RAM or Macbook

well, i've got around a thousand bucks to spend.
What would you do?
1. Buy 4 gigs of ram for my mac pro
OR
2. Buy a brand new Macbook
I can't decide. what would you do?

I wish I had your problem
Why do you want a Macbook when you have a MacPro. Do you travel, do you have a need for mobile computing. I happen to own both a Macbook and a MacPro. I've found that I use my Macpro 90% of the time and the MB 10%. The purpose of the MB though is to use it when I do travel, as I'm an amateur photographer and I need something to hold my pictures.
The speed difference between the two computers is large enough for you to continue to use the MP and the screen size is the same way.
If it were me, and I didn't need to travel or need mobile computing too much, I'd opt for the 4 gigs. I think the memory will give more bang for the buck then the MB.

  • Installing 8GB ram on MacBook Pro (Mid 2010)

Hi, I have bought 8GB(2*4GB) ram to install on my macbook pro, when I install both I get a black screen but when installing one or the other with one of the original ram they both work. What can I do to fix this problem??

When you install RAM, reboot your computer with the "D" key held down (or the Option-D keys). These will load the Apple Hardware Tests.
With these tests open, check the box for the extended memory test, and then start the test. This will have the system thoroughly test the RAM for errors.
In your case, it appears you may have a bad set of RAM modules, but you can check them using the method above.
When you have them paired with your original RAM, how much memory does the system report as being available when you select About This Mac in the Apple menu? If you are using Lion or Mountain Lion, then in this panel click "More Info" and then select the "Memory" section, and see what the system reports as being installed.
Is this RAM test necessay with every upgrade of memory or just if you have problems after the upgrade
    Thanks

  • 4GB RAM on MacBook Pro 15 ?

I can put 4GB Ram on MacBook Pro 15 even if Activity Monitor and other similar applications will reveal that only 3 GB of SDRAM has been addressed for use by the computer ? you see apple doc : http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304662
I would want put 4GB Ram on my new MBP.
    TY, Max Vigilante

actually it's true. it's not the motherboard, it's the intel chipset. there was an interview with a tech spokesperson from apple about this on anandtech I believe.
while you can physically put 4GB into the slots, the intel chipset will only be able to address slightly more than 3GB of it. apple made the decision to be reasonable about this and state that the max RAM for these machines is 3GB so that customers are not wasting their money on buying 4GB. other manufacturers are either not being so honest about it, or they haven't even bothered to pay any attention to the intel spec on the core 2 duo chipset. if your dell is reporting that it actually has the full 4GB (and it is indeed a core 2 duo machine) then it's just giving you a reading of what chips are installed, nothing more. any system profiling app that can really look into what amount of RAM is actually addressable will show that the full real amount is less than 3.7GB (or less than that I can't remember). the information is all there at intel if you want to go get it from the horse's mouth.
there is absolutely nothing about OSX that limits it to less than 4GB. it makes no sense to assume that.. the OSX installed on MBPs is identical to the OSX on other machines like mac pros, which can support well and truly more than 4GB RAM as there is no chipset limitation in the xeons.
anyway as I said, this info is all out there in the public domain, you can even email support at intel and ask them to explain exactly why the core 2 duo chipset (in any machine, mac or PC or otherwise) has this RAM limitation.

I would say for now that unless your a wealthy individual with more money than sense 4GB in a notebook isn't going to be a reality for awhile.

  • Will Windows 7 Pro run with 16GB of Ram in Macbook Pro Early 2011 13-inch?

Will Windows 7 Pro run with 16GB of Ram in Macbook Pro Early 2011 13-inch?, Does the brand of the Ram matter ?
I installed Crucial 16 gb and the Mac runs just fine but Windows won't start. It gets to the login screen then it turns white.

I decided to make another try today after some reading and googling the internet.
I started windows with my old 4GB memory and changed the bootconfiguration with msconfig. I typed manually in max memory tp 16384 MB and saved the settings. Then I turned it off and inserted the 16GB ram again. Then it started really but when looking at the properties of my computer it says 16 GB installed but I can only use 2,16GB. So I opened msconfig again and changed the settings once more and restarted. Now it says 16GB installed but I can use 14,2GB so I guess it is ok now for some strange reason. I suppose the lost 1,8GB is for the system ?? Do I dare to turn it off again :-) what will it say next time ?
I am so happy and greatful for all your help, I really really appreciate it and I hope my solution will come to use for someone else with same problem.
    Thank You all :-)

  • MAXIMUM RAM for MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo Mid 2010

What is the MAXIMUM RAM for MacBook Pro, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Mid 2010 - 24MC374LL/A, running OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)?
I tried to search for this but was unable to find anything.
Apple Specs say 8GB, but I was just told by someone I THINK would know, that you can actually go up to 16GB.
This would be an enormous improvement to my workflow if true.
Anyone out there know for certain?
Making sure before I buy (or NOT!)
    Thanks.

I just found this post and I realize this is a late response but maybe it will help others.
Based on recent circumstances I just happened to have two 8GB DDR3 modules collecting dust. Having an old trusty MacMini as my media center, server among other things and whatnot, I was curious if I could bump this little thing to 16GB. In doing so I found this post and verified with OWC.
    End result:
Booted with no issues, and is running nice and smooth. Should be noted that just adding 16GB of RAM to a Core 2 Duo will not make the machine lightning fast or become some amazing computing platform. It will just make the box run a bit quicker and give you the ability to have more applications open before you begin to note some lag.
However this is really nice to see:

  • Macbook (2.4GHz) with 2 GB RAM or Macbook  (2.0GHz) with 2 GB RAM

    Should I buy macbook 13 aluminum (2.4GHz) with 2GB RAM or macbook 13 aluminum (2.0GHz) with 4GB???
Any big difference btw them? I looked for some discussions abt the macbook 13 aluminum(2.0GHz) with 2 GB RAM, it seems that the macbook will run slower and got more problems with just 2RAM after a period of time.....
    Any suggestion?
    Thnaks!

Not looking at current costs and future upgrade possibilities, I'd pick 2GB of extra memory over 400Mhz CPU speed.
When running multiple applications at once, in my experience there is more need for memory as for cpu cycles.
If you take costs into account, I don't think 400Mhz and a LED under the keyboard justifies the price difference between the two. That is the main reason I got the 2.0 Ghz version.

  • Adding more than 2Gb RAM to MacBook Pro

Do you guys know of any way to put more than 2Gb RAM in an Intel 17" MacBook Pro?
    Model Name: MacBook Pro 17"
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro1,2
    Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.16 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 2 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: MBP12.0061.B03
    SMC Version: 1.5f10
I bought this when the 17" models first came out, and have been disappointed in it ever since (I broke my rule of NOT buying the first generation of something). As time has passed, the main problem is the 2Gb limit for RAM. That's NOWHERE near enough, and shame on Apple for that limitation. If there were some way, even a non-standard way, of adding more RAM, I could get reasonable performance from this computer. As it is, this has been a wasted $3600 investment. whew!
Any help or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks! Feel free to email bruce at dbsdesigngroup.com

That's possible...actually likely. I'd love for that to be the case because I could fix it. ::Grin:: It's been this way since I first got it. When it arrived with just 1 Gb RAM, it was virtually unusable. I have a few apps as startup items, but they're just Firefox, Entourage, iNotepad, Linotype Font Explorer (with very few fonts activated), and Stickies. That shouldn't affect things much.
My needs are to use Photoshop, Illustrator and GoLive at the same time, with MSWord, Firefox and Entourage open as well. After the first bit of usage, I end up with 4-6 pageouts and a VERY slow computer. While it's doing the pageouts (which take quite a while), or switching between apps, it's very slow. And it's also extremly slow when Spotlight is indexing, so I disabled that.
I'm just not sure what it might be...nothing in Activity Monitor seems like it would be a culprit. Even in Safe Mode the problem is very evident.
I'll keep exploring and hopefully find something that will make this machine more viable for my use. I really appreciate the input greatly.

  • Adding more RAM to MacBook Pro Help!

    Dear Apple Support Community,
Ok so first of all don't tell me to go search for older discussions >:(
    Here are my system specs:
    MacBook Pro 15", Mid 2010
    Processor - 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory    - 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics   - NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB
    Software   - OS X 10.8.5 Mountain Lion
I was going to buy some extra RAM and boost up my computer to about 16 GB total because my computer is running a bit sluggish lately when I'm running several apps at once (such as pages, keynote, chrome, steam, itunes...) but now that I've seen a few videos online and some reviews on amazon, I'm not completely sure which RAM is the one that will not screw up my computer. I saw a video on 'UnboxTherapy's Channel' where he said something about the timing of the RAM which is in the format like 9-9-9-24 or something, as well as some review saying something about the computer not working at all thanks to the RAM because the computers didn't match..
Please help me find a 16GB RAM that will work on my computer (please try and keep the websites amazon if possible, I live in japan :/)
and please explain to me what the RAM timings mean and how to figure out my timing...
    Thank you for reading

    Hi leroy,
    Thanks for the quick reply!
I checked the Crucial site, and apparently my Macbook Pro can only upgrade until 8GB...
Is there any way to upgrade to 16GB without any trouble?
Also, if I upgrade to 8GB, will I see any difference? Some users say that you won't see much change between 4GB and 8GB of RAM... Is this true?
    Thanks!

  • Upgrading ram in Macbook pro 2 Model 8,3

I want to upgrade the RAM in my Early 2011 macbook Pro. I already purchased it. I bought CORSAIR 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600). When I go to Apple's site to see how to install it says I can't put more than 8GB in this machine.I went to Corsair's site and plugged in the model etc. this memory came up as being compatible.  I'm very confused. The Apple specs say this model supports up to 8GB. Does that mean in each slot or total. I will loose $ if I have to return these, but I don't want to harm my computer.

    Glad I could help.

  • RAM in MacBook Pro i7?

I'm a very happy iPad user considering getting my first Mac -- and have pretty much settled on the 2.66Ghz Core i7 MacBook Pro. My biggest question concerns the RAM installed in the machine. I'd like to max it out to 8 gigs, and want to know how much I'll have to buy. Is there an empty slot available, so I can just drop in a 4 gig module? Or are they both full, so I'll have to buy two new modules?
Also, how easy is it to install the new RAM myself? I'm pretty handy with PCs and PC laptops, and have installed drives, memory, video cards, etc. Will I find this just as easy, or is it brain surgery? Thanks!

    Arthur,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
If you want to max it out to 8 GB you would need to replace the memory that is in the machine and no you cannot order one without any RAM in it. You would need to order 2 x 4 GB sticks, my recommendation would be to buy them from OWC. They extremely reliable and concentrate on Apple products. Here is the link to the correct RAM.
If you choose to not use OWC any 2 x 4 GB sticks that meet Apples specifications will be fine. You will find the specifications in the manual which you can download here.
    Regards,
    Roger

  • Install ram in macbook pro

    Hi,
I have a problem with my macbook pro when I replace the ram. I can not open the memory door. A screw does not look good and I can not unscrew it. So how can I sovle that problem.

    Ha Ta,
Stripped screws are always a challenge. This is what I would try. Get a screwdriver that is as large as possible but still fits in the slot. Put a tremendous amount of force straight down and try to unscrew while force is applied. If that doesn't work try a flat head screw driver. If you strip it all the way out, it's okay. Continue to do so until a torx willjust barely fit down in the hole and remove it. If you can get it unscrewed a little, you can put a flat head screw driver under the head of the screw and pry up to give you a little friction to remove the screw. However, the screws that hold the memory access door down are very short, so that shouldn't be necessary. As always if you don't feel comfortable doing this, then seek help from someone who is trained and certified. An apple certified center should be able to replace the screw for you.
    Thanks and Good Luck,
    David
