should be fixed, not just the logic board.
The model was discontinued on February 24, 2011, so the recall has nominally ended. Some units may have been sold after that date by Apple as refurbished, or by resellers as new, and they should still be covered.
Some owners report that their unit was repaired under the program after the deadline had passed. Others report that the repair was covered by the extended warranty from a credit-card issuer. Again, your experience may vary.
Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility.
If it's too late for your unit to be repaired under the program, and you don't want to pay for a new logic board, you may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching.
If you're dissatisfied with Apple's response, please keep in mind that no one here represents the company or can help with customer-service issues.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • New Kernel Panic Issue (Followed Your Advice)

I posted a thread a few months back about a friend who is having a persistent kernel panic issue. Some of you got back to me with some consistent advice- boot off the install disk, run a diagnostic. I haven't seen the computer since, but recently my friend took a job and left his computer here for me to see if I can fix it.
I popped the install disk in and started the computer holding the "d" key as instructed. I am getting something I have never seen- a constant repeating:
    "! OUCH !!! : mshdlr loc zero not zero ! 00007007000000000h @:eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh"
This just repeats itself up the screen, over and over. Eventually, the hardware test box came up. I hit next, it started all over.
This is a 20" Intel iMac running Tiger 4.11. HELP ***?!?!?!

    iCrane128:
can this be because I am using my gray install disk from my 17' Intel iMac on his 20" Intel iMac?
It can, indeed. Do you have the original disks for the computer you are testing?

  • My first Kernel Panic, what should I do?

I've had my new MacBook Pro (17" 2.33 GHz, 2GB ram) since April 14, 2007 and I had my first Kernal Panic today. Since Apple Care is now closed for the day, I was wondering if anyone knows what I should do--if I should talk to Apple Care about this yet, or wait until it happens again. I was in Safari, when it stalled and I got the message that I wasn't connected to my wireless, so I clicked on to the Airport to see if I had lost my wireless connection, and then I got the screen that says to hold down the power button in multiple languages. When I rebooted, it asked me to tell Apple what I was using when the KP happened.
I have bootcamp and Xp Pro loaded but not much more since this is all relatively new to me. I do have the Apple bluetooth keyboard and wireless Mighty Mouse installed and working.
I would greatly appreciate any help or comments!
I've copied the panic log below:

If it persists, then contact Apple. Otherwise it was probably a fluke and you don't need to worry about it.

  • Kernel Panic: What does this mean please?

Several days ago I downloaded 10.4.11 update and got an icon placed on my desktop. I double-clicked it and it said it didn't recognize it, so I put the icon in the trash.
That night when I tried to shut down it progressed normally until I got a dark screen. Then, just when I thought it was closed down, up pops a rectangle that says "You need to restart the computer. Hold down the power key for several seconds."
I held down the power key, and instead of the computer starting back up, it turned off. I didn't think much about it. But then the next night it did the same thing again, and again last night.
It has only done it on that one user account where I downloaded the update to my desktop. And one night I verified permissions, verified the disk, shut everything down one=by-one, and disconnected before shutting down, and it did not do it that night. But did do it again the next night. Here is the report that it gave me:

Does anyone understand what this is saying? And what I should maybe do or not do?

    Cyan,
I'm not an expert in this field, but I can suggest the catchall "Archive and Install" option on your Mac OS X Install DVD. "Archive and Install" backs up your current system folder (and also your documents, music, and pictures), and installs a fresh system on your hard disk. You can then drag the "Previous System" folder to the Trash after the installer is finished. I am going to assume that the Mac OS X 10.4.11 update caused this, as your computer seemed to be working properly before the update.
To "Archive and Install", start your computer from your Mac OS X Install DVD (by holding down the "C" key with the Install DVD in the drive as your Mac boots). Next, after you see the Mac OS X Installer, follow the prompts until you reach the "Destination" screen. Once you select your current hard disk, click the "Options" button in the lower left-hand corner of your screen. In the window that appears, choose the "Archive and Install" button, and *make sure* that the "Preserve Users and Network Settings" is selected. Then, proceed with the install. Once the installer completes and you have a working system, open your Macintosh HD. There, you should see a folder called "Previous System". Once you are sure that your current system is working, you may drag this folder to the Trash, and then empty the Trash. If you need more help with "Archive and Install", please look at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120.
Also, once the install completes and you have a functioning system, *do not* download the Mac OS X 10.4.11 update. 10.4.11 has been known to cause problems for many Mac users. You can download the Mac OS X 10.4.10 Update from http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10410comboupdateppc.html for PowerPC processors, and http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10410comboupdatev11intel.html for Intel processors. These are "combo" updaters-they will update any Mac OS X 10.4 version (from 10.4.0 to 10.4.9) to version 10.4.10.
    Good luck!

First of all - Thank You all very much.
My problems started 3 months ago.
First, my Mac crashed while watching, video.
It happened several times during 2-3 hours.
After that, I lost my startup disk.
No problem, I thought - I have my Time Machne backups.
I used extarnal disk to startup, and manually backup all my work from my MacBook disk which at that time, was read only. I also made a dmg image from that disk - just to make sure all my data is safe.
I reformated and tested the oryginal MacBook disk with DiskUtlity. There were no errors.
After that I tried to mount the dmg image - with no succes. Now 3 months have past, and I still have no acces to any of my files - photos, music, mail, work. File seems to be OK, but there is now way I, and 3 guys who seem to know somethig about data recovery are able to mount that image. I did try Data Rescue 3 and Salvage Data Recovery for Mac Demos - with no results. I'm not sure what my 3 friends were using, but the seem to have same results.
    What about Time Machine Backup?
When I plug the TM disk, it asks me for the password. But the password does not work.
For some reason the is no option for password recovery after 3 attempts.
I did contact Apple support. After 2 weeks of mails and calls they suggested disk reformat.
I did try - but I need the password to do that - password is not working....
I upgraded Sunflower, I will replace the memory for the right type.
Hope this will solve my problems - at least with the Mac
Once again - Thank You Very Much!
    - Michał

  • Kernel panic: what is ffa3e680

I think I need to remove a bad RAM pair, not sure which pair…

Hi Terry, try one pair at a time, most likely it's the inner ones, or even more likely the inner slots themselves.
If you're sure the RAM is good, try the Hair Dryer trick...

  • Constant Kernel Panics.. even with new RAM?

So I was at the genius bar yesterday and they told me they were going to run a huge diagnostic test on my late 2008 Macbook Pro. They assumed it was the RAM and gave me good info on where to order it from. I ordered 8gb RAM because I figured, why not upgrade?
They called me today, said it was the RAM malfunctioning. I go back to the store, they put in the new RAM.. I come home and everything is GREAT. woohoo! and then... a few hours later, it started again. I mean really?
I just added 8gb new RAM and am still having kernel panics. what is going on?
It's so random. and It doesn't make much sense.
    Any advice, anyone?
