  • Can I install two different RAM sizes in my Early 2011 Macbook Pro 2.0 GHz

I just bought me a 8 GB 1333 Mhz RAM for my Macbook Pro. I installed it in slot 2 and I installed the stock 2 GB RAM in slot 1. Is my decision good to have two different sizes RAM in my computer. It is showing me I have 10 GB RAM in my system, and I think my computer has become little faster, but t I had expected that it would be much more faster since I have 10 GB instead of 4 GB.

    Boysovereign,
the speed of your MacBook Pro will only increase by installing additional RAM if the apps which you run were constrained by their previous amount of RAM. If they weren’t being constrained by the previous amount of RAM, then adding more RAM won’t affect the speed at which they run.
That being stated, you’ll suffer a minor performance hit by using two memory modules of different capacities; to maximize your MacBook Pro’s performance, you should install two memory modules of the same capacity.

  • Plz help me with the compaitble ram module

    hey
i have a problem getting the RIGHT ram module. i got a MacBook Pro 15.4-inch 2.16GHz Core 2
    Duo (MA609LL/A)
i wanna 2g ram. the one i bought (2GB SODIMM LOW DDR2 PC5300 667MHZ)worked for 40 days and then died. so i dunno what it is id need to buy.
here's what the vendor had to say in reponse,
+At first glance , I thought that memory was just bad and regular exchange+
+would work . But after reading one post online, I contacted manufacturer+
    support.
+This is unique scenario for you. You do need LOW density memory module for+
+Apple MacBook Pro 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (15.4-inch) Laptop, but your System+
+manufacturer is picky. What they need is not same spec as we have advertised.+
+Their requirement is slightly different and there is cost difference.+
+These are two Options for you+
    +Option 1 : Refund
    +Option 2 : Upgrade+
+Option 2A : Memory upgrade from OEM manufacture. We have purchased from them+
+and they are reliable. Price difference is low and it is what you need without+
+spending bunch with major manufacturer. Cost difference is $ 17.50+
+Option 2B : Memory upgrade from Major manufacturer as specifically recommended+
+by Manufacturer.. Price difference is high but then you know it is what you+
+have been asked by manufacturer to have . Cost difference is $ 18.50+
    +Thank you+

Crucial is 1000x better and more reliable than some random seller on Ebay. I wouldn't buy RAM from Ebay, especially when you can get the same thing for $1.00 more from a much more reputable seller.
If you have 1GB of RAM now, an upgrade to 2GB will make a big difference. I've enclosed links below to single 2GB chips that will be compatible with your MBP from both Crucial and OWC.
    CRUCIAL
    OWC
You can decide which you like better, they are both $48.99 I believe.
same thing to me, except for the brand name, i guess.
The brand name is relatively important with RAM. Macs are selective about good quality RAM; dodgy RAM from just any random seller on Ebay may not work, as you found out. With either of these resellers, you also get a lifetime warranty. Anyone on these forums will tell you that they will stand firmly behind their product if it ever fails. Ever. You can't get any better than that.
doesn't apple make one one of these? an apple brand?
No. Apple uses third-party RAM in all of its machines. Apple does not make its own brand of RAM.

  • Mixing RAM Modules (1gig + 2gig = 3gig)

    Hello,
I am about to buy a Mac Mini and I am on a tight budget. The one thing I want to do for sure is upgrade the memory, but I'm in a quandary of sorts given my budget. The retailer where I want to buy the Mini from only sells the appropriate RAM for the Mini in 2gig modules. So here's my question: I know it is possible to mix the stock 1gig stick with a 2gig stick to get 3 gig of RAM total, but will it be worth it to me? I realize that the best configuration would be to slap in 2 2gig modules in and just be done with it, but with 3gig, would I be appreciatively shooting myself in the foot and killing the machine's performance, or wouldn't I notice? I need to have the memory installed at purchase because I am physically handicapped and adding the memory myself is out of the question. And after researching how to replace memory on the Mini, I wouldn't have the courage to ask anybody I know to attempt to do it after buying it. Is mixing RAM modules a good idea?
    Thanks in advance.
    Malcolm

Nope, I am not confused, There does have generation between Mac mini model. Maybe not official, but we all know. Check About This Mac ---> More Info ---> Model Identifier : Macmini2,1 (That means, 2nd generation)
    Macmini 3,x (means 3rd generation I supposed)
And the 3rd generation doesn't support Dual Channel, referred to Crucial.com

  • How much Ram can I add to my MacBook Pro?

Another non-techie here with a memory question
How much RAM can I add to my MacBook
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro2,1
    MacBook Pro (late 2006)
Processor 2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Current memory: 2GB (two SO-DIMMs) 667 MHz DDRs SDRAM (PC2-5300)
The actual installation sounds quite simple.  I just want to be sure I get the right chips.  Any sources you can recommend?

  • How many RAMs can i install into my macbook pro-13 inches?

I'm considering to buy RAMs for my mac, originally there are two 2GB RAMs installed,is there only 2 plugs? Do i need to replace the original RAM or i can just add the new RAM into my mac?

There are 'only' two slots for RAM modules in the 13" MacBook Pros.
So you have to replace the RAMs that are curently in it.
Pick the one you have from this list http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/index-macbookpro.html to see how much RAM you can out into it.

  • PowerMac G4 having problems with new RAM modules!

    dear all,
I’ve recently got 2 512 MB Ram module from a British eBay dealer, to be used on 2 different but very similar PowerMac G4 AGP Graphichs 400 MHz machines.
I installed the first module in my father’s Mac, and it works fine, no problems of any sort. Then, a few days later, I installed the other module in my PowerMac, and immediately it started behaving very erratically: some programs didn’t open at all and others crashed with no warning, I tried to run Rember but it soon get stuck. I assumed the Ram module was faulty, emailed the dealer (who’s been very helpful) and then sent it back to get a replacement. The new module arrived yesterday, I installed it... and it was even worse: as some programs didn’t open as soon as the new module was installed, I rebooted the PowerMac but it hasn’t been able even to load the OS anymore, it just stopped at the blue screen forever, once came out a black screen and a Darwin login, but nothing else. As soon as I removed the Ram module the PowerMac started to work perfectly again.I'd assume again there's something wrong in the Ram module, but isn't it too much unlucky to get 2 faulty modules one after the other, or maybe the problem could somewhere else, in my PowerMac?!?
Unfortunately I can't test the new module in my father's machine, as we live 700 kms apart.
    My hardware details are:
    Power Mac G4
    Model: PowerMac3,3
    CPU: PowerPC G4 (2.9)
    1 CPU
    CPU Speed: 400 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
    Memory: 896 MB
    Bus speed: 100 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.2.8f1
    thanks!

ok, I've now tried every possible combination... but with no success
First, taking out one of the "old" 128 MB I realized it was one of the High density DIMMs (chips on one side only) Japamac was mentioning, in total 2 of the 128 modules were like this. However, taking out one or both of them, or even having only the "new" 512 MB module in, hasn't changed much, sometimes the OS booted, sometimes not but there were always some programs not opening/crashing and Rember got stuck with an error message. With just the "new" module the booting stopped at the blue screen (only blue, no apple splash screen in the centre).
With the new module plus one of the old 128 MB modules (the one with chips on both sides) Rember got stuck very soon, and the error message was:

  • 648 Max - Identifying but not using both RAM modules

    Hi!
I'm totally new here, just stumbled across this forum while googling for a solution to my problem, so please excuse my lack of proper terminology if that should occur.
I have the following system (data obtained from Everest 2.20 and own brain):
P4 2,80 GHz, no OC, no HT
    2x Crucial PC2700 DDR-DIMM 1024MB 2,5-3-3-7 @ 166 MHz
    MSI 648Max (MS-6585)
PowerColor Radeon X1950Pro AGP 256MB GDDR3, no OC
    Thermaltake Toughpower 850W Modular
    Hitachi Deskstar T7K250 160GB IDE
BIOS (this is my weak spot...) Everest says BIOS type AMI, dated 28/1/2003, no info other than that
WinXP Home SP3 + all updates AFAIK
In general, the system is originally ready-built Fujitsu-Siemens system from 2002 (i think), but heavily modified by me (RAM upgrade, HDD upgrade, several GPU and PS upgrades).
My problem is that the computer only occasionally uses both RAMs (i.e. showing 2,00GB RAM in My Computer's properties). More often than not, however, it only shows 1,00GB RAM. AFAIK this problem is pretty recent, and did not occur when the RAM was new and installed by me. I have tried to systematically testing the two different RAM modules separately in each of the three DIMM slots, and the computer booted and ran Windows desktop at idle without problems in all configurations. I therefore dismissed the possibility of both MB and RAM failure, and reinstalled both modules in DIMM 1 & 2, where they have always been located. The computer ran with 2,00GB of RAM for a day, then reverted back to only 1,00GB the next morning. Tried moving the RAM in DIMM 2 to DIMM 3, and the computer ran another day on 2,00GB. However, this morning it was back to 1,00GB again.
Through all this, Everest 2.20 has always detected both RAMs in the correct slots, but have displayed 1024 and 2048MB memory on the System Summary page. Rebooting the computer without dismantling it and fiddling with the modules does apparently not change the usable amount of RAM back to 2,00GB when stuck at 1,00GB.
Anybody know what the issue might be (since none of the components seem to be faulty by themselves) and how to solve it? Please keep in mind that my BIOS skills are shoddy at best (but successfully flashed the BIOS once by help of an official guide, no stability issues after the upgrade), so detailed instructions regarding that might be a bit over my head. The same goes for overclocking or manually adjusting any voltages or freqs, which I've never tried.
    Thanks in advance!
EDIT: Apparently a total power-off reboot (power down, PS power switch off, push and hold power button till lights go out, switch back on, power up) seems to reset the RAM to the correct amount of 2GB. Any clues?

The voltage to the memory might need to be raised one notch.  That adjustment is done in the bios.
You can download the motherboard manual from this link.  http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloadfile&dno=3576&type=manual
Section 3 page 27 thru 28 cover the adjustment of the memory voltage.
This is for a retail motherboard.  I do not know if your motherboard has this in its bios.  It is in a section under Frequency/Voltage Control

  • My mid 2007 iMac doesn't recognise 2GB RAM module in DIMM/1

I am trying to upgrade the RAM in my mid 2007 iMac from 1GB to 4GB. It originally had a 1GB module in slot DIMM/0 and nothing in slot DIMM/1. I inserted the two new 2GB modules, one in each slot but DIMM/1 just reports as being 'empty'. I have tried swapping the modules and different configurations of 1 & 2GB modules but DIMM/1 only reads the original 1GB module (from DIMM/0) and reports 'empty' when either of the two 2GB modules are installed.
I have reset PRAM, checked EFI firmware update and updated OSX to version 10.6.8 (from 10.5.8) but still the same result. The best I can get is 3GB (2GB in DIMM/0 and 1GB in DIMM/1). I am definitely pushing the modules firmly into place. Is there anything else I can try?

Your machine will accept up to 6GB of RAM however you must a) have the correct specifications, no variations at all and b) must push hard with both thumbs to fully seat the RAM. The correct RAM for your system would be the specifications shown here. I suspect 1 of three things with the RAM you bought.
    1. Wrong specifications!
    2. Incorrectly installed
    3. Defective RAM
I would STRONGLY recommend using Crucial or my preferences OWC, which is the memory shown in the link.
    BTW I have a late 2007 24" 2.8GHz iMac with 6GB of RAM.

  • How much RAM should I get my new MacBook installed with?

How much RAM should I get my new MacBook installed with? I'm planning on getting a new Macbook sometime this fall. I'll probably be a light user, mostly internet, email, and your occasional Letter/Envelope.
Are their any other options that I'll want to make sure that I get?
Oh, and this will also be my very first Mac.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

In the link Alvin Ray posted it shows the different configurations that can be used in RAM. Officially Apple states that the MacBook supports 2 GB Ram. It can hold 4 GB but only uses 3 GB. The 4 GB would only benefit the matched pair use for optimum graphics. Unless you do a lot of very graphic intensive work 3 GB should be fine.

  • How much RAM can I install in my Macbook Pro?

    I have a late 2011 model Macbook Pro. It is a 13 inch with 2.8 Ghz Intel i7 duo core processor and 4 GB (2 x 2) RAM. Can I upgrade to 16 GB (2 x 8) RAM?

Installing RAM in a 2011-2012 MacBook Pro
There is really only one way to install RAM into a 2011-2012 MacBook Pro and while there are hundreds of DIY videos online, I just like this one, found on YouTube, by “macmixing”.
Note that there is a difference in the RAM that should be used in 2011 and 2012 models.
    2011 models must use:
    •204-pin PC-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
    And 2012 models must use:
    •204-pin PC3-12800 (1600 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
    So here's the video:
Remember that the 13", 15" and 17" 2011 models (early or late) and the 13" and 15" mid-2012 non-Retina models can handle 4GB, 8GB or (unofficially, but, believe me, it works) 16GB of RAM. There are, in my opinion, only three 100% Mac-compatible vendors out there: Corsair, Crucial and OWC. I really can't recommend any other brands, even though it may work, as these are the only brands that I've personally used in quite a while. Also remember to stay away from any RAM that is a “value” brand - Macs are picky about RAM and often these value RAM modules just don’t work very well.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

changing the ram has nothing to do with the photos missing.  Did you install the ram or someone else?

  • Universal OS download for different generation Phone and Touch?

I have an iPhone 3g and 3gs as well as two Touches both different generations. They are all synched to the same Macbook Pro and I try to keep the OS's on the same release as it keeps it easier... What I would like to find is a universal download for all platforms.
Each time I connect a different device there is a new 200mb+ download. I have to assume that much of that code is duplicated. If iTunes can distinguish which device is connected, why can't it identify the right pieces of the OS to install on each device? Give me a choice to download on 400mb+(random guess on universal size) file as opposed to 4 200mb+ files...

This is the way that Apple does it.

  • 8540p dual core i7 620m 8gb ram module?

Can my Elitebook 8540p with i7 620m processor handle 2x8gb ram modules? Yes there are only the 2 slots as this is the dual core not the quad core. All literature I have read suggests it is only compatible with 4GB modules. But others have found the 8540w model spec sheet says the same thing but the specs we're written before 8gb modules we're available. And the 8gb modules worked in their systems. Is this the case with the 8540p as well? Also I have found that others have used 8gb modules in the dual core i5 models. I do realize I will need to upgrade from 32 bit Win7 to 64bit if the ram is compatible. Any insight is appreciated.

The motherboard chipset used on the first generation Intel Core processors such as the i7-620m (P55m) maxxes at 4 per slot, I thought. We started seeing 16 gig compatibility in 2 slots (8 per slot) with the 2d gen processors.  However, the Manual is cryptic: Four customer-accessible/upgradeable memory module slots supporting up to 16 GB of RAM in models that use quad-core processors Two customer-accessible/upgradeable memory module slots supporting up to 8 GB of RAM in models that use dual-core processors Supports dual-channel memory PC3-10600, 1333-MHz, DDR3 Supports the following configurations: ● 32768 (8192 × 4) ● 16684 (8192 × 2) manual Seems to be talking out of both sides of its mouth but I am pretty sure you cannot install 2 x 8 in there and have it work. If you prove me wrong (I hope you do) please report back for the good of the Forum.
