RAM Preview at half res = crash ?

Hi there,
I have been having a problem with AE where it will crash on a RAM Preview . . . . but here's the weird thing, it only happens when the resolution of my composition is set to 'Half' ?
It's becoming a real pain, previewing at 'Full' res is too much for this particular project (too slow) and 'Quarter' is simply too blocky to make good judgements about what it is I am looking at, so 'Half' res is pretty much ideal, but like I say when doing a RAM Preview the thing renders a load of frames then AE collapses with the following error dialogue appearing (see image below).
This is not fixed to one AE project, it is happening on the three I am currently working on - I am on a i7 quad core iMac with 8GB ram and After Effects CS4 . . . .
Anyone come accross this (or similar) before, and importantly anyone know how to get around it ?
Cheers for any help,
Lee.

Cheers for the input Mylenium.
I will try it with OpenGL switched off and see what happens . . . .
Also the resolution is non standard (1280 x 540 pixels) - but as you can see it is still divisible by 2 - but I will try your idea of changing the comp size as well - I will probably just make it letter boxed in 720 and see what happens.
Thanks once more, I will report back . . . . !
Lee.

  • AE CS4, Kona 3 and Half Res RAM Preview.

    Hi,
I am having a very annoying problem trying to RAM preview in AE CS4  at half res/50% and below.
    My system configuration is
    MacPro 2008, 16GB RAM, 8800GT.
I am running AE 9.02 on 10.5.7 and am not using the AJA CS4  utilities as they create some problems on my workstation,  AJA Kona3  driver v7.1
I am outputting and HD SDI signal to HD SDI monitor, with the AE  preference video preview selected on AJAKona 1080i25 RGBA. (Full HD comp  of course) While at Full/100% everything is working in Realtime and I  have my full HD preview running on my monitor, as soon as I choose to  preview in Half Res and 50% size, everything runs at 6-8 fps.  IT IS  IMPOSSIBLE TO WORK LIKE THIS! and is very frustrating.
In a comp which is standard PAL all works fine in Full/Half/Quarter  etc...
My AJA control panel output1 is set to 1080i and the secondary  output to 625i and is connected to an SD monitor in order to have both  HD and SD monitoring but this should not be a problem....
I am desperately looking for a solution for that and any help will  be appreciated.
ThanX in advance and happy holiday season to all.
    jm.

Cool, I tried that as well and it worked.
Then I remembered that I had had to stretch things out originally because when I imported them they played at double speed. So I bumped my preview playback from 29.97fps to 15fps and un-stretched them. Then I created the preview and the preview played right, and also the RAM save copy played right. So that was it. I just had to change my preview speed and render speed to 15fps, which is apparently the speed of the video from my input device.
    Thanks a million!

  • After Effects Crashing on timeline Scrub & RAM preview

    I'm relatively new to AE.
    I'm working on an iMac (Late 2009, 2.66 GHz Intel Core i5, 12GB 1067 MHz DDR3, ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB, OSX 10.8.4)
For the past two weeks, immediately following the successful completion of two small projects, AE CS5 began to FREEZE my entire computer (No error codes or beach balls of death) requiring a hard re-start.  So after attemping vaious 'fixes' found here & across the internet (closing OpneGl, unistalling & reinstalling, etc.), I took my computer to apple looking for answers.  After showing them the issue, they ran EVERY diagnostic they had & my computer came back ALL CLEAR!  It's even running better!  So I upgraded to CC & the problem continues.  I've EXCLUSIVELY used Adobe products (Ps, Fl, Ai, & ID) for the past 10+ yrs and have been sold till this AE issue.  I'm beginning to DESPAIR!  I've seen this concern referred as far back as CS3 & am praying that someone can help me ASAP as I've just received a Big contract TOTALLY dependent upon AE. I don't know if there's software conflicts somewhere due to an update (remember, it WAS working & I completed my first two projects with NO ISSUE AT ALL!)
    Please HEEEEELLLLLPPP!

Again thanx for the reply.  Please Bear with me as I'm REALLY trying to get this up and going again
    Ok, I've uninstalled:
Perian- tried AE-crashed when I scrubbed & RAM previewed
    DivX-tried AE-crash when I RAM previewed
    Skype-tried AE-crash when I RAM Previewed & scrubbed timeline
Wondershare-tried AE crash when I RAM previewed & scrubbed timeline
The only video apps I have now are VLC, QuickTime (which I can't unistall apparently), & Final Cut Pro-X, & AE CS5.  Any further instructions would be so GREATLY APPRECIATED!! I've just landed a HUGE contract with the local HighSchool dist as well as a job with a certain high-profile shoe company THAT IS TOTALLY DEPENDENT on my ability to use AE!!!

  • Why is RAM preview crashing my After Effects CC 2014?

    Using Windows 7 x64
    After Effects CC 2014
I'm getting numerous crashes when using the RAM Preview.
Until my current project started getting more complicated all was good - no crashes. As I've added more assets to it, it's become very unstable.
When I click the RAM Preview button it'll either crash immediately, or succeed. If it actually starts, it's fine. But more often than not it just crashes the whole program immediately.
    How do I solve this?
Is there a checklist I can use to check for possible issues?

Right, right. Vague info I know, but I was hoping for a checklist of common culprits I could eliminate one by one. Very new to the world of video.
    I'm running:
    Windows 7 x64
    Intel i7-3770K CPU @ 3.5GHz
    32GB RAM
    GeForce GTX 780
Doing a 720p project, but using mainly 1080p footage.
Video files used are .MP4 and .MTS format.
Using various effects. Mostly simple stuff.
Plenty of sound effects and music as well. All .WAV format. No MP3's (I heard AE hates MP3 format).
I don't get any crash info. The entire program freezes until I kill it manually.

  • Adobe After Effects RAM preview crash

    My computer specs:
Processor: AMD9(Quadcore) A8-5600k APU with Radeon HD Graphics 3.60 Ghz
    Memory: 8.00 GB (7.40 Usable)
64 bit OS and AAE CS6 is 64 as well.
(I also updated my graphics card driver to Catalyst 12.8 and it still crashes.
Can someone help me solve this problem with it crashing?

Are you saying that After Effects closes when you RAM preview? Does it pop up an error message? How far into a RAM preview? How are you initiating this RAM preview? What kind of footage are you using? What effects are in your comp? Does this happen in every project? Has it worked before without crashing? What EXACT OS are you using? What is your EXACT version number of After Effects (11.0.2?) What are your memory and multiprocessing settings?

  • AE CC 2014.2 crashes after RAM preview.

    Hey,
It crashes almost every time after RAM preview. I think it gives an error, but it's buggy and i can't see it correctly. The error box, the timeline, effects tab etc goes completely black. Can't close the program from anywhere else, only from task manager. And what's even more weird - it doesn't let me do a print screen of the crashed UI. What is there to be done?
Can't imagine it's because of the computer. I've got 32gb of RAM, 4gb graphic card with CUDA, i7. 2-3 months old, works perfect with other programs. Any thoughts?
    Thanks in advance!

Does it do it when your RAM preview with just a solid in your project, and nothing else?

  • After Effects CC crash when RAM preview

    Hello,
I have project im working for 2 weeks. It was all good till yesterday. Today I opened and tried to Ram preview it, but either it crash and close or if I click the space bar to watch in the midle of ram preview it opens a warning window, with nothing inside (see attach) and I can not close it or do anything else.
    Im running a Windows 8 in a IntelCore i7 4770 3.4GHz 3.4GHz, RAM installed 16GB - Video - NVIDIA GFORCE GTX 660
I just can not work this way, I need to finish this program and I can not find a good explanation for this crashes.
    Thank you.
    Edit: insert attachment

    Hello Mylenium,
First I apologise for my poor english, see it is not my native language.
Now, I have tried that and it didn´t do me any good.
I have backups, however Im not sure if "save incrementally" means the same thing.
Plus, I have managed to RAM preview going by parts, however I don´t feel like that must be the only way to do it.
    Thank you,
    Eduardo

  • Premiere (CS3) crashes everytime on RAM preview

    hello all,
i am having a problem with a project i am working on in premiere pro CS3.  Everytime i go to do a RAM preview, the dialog box comes up and says "Rendering 1 of 8 Audio Previews" and gets stuck there and eventually freezes up.  I've noticed if I take the video clip i want to render into a new sequence and do it, it works fine.  however whenever i go to export my clip as a qt, or wmv, using media encoder, i get the "serious error has ocurred" and then my project crashes for good.
any thoughts on how to rectify this?  thanks

thanks, i'll try that, i should post a couple of things i have tried already that have not worked:
    - i've started a new project, imported that one in, but still the same problem
    - i created a new trimmed project, therefore creating new medial files based on what has been edited thus far, and still get the same problem.
i do believe it does have something to do with the audio, because when i bring just the video into a new sequence and render it, it works fine.

  • AE crashes when I RAM preview, gives this message

Has anyone ever seen this type of error message? If so, how do I fix it?
    I'm running CS5 on a mac. Thanks.
Update: I made another file with a solid moving from one corner to the next and it RAM previewed without error. Figured I'd throw that out there.

Oh wow, ok here we go.
Running Version 10.0.2.4 on a dual booted Mac (using the Mac side)
    OS - OS X v 10.6.8
    2 x 2.26 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon - 16 GB RAM 1066 MHz DDR3
The file wouldn't even open when I switched to the PC side which has vista I think, but I'm not positive.
Had Photoshop CS5 open, have 3rd party plugins and codecs installed but aside from Particular 2 I'm not using any in the area I'm trying to preview.
Not using multi processing or render multiple frames. Using a 2048 X 1152 size (this was comped then scaled down to 1920 x 1080) quicktime at 23.976 for just under 36 seconds with an Animation codec.
Was ram previewing the area I wanted, earlier in the day. It all of a sudden just started crashing when I tried previewing at all in this file. Went back to the last version I saved last night and it ram previewed fine.
I checked for updates in Help - Updates and it said it was completely updated.
Sorry about not including this earlier.
    Thanks!

  • RAM preview crash when Time Remapping applied

    Dear All,
I've recently upgraded from CS6 to CC 2014. Unfortunately I'm experiencing a strange problem and I couldn't find an answer yet.
Whenever I Time Remap a footage (Canon 7D, H.264, MOV, straight out from the camera) and try to RAM Preview, AE crashes.
There is nothing in the Comp, no effects, only 1 video with just the Time Remapping applied.
    My system is:
    Mac OS 10.8.5
    3.4 Ghz
    32Gb RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2048 MB
    After Effects CC 13.2
Any thoughts and help are much appreciated!
    Many thanks,
    Laszlo

    Hi Rick,
Thank you for your reply. I don't really want to transcode the footage because it takes time and I never had to do that in order to edit it in AE.
I did a test with the same footage, same settings etc. on my laptop which is on Mavericks and it did work. So I'm thinking it must be the combination of Mountain Lion and After Effects 13.2. Very strange.
Probably time to upgrade the OS.
    Thanks again for your time!
    All the best,
    Laszlo

  • Crashing when doing ram previews or exporting 7.0.1

    AE 7.0.1
Windows XP SP2, 3 gigs of ram, 2.21 Ghz AMD processor (acer aspire), All-In-Wonder 2006 PCI Express card, 256 megs video memory, ATI X1300 base
The last 2GB of ram is new, just installed. Nothing else is crashing like this, though.
NOT running Open GL (but the same thing happens when I DO run OpenGL.)
It crashes about 1/5 of the time when doing ram previews IMMEDIATELY on trying to do them, and it crashes about 1/5 of the way through my export. I mean, AE is pretty damned useless if I can't export. I could almost sorta kinda live without the ram previews, but not really even then.

I found the problem... Nero... See, I didn't even realize Nero launched when I launched my computer, and I thought I had deleted it, as it was just a trial and I never bought the full version... I uninstalled Nero and put after effects through its paces, no more problems.

  • Multiprocessing works for RAM preview, extremely slow and aeselflink crashes when in Render Queue

    Hello all,
    System specs:
    Hackintosh
    OSX 10.9
    3.5Ghz (overclocked to 4.2Ghz) Core i7
Geforce GTX 580 classified 3GB Cuda GPU
AMD Radeon HD 6870 1GB Display GPU
    32 GB of RAM
    System SSD
    5 drive internal RAID
    After Effects CC 12.2.1.5
    Cuda drivers up to date
I'm having a problem with the render queue and multiprocessing. I have a moderate sequence with several effects and 3D layers. When I'm working in the composition, everything goes great. I can RAM preview and all my CPU cores will kick up to 100% and render the composition in no time all; with full resolution with no skipped frames. It works fantastically.
Then when I go to render the exact same composition with the same multiprocessing settings, AE will hang at the "initializing background processes" for at least 5-10 minutes, during which the CPU will ramp up to 100% but no frames will be rendered. AE still remains responsive, as I can hit the stop or pause buttons and the queue will be cancled. But then the aeselflink processes (up to 8 of them depending on my settings, I've tried several) will still continue at 100% cpu load even with AE not set to render anything. I will have to go into the activity monitor and force quit each process. If I leave it for 5-10 minutes, it will finally stop initalizing and start the render, but the CPU will still run at 100% but the frames will crawl slowly forward at about 1 frame per minute, with an estimated 28 hours to render frames that were rendering in under a minute during RAM preview.
I have tried both reducing the number of cores AE will use, adjusting the allocated RAM, and disabling multiprocessing alltogether. When I disable multiprocessing, the render slows to a complete crawl, and it will render around 1 frame every 5-10 seconds. Again, this is on a composition that rendered in less than a minute on full resolution with RAM preview.
The only way to get this composition to render is to export it to Media Encoder, which will render it (without multicore processing, unfortunately) in about 8 minutes, still not the blazing fast RAM preview but at least it finishes it in under 3.5 hours (the amount of time that the multiprocessing disabled render in AE will take).
Here's the multiprocessing settings that have been very stable and carried me through other projects. Disk Cache is not enabled. The only other thing that is disabled is the "Disable Layer Cache" under the Secret menu as the plugins I'm using (Plexus 2 in this case) doesn't like to update when the camera moves so this option has been disabled to force it to reset each frame.
Does anyone know what is going on?
Also, please don't tell me that I should not use multiprocessing or instruct me on basic steps as to increase preformance on my machine. I have been tweaking my memory and multiprocessing settings for a long time now, and it is completely stable in everything but this setup. So please no answers saying "just don't use multiprocessing". It was made for a reason, it's effective, and it's needed. And please don't say that it's the hackintosh, either, as it's the most stable and powerful computer I've ever used. Sorry for the disclaimers, I just want to have constructive help.
Thank you in advance for your ideas!

Hi Rick, not sure if you saw the part where I said please don't reply with turning off Multiprocessing, and I did not say that it works and is effective in all areas. However, if you actally take the time to read my post, you will definately notice that RAM preview with multiprocessing takes under a minute to render a scene. Multiprocessing disabled and rendered in AE takes 3.5 hours. In Media Encoder it takes around 8 minutes. Clearly it IS working and IS effective for my case and my rig. Any vendettas against MP does not help my situation at all.

  • After Effects CS5 crash on RAM Preview OS X

Hello Friends. I've had a pretty great experience with AE CS5 so far, but I've been getting more and more recurring issues of AE locking up the entire computer on occasional RAM Previews. I get a spinning wheel, and the computer becomes unusable. I can usually change open applications with the keyboard, but they do not respond. In moments even that stops working and have a beach ball of death. Unable to force quit in any way, wether through menus, contextual menus, or keyboard commands. It takes a hard shutdown with the power button to get out.
The only thing I can find that *may* also be a connection is that I normally always save right before a RAM preview. Though it doesn't happen every time, could it be that I'm freaking out the app before it can fully write the changes to the saved file? Each time it happens, I do have a sense that I'm working too quickly and am waiting for it to catch up.
Not sure if anyone else has experienced it. Just wanted to let people know I've run into it more than a few times.

Thanks for the reply. I've been getting fewer problems by simply pacing myself before I RAM preview, but they have not entirely gone away. Here are my settings as of now.
Footage layers are hand drawn scans animated in 3-D space, but all on the same z plane (virtual animation stand - Reference Still Below). Very few effects. A lot of blending modes.

  • After Effects CS5 crashing during RAM Preview

After Effects CS5 was working just fine less than 24 hrs ago.
Now I cant even get it to RAM preview some text moving across the screen as a test.
It keeps getting hung up on "Background Process Status Loading Projects..."
Never an issue before. Didnt update or change ANYTHING.
Of course this happens right in the middle of a job...nice....
    Utterly frustrated.
    Mac OS 10.7.5
2 X 3 Dual Core Intel Xeon (one of the earlier Mac Pro Intel towers)
    19GB RAM
ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB

    Funny you said that.
That is what i thought the problem might be. I am going to archive some stuff on my hard drive.
That is when the app started having issues. When the project started getting larger and having more elements.
In fact, now i am getting a weird wobble when I render a sequence from premiere. If I only render part of it, it doesnt happen.
Maybe I need to free up some space on my hard drive...?
