RAM or Riser Card

I have a Mac Pro 1,1 and have been experiencing some RAM problems.  First, I had RAM sticks fail on the entire top riser card. I replaced all of it and have been fine up until now. Now, when I start up my machine, one pair of 2 GB sticks will register as 1 GB each. But if I restart, this sometimes goes away and the full capacity comes back to 2 GB each. How can I figure out if this is a Riser Card problem or a RAM issue? It's hard to believe the new RAM I just recieved a few months ago already went bad!
Thanks.

Sometimes new RAM instantly fails.
Sometimes your computer case is too warm
Sometimes running SmcFancontrol 2.3+ @ 900 rpm as new default works to get more air flow
These are you are sure Mac Pro certified DIMMs.
Contact the seller.
Don't continue to use RAM that is 'sometimes' that is not ever normal (I have seen people with EVGA SR2 though that have RAM not show up but they are also playing with voltage and timing and experimenting more).

  • Early Mac Pro does not recognise ram in Riser A

System information shows that I have only 8Gb of ram installed when it should show 14Gb, there appears to be no ram installed on Riser A even though I have 6 GB of ram on the card. Assuming that the issue was the card on which the ram was installed I swopped the card from Riser B which has the 8Gb on and put it in Riser A and the 6Gb in Riser B. System Information now shows that only 6Gb is installed so I think it can be assumed that the cards and the ram chips are OK.  So is this a hardware or software issue?
I recently had to replace the Grphics Card as the old one died could this have resulted in some damage to the motherboard.

What graphic card? you had 7300GT and put an ATI 5770 in and connected the power cable w/o trouble?
No, had some power issues, computer would randomly shut down to begin with but after a full SMC reset the ATI 5770 has been fine.
The top slot for a Riser then, even after replacing with a new one?
And where did you buy the new Riser?
Have not replaced either of the risers?
Ram is a mix of Crucial and Kingston and was all working prior to Graphics Card being replaced.
OK! So I have run a Hardware test which shows I have all 14Gb of Ram physically installed in the appropriate risers but only 8Gb is shown to be actually working. Thats the 8Gb installed on the card in Riser B.  Can anyone explain that?

  • Bad Riser Card = send to shop?

    Hey everyone,
I'm the (otherwise very happy) owner of a 2007 8-Core Mac Pro getting ECC errors from a specific DIMM on what I believe to be a bad riser card. I gave away the stock 1 GB RAM and am using 4x2GB sticks from TransIntl.com and installed on my machine since Day 1
When I spoke to someone at AppleCare, they told me that I had to send my machine in to an Apple Store (or Apple Authorized Service Center) since the riser card, at least according to the info she had in front of her, isn't a user-replaceable part. This was tough for me to believe, but I didn't want to argue unnecessarily.
So my question is: does Apple really not send replacement riser cards out to users? On a PowerMac G4 years ago, I was sent a replacement SuperDrive when mine went bad. I'd consider a riser card - especially on the beautifully designed Mac Pros - to be eminently easier to replace, so this doesn't make sense to me.
Since this is the first time I'm posting about this issue here on Apple Discussions: yes, I'm fairly certain my riser card is bad. I've done all the tests for this - swapped the RAM modules, swapped the riser cards between slots - and the same DIMM on the same card reports ECC errors after awhile (my machine is on 24/7).
Curious to hear experiences or opinions...

Once you replace the RAM yourself, you expose yourself to the possibility that the warranty won't be honored if you damage something in the process. Read the RAM installation instructions for your model in the Do-It-Yourself page of Apple's support website. All the disclaimers are there. If you sold the DIMM, unfortunately you have further eliminated any chance of discovering if the problem was the Transintl module or the riser card, unless you try yet another RAM card that is new from a renowned vendor. You are better off letting an authorized service center do the installation, because that way, they can document it for Apple that it was done by them. Regardless of what Apple says here, this is a user to user forum, and we can't really discuss policy. You'd best just take it up with Apple if you find two highly renouned vendors aren't able to give you a working RAM card in your machine*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/badram.html
And in the future, never sell elements you replace yourself until you are certain the replacement part works.

  • RAM and graphics card problem?

Hi, I recently purchased an Macbook pro that has already been bootcamped with windows 7 ultimate. My issue is that the windows partition is only recognising 2 GB of my installed 8GB of RAM, the windows 7 operating system is only 32bit so I know I will only get a maximum of 4GB but why is it only reognising 2GB?
Another problem is that the windows side is using the incorrect graphics card, in this macbook there are the GT9600 and 9400 from nvidia, is there anyway to change which graphics card windows uses?
any help would be greatly appreciated!

Use the new RAM. The stuff from Amazon is nice and using all the same set IS best policy.
New on A1:2 and whatever else in B1:2
4 or 8 DIMMs is what you want to use. There is small higher latency using 6 or 8.
For best performance on Mac Pro, install memory in risers symmetrically
The Mac Pro comes with two memory riser cards, each with four DIMM slots. With a total of eight slots, you can add up to 16 GB of memory.
Note: DIMMs must be installed in pairs of equal size from the same vendor. For instance, you must not have one or three DIMMs on either riser at any time. Additionally, two DIMMs from different vendors should not be combined and used as a pair.
Other configurations of DIMM pairs are still compatible with Final Cut Studio, but may not achieve the same performance levels as when DIMM pairs are installed on both risers evenly.
    Riser A contains:
    Riser B contains:

    2 x 512MB
    2 x 1GB
    2 x 1GB
    2 x 2GB

  • Please recommend a right-angled PCI-e 16x riser card/cable for a Media Live

The IGP in my Media Live is not running properly, or nVidia's drivers for it are just crap (more likely, I guess), so I need to fit a dedicated video card.  The riser fitted for the supplied Hauppage WinTV card is for a PCI slot...  I have Aero turned off, which ameliorates teh problem but some windows/applications still don't render properly.
I am having trouble finding a suitable riser card for a PCI-e 16x slot though.  The main problem is that the 16x slot is not directly underneath the mounting points for the riser card, which means I need a riser with a flexible cable.  Secondly it needs to be right angled and thirdly the slot needs to lie lower than the mounting holes.  Most every riser card I've seen has the slot level with or above the mounting holes, however this would not work in the Media Live case.
In a pinch, I guess I could live with a PCI graphics card... but are there ANY modern PCI graphics cards????
So is there a recommended riser card I should use, or am I stuck?

CPU in and running fine.  No issues so far, although I haven't run it under load yet.
My Titan heatsink was a tricky fit, the heatpipes are literally touching the RAM heatsinks (though not pressing against them) and the holes in the motherboard were on the large side.  Installation instructions were ok but parts bags mislabled!  And the supplied thermal  paste was horrible...  still, it really is a low profile heatsink and one rated to 130Ws - unlike just about every other one out there!    The fan I fitted is a Scythe Gentle Typhoon 92mm unit and is really quiet!  I hadn't realised just how noisy the original machine was, but with the Typhoon and the Silverstone PSU fitted it is genuinely quiet.   Lastly, unlike the GT64 fitted before, it's fins go sideways, not front/backwards, and that means air coming off the heatsink will now go over the heatsink on the NB...
Speaking of which, I discovered the NB heatsink was rather loosely fitted.  I'm going to score an aftermarket one with a bigger sink and *maybe* a fan and fit that soon.  With proper thermal paste.
Lastly, since they were mentioned as a potential problem, I took a pic of what I think are the VRMs?
If I'm right, I can readily fit a heatsink to those if it would help.
With 8GBs of RAM and a 600GB Velociraptor coming, I am going to do a new windows build soon with 64bit Ultimate.  After that, all I have to do is source a slot-load BR drive and the upgrades will be done.  Modding the case will be another job...

  • K8D Master-FT PCI / Riser Card Help

Ok, I have just taking my first venture into the true server class motherboard.  We chose the K8D Master-FT w/ a pair of opteron 240's.  I have ran into a few issues that I just can't seem to find any answers on.
    1.  We used a third-party case which didn't come with a riser card.  Do I need a PCI-X riser card or can I still use a 32bit riser.  Also once I have the correct riser card can I still use 32bit PCI devices on the riser?
    2.  Next if I only want to use one slot can I just use the PCI-X slot on the motherboard without a riser?  If so can I use a 32bit PCI card?
    Thanks a bunch in advance.

Ok.  Here are the details.  We get the system board in and we grab a rack case with the correct form factor.  Problem is the case didn't come with a riser card.  None the less we where under the same impression that we could stick a PCI or PCI-X card in the slot.  We only have a single card (RAID controller) which we intend to use.  When we insert the PCI (32-bit) raid card in the PCI-X slot the system won't boot.  We even tried inserting the card every which way we could in the slot thinking maybe we had inserted it wrong.  Still no luck.  Should our raid controller be 64 bit?  Also we did have some riser cards that came with some ATX form factor rack cases, but when inserted into the PCI-X slot, the card slots face oddly up the motherboard towards the I/O panel.  Thanks.

  • K7N420 pro MSI 6952 TV-Out Riser Card troubles

just wondering if anyone has gotten the MSI 6952 TV-Out Riser Card to go with their K7N420 pro motherboard and if so how do you get it to work as ive tried for months on end and i still have many failed attempts at getting it to function

It is your drivers. You need to get the 29.XX series of detonator drivers and use those to get tv-out to function.
I had a K7N420 and a tv-out card... long dead, exploded caps. I recall that the last version of the detonators that worked for sure was the 29.20s. I experience the same difficulty with my geforce3 Ti500 and the new drivers... no tv-out signal as the drivers cannot seem to detect the presence of a tv on the other end of the svideo cable.
Try it out and see if it works

  • Help hooking up MSI 6 channel audio-output riser card and DTT2500

    Hi guys,
I'm having trouble here. I originally had my SBLive hooked up to my DTT2500 speakers (yeah I know, overpriced POS) through a 2.5mm-->DIN(9pin) jack. The SBLive has a 2.5mm spdif out on it. Now I swapped to an Nforce board and I'm using the onboard MCP audio. I used the CNR riser card (picture below) thinking this would be an easy switch. But unfortunately things don't go that well for me. Turns out that the SPDIF on the Riser is an RCA spdif out, not 2.5mm. So, my question is, how do I hook up:
    SPDIF RCA OUT----->2.5mm
    .....or.................
    SPDIF RCA OUT----->9pin Digital DIN
Any ideas??? The SPDIF is the bottom jack of the 3 in the picture below, right????

I'm gonna try this again while our friend here shows an illustration and I can elaborate. Sorry to crash this thread but I see an opportunity here, and someone else may benefit from it as well.
I too gave up and switched to the SB live becuase I like sound coming out of all 4 speakers of my Altec lansing 4.1 analog system.
    1. Does this mean that I can switch back and use the jack on the CNR card for the rear speaker connector since I have only two plugs from my AL's.
    2. Do I now have control over the 4 speakers or is it the same as before where you can only hear sound out of four speakers when it is encoded for it?
    3. finally, (see illustration) the wire loop/connector that connects the CNR card to the MB, shows it is connected at the header behind the SPDIF Jack (it comes that way).
    A. Do I need to leave it there or move it to the header behind one of the other jacks for ANALOG???? or will it work the way it is?
I tried bringing this up in the old forum in my early days but it seems it was overlooked. I moved on and got my SB LIVE...yeah I know, but I just can't do without 4 speaker sound, not just a mirror image for the rear.
I don't want to have to shell out another 200 beans for a new speaker system...yet
So does anyone have any experience relating to the questions I have asked? ?(  ?(  ?(

  • Mac Pro 1,1 two different riser card.

When I got my Mac 1,1 Pro used, it only came with one riser card. Now I recently bought another riser card from ebay, but it is a different color (the original was light blue and the new one is indigo). Everything does work, but I was just wondering did apple use two different riser cards, because they are the same model and both were built in 2006 by Apple. Also this won't cause any optimization issue, Right? This maybe a small thing but hey, can't be too cautious. Anyway, Thanks For Your Help.

  • Do i have a bad batch of ram or a bad riser card?

I recently took my mac pro 3.1 up to 16 gigs of ram in 8 2gb dimms. I had the dimm in riser b slot go bad and I replaced it. It took a few days to get a new dimm so took the dimm out slot 4 and put it into slot 2 and removed dimm 3 as well so that i had 12 gb to work with. When I put the replace ment dimm and the dimm out of slot 3 back in the dimm in slot 2 gave me a red LED. I moved it to slot 4 to try reseeting it but it still shows bad in slot 4. do you think I got a bad batch of ram or that my riser is killing the ram that I have? I dont want to have to keep replacing the tam if my mac is killing the ram.

I have a hard time following
DIMMs are always treated in pairs, and returned as such, no one replaces a single DIMM.
8 x 2GB with 4 on each Riser is fine.
You should have returned both A3 and A4 (you don't metion which Riser so I'll just use A).
There should be method to madness.
Try one set at a time. Or half. Or all on one Riser
Try swapping Riser A and B.
Apple Hardware Test is of help with Risers and 'mechanical' errors. To test software based errors.
Having a DIMM or set show as HALF their rated capacity is also a common problem with FBDIMMs, which should always be kept cool as possible and monitored, including increase of the system fans by 300-400 rpm.
As I said, Crucial, MacSales, Ramjet, Trans, they all want you to return the matching sets.
I don't think your Risers are killing your RAM. but maybe choice and handling and vendor.
