RAM preview is not beeing cached – sometimes

Hi,
I read through the Adobe recommondations for multiprocessing, I hope I did not miss a crucial point, but here's my problem:
When multiprocessing for RAM preview is activated, it renders the required frames and plays them as expected. Also the area in the timeline appears green as expected. But in the moment I click somewhere, the part of the timeline goes gray again. When I want to see that part again, I have to start the render for that part all over again – it feels like it was not cached at all. When MP is deactivated, it works as expected – but unfornutaley, my comps benefit a lot from MP and the render goes a lot faster so its really slowing me down to deactivate it. Parts that are cached without MP stay in cache when they are in a part that I re-render with MP later. Then just the new MP rendered parts dissappear.
Because this behavior just started at some point my opinion was that its kind of a bug. I purged all memory and cache. I uninstalled AE with this clean uninstall tool from Adobe and reinstalled.
It just happens in some complex comps. So I thought, it might be some option or something that prevents AE from caching mit MP. In one composition, I just have one comp with time remap. When I made a new comp and copy'n'pasted the keyframes, it worked in that manually cloned comp.
Disabling disk cache does not seem to have any influence on the problem.
It's strange and hard to reproduce and I was not really able to boil down the conditions where it happens for sure. Any hint what might be the problem would be very appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Timur
My system configuration is the following:
MacBook Pro i7 2.3 GHz, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD, nVidia GeForce GT 650M
Mac OS 10.8.4
After Effects CC – 12.0.0.404

Thanks for that reply! Any thanks for the insights in your workflow, I am always curios how people master that stuff. Its just that in the project I am working in the moment I notice a dramatic increased performance using MP and was kind of dissappointed when it just stopped working at some point. I was hoping to save time in the bottom line solving the whatever problem this is (too late now, still I want to have it solved). It bothers me that it's not working and just feels wrong how it behaves...
Now to the specific problem:
Well, first I thought "cpu's used for other applications: 0" would not have that much effects, since its just using 3 CPU anyway because of ram limitations. But ok, changed it to 4 and the memory per CPU to 1, so its using four CPU's; an even number, did not change anything.
I do not use any plugins . Or let's say: not that I know. I use AE of the box and freshly (2 weeks ago) installed.
Yes, MP turned off is the way I am working right now but I did not really consider this a resolution. I am also aware of the fact that MP is not faster in all scenarios, but is in mine now. And yes, I also read that MP causes problem sometimes, but I rarely read about unsolvable ones. Why support it in the first place if it would be so? I wouldnt understand if there are usefull features implemented in expensive software my company payed for that are broken, thats all . Or, if there's a bug I would like to help to solve it so it gets more usable.
Again, thanks in advance for further help, looking forward to find the solution!

  • After effects cs6 ram preview saying NOT REAL TIME

Every time I try to ram preview something in AE CS6 at 59.94 fps it always previews it at only 11 fps and it says Note: zoom is not 33.3% I have my Composition settings to 59.94 fps and the quality to quarter but nothing helps? Im using 6GB of Ram and have 2 of my 4 CPU's used for it.. is there something I'm missing?

Without proper system info, comp settings, details about your footage etc. nobody can say anything. you are merely throwing us random fragments of info but leaving out the important parts.

  • After Effects will not RAM Preview in real time

Recently I have started working on a new project and can't work on it because my RAM Previews are not in real time anymore. I have only had this problem since I started this project a few days ago. Every other project I have done I've never had this problem before.
I have 10 GB of ram allocated to After Effects, my clips are in 59.94 fps which I have set the composition to as well. When I ram preview it tells me 50.019/59.94 I know what this mean, I understand it's telling me to change my composition's frame rate to 50 frames, however if I do this then music plays too slow. Right now my problem is that the clips aren't playing fast enough for me to see if my editing and time syncing is acurate. When I render the video everything is synced up fine but this is making my editing very inconvenient and I would like a fix please. I tried: Clearing my disk and media cache, unchecking "render multiple frames at once", taking off all effects on the clips, using different clips, AND even reinstalling After Effects CS6 but nothing has worked. I really badly need a fix to this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks!!

    > The clips are in 59.94 frames, so the composition is in 59.94 frames. If when I upload to the internet it goes down in frame rate so be it.
You are misunderstanding the typical video workflow.
Composition setting are supposed to match the characteristics of the intended output, not necessarily the characteristics of the imported footage. This is how you ensure that what you preview exactly matches what you output and what your viewers will see. Consider, also, that most compositions use assets with many different frame rates, sizes, etc.
    > I do have a large monitor but I've been using this monitor since December and haven't had a problem with it until now.
Great. But you're having a problem now. And it's because of a bottleneck somewhere between your RAM and drawing the pixels to the screen. One more reason that this might be happening is that you're running a GPU-heavy application; note that web browsers can also be GPU hogs these days.

  • AE CC 2014.1.1 the plague of "ram preview needs 2 or more frames"

As i said abot Premiere CC 2014.1, for me AE CC 2014.1.1 is the worst version of this sw ever on my system. Specs:
    i7980x
    GTX680 4GB
    24GB ram
    Asus P6T deluxe mobo
2 SSD Intel, one for AE cache
I'm experiencing continuos crash from AE. I'm on a big project, as always, and performance is terrible. After a bit of time of working AE became terribly slow. The "blu" bar under the preview window start load again and again. I move the mouse, loading, i scroll the window, loading, press caps lock to stop the preview....loading. This is the sympthon. After this kind of wierd performance i know that my ram preview will not start again. The infamous message will pop up and doesn't matters what i do, purge, format ram or whatever. the only way is to close AE and reopen it.
Now...i'm using AI files or PSD files, so i've to run AE and Photoshop or AI all toghether....after some minutes...the bar loading, the performance slows down and the message pop up again.
The ridicoulous fact is that when i render the project i have the ram usage at 19% and cpu usage at max 60%. So my renders are really long (about 10hr for 2 minutes of animations), but my system is sitting there doing nothing. Really odd...i can use 12GB of ram and half of the cores at this point, doesn't matter for AE performance...

Right! It's got a little bit worse... After the 'RAM preview needs 2 or more frames' window I purged then restarted and all was back on track for about 5 minutes, then it happened again and then the following series of warnings have locked AE in a cycle of warnings...
Below is the series of warnings I've just received followed by my memory and cache settings and then the memory left on my computer.
    then
    my memory settings
    my cache settings
and the memory left on my computer
The file is 'just' a series of After Effects solids with masks (about 40), rigged together with Duik IK (not the puppet tool thing just the one that links layers together) and some wavs for the sound file.
Like I say I've probably done hours of lipsyncing over the last 15 years with far far heavier files (using HD footage and a far bigger comp with psd files) and I certainly haven't had this kind of persistent problem and it's only since I installed CC2014 last week...

  • Color Space Ram Preview

Yet another problem seems to have arisen with the new CC 2014.
When I try to do a RAM Preview even of a small section at lower rez the RAM Preview will not play back in real time and the audio is way off.
I get a note saying that "Color Work Space is on"  which indeed it is.  If I go into Project settings and switch Color Workspace to "None" my RAM Previews play perfectly.
In previous versions of AE including CC this was never an issue.  Playbacks were fine even with a Colorspace and Linear workspace chosen.
Has anyone else had this problem?  Is there a solution other than having to manually turn off my Color Workspace every time I want to do a quick RAM Preview?
    Thanks
    TAK

Takasaurus, can you be more specific about the RAM preview playback speeds you're getting with Display Color Management enabled?
For example, on my MacBook Pro, RAM previewing a 23.976 5K R3D comp at 32bpc in full resolution with color management enabled, in either After Effects CC 2014 (13.0) or After Effects CC (12.2.1), I get the following results:
Display Color Management enabled, Color Management Quality set to Faster or More Accurate Except for RAM Preview (same meaning in this context): ~11fps
Display Color Management enabled, Color Management Quality set to More Accurate: ~5fps
Display Color Management disabled: 23.976fps (real-time)
Under the hood, when Display Color Management is enabled After Effects does an additional color transform of every frame at the time it is displayed. These frames are not cached, the transform happens live at display time. (Note that you can enabled or disable Display Color Management without affecting the state of the comp's image cache; ie., the green bar in the Timeline panel.) This live transformation of the comp is what is impacting the ability to play back the frames in real time. Granted, a 5K R3D in 32bpc frame is almost a worst-case scenario in terms of memory and performance, but it shows the limits of the machine.
You can compensate for the memory usage with the same techniques that you usually would: reducing the RAM preview resolution or frame rate in the Preview panel, or reducing the color depth. Sounds like you're already doing that.
When using Mercury Transmit for video preview, something similar happens: After Effects does a live transformation of the video frame for the Mercury Transmit device, which can be even more complex due to scaling and/or frame rate limitations. Add color management to that and you get a double-whammy.

  • What do you do when Ram preview lags but info box still states "fps 24: realtime"

What do you do when you are trying to RAM Preview and you can clearly tell the sync with audio is inconsistent with other times that you have RAM previewed the footage.  Basically sometimes in RAM Preview it lags and other times it doesn't, making it look like everything lines up but then next time you RAM Preview it won't line up.  the funny part is the "info" box still will say "fps: realtime"
I am currently using a 15" MacBook Pro running on OS X 10.7.5 (Lion)
--Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core i7
    --750 GB HardDrive
    --16GB RAM
--AMD Radeon HD 6770M 1024 MB Graphics
I'm also using After Effects CC so I am going to try and upgrade to Mountain Lion or newer tonight.

Upgrading an operating system in the middle of a project is not usually a
good idea. Alternatively, it might fix issues. Remember that you will need
to repair permissions after the upgrade. Apple OS upgrades (especially
Mavericks for some reason) caused a lot of issues with software like After
Effects after users upgraded to it. See this:

  • How to limit RAM preview to the work area?

    Sorry for mistakes, I'm German!
My RAM preview is not limited to my work area and I couldn't find any way to change this behavior. Is there a preference to check or any other solution?
I'm using (I don't know, which information is needed, so I'll list everything I have in mind):
    Windows 7 64bit,
    After Effects CS5 10.0.1.19,

  • Crashing when doing ram previews or exporting 7.0.1

    AE 7.0.1
Windows XP SP2, 3 gigs of ram, 2.21 Ghz AMD processor (acer aspire), All-In-Wonder 2006 PCI Express card, 256 megs video memory, ATI X1300 base
The last 2GB of ram is new, just installed. Nothing else is crashing like this, though.
NOT running Open GL (but the same thing happens when I DO run OpenGL.)
It crashes about 1/5 of the time when doing ram previews IMMEDIATELY on trying to do them, and it crashes about 1/5 of the way through my export. I mean, AE is pretty damned useless if I can't export. I could almost sorta kinda live without the ram previews, but not really even then.

I found the problem... Nero... See, I didn't even realize Nero launched when I launched my computer, and I thought I had deleted it, as it was just a trial and I never bought the full version... I uninstalled Nero and put after effects through its paces, no more problems.

  • After Effects will RAM Preview not in real time

Hi, we have 3 adobe After Effects CC up to date here, we are working on a 60fps project in HD 1080. Nothing crazy.
We have 20 Gigas of ram. Mac OS 10.8.5 octo core 2011. ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 Mo. SSD disque crucial m500 256 gigas.
We have a lot of problem with Ram Preview. (on every project)
Everything works fine until, we don't know why, the ram preview is getting not realtime, like 30fps or under.
Sometimes purge memory do the trick but not always.
We need to reboot and it works again, but few minutes.
We made a test on CS5 and it works well realtime, but same problem on CS6.
I tried to delete all the preferences to check but no difference.
We are working with nfs network account but i always redirect disk cache to local disk (set to 20 gigas) and also media conformed cache (database and cache)
We are getting mad, it's really hard to work that way, rebooting each time.
Maybe an issue with Global performance cache introduced in CS6 ?
It's not a footage/project issue because the entire project (a blend of tiff, png, prores422) can be played 120 frames/sec without any problem on after CS5, after CS6 (when it works), CC (when it works).
The problem is when working on project, changing layers, adding effects, After CC starts not be slow and not realtime using Ram Preview.
Also, when we are previewing, a lot of ram is not used, it only uses like 20% of the ram.
We hope for a nice patch very soon ....

60 fps is a very high frame rate not usually supported. If your footage is shot at 60i then it is probably 29.97 fps when converted to progressive video. If the footage is actually 60 fps then you will be better off, and by better off I mean more folks and streaming services will be able to view your video at the proper speed.
So my recommendation is to first determine your audience and then set up your comp appropriately. In all my years in the business I have only delivered one high frame rate project and that was 48 fps.
The other thing I would recommend is to optimize your system for AE. That does not necessarily mean throw all your available ram and processors at the app. There are some good recommendations here: Optimizing After Effects Performance

  • RAM previewing and rendering not working correctly

    Hi,
Today I was just about finished editing a video on CS6 and then when I'm about to add the last effect and render it it stuffs up on me:(. What happens is that while RAM previewing at some point during the loading of the preview it will stop loading, It will then proceed to play the ram preview on loop and when I press a button to stop it a small box pops up in the centre of my screen and the ram preview bar to show what has loaded (the one which shows green for parts that are loaded and blue for cached) turns black and sometimes other parts of after effects turn black. This has happened before and I fixed it by uninstalling and reinstalling After Effects about 6 times. I would do that this time though I would like to know the cause of it and any possible fixes as it is quite irritating. Another thing that may be happening is the RAM usage is slowly filling as I render. This has happened before on my laptop and I did not manage to fix it though it was not related to the first issue that time. The last time when it happened on my laptop the RAM usage eventually filled up to 100% and it would no longer render. I am not sure if it is happening this time as it is still currently rendering though I will update the thread if it does. Finally my render is going very slowly, I am not sure if this issue is realted to any of the above or if it is just the effects I am using though. My memory and multiprocessing settings are using 6 cores of 7 with 2 GB of ram allocated to each with multiprocessing on. My ram allocated for other programs is 6GB. To fix these Issues so far I have tried clearing the cache, purging the memory and image cache, restarting  my computer and reinstalling after effects. My specs are:
    i7 4770k non overclocked
    GTX 780
    G.Skill Ripjaws Z 2133mhz 32GB
    Samsung 840 pro
    Seagate Barracuda
    MSI Z87-G45
    H100i cooler
    Any reply is appreciated
    Thanks in advance
    Sam

How much experience do you have with AE? Ram preview can be lengthened by adjusting the resolution of the composition window, different parts of the project can be previewed using the work area, and preview length and render time are both a function of composition frame size. Complex, memory intensive effects like particle systems will reduce the render time and the length of a ram preview. Without knowing the details of your composition it's hard to say if you are running into a bug, running out of resources, or experiencing normal behavior.

  • Ram Preview not working correctly

On one machine here, when the artist goes to do a ram preview, they only get grey frames in the comp window. Either that or they get a freeze of the first frame in the render region, but no motion.
I have tried deleting prefs, zapping Pram, deleting the cache, purging memory. turning open GL on and off, all to no avail.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks in advance
    Sam DeWitt

I'm not sure if RAM issues really show up during normal work. In most cases the operating system will constantly rearrange the memory allocation, so it may never touch upon that one damaged memory block. You wouldn't even know it, if it caused a crash once a week, because it could be anything. I'll admit that it's a far shot, but nonetheless one should not rule out what seems to be impossible at first sight. the only other thing I can think of would be a tool that suppresses screen refresh, which could be some widget ort system extension...

  • After Effects CC on a Macbook. In RAM Preview the green progress line is not displaying. Preview works but no line to indicate progress. Is there a way to tunr the line back on?

We have two Macbook Pros running CC After Effects. Bothdo not show the green line while running RAM Preview. The Preview works but there's no way to watch its progress. Any thoughts?

It is an option in the timeline window. Upper Right Corner...
Sometimes it causes problems. Maybe that is why it is turned off.

  • How do i make the ram preview render the whole thing not just part of it

i have a super-fast modern desktop computer so ram isn't an issue. i want the green bar to cover the whole thing, not leave gray and blue spaces.
unrelated but while i'm here: is there a way to increase just the gamma of just the in-program composition window since i like to keep my monitor dark for my eyes but always have to increase brightness when watching movies as a result.
also is there a way to increase the text size of the ui besides increasing the text size for the whole windows 8.1?

How much RAM does your super-fast modern desktop have? AND what is the size of your composition?
If you're getting spaces between the green bar, your RAM Preview options may include skip frames.
If you don't have enough RAM to cache a large (or long) video, you can lower the resolution that you're attempting to RAM Preview (in your comp window if you're using Auto, or in the RAM Preview options).  Unfortunately, it means that you'll be trading quality of the video playback for duration of frames played.
You can adjust the exposure of the video in the comp or footage windows by using the Exposure Button
Turn up the value to over/under expose the video, but it won't change the RENDER, just the way you look at it in the window.
You can toggle the icon on/off if you have a certain value you like to keep it set to.

  • After Effects not Ram previewing properly

    Hello
I use after effects cc 2014 on my macbook pro version 10.9.5 2.6GHz intel core i7. Memory 16G 1600 MHz DDR3. Nvidia GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB.
Recently, almost every time I try and do a Ram preview using the button in the preview panel, my computer pauses and appears to not register then when I move the mouse it beach balls. If I wait and watch it it, it suddenly shows green but doesn't play back. If I hit the button again it does it all again. If I hit space bar to play it doesn't play the audio. It does scrub fine. If I go on to another program while it is previewing it lets me know when it has done but isn't playing and if I hit the button to get it to play it does it again!! It does occasionally work but more often than not it doesn't.
I have tried all the usual restarts and purging the cache.
The comp is a 25fps 1920x1080 and I am using 3D but the comps aren't huge.
    Any help would be great!
    Thanks
    Leah

well, one way to go would be to use an AEGP plug-in which would intercept
    the preview command.
i don't know if there is such a command and if it's guaranteed to
intercept, but you could use command_hook with the "all commands" option,
and see what you catch when you hit 0.
if so, then your effect could communicate with the AEGP to ask for the
    state.
if you give up on ram previews and care only for queue renders, then you
could check the queue state during the render call.
