RAM or what?

Hi everyone!
I got an ibook G4, 1.33 GHz, 256 MB built-in RAM and 60 GB HD. In general, it's slower than it used to when I bought it, however, with certain applications it runs even slower than "normal". I still have 10 GB free in the HD. Should I increase the RAM to 1GB? or what other possible factors might be causing this problem? Thank you in advance

Hi! Your biggest problem is ram. Increase the ram to 1gig or more if possible and think about a bigger drive or freeing up older stuff you don't need. At 10 gig free your getting close to the free space minimum of 10-15% but ram is where your problem is and it's much easier to change than the hard drive. Tom

    What is the problem exactly???
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...

Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?

Just got girlfriend a new iPad2. Her iMac is a PowerPC G5 (Tiger version 10.4.11) with 512 mb RAM. What's the simplest, most efficient way to get her iPad2 up and running and synced to her Mac?

Most of the Apple store sales people and some of the genius bar people are only knowledgable on Apple's more recent offerings. They are not very knowledgable, I found, on older PowerPC based Apple computers, I'm afraid.
    Here's the real scoop.
Your girlfriend's G5 can only install up to OS X 10.5 Leopard. This is the last compatible OS X version for PowerPC users.
OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and OS X10.7 Lion are for newer Intel CPU Apple computers.
Early iMac G5's can only have up to 2 GBs of RAM.
Later iMac G5's (2005-2006) could take up to 2.5 GBs of RAM
2 GBs of RAM will run OS X 10.5 Leopard just fine.
The very latest iTunes (10.5.2) can be installed and runs on both PowerPC and Intel CPU Macs.
However, there are certain new iTunes feature that won't work without an Intel Mac.
One of iOS and iTunes feature is sync'g wirelessly over WiFi.
This will not work unless you have an iDevice running iOS 5 and Intel Mac running 10.6 Snow Leopard or better.
Although, I was disappointed I would not be able to do this with my G4 Mac, it's not a biggie problem for me.
So, your girlfriend's computer should be fine for what she intends to use it for.
The Apple people either just plain didn't know or we're trying to get you to think about buying a new Mac.
At least, as of now, not truly necessary.
If Apple, at some later point, drops support for PowerPC users running 10.5, then would be the time to consider a new or "newer" Intel CPU Mac.
My planned Mac computer upgrade is seeking out a " newer" last version G5 for my "new" Mac.
I can't afford, right now, to replace all of my core PowerPC software with Intel versions, so I need to stick with the older PowerPC Macs for the time being. The last of the G5's is what I seek.

  • OS X Mavericks using SWAP with 16GB of physical RAM? What gives?

Okay. Can someone help me understand why OS X Mavericks is using SWAP and Memory compression when I have 16GB of Physical Memory installed? I'm also only running Safari, Mail.app, Colloquy IRC and iTunes. That's usually the only programs I have open unless I'm playing a game or something. Also, when I reboot, the RAM is back to normal, but after my Macbook Pro has been on a couple of days (I usually have it plugged into the wall), it starts use SWAP in Activity Monitor and Memory Compression. Here's a picture I took before I rebooted, and I will always post my system wide information in case anyone has any ideas on how to keep my computer from using Swap in OS X Mavericks:

    Those are all fine
Here is how to see RAM overloaded…
Reboot to see the system in it's default state.
Open TextEdit for the sake of it
Open Activity Monitor & Terminal from /Applications/Utilities.
    Select the Memory tab
In Terminal enter the following command
    memory_pressure -l critical
    # note that is a lowercase L
RAM usage will climb, compression will begin the VM will become way more than the system has installed.
Eventually the system will start swapping  (look for RED) - Watch the 'memory pressure' & 'Swap used' as this happens.
Try switching to TextEdit - the system is still coping !
Switch back to Terminal & hit ctrl+c to stop the process.
Watch the VM & memory pressure return to normal levels.
    This OS kicks 4ss !
    Your problems may lie elsewhere

  • How much RAM, and what CPU do I need for Adobe InDesign ?

    hi guys....
each series of Adobe products, I notice that the products get heavy and more heavy than the previous one, so let's talk about the CS2 of Adobe products ( where I first dealt with Photoshop and InDesign) they were good as for the system requirements and the boot time, then the CS3 came out, and I then noticed that the prorammes, and especially InDesign, I noticed that it takes more time to load when I launch the programme, while it's running smoothly when using it , and 1 or 2 years later , the CS4 came out which was really noticeable that its heavier than its predecessor set, and now I am using InDesign CS5 ME on a trial basis, and I really can't describe how heavy it's, it's really tough on my PC to deal with, the loading takes more than what InDesign used to take in its previous versions, but now it's not only the loading time that's longer , but it's also heavy in real-time usage, so I mean that noticed a big difference between it and its previous versions, that when I place a material for example, I really notice a sluggish movement even when drawing some frames for example, or adjusting some photos, though my PC is not that old, and here are the specifications of it:
    motherboard : P5KP-C/1600
    CPU: 3GHz, 6 MB, 1333 FSB, Core2 Duo (E8400) overclocked to 3.2 GHz.
    RAM: 4 GB DDR2 @ 800 FSB (2x2).
    GPU: Nvidia 8500GT 1GB DDR2.
    HDD: 500GB @ 7200 RPM, 16 MB buffer.
    OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64.
so as you see... it's still powerful, but I would to ask whether InDesign needs more RAM ? of it will even avail the extra amount of RAM that I may though in my PC ?? or all the matter that the programme is coded for SSDs ? and don't tell me that I need a quad-core CPU .
though I have just bought a (boxed ) Core i7 860, but I still need some time to finish the upgrade process, and this is due to the finance crisis I undergo by now.
so do you think InDesign can make use of more than 4 GB of RAM ?
    thank you guys.

    WaaaaaW you are amazing...
I tried to set it to "never" but this yielded with no difference, then I tried to set it to "delayed" and it yielded with resolving the issue, but there is still a slowdown till the article get spread accordingly with its frame, so I do confess that moving frames and drawing/pulling their sides are now flawless, but spreading the article to its frame requires about a second to respond, that it doesn't interact to the mouse immediatly.
so I really thank appreciate it for you, and thanks for the helpful answer .
but I am curious to know what was that option you mentioned all about which changed the scenario ???
    - by the way... feel free to explain in English, since I do like English, and even my computer is set to English as the starting language, including all my programmes, and application, you may laugh if I tell you that I feel like being lost if I work on a computer which is Arabic language, though its may native language, but I just got used to English since it's the language that I learnt computer with.
    all the best.

  • How To Install New RAM - tell what I've got

All: I've installed RAM on my Desktops over the years but never on a Laptop. I purchased my MBP with 1GB RAM but now that I need to run Parallels for school classes it appears from all the threads I've read here that Parallels needs at least 1.5GB RAM to run OK and more to set it on fire.
Q1: How difficult is it to install RAM on a MBP?
Q2: I don't know how many chips are in there now but from what I have read it appears that putting in 'Pairs' of RAM versus just getting one 1GB RAM chip (to add to my existing configuration whatever that is) is the preferred method. Comments? Suggestions?
Q3: A local Mac Store wants $35 to install the RAM (not including the price of purchasing the RAM) is that the prevailing rate or should I shop around further?

    Huffer wrote:
This is the source of information about your laptop: the Service Manual: Download Manual here Unfortunately if you look on page 19 you see that Celeron models have their own type of motherboard which means you could only install a different Celeron processor. You could theoretically buy one of the i3/i5 motherboards and install it but that would mean a new motherboard and processor. The cost will approach a new laptop price.  How much memory do you have? Your model was a WalMart Black Friday special a few years back and came with 2 gigs. Increase it to 8 or at least 4. 4 would be cheap as all you would have to do is add a 2 gig module.  Here is the part number for a 4 gig module: 4 GB 621569-001 Here is the 2 gig on amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/Upgrade-100-6100ix-PC3-10600-1333MHz-PARTS-QUICK/dp/B00FDV69CE/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1437999207&sr=8-6&keywords=621565-001 Then save that money you want to spend on the motherboard and processor and just buy a solid state drive. You can get a 250 gig solid state drive for under $100 now. Install it and do a clean reinstall of Windows onto it and you will think you have installed an i5 processor and 8 gigs of RAM. Makes everything pop open, boots way, way faster, etc. The solid state drive is the same physical configuration as a hard drive and is a drop-in replacement. http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-2-5-Inch-Internal-MZ-75E250B-AM/dp/B00OAJ412U/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1437999378&sr=1-1&keywords=Samsung+850+Evo Pages 45 and 46 of the Manual show memory upgrade and hard drive removal and reinstallation. • Added Ram, now what?

    Okay,
I've recently added 1Gig of RAM... by taking out the keyboard.... the works, but I still feel as if there's more to this than just plugging it into the slot.. What must be done now that I've added the RAM as far as getting the computer to recognize that it's there? -if anything?
Thanks for any help and suggestions.

    Thanks for your response.
okay, well, I wasn't sure how to tell, but I opened system profiler, and it shows the RAM there but doesn't show it as active or something like that... I don't recall exactly what the term was that was displayed next to it...
If all else fails, I guess the simplest thing to do is take it out and go through the install process again.

I believe those would be Real Audio files. You'd need the Real Player from real.com

  • RAM install: what bank/DIMM order + size order?

    Hi all,
My iMac 10,1 (late 2009) factory RAM (2+2) came installed in slots Bank 0 DIMM 1 and Bank 1 DIMM 1 (which slots System Profiler show as being consecutive at the bottom of the memory description panel). Now I'm adding 4+4, should I follow the same pattern, using Bank 0 DIMM 0 and Bank 1 DIMM 0? I ask because it somehow seems more logical to me that you'd populate any given bank with the same size RAM.
    ALSO
Does it matter in what order the 2GB modules are vs the 4GB modules, is there a "larger/smaller comes first" hierarchy in populating the slots?
    thanks in advance,
    - Dan

Follow the side by side matching and it's fine to use the open slots for the new RAM. You don't have to put the larger ones in the upper slot (depending on what you call upper!).

Just wondering if anyone else is experiencing slow rendering (playing) of .MKV files on their MacBook Pro. And what to do?
I have Perian, but Im not convinced QT or Front Row can play .MKV files.
What do you recommend? What software for mac that can handle .MKV files good?
    CoreAVC?
    -Joey

It could be a 'difficult' form of Matroska file. FYI Matroska is just a container like MOV or AVI, and some mkv have the video encoded with Real Video Codec (RV9 RV10). Perian+QT can't decode this, but VLC will play .mkv files just fine on OS X, as long as they don't use H.264!
It's a bit of a lottery until Matroska decide to properly support the Apple platform. I have found this:
    http://mkv4mac.free.fr/index.php?lang=en&p=lec
    which may help.
But there may be another workaround: 1. Get Info the mkv file
    2. Change to extension to wmv. Save as wmv and that could work better.
