Ram on yosemite

hi all
just been thinking lots of folk have told me i should have got more ramwhen i purchased my macbook pro ret late 2013( i  have on 4gig on macbook pro ret) although i have opend, for test reasons, all the applications at the same time and the activity moniter stayed in showing in the green for ram used. will the OS in the futer be getting bigger and 4 gig no longer any use and that is the reason current macbooks are getting more ram or is it just for marketing reasons.
mike hawthorne

Whether the Os gets bigger is unrelated to how much RAM it uses.  It can weight 30GB when installed and still Manage 4GB of RAM just fine for its processes. Actual file size is irrelevant to RAM usage.
As More Apps are open and they require more RAM to keep data on hand 4GB may stop being useful, but its more about the Apps, than the actual OS.  As to how long it will be before 4GB is no longer useful, that is impossible to say.
Rule of thumb is always get as much RAM as you can afford
However, since RAM cannot be updated on a 2013 MPB w/ Retina Display the point is moot either way.

  • RAM and Yosemite

I notice that the dialogue between those for whom Yosemite is God's gift and those for whom it's installation left them underwhelmed is generating some heat!
I belong to the latter category, but as I have a mid 2007 20" iMac with 2GB of RAM updated to 4GB, I don't feel that I can complain too much.
I have taken the offered advice, removed the "eye candy" and binned apps that I had forgotten I even had, with minimal results.
I would like to pose a question or two re increasing my RAM.
I know that officially I have reached my limit in that department.
I have read where someone has exchanged a 2GB RAM module with a 4GB version, with seemingly good results.
Which slot to use was apparently found by trial and error.
Am I more likely to take a hit on my credit card  rather than gain any advantage going down that road?
    Will a 4GB module fit in a 2GB slot?
    What is likely to happen?
If there is an improvement would it make any sense to get a 2nd 4GB and hopefully bask in an 8GB glow?
I would very much appreciate some advice from anyone with thoughts on the subject.
    Thanks in advance.

I found the reference to Genieo some days back.
Downloaded the AdwareMedic. which didn't show Genieo but some adware in a Facebook file.
Deleted that, checked back etrecheck, which still showed the Genieo adware.
Followed the Apple instructions for removal of Genieo and InstallMac but I could no reference to them following the instructions.
I'll run that AdwareMedic thingy again and see what it says.
Thanks for such a fast reply!

  • Macbook Pro Black Screen (Yosemite 15" 2014)

Hey guys, I was just sitting down and opened up Skype and my macbook pro suddenly went black, just previously I had been watching stuff for a few hours on my macbook hooked up to my TV via HDMI cable. I thought to simply restart, I heard the sound chime but the screen remained black, I hooked my macbook back to the tv and everything shows up and works perfectly on the TV, i can adjust the backlit keyboard lighting, but as its through HDMI sound/brightness adjustment couldn't be done, without HDMI attempting this changes nothing, I have reset the PRAM & tried to enter safe mode which didnt seem to go into safe mode, instead staying as a black screen, i have now force shut down my laptop about 20 times with nothing working on the screen, the whole screen is black, no cursor or graphics visible, shining a light in the screen shows nothing, the apple logo behind is not lit. I have researched literally every available article on this matter that I could find but most relate somehow close to mine but with different issues such as cursor showing or external monitor not showing display, I am convinced this is something related to me pulling out the hdmi or confusing it somehow, this laptop is literally like 2 months old and I cant see how there could possibly be a hardware issue.
Thanks all for reading hope someone has an idea I haven't tried!
    Specs:
    Year: 2014
    GPU: Intel Iris Pro
    Memory: 16GB RAM
    OS: Yosemite
    Symptoms:
    Black Screen
    No Display on Macbook
    Keyboard and Keyboard lighting working
External Monitor fully working through HDMI
    Sound Chime and booting correctly

Just encountered this problem this morning. Here's the fix: (Relayed from another forum)
    1. Shut the computer down by holding the pwr button down for 10 sec.
    2. Restart the computer with a short push on the pwr button and press the shift key down at the same time until you see the progress bar start moving.
    3. Once you reach the point when your screen goes dark and you see the cursor, type the first letter of the username for your computer, then hit Enter, then type your password and hit Enter.
    4. After a moment you should see the spinning ball.
Apparently this is an issue with an uncompleted update, but instead of asking you for your details to complete the update the screen goes black, but the computer is still able to receive your inputs.

  • Macbook late 2008 with Yosemite freezing

I have a late 2008 aluminum 13-inch Macbook running OS X 10.10.1 with a 320 GB (170 of which are free) WD Scorpio Blue hard drive, Intel Core 2 Duo and 4 GB of RAM. Yosemite worked lovely for the first month, but since then my laptop started crashing every week or two, with the so-called "Spinning beachball of Death" going on for even hours. After forcing it to shut down by holding the power button, and turning it on again, it gets stuck either at either the password screen or the desktop screen, both with the spinning beachball.
After that, I have had to use my external backup hard drive to recover my internal hard drive and get it working again. I've had to use this process at least 6 or 7 times.
I've considered going back to OS X 10.9 to see if the problem is that my 6-year-old laptop cannot handle 10.10...
    Any advice?
    Thanks in advance.

  • OS Yosemite - My Apps wont "open"

Hi I'm Katrina and i'm running iMac - Late 2009
    Duo Core
    3 TB Hard drive (upgraded)
    12 GIG Ram
OS Yosemite (upgraded when it was released)
I am unable to open any of my system APPS
    App Store.
    Mail
    iMessages
    Facetime
    Calendar
    Contacts
iBooks etc etc (please see print screen with highlighted non working apps)
when I click on the Apple logo in the top left and Go to the "About this Mac" - It won't come up either.
    - anything external functions "Normally"
The other day I was going thru my iMac and deleting some my files "movies, music and duplicates" I deleted a folder in my mac that was from when Parallels was installed on here ages ago. with the "Windows" files in it.
anyway... I finished work that day. I shut down my iMac and the next day, I couldn't open up any of my system files.
    I'm stumped
if anyone has any advice on how to fix? or to advise,  I would be greatly appreciative
If I can avoid doing a clean install, would be helpful as I can't even get to back up at the moment. and to be honest... Lazy me hasn't backed up in 4 months.
Thanks for your time and your help.
    Best
    Katrina.

    Hi,
I actually googled a bit and found the best option was to do a restore of the operating system.
It sounds very daunting. But it was quite easy,
    the steps I used.
    Reboot your Mac
Hold the Command-R keys down when you hear the boot chimes
you'll see an apple logo come up. then then recovery options. - I chose to reinstall Yosemite through my internet. from memory I had to sign into iCloud (at this point there are limited options on the screen) I also had to click on the internet wifi symbol up the top right and log back into my wireless (as this is operating out of your IOS and isn't configured.
then you just go through the steps. and it begins download. at this point you just need it to do it's thing. you cannot access your mac at this point. which caused me a bit of worry as i didn't want to have to restore or build my mac up again. when it had finished. My mac restarted as it normally would and everything was as it should be and so far.. it's been fine.
    hope this helps.
    Katrina.

  • Yosemite problems on I mac mid 2007 machine

I Mac mid to late 2007 2.0 GHz Intel 2GB ram running Yosemite 10.10
About 3 months ago my sister (we are a Mac family) upgraded to Yosemite on her 2007 machine that had been running fine.  Did not know that was possible on an old machine.  Anyway she has been having noting but problems since.
    Questions:
Is problem because she only has 2GB ram?
Can we go back on her Time Machine to around August well before she loaded Yosemite and do a total restore WITHOUT losing data from August to now?
If so how do we restore her banking, schoolwork etc. between August and now?
    Thank You

Failed? That's a new one. Is that your original hard drive? I suggest you replace it. SSDs are finally affordable these days.
You also only have 4 GB RAM. Yosemite is very RAM hungry. I suggest upgrading your RAM too.

  • Type Tool CS6 Yosemite on Macbook Air

I am trying to run PSCS6 on a new macbook air i7 8G ram running Yosemite. Every time I pick the type tool it hangs and I have to force quit. All updates for PS are current. I have reset the preferences but does not seem to help. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, no menus under the tools are showing up.

Just spoke with support.... I named the "Adobe Photoshop CS6 Preferences" folder to Adobe Photoshop CS6 Preferences.old
and it worked! (my magnetic lasso was also very very slow... unusable but OK now).
    Hope this helps.
    Udit Tuli: On the desktop
Udit Tuli: click on go and then go to folder.
Udit Tuli: and type in ~/Library
Udit Tuli: and click on ok
Udit Tuli: and then look for preferences folder.
Udit Tuli: And look for Photoshop CS6 settings
Udit Tuli: Yes and rename that folder to cs6settings.old

  • Illustrator CC Freeze/crashes when taken to the second monitor. Mac OS Yosemite.

    Hello Friends.
Im having a weird problem with illustrator cc here. I hope you can give me a hand.
Im Working with two monitors on a macbook pro mid 2009 with 8g ram and Yosemite installed.
When I'm working on the main monitor the illustrator works smoothly. But when I drag any window to the second monitor it starts acting strangely.
I can select the vectors, but I can not move them. Sometimes appears a prohibited sign next to the cursor.
If I try to open a file when I'm on the second monitor, the illustrator just freezes and I can only close it forcing the closure.
Have uninstalled and installed several times and did not solve.
I have a tablet wacon. Reseted adjustments too.
This does not happen to me in CS6, on the same computer.
    Any ideas?
    Tks!

I have the exact same problem. At first I thought it was the Wacom (you should look into that too... I ended up just uninstalling mine because it was causing problems), but now I've noticed it's just when I try to work in my second monitor window. Basically I think Yosemite + Adobe CC 2014 are not a happy couple.

  • 8gb RAM upgrade for 2012 13" MacBook Pro?

I have a 2012 13" i5 2.5GHz MacBook Pro with 4GB of RAM running Yosemite. I'm considering upgrading to 8GB and was wanting to ask how much difference will it make to my computer's performance. The apps I use most are safari, iPhoto for RAW photo editing, iTunes, Xcode, Mail, Calendar and Pages. I'm also going to be using GarageBand soon. I would like to be able to use several of these programs at the same time. Would you say it is worth the upgrade?

About OS X Memory Management and Usage
Using Activity Monitor to read System Memory & determine how much RAM is used
OS X Mavericks- About Activity Monitor
Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently.  It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster.  What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent.  It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.

  • Can somebody interpret this for me? Any suggestions on how to fix it?

I have to agree with rkaufmann87 - I owned a 2007 iMac and currently own a 2009 MBP. I kept the 2007 thru Mavericks and even with the RAM upgrade to 6GB I found the computer sluggish, especially when I tried to run more than one RAM hungry program. I eventually replaced the hard drive with an SSD but that's not an upgrade for the feint of heart and frankly unless you are seriously strapped for cash it isn't one I think is worth the money. With 4GB of RAM your best choice is to revert to Mt Lion. Regardless of age and CPU, 4GB of RAM and Yosemite can only co-exist with an SSD as far as I'm concerned.

  • In "storage", it says that apps take up 290 gB. What's going on?

Hey guys, I was was recently checking my storage on my MacBook Air 13"  (not retina) and saw that the "applications" were taking up over 290 gB of storage; 296.28 gB to be exact. The computer doesn't even hold that much flash storage... What's going on? I purchased it in December. It was an open box one at Best Buy because there was a chip near the hinge. It has the traditional 4gB of RAM, OX Yosemite, with a 1.4 GHz intel core i5. I've only downloaded a couple apps, such as League of Legends, Audacity, and the Olive Tree Bible app. That's it...
I'd appreciate it if you can help!

  • Two Step Verification not working in Safari 8.0

    I'm using a 13-inch Macbook Pro Retina Late 2013 2.6 GHz i5 16GB RAM.  Yosemite 10.10 - Safari 8.0
I tried to turn on Two-Step Verification for my Apple ID using the new Safari with Yosemite, and everything worked fine until I was required to enter my Recovery ID that had been printed out (Step 3 of 4).  Every time I clicked 'Confirm', it would download a 'confirm' file to my Downloads Folder.  My only option was to use the 'Go Back' button to cancel.
However, if I used the Chrome browser, the Verification process worked without issue.
    Nate

    Hi Nate...
Might be Safari cookies, cache, or extensions.
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab.
    Click:  Remove All Website Data
No open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that didn't help, try troubleshooting extensions.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.

  • Backupd caught burning CPU

    Hello there,
after upgrading my Mid 2011 Mac Mini Server (i7, 1TB Fusion Drive, 16GB RAM) to Yosemite it cannot finish its TimeMachine backups anymore, because, according to system.log: "kernel: process backupd[xxxx] thread yyyyy caught burning CPU". This happens during the copy step.
I'm backing up to a FreeBSD server imitating a TimeCapsule, which works fine for years now and has no problems with the three other Yosemite machines in the LAN.
    Obviously I've tried the usual:
    - rebooting the Mac Mini -> doesn't help
    - rebooting the FreeBSD server -> doesn't help
    - deleting the whole TM backup and starting from scratch -> doesn't help
    - removing some big directories from the backup set -> so far, doesn't help
I'm out of ideas now... any chance I can temporarily switch off the kernel watchdog function for excessive CPU usage? I can't think of anything else that would help at the moment...
    Thanks.

I'm having this problem too--MBP early 2008, 6GB RAM, OS X 10.10.2, using Time Machine to back up to external USB drive--and it's causing the temperature to spike to 220ºF or higher, and the fans (particularly the left fan) to go absolutely, audibly nuts. I have to quit (or even force-quit) the backupd process in order for things to calm down again. (There's a backupd log generated but most of it is Greek to me.) This doesn't happen with every backup, but I'm afraid that this problem is going to cause damage to the fan or the motherboard (excessive heat) if it happens when I'm not nearby.
    Thanks,
    sandra

  • Problem Burning Long File to Blu-ray

I can't Share(Burn) long files(more than 1 hour) to an external Blu-Ray from Final Cut Pro 10.1.4.  It gets to about 85% then stops.  It will
burn short files.  I'm on an  iMac i7 with 8GB of ram running Yosemite 10.10.2. and the drive is a Pioneer BDR-XD05S.  Any advice?  Thanks!

OK, the BD render may take a while.  A number of factors seem to be involved in this.  Factors such as the speed of the machine, RAM, external vs. internal storage of the material to be rendered, speed of the burner, quality of the disc, and the source material quality are just a few.  Here are some tips that may speed up the process:
       1.  Make sure to put your FCPX library on an external drive and not the main computer (system) drive.
       2.  Make sure that no other programs are running in the background.
       3.  Make sure to use very high quality BDs for your master disc.
       4.  Check the BD drive's speed to see if it burns fast or slowly.  Sometimes slowly is better because it causes fewer data read errors.
       5.  Sometimes, you may wish to restart your computer to "clear" the RAM and other program stuff lying around (I'm sure there's a technical term for this).
       6.  Allow your burner the additional time it takes to make the burn.  I am currently burning a 3 hour program to BD.  I anticipate it will take 4 to 5 hours depending upon the "mood" of my computer.
       7.  If the "Share" function is not doing what you need, you may wish to send the project to Compressor to open up more detailed options for the render.  You will see that I posted an issue with out of sync audio on DVD & BD using the "Share" Feature from FCPX.  I was able to resolve these issues within Compressor.  BTW, I never had these issues until very recently.  Something in the software has changed - not for the better.
I hope this helps.  I'm off to my edit.
