RAM PERCENTAGE ISSUE

i just upgraded from 1gb of ram to 4gb on my imac. it use to say using 13% of 1gb when i would launch AE now with the upgrade it says using 4% of 3gb, i don't get it. why would it use less when it has more? and why is it only recognizing 3gb instead of 4gb? please any information will help out a lot i need to get AE working a little more fluently then it is now...just takes too much time for previews and to work period.

As stated in multiple postings over time: RAM usage is allocated dynamically. You will see peaks when AE needs more RAM, but not before. Simple as that. And 3GB on OSX is normal for an 32bit app, which also has been discussed endlessly before. Do a search on this forum for more detailed answers.

  • RAM Preview issue

    Hi,
I'm wondering if anyone has seen this or can provide some direction for further investigation. This is on a new Mac Pro on which I have just installed FCS
In some projects the RAM preview has no effect on playback performance. After generating a RAM preview, the project will play at the same speed (say 2 fps) and as soon as I pause playing, the green progress bar that indicates project is loaded in RAM disappears or becomes fragmented - without modifying the project in any way. When this happens it also becomes nearly impossible to do additional editing as every simple task (as simple as resetting the play range) can result in the spinning beachball. There was a recent thread on RAM preview issues (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12215113&#12215113) but it appears the problem there was due to a long HDV project. The projects I experience this on generally have a lot of particles or replicated elements, but are standard 720 x 486 resolution projects lasting less than 10 sec. System memory usage is relatively small, less than 4 GB.
These issues arise on a recently purchased MacPro (3.33 GHz 6-Core, 16 GB RAM, ATI 5870). The boot disc is an OWC SSD, and user folders, scratch, etc are on separate hard drives. I installed the operating system on the SSD using the installation disc, and have manually installed all my programs from their original discs. (I initially used migration assistant to bring over applications, but that failed with some applications, so I wiped clean and started over). There have also been some past threads on how different hardware configurations can affect performance, but I don't seem to be doing anything abnormal here.
    What I have done:
    Tested ram using memtestosx
Verified memory usage through activity monitor. The projects I have tested on use up less than 4 GB of system memory
Before each test or comparison I reset preferences.
I do not have this flakey behavior with an older MBP (17" 2.93 GHz Core 2 MBP with NVIDIA 9600) running the same OS (10.6.4) and motion version (4.0.3). Running the same project on the MBP will take longer for the RAM preview to complete, but when it does, the project plays at full frame rate.
The upgrade to a MacPro was mainly for other CPU and RAM intensive applications unrelated to video or graphics, but I expected motion to show a nice performance boost over the MBP on this new machine. Anyhow, any insight or direction for further investigation that I should pursue will be appreciated.
    Thanks.

I tried your project (nice, BTW), and yes, 20,000+ particles take some time to render. However, when I did a RAM Preview, I had no problems - after render it played at full speed.
    UNTIL...
I selected the emitter. Then playback went to the pre-RAM-Preview speeds. As soon as I turned off overlays or made sure the emitter was not selected, the playback instantly sped back up to full speed. I believe this is because Motion needs to image the constantly changing outline of the emitter. This means it needs to be re-drawn every frame after Motion determines the extent/size of the 20,000 particles on their random journey.
I think this is backed up by the fact that near the end of your project, there are only a few particles to keep track of and the playback appropriately speeds up. Also, CPU usage vastly increases when I turn on the overlays.
Moral of the story? To ensure the quickest possible playback, turn off overlays (⌘/) or ensure that something like a particle emitter is not selected during playback.

Hi, We are running domino application in windows server 2008r2 standard virtual machine, we are facing High RAM utilization issue, but there is no such process are running. Machine is running in ESXI host, most of the time it shows high RAM utilization.
We upgraded the ram from 6 to 8 GB, but still facing the issue,
Where as other  VMs working fine.
Need a help to find out the issue.

    Hi Sathish sampath,
You can use Resource monitor and Task Manager->Performance to monitor the RAM memory utilization, I also recommend you to download the
RAMMap to get more detailed memory information.

  • RAM previewing issue

    Hi,
I'm working in After Effects CS4, and I'm having a problem when I try to RAM preview short sections of an animation project. The RAM preview keeps stopping before it reaches the end of the work area, and beginning again. I'm pretty new to the program, but I've also noticed the little green bars that, I believe, tell you if the section has rendered/processed always have little gaps in them. That may be related. I don't know.
Does anyone know what may be causing this RAM previewing issue?
On a side note, I'm using After Effects on a Macbook (not a Macbook Pro), and I'm wondering whether this problem may be due to the Macbook not being sufficient for After Effects and CS4 in general. (I had originally intended to install the program on my 2004-era G5 tower, but it wouldn't install After Effects CS4 because apparently the program won't work with PowerPC processors, only Intel ones. At least that's what I was told.) Anyway, I've wondered whether the RAM previewing issue may be due to the Macbook not being enough computer for After Effects/CS4. My Macbook has a 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 and 106 GB of available space.
Any insights on the RAM previewing issue and whether my Macbook isn't a suitable computer for these programs would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks a lot,
    Neil

From the theoretical specs there is nothing that speaks against your notebook. Apparently the biggest hurdle for some users is to get it to run in the first place, but now that it runs, it's safe to say that you will be able to use it properly. Of course, to let truth have its way, you will become slightly peeved at a point and get that yearning for a new machine, when you use more functions and your projects become more complex. Especially the only 2GB RAM will then often become a show stopper and you will really hate Adobe when one of those dreaded "Could not creat X x Y buffer" or similar out of memory warnings pop up. Still, no need to rush. Take your time and see, if AE is even everything you thought it would be and then make clear, structured plans for getting a new computer. You wouldn't wanna spend another 2000 bucks on a spiffy machine just to run AE once a month.

  • Ram utilisation issue

Please people's fix the ram utilisation issue what is the purpose of 2/gb ram on lenovo a7000 when the phone itself costume 1000 mb ram everytime.
Phone is slow and lag all the time.

SQL Server does not release RAM unless the OS issues a memory trim
    because it is running low.
Just to clear a bit Windows OS never issues memory trim it just sets Low Memory Notification flag ON when there is Low notification. SQLOS has component QueryMemoryResourceNotification which monitors this flag. If it sees flag ON  SQLOS will respond
by sweeping its caches internally to reduce the process working set, and release memory back to Windows.
Again if OS feels a great memory pressure then memory allocated Via VirtualAlloc() function will be paged but if SQL Server service account has LPIM this cannot be paged out.

  • The 2 Gig Ram Question/Issue

So MSI tested this board and rated it to support 2 Gigs of RAM but the biggest stick tested was 512.  That means that the most you could hope for would be 3X512 and that ain't 2 GIGs.  Here is the MIS link to memory modules you may want to reference:
    http://www.msicomputer.com/msiforms/k8tneo_ddr400_recommended.asp
Here is the exchange I had with the OFFICIAL tech support guy at Corsaire:
    Quote
    I have these two:
    http://www.newegg.com/app/Showimage.asp?image=20-145-431-05.jpg/20-145-431-03.JPG
I have 3 memory slots (2 currently occupied), but I can only have 4 banks total of memory to stay at 400 mHz FSB. I want to add this stick to take me to a gig of RAM:
    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-145-475&depa=0
This would then occupy my 3rd slot giving me over a Gig of RAM. This is my setup:
K8T Neo FIS2R Bios 1.7 (made by MSI)
    Athlon 64 bit 3400
    2 X 256 Corsaire XMS PC3200LL
    Slots 1 & 3 (timings: 2-3-2-6) [2.7 V]
    Antec Tru Power 550
    Windows XP Pro
    *added*
    I have ver. 1.1 I believe.
also, I can run 4 banks and still have 400 FSB. I am pretty sure that the sticks I have now are only 2 banks total. So the stick I want to buy CANNOT be more than 2 banks but should be safe.
MIS and my board have major issues with Corsaire. Many are told to steer clear, but I already own two sticks and they were expensive and I will be damned if I have to go with something else. Here's my rig:
    K8T Neo FIS2R Bios 1.7
    Athlon 64 bit 3400
    2 X 256 Corsaire XMS PC3200LL (Twinx)
    Slots 1 & 3 (timings: 2-3-2-6) [2.7 V]
this is exactly what my RAM sticks say:
    CMX256A-3200LL
    XMS3205v1.1
    0308120
    Quote
You would need to match the module exactly to what you have now only CMX512-3200LL Rev 1.1 The Pro version will not work in this MB with the modules you have now! Sorry! The other choice would be to find another use the memory you now have and just get a Twinx1024-3200LLPro instead!
Look, I just want 2 Gigs or 1.5 gigs of RAM and I want to run it at CAS 2 like I am running right now.  The KingMax RAM is CAS 3!  Other than Kingmax and Apacer (the Crucial 512 stick is not at Newegg) the other RAM ain't available from Newegg, so where am I supposed to get this RAM from.  And the Apacer is CAS 3 too!!!!!

really, it's 6 banks?1 damn.  I'll have to scrap that. and yet 2 one GIG sticks are still only 4 banks??
aside from what the poster right below you has, what do you think about these two sticks:

  • 24" iMac and 3GB RAM limit issues

I have a legitimate concern with the 24" iMac and wanted to know if anyone else thinks it's an issue. Read Apple's tech note on late model 2006 iMacs including the new 24" model.
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/HardwareDrivers/Conceptual/HWTechRAM/Articles/RAM_implementation.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40003899-DontLinkElem entID5
In order to use RAM in an interleaved fashion it states you must use matched pairs. Meaning same size and type. SO.....if the new iMacs will take a 2GB SO-DIMM then why won't it register 4GB total? You can configure your new iMac with 3GB of RAM but it won't be interleaved. On top of that 2GB SO-DIMMs are super expensive in the +$700 range. More then MacPro's FB-DIMMs.
I don't see anyone talking about this but it seems to be a legitimate concern.

That IS the point, what person paying $2000 for a computer would be willing to pay another $1500 for a 4GB RAM upgrade? I just think right now it's hurting Apple's sales of the 24". The 24" encroaches on the prosumer market and at this point in time an affordable 2GB of RAM may seem adequate now but most likely not in 6 years. Which is how long I had my Digital Audio Power Mac. So I think anyone in the prosumer market NOW, like myself, looking for a machine that will last a few years may look away from the 24" and steer toward the Mac Pros. My needs fall squarely in between the 24" iMac and Mac Pros but unfortunately my budget does not. I could live with the 24" even with the expensive cost of the 2GB SODIMMs. I would in fact wait until the prices fell. What I can't live with is the fact that the iMac will only ever be able to use an uninterleaved 3GB when the possibility of an interleaved 4GB seems to be there. I was only able to keep the Digital Audio because I squeezed every ounce of life I could out of it because of various periodic upgrades.
Reluctantly I'm going with the Mac Pro but I REALLY wanted to get the 24" iMac. Thats all.

  • Early 2008 24" imac ram upgrade issues

Hi everyone.  Hope you guys can help diagnose a problem I have with my imac.
It's an early 2008 24" imac with 3.06 Ghz processor and an NVIDIA Geforce 8800 GS 512 graphics card.
After buying Empire: Total War I thought it best to upgrade the 2GB RAM to 4GB, and purchased 2x2GB sticks 800 Mhz 6400 DDR2 SDRAM.
When they arrived I put them in and the system booted up normally.  I could surf the net ok, but when it came to watching a video on youtube full screen, or playing a game, it would cope for 30secs-1min and then the spinning coloured wheel would show.  I'd then hear noises that sound like a cd trying to eject then the system would hang.  One of three things would then happen:
    - it would automatically reboot showing the multi-lingual startup message that the system was not shut down properly
    - a grey blank screen would appear and not change
    - the grey start up screen would appear with the Apple logo and spinning circle, which would then stop spinning and not change.
If I manually rebooted I just get a black screen and can only hear the fans softly spinning.
I've tried swapping the ram sticks but get the same as above.  It will boot and work normally with either one of the 2GB ram sticks installed on it's own.  It will also work normally with the original 2x1GB sticks installed again.
I don't get the 3 beep warning at startup.
Any thoughts on why this might be happening?  Would the graphics card be the reason for this issue?
I'm not sure if these are related but a few weeks ago I noticed that the brightness would randomly change from normal to half-brightness then back to normal.  These would change every few minutes or so and isn't dependent on what programmes I have running.
I've also recently noticed that the top and back of the imac is getting quite warm to the touch and no don't leave the system running when not in use.

    Hello,
Have you blown the dust out lately?
Get Temperature Monitor to see if it's heat related...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/12381/temperature-monitor
    iStat Menus...
    http://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/
    And/or iStat Pro...
    http://www.islayer.com/apps/istatpro/
EDIT: you won't find iStat Pro at BDAqua's link any longer. (No longer supported by the developer, and not completely compatible with Mountain Lion, but most of its features should still be working.) It's here
    https://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/istatpro.html
Do you have a link to the exact RAM you bought?
That grapics card is known to be a problem, but the brightness issue seems more like the Backlight or Inverter.

  • 24" iMac (Primo 2009) strange RAM upgrade issue

I have a 24" iMac (Primo 2009) at work. I been granted a RAM upgrade by the IT department and have received 2 indentical 4 GB modules.
The 24" iMac (Primo 2009) uses 1066 MHz DDR3 modules and supports up to 8 GB RAM in 2 slots. I have purchased RAM from this source http://www.dustin.dk/product/5010642132/corsair-4gb-ddr3-1066mhz-1x4gb-so-dimm-i mac-macbook-macpro/#intcmp=searchProvider_SiteSeeker (Corsair Mac Memory so they SHOULD be fine.)
    Here's the issue:
I had 2x 2GB modules. I have taken both out.
I have inserted the new 2x 4GB modules but the machine refuses to boot. It gives off 3 beeps-interval-3 beeps-interval (repeats).
I took out one of the 4GB modules from slot B. It boots.
I inserted the one I removed in slot B again so we're back at 8GB. same beeps. No boot.
I switched the 2 4GB modules from slot A+B around. Now beep-interval-beep-interval (repeats) No boot.
I inserted one 4 GB in slot 1, and one of the old 2 GB in slot 2. It boots with 6GB RAM.
I inerted only the one that won't boot when in slot B in slot A, beep-interval-beep-interval (repeats) No boot.
OK - so logical deduction tells me one of the new 4GB RAM modules is defective. No matter what configuration, booting fails with that specific module inserted, though there are different beeps. I also know tha both slots work since the machine works with 6 GB RAM (2+4).
So I called Dustin, and since we're a big customer they sent a new moduel for free. But, I have the same isssue with the new module!! What are the chances I have recived 1 working and 2 defective modules? not big right? So my iMac seems fine with the old 2GB modules and one of the new 4 GB modules, but says no to the 2 other 4GB modules.
YES - I have tried resetting PRAM and SMC to no avail. Any clue?

Switched the 2 modules around, so there's now a 2GB in slot A and a 4 GB in slot B. Still works fine

  • Ram Preview Issue with Yosemite

Hi, I have updated to OS X Yosemite, I am using AE 13.1.1.3, and now I am having an issue with RAM-Preview that makes working with AE problematic: When I start the Preview by hitting "0" on the Numpad the Ram Preview starts, but I am not able to stop it anymore until it has rendered to the end of the work area.
It is also strange that I am able to move keyframes while it renders.
The Shift-Ram Preview is also affected by this bug.

There is a known bug with Yosemite and the RAM preview, but your issue sounds different. Anyway, see the known issues here: After Effects good to go with Mac OSX v10.10 (Yosemite)

  • Quicksilver (2002) ram memory issues

    Morning all
Recently I upgrade from a Quicksilver (2001) 733 MHz PowerPC G4 with 1.5 MB of Memory to a newer & faster Quicksilver (2002) Dual 1GB PowerPC G4 512 MB of Memory and have found a few issues between the two...
I had through that I would be able to transfer my existing memory from one to the other... not so!
Can some one tell me why?
    Rick aka therepguy

    Hi John!
Just got back from vacation from 80 to 85 degree Ft. Meyers Beach!
I was not trying to say resetting the PRAM is the same as resetting the PMU.
The following article from a Mac magazine suggests resetting the NRAM may help with this issue. I originally said to the original poster to reset the PMU but then thought some people are daunted by that task.
"If your Mac happily goes to sleep but won't wake up--Hold down the power switch to force-reboot your machine and get it running again.
Don't worry-your Mac isn't narcoleptic. Its Open Firmware system or NVRAM (nonvolatile RAM) is likely corrupt, and your Mac can't remember how to wake up.
Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Command-Option-O-F key combo until you see a somewhat intimidating command-line display that ends with the Open Fimware prompt. Type the following line:
    reset-nvram
press the return key on your keyboard
    set-defaults
    press return
    reset-all
    press return
Your Mac will reboot. Once it's running, put it back to sleep to test. If the problem recurs your Energy Saver preferences may be the culprit. Delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file (go to Finder/Hard drive/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration)--don't worry, your Mac will regenerate a new one--and then restart to see if that rights the wrong.
Still didn't work? Might be time to call AppleCare or see an Apple Genius or a technician."
Anyway, I thought someone would bring up your point, but I was to lazy that day to address it!
    Happy computing!

  • [resolved] RAM detected issue in EEEPC 1215b

    Hi, guys
I recently bought a new asus epc 1215b netbook,  i'm satisfied with its low price and new APU architecture, equiped with a E450 processor +  HD 6320 graphic card + 2G DDR3 RAM.
But when i run  'free -M',  arch tell me the total  memory is 1610Mib, this really suprise and confuse me. I suspect whether this is a memory hardware issue or motherboard issue. After change to another 2G ram, this result is the same. So, the original ram has no isssue.
Hope someone here can kindly tell me if this is a feather in AMD apu architecture, I mean some memory is reserved for gma card(oh ,godness, I think myshef funny when say this and never come to this situation befor especially  I always use Intel onboard graphic card, the memory is shared and should be displayed fully in  free -m command's outputs ) or really some issue in motherboard(or memory cotroler within CPU?)?
The best is if someone also use the box of the same model could tell me the result in your endpoint.
    Highly apreciate for your help.

When bios slash, it displays 2048M memory installed, and then, grub will report about 1680 memory available.
I hear some others who owned this laptop as well also report the same situation, so I guess this probabaly caused by some memory is reserved and  dedicate to GPU.  But extremly hope someone could share your free -m to me in order to clarify this issue.
    Thanks.

    Hello -
I have been researching this issue all day.  I have seen a variety of posts but no solution for me yet.
I am using AE 5.5.  I get the following error when trying to Preview.
"RAM preview needs 2 or more frames to playback"
I am working on a Mac and I have tried it on the Mac laptop and Mac desktop.  Both systems have enough RAM to handle After Effects.
Any guidance is very much appreciated!!

HI, I'm experiencing this problem as well, but it only starts after I add audio.
My composition is quite simple at the moment, I just need this snippet of audio to create a simple animation...
I'm able to listen to the audio with ram preview in the Viewer, but once I add it to the composition, I get the error.
I then have to proceed to re-start AE because once I remove the audio from the comp, the same error will come up again (until restarted).

Your statement "Looks like VO2 is not being attached to the adv table in PFR?" holds the key to your issue.
Are you trying to attach the VO in PFR? Only a selected properties can be modified for beans in PFR. Put your code in processRequest and it should work.

Ever since I upgraded to CC 2014(from CC) I have been experiencing an issue. My RAM preview will start somewhere in the middle of my in/out points. I have to wait for it to loop to see the beginning. I have tried checking/unchecking "from current time," I have tried cycling through the playback options, and I have tried clearing my cache. Nothing seems to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
